Donabate Community Council supports planning moratorium A community council says it has been heartened by support for a moratorium on new planning permissions being granted in its congested area.Donabate Portrane Community Council said it welcomed the endorsement of its plan by Labour TD Brendan Ryan, Social Democrats Councillor Paul Mulville and Fine Gael’s Bob Dowling, speaking on behalf of TD Alan Farrell and Senator James Reilly, at a meeting of North Dublin elected representatives called by the community council. The community council wants Fingal County Council to call a halt to all new construction work on the peninsula from the start of 2019. It said traffic delays and a chronic infrastructure deficit in the area meant this was the only reasonable course of action.The community council wants a moratorium on new multi-unit developments on the narrow peninsula. It said it was now proving highly problematic for traffic to exit and enter the peninsula at rush hours.Already there is planning permission for around 900 housing units, with some 500 yet to begin construction.The CC say narrow roads are also under strain from high volumes of construction traffic in relation to the building of the new €160m National Forensic Mental Hospital in Portrane. Donabate Portrane Community Council wants a moratorium on new construction projects until the road widening works at the railway bridge have been completed, and the Donabate Distributor Road is finished.It also wants to see progress made on promised cycling and pedestrian links. A motion has been submitted to Fingal County Council seeking the implementation of the moratorium.Donabate Portrane Community Council has now called on Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin and Independent TDs and councillors to back its called for a temporary halt to new multi-unit construction projects.The call comes after it was revealed that a desperatelyneeded widening of the road leading into Donabate is to be delayed.The widening of the narrow road at the railway bridge at Prospect Hill, on the Hearse Road, was a condition attached to the grant of planning permission for the building of the National Forensic Mental Hospital.Fingal County Council is due to receive funding for the works from the HSE.

A spokesperson for Donabate Portrane Community Council said,” Fingal County Council has in the past used infrastructure deficit issues to half construction on the peninsula. Before a new sewage plant was constructed in Portrane a few years ago most planning applications were turned down,” the spokesperson said.

How To Make Your Finances Less Stressful

Considering that everything you eat, everything you wear, where you live, what you drive, where you travel to, and so many more aspects of your life are all related to your finances, most people don’t take the time to plan them effectively. A couple of reasons for this: If you have a problem that needs a plumber, an electrician or a roofer, you will know about it. If you haven’t reviewed your overall finances for a while, you may not even be aware that you have a problem. The other reason is that some of the main aspects of financial planning are viewed as “negative”. I mean who wants to spend time considering potential occurrences like the impact of a fatality, a serious illness or being unable to work due to injury or illness? Or give thought to having sufficient income in your retirement when you haven’t reached 30 yet? This perception of “negative” is often why people subconsciously avoid the topic, often citing “not having enough time” as a reason. (One person that recently told me they don’t have time to look at these

things, in the same conversation mentioned how they queued for over an hour at a drive-through for doughnuts!) The same reason explains why people spend regularly on things like the lotto, believing they can win the jackpot, at odds of 10.7million to 1. The same people’s odds of being diagnosed with one of the specified illnesses covered, is 1 in 4 (before age 65!) yet they say “that’ll never happen to me”. One hour is 4% of your day. Spending that much time even once per year can be hugely beneficial. You get the peace of mind that you are up to date with your planning. You get the reassurance that anything you have in place is the most appropriate for your current circumstances (or if not, the opportunity to make it so). You also get the satisfaction that you are not overpaying for something and are getting the best value. Suddenly, the mystery and uncertainty are removed, along with the stress and anxiety often associated with them. In all my years of doing reviews, I’ve never heard anyone regret taking time to go through their finances, but I’ve heard plenty

Garda resources must be prioritised- Dowling Local Election Candidate for Donabate and Portrane Bob Dowling (FG) has stressed the need for additional Garda resources to be provided in the Donabate and Portrane area. In response to an increase in local crime, he is calling for the necessary resources to be provided to the area. He said “Unfortunately, we have seen a rise in the amount of crimes taking place in Donabate and Portrane and this has been getting progressively worse. I have previously written to the Minister and I will be doing so again in order to raise issues around the lack of Garda resources in the area”. An increase in burglaries in the local area has been a significant issue, including a ram raid at the local garage according to Mr Dowling and he urged the need for additional resources such as a specific patrol car for the area, especially at weekends and weekend night times. “There is a serious lack of Garda presence in the area, especially at weekends. This vulnerability has resulted in gangs of youths arriving usually by train, locals having to calling the Gardaí, who have to escort them out of the town and back onto the trains. Residents feel intimidated and some have been assaulted, a strong Garda presence would be a deterrent” he stated. Donabate is served by the Swords station and while the Gardaí have always been very supportive, the resources to mount a strong presence is not available considering the requirement of policing Swords and it surrounding areas. Dowling will be suggesting that The Department of Justice seriously consider a station for Donabate as Lusk is partially operational and Rush Garda station is about to be reopened. This will be another piece of infrastructural advance planning needed for a community earmarked for major population growth. “I am anxious to ensure the building of all necessary supports, including educational, recreational and security to provide for a growing community in advance of the large scale house building planned for the area” he concluded.

Irish Traditional Music Group in Donabate Portrane Peninsula Did you go to The Fleadh (Fleadh Ceol na hÉireann) in Drogheda last summer? Are you interested in Irish traditional music and culture? Would you like to be part of the setting up of a branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (CCÉ) on our peninsula? If so, read on. Mary Whelan, Chairperson of the Dublin County Board Committee of CCÉ, will speak on the night about the process of setting up a branch and the support given by CCÉ e.g. in sourcing teachers and how to run a branch successfully with regard to committees and funding etc. Also Elizabeth Byrne, who was one of the founder members of CCÉ Port Mearnóg five years ago and has now, with them in her golden years, learned to play an instrument, will share her experience in setting up a branch. Fingal invites participants in St Patrick’s Day parades Fingal County Council’s Events Department are inviting applications for community groups or business to participate in this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parades taking place in Blanchardstown, Balbriggan, and Swords.Those interested can apply by downloading an application form from www.fingalparades.com and submitting the completed form to fingal@davisevents.ie. The closing date for applications is Friday, 15 February. Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Anthony Lavin said: “Saint Patrick’s Day is a significant cultural event and the parades allow Fingal residents to celebrate in their communities. The St Patrick’s Day Parades are an opportunity for residents to learn about local community groups and the businesses in their area. I look forward to seeing the diverse and creative floats at the Fingal parades this year.” Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid said: “Over 55,000 people attended the Fingal Saint Patrick’s Day parades last year and I look forward to seeing the turn out for this year. The Fingal Events team works to organise parades that are an entertaining and inclusive cultural celebration.” Davis Events have been again engaged by Fingal County Council to deliver the 2019 parades. Davis Events are liaising with theatre groups to arrange workshops for a number of participants who will be taking part in the parades. Fingal County Council is partnering with St. Patrick’s Festival in Swords and this will include the addition of a pageant float “Banba”, representing the Celtic Goddess of Ireland. St. Patrick’s Festival will work with community groups in Fingal to develop stories around Irish Tradition, diversity and Irish mythology. The Swords parade begins at 11am, the Balbriggan parade begins at 2 pm and the Blanchardstown parade begins at 3 pm. There are also parades taking place in Rush, Lusk and Skerries which are organised by community groups. The Rush parade begins at 1 pm and the Lusk parade takes place at 1.30. In Skerries, the parade begins at 3 pm.

Valentine’s Day Romantic Rawlos

(Makes 12 ‘Rawlos’) • 60g Dates in 1-2 tablespoons water • 140g Almond butter (or a nut/seed butter of your choice!) • 50g Dark chocolate (AT least 70% cocoa)

Method 1. Having soaked the dates in a small amount of water overnight, mash them up. If they don’t mash up easily, heat them gently in the microwave/hob. 2.Add the nut/seed butter to the mashed dates and mix well. 3. Roll into balls and freeze for 1 hour.

4.Melt dark chocolate. Coat the balls in the dark chocolate and freeze for 20minutes. See how long they can last melting in your mouth without you gobbling up their gooey centre and crisp chocolate shell!!!!

Chocolate & Dogs – not a match for Valentines Day With Valentines Day fast approaching, here is the need to know information about chocolate and dogs! Chocolate is poisonous to dogs, but how many times have you heard people say their dog ate chocolate, loved it and suffered no ill effects. Well, how chocolate affects your dog depends on many factors like the type of chocolate, the amount consumed and your dog’s size. In large enough amounts chocolate and cocoa products can be very toxic to your dog. Without getting too technical, chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine both of these substances can speed the heart rate and stimulate the nervous system of dogs. Humans easily metabolize theobromine, but dogs on the other hand process it much slower (up to 72 hours), allowing it to build up to toxic levels in their system. Now for the not so nice symptoms to watch out for! Symptoms will be different depending on the amount of chocolate your dog ingests. The onset of chocolate poisoning is usually marked by severe hyperactivity. A small amount of chocolate will probably give your dog an upset stomach with vomiting or diarrhoea, while large amounts can produce muscle tremors, seizures, increased urination, an irregular heartbeat, internal bleeding or a heart attack. Not very nice I know! And not something we would wish on our furry little friends. There is no actual treatment for chocolate poisoning, this is why it is very important to keep chocolate away from your dogs and out of reach. Affected dogs will normally be offered treatment from the vet to prevent further

absorption into their system this usually includes IV Fluids, induced vomiting and activated charcoal may be administered to help prevent additional absorption of chocolate into the system. Also one thing to note, different chocolate types have different theobromine levels. Cocoa, cooking chocolate and dark chocolate

contain the highest levels, while milk chocolate and white chocolate have the lowest. So remember to put it away this Valentine’s day and if you do suspect your dog is after eating some chocolate, make a phone call to your vet and keep an eye out for the symptoms described above.

Record attendance at Donabate Parkrun

Donabate parkrun goes from strength to strength and achieved a record attendance on January 12th with a massive 284 completing the 5k course in the beautiful park at Newbridge House. It was the 165th parkrun held in the park since its inception in October 2015. Congratulations to the following who recently reached milestones. Colette Evans, Kevin Smith (100 parkruns), Tara Hatton, Bronagh Hall, Paul Caball, Sarah Jones (50 parkruns), Peter Evans (25 volunteers). Runners, joggers and walkers of all ages and abilities are welcome to join us each Saturday at 9:30am for the free, timed 5k event. Remember to register once at www.parkrun.ie, print off your barcode and bring it with you to get a result. We would also love to hear from anyone who would like to volunteer at any of our events. All roles are easy and full training is given on the morning of events. Itâ€™s a great way to meet new people and have fun.
