International Womens Day Thursday March 8th 2018 ~ 12.00~6.30pm, Parish Hall, Donabate

The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival is celebrating International Women’s Day 2018 on Thursday 8th March, in the Parish Hall in Donabate. Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. Mary McCamley, will officially launch the celebrations at 12.30pm. There will be an exhibition commemorating the Suffragists, both men and women, who fought for women’s right to vote. The exhibition will show the timeline of the Suffrage movement in Ireland, and will give a profile of the Suffragists and Suffragettes. It will feature our own Frances Power Cobbe from Newbridge House who was a feminist and a supporter of the Suffragists, and Dr. Eleanora Fleury, the first woman member of the Medico Psychological Association, now the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and deputy Resident Medical Superintendent in St. Ita’s Hospital, Portrane. The movie “Suffragette” will be screened throughout the day. “Mná na Leithinse” (Women of the Peninsula) is the theme for International Women’s Day 2018, and the celebrations will continue with a photographic exhibition of local women by photographer Carolyn Smith. The photographic display will be based on “the noble call” whereby each woman photographed nominates the next woman to be photographed. Flower Friends, a local flower arranging group, will display their stunning floral arrangements, and there will be a flower arranging demonstration and workshop. An exhibition of children’s books featuring a strong female character will be on display in the Parish Hall courtesy of Donabate/Portrane Library. We have invited children of 6th Class from the 3 local primary schools to write about a woman from a book who has inspired them. Mayor McCamley will present prizes to the winners, and they will have an opportunity to interview the Mayor. Helene Dooley will demonstrate her skills in the craft of Felting. Local artists will be in the hall working on their latest paintings. The local Guild of the ICA will be there with information about the organisation and the history of the ICA on the peninsula. will hold 3 workshops, at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm. “Connect with Angels for Relaxation” is a special workshop focussing on Relaxation and Meditation; Grounding and Protection, Angels for Healing and Protection; and Chakras and Colours ~ the essentials. Expect to feel renewed and refreshed at the end of this short workshop. Ukulele United will perform a selection of tunes. The celebrations continue at 7.30 pm in Keelings, Donabate with a talk by Peig McManus about “Celebrating Your Life”. The event will close with a Social Night of story-telling, music, poetry, song and relaxation. There will be light refreshments for everyone, and admission is FREE.

Dowling writes to minister on donabate garda station Fine Gael Local Area Representative (LAR) for Donabate, Portrane and Swords Bob Dowling, has written to the Minister for Justice, Charlie Flanagan TD outlining his views on why a Garda station should be established in Donabate. Mr Dowling wrote the letter in response to a recent canvass of the area and in response to the sharp increase in crime levels. “Everybody in Donabate and Portrane knows of a friend or family member in the area who has been subjected to horrible crimes” Mr Dowling said. He continued “this simply cannot continue and I believe the only way to prevent this is to increase the Gardaí in the area and to also provide a permanent Garda station in Donabate”. Mr Dowling spoke of the various concerns he has received from local residents, stating “I have received a huge number of emails and phone calls on this issue. Also, on a canvass in Donabate with Senator James Reilly in November, several people outlined how important this issue was to them. I have mentioned in the letter the sharp increase in crime levels recently and also the huge projected population increase in the area, which is expected to rise to 21,000 by the year 2021.” He said “the old Educate Together site opposite Donabate Community College has been essentially lying idle for the best part of a decade, and there appears to be no planned action to change that. With perfect access routes to all parts of the area, especially great vehicular access to the village itself, this is an ideal spot for the development of such a Garda station. I have outlined in the letter short term and long term solutions to these problems, and I have informed the Minister that I am available at any time to discuss these concerns. I believe we can agree upon a solution that is satisfactory to the local people”.

Any interest in a book/film club?

Donabate Library would just like to gauge interest among our public as regards the library hosting a book club or a film club, constituted of members of the local public. As regards a proposed book club, we would envisage a club that would meet once a month, probably on a weekday, during the daytime. The library would be able to source the required copies of the book for the members, and for the first few meetings, a staff member would be able to sit in and guide the discussion, until the group was confident and comfortable enough to continue on their own. As regards a film club, the library has a Quiet Room, which can comfortably hold 8 - 9

people, containing a screen, where, if desired, a film can be viewed. As with the book club, the library could source dvd copies of the film for the club members, and the library could host their regular meetings for discussion of the films. Again, for the first few meetings, a staff member would be able to sit in and guide the discussion, until the group was confident and comfortable enough to continue on their own. Tips for a stress free communion by photographer Constanze O’Toole

As a photographer, I am very lucky to be part of the Communion celebrations in our community every year. It is a special day for the child, family, school and community. When the time for my own children came to receive their First Holy communion, I was surprised how much pressure I felt in the build up to the day. Here are some tips based on my own and my client’s experiences: • Take your time and involve the children in finding the ideal communion outfit. Make sure it is comfortable for them to wear it for hours on the special day and reflects their personalities. • Don’t leave the shoes to the last minute. Communion shoes seem to fly out of the shops as soon as they come in. Kids can wear them for a few hours in the house to ‘break them in’ before the big day. • You often end up with more accessories than you anticipated. Jewellery and watches are popular gifts and kids like to wear everything at once. Select a mix of gifts and your own selected accessories in advance. • Schedule in some extra time after the ceremony. It takes time to leave the church and socialise with the other families. You don’t want to feel under pressure to be on time to host your dinner party or do your family photo shoot. • Call your selected service providers: caterers, restaurant etc the week before the communion to confirm your booking. • You could do the communion photo shoot, before the big day. E.g. when you do a dress rehearsal with the final outfits or after girls get their hair done. • Finally, remember to enjoy the special day with your child! 12

Fingal County Council welcomes announcement of Metro Link

Fingal County Council has welcomed the announcement of a metro system linking Swords and Sandyford at the launch of Project Ireland 2040 in Sligo today. The Metro North project, which was to have run from Swords to St Stephen’s Green, has been

extended and renamed Metro Link. According to Project Ireland 2040 - National Development Plan 20182027, Metro Link will be complete by 2027. The Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, who attended today’s launch, said that

the decision to finally give the green light to a metro system for Fingal is a major boost. “A northbound metro system is the most crucial piece of infrastructure needed in Ireland because not only will it link the Airport with Dublin City Centre,

it will also link Swords and North County Dublin with existing public transport infrastructure such as LUAS and DART. “This will be a game-changer for Fingal as the new metro system will allow for the sustainable growth of Swords in accordance with our Development Plan. I am also pleased that the National Planning Framework specifically recognises the future development potential of Swords” said Mr Reid. The Council’s Director of Strategic Infrastructure and Planning, AnnMarie Farrelly, said that Fingal has already put in place the necessary preparatory steps required to fully exploit the arrival of a metro system for the benefit of the local community and local business. “The strategic development sites along the metro route have the potential to deliver significant new housing and local employment from now to 2040. The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Mary McCamley, said: “On behalf of my colleagues I welcome its inclusion in the National Planning Framework and the National Development Plan and I look forward to the project being delivered as quickly as possible because it is long overdue.”

Donabate Presbyterian Church- here for all the community

Donabate Presbyterian Church is the newest Presbyterian congregation in Ireland. It was set up in 2010 and has been meeting in the Donabate Portrane Community Centre since its beginning. They started with a few dozen people and now over 200 count it as their church home. Very few people who come are from a Presbyterian background – those who have joined share a common desire to understand Christian faith and live it out. They have found that as society becomes more secular people of all ages in the locality are searching for spiritual meaning and purpose. Over the coming months the Church will be running an introduction/ refresher course in the basics of Christianity called Alpha. It is happening for the seven Tuesday nights before Easter in the back room at Keeling’s pub. An 14

hour of reflection on Good Friday will take place at 8pm at the Parish Hall, Donabate. On Easter Saturday (31 March) the Church will be holding a Chocolate Egg Scramble for the kids of the peninsula at 10.30am at the front of Newbridge House. Last year over 2000 small chocolate eggs were found (and eaten!). On Sunday 1 April, they will meet at their usual home of Donabate Portrane Community Centre at 10.30 to celebrate Easter morning. Further down the road, their annual Discovery Kids’ Club, will take place for all primary school kids, 30 July to 3 August. New Social Enterprise Development Fund services and reinvest their profits back into their social mission. The applicant must be a social enterprise with a not-for-profit legal form. Social enterprises are defined as organisations that:

• Have a clear social mission and make a social impact • Generate income from goods or services • Reinvest any surplus into achieving their mission • Are separate from government or state agencies.

A €1.6m fund to support social enterprises in Ireland has been established by Social Innovation Ireland (SIFI), in partnership with Fingal County Council and all 31 Local Authorities across Ireland. The Fund is financed by the Department of Rural and Community Development, from the Dormant Accounts Fund and IPB Insurance. The Social Enterprise Development Fund is

the largest of its kind to be invested in Ireland’s social enterprise sector and will be delivered over the course of two years. Up to eight successful applicants per year will each receive a grant of €50,000. Social enterprises are organisations whose mission is to have a positive effect on society. They generate revenue through their products or

The successful applicants will also receive a place on Social Innovation Fund Ireland’s six-month Accelerator programme. Additional places will be reserved for the most promising social enterprises across all 31 Local Authorities in Ireland. The programme is designed to help social enterprises develop their business skills and to provide them with ongoing support and advice so that they develop sustainable enterprises. The fund supported by IPB Insurance is now open for applications from social enterprises in Fingal. John Evoy, founder of Men’s Sheds has been appointed the Manager of the Social Enterprise Development Fund by Social Innovation Fund Ireland. Celebrating Chinese new year at Citynorth Hotel (CITYNORTH Hotel & Conference Centre, Gormanston, Co. Meath)

The CityNorth Hotel celebrated Chinese New Year – Year of the dog, with a “China Red” reception on Wednesday 14th February. Madame Xue He, Commercial Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy, launched the celebrations and spoke about the potential for increased trade between Ireland and China with over 70,000 Chinese visitors to Ireland last year. This is great news for the Drogheda, East Meath and Louth region ahead of the start of Cathay Pacific direct flights to Dublin in June. The evening was a lavish affair with the Lord Mayor of Drogheda, Pio Smith, many councillors and local business people in attendance. “It has been a privilege to collaborate with Fáilte Ireland and become one of the first hotels in Ireland to be officially China Ready.” said Mr Cyril Laffan, General Manager for the CityNorth Hotel, he also commented that “The hotel has undertaken several measures to be culturally welcoming to our Chinese guests. For example, our staff have been trained, we’ve adopted Union Pay as a method of payment, QR Codes have been added to our menus which can be scanned to translate the menu into Chinese and we are working with Emerald Media to setup social media platform, WeChat and various marketing campaigns.” 16

• 1 avocado • 2 eggs • 1 handful washed spinach leaves • 140g smoked salmon • 2 tablespoons cream cheese (Feel free to change up the cheese, mozzarella would also work ‘grate’!) • 2 teaspoons paprika/ cayenne pepper/black pepper • 1 tablespoon chopped chives Contact us: communitylocals@gmail.com

Method The celebrations are ‘March’ing in this month with Mother’s Day, St Patrick’s Day and to top it all off an ‘egg-cellent’ finish with Easter! Hopefully “the luck of the Irish” will stand to us in the Rugby Six Nations and we will all welcome the brighter evenings with the clocks going forward. My ‘egg-ocado’ brunch below is a tasty, quick and satisfying way to start the day of events, celebrating or indeed for the day after! Easily prepped and with the option of baking in the oven or the microwave, younger members of the family could treat Mummy or Granny for Mother’s Day. It has an Irish theme with the green, white and orange colours and has an ‘egg-travagant’ twist to the usual ‘Irish breakfast’!! Makes for 1 If oven baking, preheat oven to 200’c 1. Slice through the avocado with a sharp knife lengthwise until you hit the pit and repeat for the other sides so that there is a circular cut all the way around the avocado. Take the avocado in your hands and twist to pull the 2 halves apart. Remove the pit. 2. Scoop out about half of the avocado flesh and keep aside. 3. Place the avocado halves onto a baking tray or microwavable plate and crack 1 egg into each halve. 4. Sprinkle with seasoning of your choice (paprika/cayenne pepper etc.). 5. Place the tray in the oven and cook at 180’c for 20 minutes or microwave for 2 minutes but stop and check it at 30 second intervals (This ensures that the egg cooks thoroughly as the avocado acts as an insulator). 6. Meanwhile prepare your serving plate with layered smoked salmon, spinach and cream cheese. 7. Place the cooked egg-ocado on top of the layers. Sprinkle with chopped chives. Being a mother and a grandmother myself I appreciate this day every year. One of my favourite memories is my two daughters when they were young bringing me breakfast in bed on a tray, with a buttercup flower in a jug. Little girl’s and mammy’s-friends forever, and so it should be ! It should be the one day mammies get the day off every year, no cooking, no cleaning, no hassle, please. Daughters and sons, have you thought about how you plan on treating Mum this year.? Here are a few ideas to help you out. Plants and flowers are a beautiful gift especially if they are long lasting in the house, as a warming memory of your thoughts and kindness. Perfume- Has mums favourite perfume run out ? It can be expensive but always nice to say to her friends “ it’s by Chanel -My Johnny bought me that for Mother’s Day.” . A gift token for a Spa with relaxing treatments is always well received. Me personally - some Botox treatments. Not for all the ladies out there but still getting more popular than you would know dear friends. A meal out, dinner, lunch, high tea spending luxury time having food served rather than cooking as cooking is such a drag to most mums. Thank god for Mc Donald’s. Artists’ support scheme-funding increased Fingal County Council is delighted to announce the 2018 Artists’ Support Scheme. This strand of funding, which has increased by 50% this year, allows professional artists to avail of an award towards travel/professional development opportunities, a residency or the development of work. The objective of the Artists’ Support Scheme is to support individual professional artists from Fingal to develop their artistic practice. The award is open to practising artists at all stages in their professional careers working in music, visual art, drama, literature & dance. To be eligible to apply, applicants must have been born, have studied, or currently reside in the Fingal administrative area. Speaking about the award, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid said “Last year 27 bursaries were awarded to artists across all disciplines. Fingal County Council is proud to provide funding to professional artists through this scheme and the increase in funding reflects the Council’s continued commitment to support and encourage artistic excellence in Fingal.” The funding is for projects/initiatives which will take place from 1 June - 31 December, 2018. Another season begins at Portrane AFC but before that we must first recognise the season just past. We had a very successful year with all our juvenile and adult teams. Especially our Under 17 team that won the U17 B NDSL. The club would also like to recognise the 25 years hard work of Terry Porter, who has retired from the club executive. His years of work helping to keep the club running is greatly appreciated by current members of the club. We are an expanding organisation which for the coming season will have over 200 players across 14 teams and the age of our playing population ranges from 8 to almost 50 years. We have invested strongly in our facilities on the Donabate Road, Portrane over the past ten years. The 2018 season is now upon us (February â€“ October) and new players are always welcome.
