Active Age really is for the young at heart

Active Age for All has had a very busy month registering people for this year’s classes. We now have over 200 members! As part of our Wellness Programme we have added Mindfulness and Meditation this year which fits in very nicely with our Yoga classes which are now on twice a week. On Tuesday and Friday mornings. To this year’s programme we have added Croquet - Cobbes Croquet in collaboration with Croquet Ireland and Newbridge House under the ownership of FCC. Places still available on

Wednesday afternoon. This year has also seen the introduction of Pickleball! At the moment we are running the !st Community Adult Pickleball Course in the country. It is a racquet game with elements of Tennis and Badminton played on an indoor court. All the Pickleballers are very excited by their new sport and we hope to expand the numbers when the course is finished. Bowls is still one of our popular sports and it will take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons along with Pickleball, in the Sports Hall.

We have also added Beginners Bridge this year and we have places still available if anyone wants a stimulating two hours on Tuesday afternoon. Beginners French is also a new addition! We have places available. We are lucky to have an excellent teacher, who will stimulate those brain cells and hopefully retard the aging process! Tuesday morning. One of our most popular additions this year has been Singing and Music on Thursday at 12.00. The opportunity to sing again has been a source of wonder and enjoyment to the participants! We are looking for men so come along and lend your voice! The group will sing at Carols for Cambodia in the Community Centre on the 6th of December - an Intergenerational Fundraising Event. Mince Pies and Mulled Wine will be served after the Carols! Please come and support a worthy cause! A date for your diary 23rd of November at 10.30 in Donabate/Portrane Community Centre! We have organised for Andrew McCann from Citizens Information Services to speak to us on Health and Wealth. He will talk about Pensions, our Entitlements, Writing a Will, Health Benefits for example the Treatment Abroad Scheme, and Home Improvement Grants. Henchy welcomes Ballymastone 80/20 housing developments

Cllr Adrian Henchy has welcomed news of a phased housing development on the Council owned lands at Ballamastone, Donabate which are earmarked to provide for up to 1,200 houses as adapted in the Donabate Local Area Plan March 2016. He said, “I have been campaigning for Donabate and Portrane to ensure that all future housing is delivered in phased development and in tandem with supporting community and physical infrastructure. Before any ramping up of housing it was critical that Fingal County Council provided the infrastructural investment required to address traffic and pedestrian safety and, in particular, the new Donabate Distributor Road which will provide alternative access into Donabate and Portrane. This will bring much needed

relief to the current congestion we see every day in and around Donabate Village. The new road is progressing on time and is expected to open late Summer 2019. Along with new housing, we must also protect and enhance the existing natural amenities of Donabate Portrane and improve access to established local amenity areas through the creation of a network of designated green routes. At a recent full Council Meeting I was very pleased to finally get confirmation from the Director of Planning that the much longed for and talked about Donabate-Malahide Greenway will finally see a planning application go to An Bord Pleanala in the final quarter this year and once this is successful and delivered, the next phase will be to bring the Greenway from Donabate to Skerries.” Cllr Henchy continued, “ Recently Local Area Councillors get an up to date briefing on the proposed development of the Ballamastone lands from the Planning & Strategic Department. At the previous briefings on this project when it was mooted that the desired breakdown for housing on these Council owned lands was 50% Private and 50% Social/Affordable, I stood alone in strongly opposing this model. I have never wavered in my determination to try and move the position of both the Executive and my colleagues by at all times putting the needs of Donabate Portrane first. I was prepared to wait for this outcome and was quietly confident that future builders/developers would share with me the absolutely fantastic place Donabate Portrane is to live in, to work in or to visit.” He added, “I am pleased that following the briefing the Council Executive have decided the development of housing at Ballamastone will be constructed at 80% Private/Affordable and 20% Social. I look forward to working closely with my party’s housing spokesperson Darragh O’Brien TD in ensuring affordable home ownership is at the heart of this scheme in Ballamastone. As I have said on many occasions in the Council Chamber - it is not just about the delivery of housing, we must deliver a vibrant and sustainable community that not only meets the needs of our future residents, but fully respects and enhances life for our current residents.”

‘Steel Magnolias comes to Donabate’ Nov 1st4th

Donabate Portrane Dramatic Society brings the iconic ‘Steel Magnolias’ to the stage in its latest production. Although better known as the 1989 movie starring Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Julia Roberts

Balrothery: €100,000 has been allocated towards the enhancement of historic, commercial and recreational core of Balrothery, including the creation of new pedestrian linkages and street parking at the Balrothery Heritage Centre.

Fingal County Council has welcomed the allocation of €600,000 towards seven ambitious projects under the 2018 Town and Village Renewal Scheme.Projects in Lusk, Balrothery, Rush, and Portrane have been included in the allocation of €597,960 awarded to Fingal County Council.Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring announced total funding of €21million under the 2018 Town and Village Renewal Scheme, a key part of the Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development. The funding will allow the Council progress the projects which aim to enhance and rejuvenate each of the seven towns and villages. Amongst the Fingal allocations are: €200,000 – Development of a tourism hub in Lusk on a strategic site within the village, which will include the delivery of a permanent exhibition space themed on the Life and Times of Thomas Ashe, a key nationalist in the 1916 Rising and a central figure in the community of Lusk and the greater Fingal region. The allocations include : €100,000 – Enhancement of historic, commercial and recreational core of Balrothery, including the creation of new pedestrian linkages and street parking at the Balrothery Heritage Centre. €100,000 – Enhancement of Rush Main Street, including a Paint and Shopfront Improvement Scheme, and Signage Provision to rejuvenate and revitalise the main street. €32,000 – Portrane Village enhancements to rejuvenate the appearance of the village and the green space area. How to avoid a potential tax liability for unmarried couples Considering that the 2016 Census showed that there are over 152,000 cohabiting, unmarried couples in Ireland, it’s worth making sure that any cover is set up correctly to avoid potentially large tax liabilities. Let’s take “John” & “Mary” who live together but are not married. If they have a life policy that covers both of them for €300,000, in the event of a claim, depending on how the premiums were paid, there could be a sizeable tax liability. If John passes away and the premiums were paid from a joint account that both contributed to, then Mary is deemed to have inherited 50% of the proceeds (€150,000). Not being married, she is only entitled to the “Stranger’s” tax-free threshold of €16,250, so she is liable to pay tax on the balance (€133,750 x 33% = €44,137.50 tax bill!) If John paid the premiums, Mary is deemed to have inherited all of the proceeds, leaving her with a tax bill of €93,637.50. If Mary paid all of the premiums herself, then there is no tax liability. It is important that couples in this situation set up their cover accordingly, by doing 2 x “life of another” plans. This way, each pays for the cover on their partner and then there would not be a tax liability in the event of a claim. This can often be done at no more cost than they pay for a joint plan. Taking a few minutes to review what you have in place for something as important as this can make a huge difference. If you have friends or family that this may apply to, make a suggestion for them to read this to see if there is anything that needs adjusting. Fingal PPN Co-ordinator represents the youth of Ireland at the UN Fingal Public Participation Network co-ordinator Jamie Moore has been appointed a Youth Advocate to the UN General Assembly in New York. Jamie is passionate and experienced in the community and voluntary spheres, and he has been acknowledged for this through awards such as the Gold Gaisce Award, All Island Pride of Place Award and Excellence in Local Government Award.Hailing from Dungarvan, he currently co-ordinates the Fingal Public Participation Network (PPN) in Fingal County Council and sits on the National PPN Advisory Group in the Department of Rural and Community Development. Jamie has been selected together with Aisling O’Boyle, from Dundrum, to join Ireland’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in New York this Autumn. As Ireland’s UN Youth Delegates for 2018/19 they work closely with Ireland’s Permanent Mission to the UN and represent the youth of Ireland during sessions of the UN committee dealing with human rights issues. The programme is run by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Irish Aid, and the National

The ultimate objective of governments should be to provide the necessary infrastructure and services to ensure wellbeing of young people and empower them to break the cycle of poverty and to become agents of change in their lives, and the lives of their families and communities.” He emphasised the role of youth in shaping the future, calling for, “UN Member States and civil society to take radical steps to deliver on this, working with and for young people to be the generation for change. Young people make up 25 per cent of the world’s population today, but they make up 100 per cent of the future”.

DCC students were on their travels The Gaisce students at Newgrange

Gaisce Trip to Newgrange By Jenny Thompson, Clodagh O’Dea and Emma Higgins On Monday 24th of September, TY and 5th year students partaking in the Gaisce programme embarked on their “adventure journey”. Gaisce is a self-development programme, which 300,000 people have participated in to date. DCC’s Transition Year students are striving to attain the Bronze Award, which requires students to engage in work in the fields of community involvement, personal skill and physical recreation, with students also being required to go on an adventure journey. The Bronze award applicants arrived at the school

Our showjumping team competes with the best. Report by Cara Spagnoletti A very well done to Samantha Bretzer, Hazel McGoey and Kate Willett who competed at the inter schools recently. Kate, Hazel and Samantha all competed in the individual event with Samantha finishing top of the pile! Unfortunately the team picked up a few faults in the team event, but they represented their school with pride. Also well done to Samantha Bretzer who won a Showjumping Ireland pony class on Saturday in Cavan. She beat 100 other ponies and riders! No easy thing competing against riders that competed at European Championships this year. Afterwards I interviewed one of the team

at 8:45 am and boarded the bus to Newgrange Lodge in Donore Co.Meath. They arrived at Newgrange Lodge around 9:50 and prepared to set off on their hike. The hike began tumultuously seeing students trekking through marshy boglands alongside the scenic views of the River Boyne. The entertaining chaos of the bog was followed by the serenity of open fields. After stopping for lunch outside Oldbridge House in Drogheda, the students set off again this time, trading the countryside for the busy roads of Drogheda. All in all the walk took roughly six hours to complete, and the students arrived in Newgrange lodge around 3:30pm. The students were greeted with cosy accommodation, and a much needed hot meal courtesy of the Lodge. The students participated in team building activities, and the rest of the

After that I had to jump a timed speed round clear and have a fast time.” Q How was your experience at the show ? – A-“It was a very early start but overall it was a great day, everyone did really well and it was very exciting “ Congratulations to all three students and we wish them well in the rest of their competitions.

The students arrived back at the lodge and boarded the bus to Donabate, but not without making a final stop in McDonald’s Balbriggan for a well deserved treat. A DCC student at the Peace Wall

History trip to belfast Report by Aoife Lyster, 6th Year Early Tuesday morning 9th of October, fifth and sixth year students were boarding a bus to Belfast. This year’s history trip was jammed packed, with students only returning to Donabate at around 7pm. The bus departed from the school before 8.20am. The trip was narrated by Sean, the tour coordinator. He was enamoured with the history of Ireland. He told of the Battle of the Boyne and the various myths of the route, such as the struggle for the Brown Bull. Not long after ten, the group had arrived. Their first destination, Stormont. The impressive structure commanded a presence, sitting proud overlooking Belfast city. The students were checked into security and ushered inside. Intricate plaster adorned the ceiling and delicate carvings were etched into the stone. The group crowded around the guide, Marina. She explained the purpose of Stormont and its history. Built in 1932, the Parliament Buildings had to be camouflaged during WW2. A mixture of tar and

cow manure was used to hide the white stones of the building. Afterwards, it took as long as three years to remove the mixture, and the Parliament Buildings have never been the same colour since. Marina then led them down to the left where the students entered the Assembly Chamber. They were allowed to be seated, mimicking a genuine meeting. A mock debate was held, about whether the voting age should be lowered to 16. There were striking points on each side, where the importance of having your own decision was mentioned in relation to mental health. Next on the agenda was a tour of the Shankill area by a former loyalist paramilitary, Noel Large. The students were able to sign the peace wall and hear from a first-hand account of the violence and life during the Troubles in East Belfast. Large described a little part of his own life in the Shankill area, and what it was like to grow up there in the sixties. Students were able to see first hand the murals of Shankill, with Large telling the stories behind them. The tour finished up in a remembrance garden, where Large briefly explained the lack of pubs in the area due to the fear and danger of the earlier decades. Before the outbreak of violence, there were sixty-six pubs occupying the Shankill area. Today, there is just

six. There was a short break where students were allowed to roam around the heart of Belfast city. Then they met with their last guide of the day, Peadar Whelan, a Republican. The students got to see the area on the other side of the Peace Wall they had visited that morning. Exploring the Falls area with Whelan’s point of view was an interesting experience, as he was a primary source like Noel Large. Key murals such as the Bobby Sands mural were shown and students were able to inspect them up close. The students learned about the bonfires that would be held and how the Hunger Strikers lost their lives. Like the tour in Shankill, this tour ended in a remembrance garden. The trip was an outstanding success, with students being able to experience first hand what life had been like during the turbulent times of the Troubles. To see the impacts of the violence in person is much more powerful than reading it in a book. This will be a tremendous help for their exams as Northern Ireland features heavily on the Leaving Cert course. A big thanks to Ms. O’Moore and Ms. Lindsay for organising the marvellous trip.

The team performed very well and were unlucky to have a couple mishaps with some boats on the first day, which resulted in two races not being completed for two of the students, Adam Barker and Darragh Brett. The team finished in a respectful 9th place, narrowly behind Malahide Community College in 8th and Belvedere in 7th. Colourful Chicken Curry Forget the chill with warming Curry. As the weather starts to turn chillier, eating foods with spices can help to warm us up from the inside out! Curries are a great dish for cooking in a batch and leaving it to simmer to develop the flavours of the spices. Curry also freezes quite well, providing a flavoursome, nourishing and warming meal for those busy days that you may not have much time to spend in the kitchen. There are so many variations on curry. My recipe is really colourful, tasty, healthy and lean with all the different vegetables.

Colourful chicken curry Makes 4 portions Ingredients • 16

3-4 (550g) Chicken fillets, chopped into pieces

1 large spanish onion, cut into chunks 3 Garlic cloves, crushed/chopped finely 1 Red pepper, cut into chunks 1 Yellow pepper, cut into chunks 2 whole Fresh red chillis, diced 100g Spinach leaves 200g Natural flavour greek yogurt 1 tin chopped tomatoes 4 tablespoons curry powder 400mls water

Method 1. Prepare and wash the vegetables. Place aside. 2. Prepare and chop the chicken. 3. Heat a non stick pan on a medium heat. If not using a non-stick pan then heat 4 teaspoons of oil in a high sided pan. 4. Add the onion, garlic and fresh chilies and cook on a medium-high

heat. 5. Add the chicken and curry powder. Allow the chicken to cook thoroughly and absorb the flavours from the curry powder. 6.Add the peppers, tin of chopped tomatoes and 400mls hot water. Stir to mix. 7. Simmer for 1 hour until the liquid reduces. In the mean time the condiment such as rice could be cooked as per instructions on the product label. 9.Finally, stir in the spinach leaves and yogurt. Serve and enjoy. Style Warrior Fashion and Entertainment Show took place on Saturday 6 th October in Wrights Venue Swords in aid of NECRET Cancer Research and was a huge success. After a year of promoting and producing it I can sit back and say, “ Done that ! seen that ! wore the T-Shirt until I get the need to do it all over again. I am so thankful to everybody who helped create this wonderful success. Here are a collection of photos of the wonderful wmadness on stage. Mattress Mick almost took flight like Mary Poppins and the crowd loved him. The entertainment was amazing and we had such a colourful collection from our shops and designers. We opened the show with Project Fashion Kids who were truly amazing. Then B-Fly dance crew blew us away with their super cool moves. We had Emily Nayhree with her Dirty Dublin Collection just after Professor Bryan Hennessy gave a few minutes talk about his work in both hospital and NECRET his charity. The shops on board were Change Lingerie Galway, Vila Pavilions , AB Formal Wear for Men in Swords, CoCo Belle Boutique Donabate ,Sensation Clothing Swords and Louis Copeland Capel St. Our other super designers included Ksenina Design and Style , Golden Stitch , Summer Mist, One Off by Tatianna, Lady Grace , Jynx Knight and myself Carina Cunningham. Entertainment continued with Aeriana Grinder with her twisted Sisters Drag Queen act, 18

He is a born leader and loved by us all. The finale was my collection led by Madonna Vogue Cream ladies with fluttering fans, Followed by Phantom of the opera Vintage Collection, my Burlesque theme with bright orange and hot pink feathers and finally Bram Stokers Dracula. Drama right to the end. Super fun, Super People. A huge thank you to the make-up artists. The make-up crew, FX make-up Academy, Gillian Stapleton Mua, Daria Janiwska, and the lovely Bianca and staff. The hair crew - Veronika Byrne , Caroline Quigley-Ward, Virginia Vitkauskiene and Joanne Phelan. I would have been lost without their help. Thanks too to the production team, Anna Waters, Gordon Flynn, Noel Cunningham and on stage Noel Cunningham. A big thank you to Ray Quinn from Bathstore and More who donated €1000 to stage the production and to SK Biotek from Swords who gave a large donation to the charity plus the guys working there modelled on the night for AB Formal wear,

thanks also to the ladies from Sk Biotek who also modelled for Vila. Thanks also to Debbie Deboo – Photography, great fun was had by all. So thank you all for being a part of such a big production and I hope to meet you all again with fresh ideas and help raise more money for this deserving charity.. Lady Lana wins the crown at Style Warriors Show Lana Salome Kurasidze is a professional model living in Dublin. She is the only model I’m aware of who is wheelchair bound. Lana met us at one of our casting days trying out like all the other models wanting to be part of this show to help our charity NECRET Cancer Research. She showed us her portfolio of shoots to date and we were so impressed with her we just wanted her on board. In 2006 Lana was diagnosed with a fatal brain Tumor ( Gilobastoma Multiforme Grade 4). Her doctors were predicting her survival as only up to three months and guessing after that. However she is still here thank god and keeps busy working out in the gym six days a week and is even taking boxing classes. She has fantastic inner strength and has made her own You tube video showing how she exercises while using her wheelchair. Her aim is to be a positive example and inspire people to continue to be the person they are and not let their illness consume them. We had planned putting Lana on to a throne in the fashion show but when we had her dressed in her wheelchair we realized this is the way for her to model and she did it with class. I have watched her You tube video –‘Lana - June 2017 training with Lana Salome Kurasidze ‘and it’s very clear she is a beautiful person both inside and out. We were privileged to have her on our show and I really hope in the future we can do something new together. Take a look at her pictures guys and girls and see this beautiful lady. St Pats recruiting following busy season The season is coming to an end for St Pats but as action on the pitches eases out, the social calendar picks up. Their Annual Pre-Christmas Social Night for members, mentors, players, sponsors & friends of St Pats takes place on Friday 01 December 20h00 at Beaverstown Golf Club. Their AGM - a members only event takes place Monday 03 December 20h00 at Donabate Golf Club. It’s been a busy year for the club with Easter Camp, Cul Camp & Skills Camps for boys & girls along with Mentor Coaching nights & courses organised through the year. Their annual Mini All Ireland hit record numbers and was a resounding success with 390 boys & girls across 36 teams. MAI Finals Day was made even more special by the visit of Uachtarán CLG John Horan who officially opened their new sandbased Pitch 2. An tUachtarán was joined by local Councillors, TD’s & Senators along with representatives from the neighbouring Sports Clubs to celebrate the Club’s special day. The club’s development plans now move to the new flood-lit Astro Training pitch which is due to be completed early next year. Donabate Parkrun celebrates its third anniversary Donabate Parkrun recently celebrated it’s third anniversary. Since the inaugural event in October 2015 over 3,000 people have completed over 20,000 runs, walks or jogs accumulating in excess of 100,000 Km’s in the process. Almost 500 people have volunteered at these events at Newbridge House. Donabate parkrun is a free, timed 5k event that takes place at 9:30am every Saturday morning.
