Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed – Exercising and Cooking November has been a busy month for Donabate/Portrane Men’s Shed. To get them up on their feet and moving, they started their Strengthening for Older Men Class - an exercise class to improve core strength and stability led by Physio Louise Farrell. This takes place on Mondays. It was enjoyed by all and was not too gruelling! It was sponsored by Fingal Age Friendly. Then a more relaxing course ‘Healthy Eating’ took place where we learned to make soup and scones from scratch and a nice beef stew - no packets or jars allowed only fresh ingredients! Afterwards we enjoyed eating our own dishes.This Healthy Eating Course was sponsored by the HSE. Date for your diary -Our Christmas lunch will take place on the 6th of December in Keelings. Make Your Minutes Count with ALONE this Christmas

In Dublin on 15th November 2019 ALONE, the organisation that supports older people to age at home, launched their Christmas campaign, which encourages members of the public to make their minutes count by working together to tackle loneliness and isolation. Author Marian Keyes launched the organisation’s Christmas campaign, to encourage members of the public to take a few minutes out of their day to interact with their older neighbours and relatives who may be experiencing feelings of loneliness as the festive season approaches. “Older people have the most amazing stories to tell”, she said. ALONE is also asking for support from new volunteers and donors to help to support them to combat loneliness and other challenges faced by older people. One in ten people over 75 are lonely a lot of the time and demand for ALONE’s services has increased five-fold in recent years. One in 4 older people live alone, and this increases in rural areas. Marian commented, “I’m delighted to be helping ALONE launch their Christmas campaign this year, to spread awareness of such an important issue. I admire the work that they do with older people and I’m so happy to 6

be a part of such a positive message. Loneliness and isolation can be serious problems for older people and dropping in for a chat or helping a neighbour with their shopping could make all the difference to their mental health. We’ve all felt alone at certain times in our lives, sometimes all it takes is a cup of tea and a bit of a laugh to really lift an older person’s spirits. A few minutes may not mean much to you, but to a lonely older person it could be the highlight of their day.” She continued, “As we age, it can be more difficult to reach out to people for companionship; a lot of older people might be embarrassed or too proud to admit that they are lonely. What might only seem like a quick chat to you can make an older person feel loved, appreciated, and that they are part of the community. DonabateCommunity College News Donabate Community College Students Excelling Once More Congratulations Eleanor - Huge congratulations to DCC alumni student, Eleanor Ronan who collected her Symphony Orchestra Scholarship from UCD on Thursday evening.This is an incredible achievement for an extremely hardworking student and we hope Eleanor is enjoying her first year in UCD where she is studying English, Music and Spanish. Mr Creevey congratulated Eleanor on her achievement on behalf of the school and collected a plaque which will be proudly displayed in DCC!Celebrations were put on hold however as Eleanor had to dash to perform Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony in the Ad Astra Concert Hall across campus! We hope the performance went well and wish Eleanor continued success!

DCC TY Students learn about Climate Change

Transition Year students tackle climate change! - Right now, the issue of climate change is the most important scientific issue facing humanity at the moment. As part of Science Week 2019, our Agricultural Science classes learnt that Science Foundation Ireland were planning to host many events around the country including planting trees. This initiative gave us the opportunity to speak with our teacher about the science behind climate change, about what actions we can take as a class, the impact they might have and the benefit we might expect in relation to capturing carbon emissions.As trees grow, they absorb and store the carbon dioxide emissions that are increasing global warming. Planting a tree is a slow process that we will monitor over the next three years in Donabate Community College but it is one of the most effective ways of capturing carbon that we can implement in school, our community and country.Trees suck up carbon from the atmosphere and lock it away in their wood, a process known as carbon sequestration. In a managed forest, trees are harvested and used for construction, providing a greener alternative to materials such as concrete. Irish forests absorb four million tonnes of carbon a year, or 70% of all emissions from Irish cars. We learnt that if you left a forest unmanaged, trees would naturally start to die, which would emit the carbon again, which is why the real success of managed forestry is that for every tree that is felled, three would be planted in its place, which maximises the amount of carbon a forest can absorb and lock away.Today in class, we planted oak 8

DCC Students attend Headstrong Summit - Recently, Transition Year students Carla Crosbie and Oisin McGillicuddy, two members of the school’s Headstrong Committee accompanied by Mr.O’Briain, visited Dublin Castle to attend a Headstrong Summit.At the summit, we got the opportunity to listen to different speakers share their stories and experiences about mental health. We would like to congratulate 6th Year student Jake O’Toole for being a Cycle Against Suicide Ambassador. There are only twelve ambassadors in the country and we are incredibly lucky to have Jake in our school. Jake was involved in the organising of the Headstrong Summit. Carla and Oisín spoke to Jake after the Summit to get his insight on being a Cycle Against Suicide Ambassador: Q. How did you come about being an ambassador for Cycle Against Suicide?A.“When I was in TY I was asked to be part of the Cycle Against Suicide squad for the school. Ms. Lowry was approached by Cycle Against Suicide and asked if anyone would be interested in applying for the Ambassador role. Ms Lowry asked me would I be interested and I gladly took the opportunity.” Q. How long have you been an Ambassador for Cycle Against Suicide? A. “I took up the position in May 2018”. Q. What are your roles and responsibilities as an Ambassador? A.”We create a programme for schools to promote positive mental health in their school. We also ran the Headstrong Summit in Dublin Castle a few weeks ago.” Q.What are your achievements so far as an Ambassador? A.“We successfully developed the programme for schools to follow to encourage positive student mental health. TY students Carla and Oisin receive an accolade from Cycle Against Suicide

6th Year student Jake O’Toole has become one of 12 Cycle Against Suicide Ambassadors

Congratulations Elizabeth! It has been a busy year thus far for 6th year student Elizabeth Akinwande. She started the year with a performance of one of her pieces ‘For the Sake of Melanin’ at a conference in DCU and a writing workshop for children. This led to a radio interview and a request from Fighting Words to write a piece for ‘The Irish Times’ as part of an initiative to provide a sustained focus on child welfare and children’s issues. Elizabeth wrote a powerful article which was published in May of this year. Since then interest in her work has been sustained. She has now joined the Fighting Words, Abbey Playwrights Project which will continue throughout the winter and lead to the performance of the script she creates next year. In addition to all of the above Elizabeth’s work is to be included in an anthology of writing, ‘ What You Need to Know About Me’ (published by The Hawkins Project, co-founded by Dave Eggers) that highlights the experiences of young people who have immigrated from one country to another. In the words of The Hawkins Project; “This anthology endeavours to create a platform for some of the most important stories of our time. As such, it would be our honour to amplify these voices, and all of the hopes, fears, and dreams tied to our contributors’ unique stories.” This project is based in the United States, so it is an incredible achievement for Elizabeth. And just last week, Elizabeth was informed that she has been awarded a prize for one of her pieces in the Ken Saro-Wiwa School Poetry competition, organised by Maynooth University. Presentation of her award will take place soon in Maynooth University Library.

€1,050 awarded under the Youth Sports Grants Scheme to local clubs Fingal County Council has awarded over €95,000 to 91 sports clubs throughout Fingal under the Youth Sports Grants Scheme. At this week’s full Council meeting, Councillors approved the funding which will see €1,050 allocated to each of the successful organisations.The purpose of the Youth Sports Grants is to assist existing sports clubs towards the purchase of equipment, refereeing/coaching fees, with the main aim of increasing participation levels in their local communities. The Fingal Sports Office, part of the network of Sports Ireland Local Sports Partnerships, invited sports clubs to apply for a small grant under this scheme. Successful applicants had to meet a number of criteria

History made in pats - on the double!

St Pats Minor Champions

It was a busy month in Pats with so many teams in Quarter-Final, Semi-Final & Championship Final as well as league matches. However two of their matches were actually history-making events in their own right.Their Minor Ladies squad won the Championship Final 2-08 to 2-03 in a thrilling encounter in Ballymastone in bitterly cold conditions. This is the first title at Minor level for the club. It’s wonderful that it’s happened in this the year of the nationwide #20x20 campaign with it’s ‘Effort Is Equal’ slogan. Pats mentors, parents & its Executive Committee

have approached this campaign wholeheartedly with the appointment of 2 external adult LGFA managers Aidan Coppinger & Adrian Brophy along with Pats own Niall Collins. LGFA is now the fastest growing section of their club with increasing numbers of female players, supporters & referees. Following on from this policy, they were delighted to have another history making event on 10 November when the Club fielded their first Camogie team in the county league. Congrats to

their U8 girls squad who played Naomh Barróg at Ballymastone with both squads showing great determination and dedication. The Club’s Chairperson Rory O’Neill was quoted “Fantastic to see Camogie being firmly embedded in St Pats of Donabate, it has been part of a strategy the club is following to see Gaelic Games available at every level for boys and girls in Donabate/ Portrane. The Fingal Community Facilities Network has compiled an information booklet that provides information on the range of services, facilities and activities available across all of the 31 community facilities supported by Fingal County Council’s Community Development Office. As part of Inclusion week the Fingal Community Facilities Network Information Booklet “Connecting Communities” was launched by the Mayor of Fingal at Donabate Portrane Community Centre, Donabate on November 13th 2019 @11am. The information booklet, was compiled by the Fingal Community Facilities Network and provides a snap shot of what each community centre offers, opening hours, activities, volunteering opportunities and what happens on a daily basis in any of the 31 Fingal County Council supported community facilities across Fingal, from Dublin 15 to Balbriggan and along the coast from Howth to Rush. In an effort to ensure no one is excluded the information booklet will also be available in Irish, Polish and French

languages and will be available on community centre and Fingal County Council web sites. The Fingal Community Facilities Network was set up in 2017 by the Community Facilities Support Unit of the Community Development Office and provides a networking support structure for managers, staff and volunteers of community facilities across the county of Fingal. There are currently 60 members registered with the Network. Members include: facility managers,supervisors and key staff, volunteer management committee officers,volunteers who work in community centres.Members can share work experiences and exchange best practices in managing community centres with colleagues. The network promotes the sharing of skills across the 31 community centres and provides expertise in facility management, finance, business planning and offer supports such as training and development in areas like data protection or new changes in legislation.For further information please contact the community development office at 01 8905080
