Re-opening of Donabate Historical Society Museum Donabate Historical Society recently re-opened their museum which was originally opened in 1974. Speaking at the re-launch, the Chairman of the society Peadar Bates said, “ This is a momentous day for the Donabate Historical Society which, I believe, is the oldest historical society in Fingal. Established in 1948 it has continued un-interrupted since then except for a small no of years prior to 1972. In 1974 it was mooted at an historical society meeting that the society should endeavour to establish a museum. The suggestion was enthusiastically received by all present. I am the last man standing of that group.The search for a suitable premises began shortly afterwards. I won’t go into all the details and will move on to 1985. In that year the late Margaret Collins, an enthusiastic member of our society, donated to Fingal County Council, Stella’s Tower in Portrane, together with some surrounding land, in order to allow easy access to the building. Her hope was that the tower would be restored because of its Jonathan Swift connections. Unfortunately we were to be disappointed as the restoration did not take place. In the meantime our society continued to have exhibitions mainly in the parish hall. In 1997 the council agreed to make a room available to the Society in the courtyard of Newbridge House, in which to establish a museum. The official opening took place in 1998 with Council officials present. There were quite a number of rare and important

items donated.Of course there would have been no success without our dedicated committee and the small number of volunteers. We are a small society, but I think we have pulled above our weight as only recently we got word that our

museum has been nominated for an award in the “All Ireland Community and Council Awards competition”. Our Congratulations to the society on the re-opening of the museum and we wish them every success in the future.

Active Age for All- Cantóirí & AGM

Our Singing and Music group Cantóiríhad two very successful concerts recently. In November they took part in the Winter Miscellany in St Patrick’s Church of Ireland Church. It was a wonderful concert and the venue was magical. Then the Carol Concert in the Community Centre in December, with the children from

Bright Sparks preschool, was a big success and got everyone into the Christmas Spirit. The Carols and mince pies were enjoyed by all. The concert was in aid of St Francis Hospice and people were very generous with their donations. Thank you to everyone involved. The AGM of Active Age for All will take place

Swords Castle was the venue for the launch of the new Fingal County Council’s Arts Plan 2019-2025 which will set out the strategy for arts in the county for the next seven years. Mayor of Fingal, Councillor Eoghan O’Brien was joined by AnnMarie Farrelly, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Rory O’Byrne, County Arts Officer and special guest speaker Art O’Leary, Secretary-General to the President, in welcoming an audience of artists, cultural policymakers, educators, families and the general public. The content of the plan was informed by a process of public consultation that took place over six weeks from May to June 2018. The first stage of public consultation took the form of an online survey. The second stage of the consultation employed the ‘World Café’ methodology, whereby the Arts Office hosted two half-day workshops with invited stakeholders. Guests were invited to experience two special exhibitions programmed for the occasion, which align with the planning and vision for Swords as a site for contemporary art in the context of the proposed new Cultural Masterplan.

Artist Michele Hetherington presented Talk softly, new site-specific work at Swords Castle. Hetherington is a local Fingal artist and was the recipient of the Fingal Arts Graduate Award in 2018.Alan James Burns presented Silicon Synapse, a Virtual Reality and psycho-acoustic installation in the historic Carnegie Library, Swords. This artwork is jointly commissioned by Fingal County Council and the European Commission’s SciArt programme and is funded by Arts Council of Ireland Open Call Award. The arts plan also features the artwork of photographer Rich Gilligan. Originally a native of Fingal, Gilligan has been commissioned by Fingal Arts Office to document and capture the cultural landscape of the county. This process began in August 2019 and will continue through 2020.Rory O’Byrne concluded that, ‘The arts plan is a celebration of the people and places that define our great county, and we look forward to working with as many people as possible over the coming years to realise our purpose - to bring the arts to life in Fingal and Fingal to life through the Arts’.

Councillors meet with Irish Water Fingal County Councillors have met with representatives from Irish Water following the two recent Boiled Water Notices that affected water supply in the Greater Dublin region.Irish Water’s National Head of Asset Operations Michael O’Leary attended a meeting of the Organisation and Procedure Committee at County Hall in Swords.Mr O’Leary briefed councillors on the up-to-date position following the incidents that occurred at the Leixlip Water Treatment Plant in October and November. Since 2014 Fingal County Council has operated Leixlip Water Treatment Plant under a Service Level Agreement with Irish Water. Under the Agreement, Fingal County Council’s Water Services Department provides staffing on a 24-hour basis, Irish Water is responsible for all costs incurred. Any decisions regarding capital refurbishment and replacement at the Plant are made by Irish Water and paid for by Irish Water.Mayor of Fingal Cllr Eoghan O’Brien said: ‘I am pleased that Irish Water attended the meeting where councillors had the opportunity to hear directly from them about the recent Boil Water Notices. The two incidents had a significant impact on Fingal residents and it was important that councillors were able to outline their concerns and seek answers on behalf of their constituents.”

At the end of the last academic year the DCC Headstrong Committee received a donation in support of their work for student wellbeing in school. This followed a presentation in school to Ms. Celine Greene, Head of Client Services in WTW and parent in our school community. As a result of this presentation, Ms.Greene asked our students to come into the company to talk to some staff about the work they are doing to support student wellbeing. They told the assembled staff, which included company CEO Mr. Brian Curtis, about a number of initiatives they are involved in and the vital importance of this work to support student mental health. These included: talks they have organised for 3rd and 6th year students with Jigsaw in advance of their mock exams to support their mental wellbeing and dealing with stress. The Weaving Wellbeing pilot programme, designed by local woman and parent of two past pupils, Fiona Forman, which the committee arranged in consultation with teachers,

to be delivered for first years. The Headstrong committee are co funding this programme. A safe space for students in school. This space is to support students who are having a bad day, who may need some time out. The cake sale the students held to fund hoodies for the group (they decided to fundraise separately for this so they would not take funds away from donations to support school initiatives).The themed art work on stairwells in school - completed to date - the Pride stairwell and the Cycle Against Suicide stairwell. The students presented really well and they made a big impression on the assembled audience. who were 7-0 winners against Mount Temple at ere home this afternoon. This result should put them into the Leinster Quarter Final in January! The Senior Hockey team are also still in competition and their next game takes place in the new term! Unfortunately, Mr Clarke’s and Mr Claffey’s teams faced difficult away assignments today but both teams performed admirably despite the rough weather conditions. Mr Clarke’s Senior soccer team lost by five goals to three against Boyne Community School in Trim, Co. Meath. DCC trailed two-nil but got back on equal terms

by half time. With the wind behind them, they had the better second half and were unlucky with the final score. Mr Claffey’s Senior GAA team travelled to Tallaght to take on Old Bawn Community School and they were defeated by four points in a closely fought contest. Kieran Conroy and Karl Murray turned in ‘Man of the Match’ performances for DCC but the home side did enough to ensure their win.Ms Orohoe, Mr Clarke and Mr Claffey are all extremely proud of the efforts of their respective teams and we thank them for looking after our students so well. DonabateCommunity College News Donabate CC - U16s East Plate Winners

Report by TY Journalism students Sarah Keon and Ciara Grace. Donabate CC 31 Blackrock College 24 Donabate CC were crowned U16s East Plate winners against Blackrock College in Oblate Hall, Inchicore recently. It is the school’s first basketball title for a number of years. With determination and skill they saw off the defiant challenge of Blackrock College with joint captains Adam O’Sullivan and Luke Mitchell leading the way with twenty-six points between them. The boys put in an enthusiastic performance and stayed focused throughout with their teammates, teachers and other pupils continuously cheering them on. Donabate battled for the remainder of the game and were awarded several free throws scoring two, but the opposition fought back and gained a valuable two points. With

four seconds remaining our boys battled it out and two last gasp free throws were awarded. Luke stepped up to take the shots and with one of them being scored it meant that our boys were in the clear. Final score gave Donabate a six-point win; 31 points to 24. A huge congratulations to the team and Ms.Gallagher on a very well deserved victory! A big thank you to all parents, teachers and pupils who travelled to Oblate Hall to support the boys. We wish the best of luck next season to both the Junior and Senior team! Donabate Parkrun December 7th Well done to all 138 participants who took part in the Parkrun on December 7. There were 5 first timers and 21 of you achieved personal bests. It was great to see a big group from St Pats GAA under 14’s taking part. Congratulations to Des McNally who completed his milestone 100th parkrun. Des volunteers on a regular basis and still found time to help with pre-setup as well as token sorting. Thanks to Des and all the other volunteers yesterday. Well done to all concerned in running such successful Parkruns in the area in 2019 and we are looking forward to your conitinued success in 2020.

New Year Super Fish Supper Following the festive period, some of us may not want to see turkey or ham on the menu for quite a while! With the new year comes new years resolutions and a lot of people make goals to enhance their health. Fish is full of lots of nutritional goodness. Yet, despite being an island, our intakes of fish in Ireland are quite low. Some people say it’s the smell that fish may leave in the kitchen that turns them off or that they’re just not sure how to make it tasty. But the great news is that fish is quite easy and quick to cook. And a top tip to get rid of any unwanted odours is to place 1/2 lemon in water in a cup (cut side up) and heat in the oven/microwave for 4-6minutes. Burning a nice scented candle also helps! Ingredients: Serves 2 • • • • • 12

2 Salmon fillets 200g Tenderstem broccoli 250g Asparagus 2 teaspoons black pepper 1 tablespoon rapeseed oil

2 cloves garlic 1 tablespoon minced parsley leaves Juice of 1/2 of a lemon Sweet potato chips:

260g sweet potatoes 1 tablespoon rapeseed oil 1 teaspoon chilli powder 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon black pepper Method:

1. Preheat oven to 200’c. 2.The sweet potato chips take longer to cook, so do these first. Wash, peel and slice the sweet potato into chips. 3. Place the remaining ingredients for the sweet potato chips in a large bowl and stir well to combine. Then add the sliced sweet potatoes and coat in this mixture. 4. Place the sweet potato onto a baking tray and bake in the oven for 40-45minutes at 180’c. Turn them halfway through baking to

ensure they cook evenly. 5. Place the salmon onto a baking tray that is pre-greased or lined with parchment paper. 6. Mix the lemon juice, parsley leaves, oil and garlic together and brush the top and sides of the salmon with this mixture. Bake in the oven at 180’c for 12-15minutes (depending on the thickness of the salmon). When cooked through, the salmon will look opaque and flake easily with a fork. 7.Brush the remainder of the mixture from step 6 onto the broccoli and asparagus on a foil lined baking tray and sprinkle with black pepper. Bake in the oven at 180’c for 10-15minutes or until tender. 8.Serve up with a lemon wedge. Donabate Golf Club and Donabate Portrane Tennis Club jointly held an Open Invitation Day on Saturday October 5 th for prospective new members who might be interested in joining either or both clubs. The Golf Club -was formed in 1925 and now has a beautiful manicured 27 hole championship layout (recently hosted the Irish Boys U 16 Championship event August 21st), together with a modern 2 storey clubhouse with full catering and bar facilities. completed a magnificant upgrade to their 2 practise areas to USGA standards.Before the official opening the club invited golfers to sample a 9 hole round of golf from 1pm. Short game areas were also open for the public to test their skills The Tennis Club- The Tennis club was formed in 2016 and are located on the grounds of the golf club and can now boast of 6 new all weather floodlit courts.Activities on the tennis courts began at 2pm with an exhibition class 1 standard mixed doubles match at 3pm.As part of the Open

Day there was a ceremonial opening of two new Tennis courts and new Golf Practice facilities at 4pm followed by a tea/coffee/prosecco reception in the club Pavilion. Both clubs have great membership offers and these can be viewed on each clubs website, and a wram welcome is extended to anyone interested in being part of this unique twinned sporting facility. Many clubs are introverted in their outlook but neither Donabate Golf Club nor Donabate Portrane Tennis Club are so singly focussed and their co-operation is a credit to both clubs.
