Active Age for All – Classes now underway

Well, our term is in full swing and we are delighted to say that most of our paid classes are now full. Sit and Get Fit is so popular that queues form at the door! Our new course, Stronger for Longer, which builds core strength and stability, is already showing results for many participants. They are reporting feeling more stable and fit after just a few weeks. Of course, practice is encouraged between classes.A most interesting course on memoir or memory writing called Silver Threads, which we are running, has generated a great deal of interest. So much so

that during Fingal Inclusion week, which runs from the 11th to the 17th of November, there will be a FREE workshop. It takes place on the 13th of November, our Inclusion Day. It will be from 11.30 am to1.00 pm. If you want some exercise before the workshop there are two Free short classes starting at 10.30 am. -10.30 Tai Chi,- 11.00 Stronger for Longer-11.30 am Silver Threads.Those inclusion day classes are open to all - not just Active Age for All members.The Silver Threads and Stronger for Longer courses were made possible

through Cultural Activities and Fingal Age Friendly grants from Fingal Community Sports and Cultural Division. Comhaltas Leithinis Donabate Portrane, our 1st Traditional Music Classes took place on Monday 30th September in DPETNS. It was an historic day on our peninsula to get the Comhaltas up and running. We have over 40 people enrolled in classes in, Tin Whistle, Fiddle, Bodhran & Banjo at beginners & improvers

level, with nearly a 50/50 split between adults & children. We have a great committee & excellent teachers and we hope to go from strength to strength. We will be holding some Slow Sessions for Members and their families during the year. We encourage members to volunteer for some

Hope For Those With Dyslexia – A Mothers Tale This year we discovered – finally - that our 12 year old daughter has Dyslexia. We first noticed it at age 5 or 6, when homework began. From the start, it was a struggle. If not for her teacher last year, her Dyslexia may have gone uncategorized longer. Luckily for us, he has a brother who is Dyslexic. Miunteoir Adrian recognised the symptoms and pushed for her to have the assessment and we got a definitive diagnosis. Sad as it is, we know that we’re lucky families that we actually got a diagnosis. Schools have as little as 7 children assessed each year which means many children with Dyslexia are not being assessed. There is an option to have a private assessment for your child, at a cost of approximately €400 but we did not find out about this until after we had our daughter assessed at school. Despite the Department of Education’s assessment that our daughter is Dyslexic, they have not given us any support since. They recommended we get her a laptop and scanning pen but offered no financial support or advice on where to get them. Thankfully, The Dyslexia Association of Ireland were helpful and gave us lots of information and support. We found Brian at Compupacit.ie - who sell the scanning pens - full of great advice. Our daughter scrolls the pen across any words in a book she does not understand, and it reads the word aloud to her. It also has a dictionary to explain the meaning of the word, if she needs it. This pen is giving her confidence to read without 6

asking for help. Our daughter is a kind, clever, intelligent child and having her boxed in to a ‘category’ is frustrating because, as her parents, we know that her Dyslexia does not define her. Yes, she has it and yes, she struggles with it, but she is smart and creative in so many other ways. DCC Politics Society visits Leinster House

On Friday the 26th of September, the DCC Politics Society held their first trip, to Leinster House.First up on the schedule was a tour of Leinster House, with the hilarious Leo, one of the ushers in the Houses of the Oireachtas. We saw the Dáil Chamber, the lobby with portraits of former Taoisigh and the Seanad Chamber. We learned about the way voting works and what an average day is like in the Oireachtas. Then it was on to the Front Hall, where we learned about the proclamation from the Easter Rising and had the opportunity to take photos with portraits of our revolutionary leaders and current Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D Higgins. Afterwards, it was off to the Dáil canteen for a meet and greet with Social Democrats Co-Leader and TD for Dublin North-West Róisín Shorthall

and local County Councillor Paul Mulville. We had a great discussion with Róisín and Paul, following an extended format of our normal Friday lunchtime discussions/debates, covering topics from Climate Change, Universal Basic Income to a Four Day Workweek. It was interesting hearing everyone’s opinion, with our members ideologies ranging from communists, libertarian socialists and social democrats on the left, to the authoritarian right wing. We were full of questions and views to share and debate.We would like to thank Deputy Shorthall and Cllr Mulville for the opportunity to visit Leinster House and their generosity with their time spent chatting to us.The Politics Society meets every Friday at 10:30 (Lunchtime) in Mr Creevey’s office and is open to all 4th, 5th and 6th Year Students interested.

Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed-Up and Running Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed is now up and running at their new home at the Scout Den, Portrane Road.They have spent the summer refurbishing their Shed and are now ready to focus on their Activities Programme. First off is our exercise programme called Fingal Strengthening for Older Men, which aims to improve core strength and stability.This is a pilot programme sponsored by Age Friendly Department in Fingal Co Council.This will start on the 4th of November at 10.30 am in the Scout Den.We are also running our Healthy Cooking Programme again this year as it was so enjoyable and informative. This programme is supported by the HSE. The course will take place in the Scout Den from Thursday November 7th at 10.00 am. All men are eligible to join Men’s Shed and participate in our Programmes.The AGM of the Men’s Shed will take place in Donabate Portrane Community Centre on the 21st of November at 8.00 pm. Financial Assistance Scheme for 2020 Events and Festivals Fingal County Council’s Events Unit has launched its call for applications for groups and organisations seeking financial assistance for Festivals and Events taking place in 2020. Applications will be accepted for existing and/ or new events or festivals which animate public spaces in creative and innovative ways and which are focused on developing measurable tourism impacts in the County. Interested parties must meet a number of other eligibility criteria including:Have a general audience appeal and be socially inclusive. Clearly demonstrate potential to generate economic, social and/ or cultural benefits.Complement the County’s calendar of events in relation to attracting overseas’ visitors.Meet the Events Unit’s objective of compiling a varied programme of events throughout the year including content, seasonal and geographical spread.Demonstrate financial sustainability and the capacity to develop the event.Have a clear PR and marketing plan including a social media strategy to actively promote the event.Fingal 8

County Council’s Events Unit supports tourism through the Fingal Statement of Tourism Strategy 2017 - 2022 and businesses in our towns through a wide-ranging programme of events. Since the formation of the Events Unit in 2010, the number of events being held and supported

annually has increased year on year. The programme is a combination of Fingal County Council’s own events, events in partnership with other bodies that have similar objectives, and events run by external organisers who receive direct funding contributions from Fingal

County Council through a financial assistance programme.The closing date for applications for funding is on Tuesday 17th December 2019 at 3pm for events taking place in 2020. For more information and an application form, please email events@fingal.ie.

What is Cats Spraying? By Brendan Daly

Anytime your cat backs himself up to a door or other object in your house, lifts his tail, and releases urine, you have a problem. This problem is known as spraying, and is very common with cats kept indoors. Even though it is a very annoying problem, it’s a problem that can be solved. Contrary to what many think, spraying isn’t a litter box problem, but rather a problem with marking. Cat urine that is sprayed contains pheromones, which is a substance that cats and other animals use for communicating. Pheromones are

much like fingerprints with humans, as they are used to identify the cat to other animals.When a cat sprays something, he is simply marking his territory through his urine. If you raise your voice or show angry towards your cat, it can very well result in more spraying. Cats that are in heat are easily attracted to the odour of urine. For female cats in heat, a male cat will spray to get her attention. Keep in mind that cats not only spray during heat, as some will also spray during encounters with other cats, or when they are feeling stressed.

Although spraying is a way of communicating for cats, the smell for people is horrible. The good thing here is that most cats will do a majority of their spraying outdoors. If you have an indoor cat that never goes outside, spraying can indeed be a problem. If you’ve noticed spraying in your home, you should take action and do something about it immediately. The most effective and also the easiest way to stop spraying is to have your cat either neutered or spayed, which of course depends on the sex. Sometimes cats will spray

when they are stressed, or indeed there may be a medical problem present that is causing the problem, which your vet can identify.You should always do something about spraying the moment it starts. No Changes in Budget 2020 to unfair taxation of Cohabiting couples By Dave Kavanagh Of all the topics I cover, the taxation of cohabiting couples in certain circumstances, is defi-nitely the one that both baffles and angers most people. With over 152,000 cohabiting cou-ples in Ireland, this is hardly surprising. What IS surprising, is that whenever we advise on financial planning with couples such as this, they are mostly unaware of the events that could potentially leave them with a substantial tax bill! While the budget slightly increased the tax-free threshold for children, the other two bands and the rate of tax are unchanged. The main two areas that impact the most, are owning a property together, and having insurance policies that cover both. Supposing “John” & “Mary” buy a house together, with a mortgage in place. In the event of John’s death, the mortgage protection plan will usually clear the outstanding mortgage. With the house held in “joint tenancy” (as it usually would be with a mortgage) John’s half-ownership of the house passes to Mary. However, under Capital Acquisition Tax (CAT) rules, which covers gift and inheritance tax, Mary is classed as a stranger and therefore, only has a tax-free threshold of €16,250. If the house is valued at the time of John’s death at €300,000, then Mary is deemed to have inherited €150,000. After her threshold of €16,250, she is liable

to pay tax at 33% on the balance,leaving her with a tax bill of €44,137.50 If Mary satisfies 3 conditions, then she can be exempt from the tax. The conditions are:1. She must have lived with John in the property for at least 3 years prior to his death.2. She must continue to live in the property for a further 6 years. 3. She must have no other interest in any other residential property (including abroad). In the other area mentioned, supposing John & Mary have a life policy that insures both of them for €250,000 in the event of death. What is important here is how the premiums are paid. If they are paid jointly, perhaps from a joint bank account, in the event of John’s death, the policy will pay Mary the sum assured of €250,000. But Revenue will deem Mary to have only paid for half of the death benefit and therefore will have inherited €125,000. Based on the same calculation as with the property, Mary will have to pay €35,887.50 of it in tax. Worse again, if John paid for the premium from his own account, Mary will be deemed to have inherited the full amount, leaving her to pay €77,137.50 in tax. There are ways to prevent such tax liabilities, depending on your circumstances. Donabate Portrane Tennis Club and Donabate Golf Club held a joint Open Day on Saturday 5th October. The new and improved facilities were opened by Mayor of Fingal, Eoghan O’Brien. The weather was inclement but it did not prevent the play going ahead on the tennis courts.Guests were treated to a glass of prosecco and a thrilling match of mixed doubles tennis. Dan O’Neil and Lisa Ryan played against Liz Ryan and Laurent LaForgue. Dan O’Neil has just graduated from Trinity College and is Captain of the Malahide Class 1 team. He is in the Guinness Book of

Records as one of four players who broke the world record for the longest game of tennis after playing for more than 60 hours at the event staged in Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club in July 2018.Lisa Ryan is on the National U.16 Squad and won a number of Open Junior Tournaments last Summer including Malahide and Sutton. Liz Ford is from South Africa and is now living in Ireland as her husband is the Irish National Cricket Team coach. Liz played for 2 years on the professional ATP circuit and won the Irish Open Doubles event twice in 1981 and 1982.

Laurent LaForgue hails from France but has lived in Ireland for the last ten years. He is currently the DPTC Men’s Captain and in September he won both the club singles and men’s doubles championship titles. The ribbons for both facilities were cut and the speeches took place in the wonderful modern clubhouse of Donabate Golf Club where guests were treated to more prosecco and canapés. Both clubs have very competitive special offer membership rates available currently.

Niamh’s Nourishing Pudding As the temperature drops, we add the winter layers of clothing including scarves, hats, gloves and other woollies! We may also find ourselves opting more for comforting, warming foods to heat us up from the inside out! Rice, semolina or tapioca pudding is a classic consoling dessert or treat. This recipe is quite simple using milk, a grain of your choice such as quinoa/rice/tapioca/semolina and is flavoured with spices and dates. I used quinoa in the recipe below just because there was some in kitchen cupboard that I wanted to use up!

Ingredients: • • • • • • •

2 cups milk 2 cups boiling water 1 cup quinoa or rice/tapioca/ semolina 15 dates (soaked overnight or heated for a few minutes in water) 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon vanilla essence Method:

1. Rinse and drain quinoa. Place in a saucepan with boiling water and let it come

to the boil.Then reduce the heat, cover and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. 2. Add in the spices, dates and vanilla. 3. Gradually add the milk. Cook and stir over a medium heat until the mixture becomes thick, creamy and luscious looking!!! Sprinkle some cinnamon on top and Voilà! Donabate parkrun celebrated it’s 4th anniversary on Saturday 12th October. It was a fabulous morning with 233 runners, joggers and walkers completing the 5k course at event number 203. There were balloons, plenty of cake and lots of smiling faces. Since it’s inaugural event in 2015 over 4,203 individuals have completed 29,914 parkruns and 572 have volunteered on 4,039 occasions.
