Dowling receives nominations to contest local elections Fine Gael Local Area Representative for Donabate, Rush and Lusk Bob Dowling has in recent days received two nominations to contest next year’s local elections in the new Rush/Lusk and Donabate Ward. Mr Dowling, who has been a community activist for over 20 years, said he was delighted to have received the nominations with such warm support from his party colleagues. “Personally it is a great honour for me to have received these nominations from my closest supporters. I am delighted that both the Donabate branch and the Rush/Lusk branch decided that I was a suitable candidate to contest these elections for Fine Gael. I am looking forward to the selection of candidates, which will occur in the coming weeks”. Mr Dowling was also nominated alongside Jim Monks, a well-known local figure from the Naul and Mr Dowling said he was looking forward to working with Mr. Monks in the future. “Jim and I have known each other for many years and I am eagerly anticipating working together with him over the next coming months to provide an honest and hardworking Fine Gael team that is capable of taking two seats at the next local elections”. Chairperson of the Donabate Branch, Mr. Anthony Harris praised Dowling’s hardworking ethic over the last 20 years in Donabate and said he would be an ‘ideal councillor’ for the area. Mr. Harris said “Bob has been working alongside many other key volunteers in this area to deliver honest and positive results for the people of the community. He has worked incredibly hard on many campaigns, such as the campaign for the removal of the proposed monster sewage plant in Portrane and he led the campaign for the establishment of the local Secondary School. In recent years, I have seen Bob first hand work tirelessly to support residents associations and community groups who have been subjected to bad planning by developers. I know Bob, if elected, will bring about more positive change to Donabate and Portrane”. Member of the Rush/Lusk branch and local community volunteer in Rush and Lusk Niall Gosson, pointed to Mr. Dowling’s experience in education as a reason why he would be an ideal councillor after the next election. “I

have been canvassing with Bob numerous times now and he has great energy to represent the new ward. Also as someone who has worked in education for over 35 years, he will be the perfect person for the job when it comes to the education demands in the fastest growing and youngest population in Ireland. I believe he has the skills and the commitment to serve the people of the new ward well”, he stated. Finally, Mr Dowling said he was anticipating a positive local election campaign, where he wanted to discuss, raise and work on issues that affect the hardworking people of Donabate, Rush and Lusk. “In my work as a Local Area Representative for the party over the last number of years I have gained a unique viewpoint as to the various issues that the local people are concerned about. Education is a key issue that I will be campaigning on, but also on a wider basis of the need to address the dire infrastructural deficits in all areas, and I will continue to press for proper planning and consultation in Donabate, Rush and Lusk” he concluded.

Council to retender for Hearse Road upgrade project

Fingal County Council has announced that it is going to have to retender for the upgrade of the Hearse Road scheme in Donabate, adjacent to Prospect House.Apologising for the inconvenience that the delay will cause to local residents and businesses, Fingal County Council has said it had reluctantly taken the decision to terminate the existing contract.The aim is still one of having the new contractors on site in early 2019. The Council say the work will improve road conditions for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians along this busy stretch of road, and involves road improvements, drainage and, resurfacing and boundary works along the Hearse Road approach to the railway bridge in Donabate. Funding of the road upgrade, which as part of the planning conditions attached to the construction of the National Forensic Hospital, has yet to be transferred to Fingal County Council from the HSE. Director of Planning and Strategic Infrastructure AnnMarie Farrelly said: â€œFingal County Council has reluctantly taken this decision to ensure that the project is completed in accordance with public work contract requirements.The upgrading of the Hearse Road in Donabate continues to be a key priority for Fingal County Council and we expect to have a new contractor back out on site as soon as possible.We are eager to complete this high quality project, which will have an enormous benefit for all those living and working in the Donabate and Portrane areas.â€?

DPCC disappointed with site for new school Donabate Portrane Community Council has expressed disappointment

at a reply it got from the Education Minister about the provision of schools for the area.

The community council had a Dáil question answered by Minister Joe

McHugh.

The question inquired about the rationale behind the decision to

provide the first of three new primary schools in Donabate on a site which is in contravention of the Donabate Local Area Plan (LAP).

The LAP states that the first of four schools to be built is on the Spires

East land near Ballymastone in the village. The land is owned by the

council.But the community has been told that it has been decided that the first of four new schools in the area is to be built on the Corballis lands on the peninsula.

Minister McHugh was told the Corballis site is privately-owned and

the taxpayer has to pay for the purchase of the site.He was also told the Fingal Schools Model was always best practice, with Fingal providing

publicly owned sites for 50pc less of the market value with the monies raised then invested in the local community.

Donabate Portrane Community Council pointed out that it is

Government policy is to build schools on publicly-owned lands. The Minister responded in his Dáil reply that a site identification

and acquisition process is currently underway for new school, with

the assistance of Fingal County Council under the Memorandum of

Understanding for the acquisition of school sites.No decision has yet

been made regarding its location, the Minister said.But Mr McHugh

went on to say that through engagement with Fingal County Council

it has been indicated that the Corballis lands are likely to be developed ahead of those at Ballymastone, within which the Spires East site is located.

A spokesperson for Donabate Portrane Community Council said it

welcomed the announcement of a much-needed school.“However, local

democracy is being undermined and this is a cause of serious concern to Donabate Portrane Community Council,” the spokesperson added.

A business plan on the need for a school at the Spires East site has

been submitted by Donabate Portrane Community Council to the

Department of Education. This outlines the phasing of the local area

plan and rationale for putting the next school on the Spires East site.

Henchy on board for a bit of history

Cllr Adrian Henchy set out to capture a bit of local history recently. He told us the story in his own words. “ At 11pm Saturday night December 1st, the last Dublin Bus 33B left the Burrow, Portrane for Swords so I took the opportunity to thank Dublin Bus and it’s driver for the wonderful public transport service they have provided since their foundation in 1987 and before that CIE which operated the 33B back into the late 1940s early 50s. Last night’s final service was driven by a gentleman by the name of Zoltan originally from Hungary who has made Ireland his home over the last 10 years. This prompted me to carry out an exercise with my own father to remember as many of the former Dublin Bus/CIE drivers/conductors that operated the 33B over the decades. Many of them sadly have gone before us. No doubt there are some names we will have forgotten especially in more recent times, so hopefully some of the younger readers will remember recent drivers. So here goes Conductors: Sean McGee 1950s,Mick Neary 1960s, Sean Foley 60s, 70s & 80s, Sean Cronin 60s70s80s, Oliver Bentley 60s, 70s, 80s and Tommy Groves 50s60s. Drivers: Bill Rafter 50s, 60s 70s, Larry Boylan 50s, 60s, Jimmy O Hara 50s, 60s 70s,Willie Hoey 60s, 70s, 80s,Mick Savage 60s,70s, 80s, Frank Marry 60s, 70s,80s, Tom Channing 80s, 90s and Hughie Sheridan 70s, 80s, 90s, Jack Nulty 80s,90s. My own personal memories growing up in Portrane in the 1970s/80s are of drivers Mick Savage, Frank Marry and Hughie Sheridan, three lovely men who knew everyone on the peninsula and would if they could, pick you up and drop you to your house. Of course Dublin Bus have not totally severed their ties to Portrane/ Donabate as they will continue to operate the daily 33D service to the City Centre via The Port Tunnel. DCC hosts WE ARE THE POETS Event

Donabate CC held a poetry event recently, We are the Poets, in the school library. We were joined by students, parents, grandparents and members of staff. We were thrilled to be joined by Seán Love, the co-founder of Fighting Words, and also Dr. Orla Lehane, the Education Director of Fighting Words. Elizabeth Akinwande opened our poetry event with a powerful monologue titled ‘For the Sake of Melanin’, highlighting issues of racism. The audience were left speechless and in awe at Elizabeth’s riveting performance. First year, Ava Pender, followed Elizabeth with a reading of a Spanish poem she wrote. The poem reminded us all to be kind and that a smile is the same in every language. Gavin Murphy performed a wonderful reading of Stephen James Smith’s poem ‘No Other Words’, about a boy called Darren with special needs who lived in a care home. Gavin explained to us that his grandad and parents worked in St. Ita’s Hospital so the poem had a significant meaning for him. Gavin’s grandad joined us to support Gavin at the event. Second Year Student, Lee Kenny shared a poem that he had written about World War I. Lee’s poem demonstrated his knowledge about war and in his poetry he expressed his sorrow about the loss of life in World War I. Eve Moore from Sixth year did a reading of ‘Le Couer Éléphant’ along with Jenny Thompson, Fathia Rasheed, and Andrea Whelan from Transition Year. The students were wonderful and it was great to hear students speaking confidently in other languages.

Fifth Year’s Sarah Oliver read her own work titled ‘Dear Teacher’ which highlighted how rumours travel around the school. The event also had a musical performance from Seán Lyons from sixth year, who sang his own song while playing guitar. An Irish translation of Maya Angelou’s ‘And Still I Rise’ was wonderfully executed by sixth-year student Aoife Ní Laoi. To close the event, Dean Kelly and Kieran Conroy performed a reading from Stephen James Smith’s ‘Dublin You Are’.

Donabate CC -0ur School Garden

By Jenny Thompson, TY Journalism In light of the Sonaírte workshops which have taken place recently involving TY classes in Donabate CC, we here in TY Journalism wanted to highlight the good work being done towards environmental sustainability in the school garden. In order to do this we reached out to Mary Jones, a member of the Parents’ Council and asked her some questions regarding the school garden. Mary told us that the garden has been a part of this school since it was built, but the more recent addition of the polytunnel happened four years ago. The path was

placed in 2016, funded by the Parents’ Council, and was constructed with help from volunteers. When asked about her future visions for the garden, Mary said this “It has huge potential. I see solar panels that power lights and water butts to irrigate the land.I see Art works and a notice board made by the woodwork class. I see students laughing and smiling and getting vitamin D. I see music being played and drama being performed. I see wellness classes and stretch-it-out time for a group of young citizens who are making a presence felt, that pays it forward! I see Acts of Kindness, teamwork, leadership skills. I see a garden that reminds us of those we

miss and love. In memory of......... maybe that is what I enjoy there. I remember my friend and all she valued. A garden needs people. It needs you all. Then there are no walls and no gates, just a space we all share that grows as we care for it.” Mary was kind enough to leave us with a quote from Margaret Mead..“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world: indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” If we learned anything in Sonairte, it is that the world can be changed for the better through small, environmentally conscious actions, whether at home, in school, in work or even in your own back garden!

DonabateCommunity College News Unfortunate Defeat For DCC Senior Basketball Team Report by Ali Kavanagh and Lara Browne, TY Journalism

The Senior Boys Basketball team were unlucky last week in their semi-final as they were defeated by Adamstown Community College. With home advantage, DCC played admirably but came up short, losing out on a final score of 41 - 54 in favour of Adamstown. The game had an intense first quarter with scores from John Troy and Adam Barker from DCC. There were many scores from the Adamstown team also and with both teams battling bravely, the score was tight. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 5-9 in favour of Adamstown. Adamstown had possession of the ball for the majority of the second quarter, gaining 13 points through free throws. Donabate struggled during the second quarter but still managed to score an impressive five points, with free throws from John Troy and Adam Barker. After halftime, the boys went out strong, making a significant come back in hope of claiming victory in the end. DCC presented strong defensive tactics against their opponents in the third quarter and the score was almost even. This was an impressive quarter for DCC. After a foul from the opponents and a throw

It was held in the Sunshine House from 9am-2:30pm.Young SVP come to schools and hold workshops around Ireland informing us on zero poverty and poverty in Ireland.Firstly, we were divided into colour coded groups and made badges with our names on them. We then got split up into groups and did a get to know your group activity. The groups were made up of different schools from across the whole Dublin region. The first speaker did an introduction to SVP and poverty in Ireland. They encouraged us to participate in the talk by asking us questions and getting our groups’ opinions on the different topics. They gave everyone a piece of paper with a small paragraph on it. Everyone had to read it and see how many f ’s they saw in the paragraph. Some people saw 3 whereas others saw 8. The real number of f ’s was 6. They told us this was because of our blind spots. We have 250,000 blind spots and these cause our brains shut out information that are not of value to us. With the information they gave to us, we then had to present the workshop to the 1st years in our school. It was very enjoyable as we all had an interest in SVP and all contributed to making a presentation for the 1st years.We would all like to thank Ms. Sheehan for selecting us to go on this talk as we all learned something new and we hope to work with them in the future. Active age for all -up for the challenge It is a New Year… so Happy New Year to all our members, and we hope you are ready to take up the challenge of getting mentally and physically fit in 2019. We were busy in November and December. We had a very successful talk from Andrew McCann, from Citizens Information who wrote “Know your Rights”. We all went home with queries about our benefits, determined to write our wills, and to look more carefully at our pensions! On the 6th of December we had a lovely Carol session with the children from Bright Sparks Creche. Cantóirí - The new Active Age singing group - outdid themselves and the children were wonderful as always! Mince Pies and Mulled Wine(non-alcoholic) were served. It was a great start to the Christmas Season. Donations for Cambodia were generous. Registration for the new year will take place in DPCC on the week of Monday the 21st to Friday25th of January. Details of the times and days will be available on our website and on the notice board in the Centre. We will also email all existing members. If you are not already a member of Active Age now is your chance to join! We Have an extensive Programme to suit all abilities! Our Programme include Pilates, French, Sit and Fit, Yoga, Bowls, Bridge, Pickleball, Line Dancing, Cards, Tai Chi, Photography, and Singing & Music! We also have links to our Cycling Group Peninsula Pedlars, and the local walking group. In the Spring, Croquet will be back and hopefully Tennis. If anyone would like to start a Golf Society or Pitch and Putt, we would be delighted! We have just received a Special offer for membership from Gym Plus in Applewood for Active Age members. Anyone over 55 is welcome to join us, to make new friends, and learn a new skill! Our AGM is on the Wednesday 30th of January at 11.30am and we are looking forward to seeing as many members as possible attending. Milestone Mania at Donabate Parkrun

Tommy, Peter and Evelyn who all completed their 100th parkrun recently

It was milestone mania at Donabate parkrun this month. Colette Evans, Thomas Lara and Sorcha Healy all volunteered for the 25th time. Evelyn Wilde, Tommy Neilsen, Peter Evans, James Keaney and Paul Ryan all completed their 100th parkrun while Sarah Logan, Erika Nevins and Patrick McCormack completed their 50th run. Evelyn has been a member of our core team since the commencement of Donabate parkrun and has almost as many volunteer credits as runs. Congratulations to Evelyn and all our other milestoners. If you attended the Winter Fete at DPETNS or the Christmas Fayre at St Patrick’s Boys’ School there is a good chance that you would have spotted our Event Director, Sean Greensit flying the parkrun flag. We know that there are lots of you out there who haven’t tried parkrun yet but have been meaning to give it a go. Why not make it one of your New Year’s resolutions ? We welcome runners, joggers, walkers and volunteers of all ages and abilities. You just register once at www.parkrun.ie and print off your barcode. Gorgeous Granola Granola can be full of fibre from oats, nuts, seeds and dried fruit in addition to lots of vitamins and minerals. However it can also be full of sugar and a lot of granola in Irish supermarkets are quite high in sugar. This homemade recipe for granola below is simple to make. Wholesome and satisfying to have. And it is scrumptious with fresh fruit and natural yogurt or milk for breakfast, supper or as a snack!

Ingredients • 350g oats • 100g chopped pecan nuts • 150g other chopped nuts (such as hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews or flaked almonds) • 150g mixed seeds (such as pumpkin, chia, sunflower, flaxseed/linseed) • 130ml maple syrup/honey • 2 teaspoons cinnamon • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract/essence • 40ml melted coconut oil or rapeseed oil 16

• 150g dried fruit of your desire (such as raisins, sultanas, cranberries, chopped dates, chopped apricots)

Method 1.Preheat the oven to 160’c. 2.Place a baking sheet or a piece of parchment paper onto a baking tray. (This is to prevent the granola mixture from sticking to the baking tray). 3.Add the melted coconut oil/rapeseed oil, maple syrup, vanilla and cinnamon into a large mixing bowl and stir to combine. 4.Add the remaining ingredients (EXCEPT the dried fruit) into the mixing bowl and coat the dry ingredients with the moist ingredients. Use your hands to really bind the mixture well together into small clumps/clusters. 5.Spread this mixture as an even layer on the lined baking tray. Use a second lined baking tray if needed. 6.Bake in the oven at 150’c for 35-40

minutes until the granola is golden. Keep an eye on the granola and turn the tray half-way through baking to ensure all the granola is baked evenly. Avoid stirring the granola as this will reduce the granola clumps/clusters. 7.Make sure the granola is completely cool (this will ensure you get nice crunchy clusters!). Then add the dried fruit and store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks or freeze for up to 1 month.
