Memoir/life writing at Active Age

The Active Age for All Poster Exhibition was viewed very enthusiastically in Donabate/ Portrane CC where it was on show for a week in December and again in January. It was the culmination of a series of workshops on memoir/ life writing run by an organisation called Silver Threads. The object of the workshops was to

tell the story of a photograph, and to encourage everyone to tell their story. The workshops were very well attended and were supported by a Cultural Grant from Fingal Co.Co. We hope to run another series of workshops in February. The Annual General Meeting took place in January and we were happy to welcome new

members to the committee. Registration was very successful in January but we still have places available in some courses. If you are interested in participating in these Silver Thread workshops or in any of our courses please contact activeageforall@gmail.com or TEXT only to 086 88068708.

Dublin Rural Development Programme LEADER 2014-2020

Final Call for Environmental Projects Dublin Rural LEADER on behalf of Dublin Rural LAG invites Voluntary Community Groups, Charities, Medium Enterprises, SME’s to submit Expressions of Interest for funding under the LEADER / Rural Development Programme 2014-2020. Available Budget:

Total budget of €500,000 is available to applicants. Grant amounts will range between €5,000 (min) and €200,000 (max)

Maximum Rates:

50% for Businesses, 75% for Community Projects, 100% for Training

DPR man is VHI parkrun hero of the Month

We were delighted to present Donabate man John O’Brien with an award for VHI parkrun hero of the month. When Donabate parkrun started in October 2015, John joined us and has rarely missed an event since then. It has really rekindled his love for running. John often shares his memories of races from his younger

days including the San Francisco Marathon in 1985 where one of the perks at the finish was a free phone call home. John is in his eighties but age isn’t a barrier to him. He has completed almost 200 parkruns and volunteered at almost 100 events. He nearly always arrives at the park before everyone else and more often than not has

already taken the equipment trolley out of the

storage shed as well as put up the signs and posts at the start line before anyone else arrives. He is

a real inspiration to the rest of us and an absolute gentleman. Congratulations to John on a well deserved award.

Fingal County Council were delighted to take part in Ireland’s most exciting festival of science and technology recently.The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, now in its 56th year, was a fun-filled spectacle of creativity and inspiration, offering something for people of all ages.Fingal County Council showcased innovative digital initiatives that look to improve the way we live and work in Fingal – from using drones to prevent illegal dumping, rolling out smart street furniture that can charge your phone and give you free Wi-Fi and developing interactive maker spaces to enhance creativity and innovation.The Fingal County Council stand was in the World of Science and Technology exhibition hall. At the stand, attendees could create some wearable technology, play with robotics, learn about the many digital services from Fingal Libraries, charge their devices at the 6

Fingal smart bench and take part in a 3D virtual reality experience of the City. The Digital Fingal team, Fingal Libraries, Smart Dublin and Dublin Maker were all on hand to showcase Fingal’s Digital projects and services and to answer any questions from attendees.At the heart of the Exhibition there were 1,100 students representing 244 schools across the island of Ireland who competed for the coveted title of BT Young Scientist & Technologist(s) of the Year 2020. Last year Adam Kelly, a student from Skerries Community College was awarded the overall prize for his project entitled “Optimizing the Simulation of General Quantum Circuits”, which explored efficient ways to mathematically model quantum computers. Fingal County Council named “Local Authority of the Year”

Fingal County Council has been named Local Authority of the Year at the InBusiness Recognition Awards 2019.The award was accepted by Deputy Mayor of Fingal Cllr Tom Kitt at the awards ceremony held in the Westbury Hotel in Dublin. Cllr Kitt said: “I am delighted to accept the InBusiness Award for Best County Council. A key part of our mission statement is to make Fingal the best place in Ireland to do business in and winning this award for the second successive year indicates that the work we are doing on the ground is having a positive effect on the business community.” Cllr Kitt added: “There is a growing recognition amongst all stakeholders of the

importance of local authorities and our ability to get things done. We are the closest government agency to the citizen, and business, and are therefore best placed to deliver services directly to them.”Fingal County Council Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly said: “It is a great honour to receive this accolade in recognition of our efforts to improve the quality of services we deliver to all our stakeholders. Part of our vision for Fingal is to make it a good place to do business in, so it is particularly pleasing to be recognised for our efforts in this area.”

It’s always nice to make the effort for someone who means a lot to you for Valentine’s, by cooking or baking for them.Or perhaps with lent coming up, one last indulgence might be in mind. This is a decadent and rich dessert. Quite simple to make and uses minimal ingredients. I like it with a dollop of vanilla yogurt and grated chocolate as in the picture. Ingredients: • • • 9

1.Preheat a fan oven to 180’c. 2.Blitz the dates and any remaining liquid in a food processor/blender. 3.Melt the dark chocolate carefully in a saucepan over a gentle heat and stir. Once it is all melted, remove from the heat and stir in the blitzed up dates. 4.Mix in half of the ground almonds and

2 eggs. Then add the rest of the ground almonds, the final egg and vanilla extract and combine well together. 5.Pour the mixture into a nonstick or pre-lined with parchment paper baking pan and bake in the oven at 180’c for 20 minutes.
