Editor’s Note

July is the month when photos move outdoors and Fingal offers many chances to make memories - beaches, parks, festivals and more. It is also the time when photos are ruined by what brought us out to play in the first place - the sunshine. Here’s a few easy tips to get better results this Summer. It seems counter-intuitive but a bright sunny day is often a terrible time to get photos of family and friends. Not only do the conditions force your loved ones to squint into the lens, but the harsh light also creates dark, distracting shadows on their faces. Set your camera or phone to ‘auto-flash’ and check the results frequently. One advantage of bright sunshine is that it lets you take action shots quickly and, hopefully, will freeze the scene in perfect detail. Get in as close as you can - the more you zoom in the more you will experience camera shake. When you are taking photos of your children get down to their level! It works a dream. Remember, digital photography is free so make full use of your ‘Burst’ photo opton - it’s always great to have a choice. And, just because you are snapping away, don’t forgot to make sure you have some protection from the sunshine - there’s nothing quite like sunburn to ruin your day!

Donabate/Portrane gets ready for Summer Festival

Summer is rolling around again and with it the third annual Donabate/Portrane Summer Festival. This year the festival runs from Thursday to Sunday, August 10-13, and aims to provide fun and entertainment for all the family. Thursday evening sees the second Citizen of the Year Award in the Waterside House Hotel. The idea is to give the people of the community a chance to highlight unsung heros; people who do a lot of work quietly behind the scenes and who make a big difference to the quality of other people’s lives. The response last year was fantastic, and the first winner Mary Lynders was indeed a popular and worthy choice! The winner receives a trophy to keep, and a cheque for €500 ( kindly sponsored by SuperValu ) to be donated to a charity of their choice. On Friday, August 11, Donabate Library will be hosting a childrens’ event, details available in the library. In the afternoon Billy Bubbles Magic and Punch and Judy Show will be in the Marquee on Portrane green. As the funfair will be opening that afternoon as well there promises to be a whole load of fun for the children. Friday night will see the marquee rock with Derek and the 80’s Band. So dig out some retro threads, ‘big-up’ the hair and have a ball! Saturday is shaping up to be a very busy day, kicking off with the ever popular Teddy Bears Picnic in the walled garden in Newbridge House. Come and meet Happy Henry and Beatrice the bears, and Granny Womble won’t want to miss 4

the party either as there’s going to be so much going on. Along with a yummy picnic box (kindly sponsored by Lady Betty Cobbe Cafe ) you can have your face artistically painted, listen to storytelling with Granny Dot, watch a variety show with a stilt walker and juggler, and go and visit all the animals on the farm. Dinny Collins is going to be on hand with some fun family fitness as well. Saturday afternoon it’s all happening on Portrane beach with Swim Ireland. They will be running a series of open water swim races from the beach between 2pmand4pm. There will be races for all ages and the road at Seaview should provide a grandstand view of the event. For further information please contact Kinny at 0862888503, and for those interested in taking part contact Olive at 0871428589 Donabate/Portrane Community Centre will be the place to be for the teenagers in the evening where they will be entertained by local bands and enjoy a BBQ. Saturday night sees the action stay in the marquee with Marvin and the Grooves who will keep you dancing all night with a selection of music from the 50’s thru to the 90’s -whatever you want they have it covered! Sunday is the big ‘fun for all the family’ day on Portrane green from 12md to 6pm. There’s so much happening this year it’s hard to know where to start. There is the funfair of course which will be running all weekend with carousels, a huge

bouncy area, a bouncy area for the younger ones and games for the older ones. And for the brave ones the Terminator ride will strive to terrify! Corvenio Circus are bringing the future this year with the Robots - there is Atomic the 8 ft robot, Nano the friendly one, and Cyber Cop and the Cadets to keep law and order. They’re also bringing Cuddles the bear, a stiltwalker, face painter and loads more. Wooly Wards petting farm is coming again so you can meet lots of lovely animals. The Crazy Golf will be back so you can take on (beat!) Mum or Dad with your skill at the game. As always there will be sports competitions and Orla Finn will be there to do fun family fitness. Olive from Secrets of the Seashore will be helping you to create some beautiful sand sculptures as well as telling you some amazing secrets of the seashore. The marquee will be jampacked with wonderful things at the food and craft fair. And of course no family fun day would be complete without Bingo! Sunday night is the time to put on the Stetsons and stilettos at the Country & Western hoedown with the ever popular Stage Two. There will be prizes for the best dressed cowboy and cowgirl so get those hats and boots dusted off ! There will be a short break at 10pm for the fabulous Fireworks Grand Finale; this is a show not to be missed. Portrane to Donabate to Deputy Mayor! Portrane man, Cllr. Adrian Henchy, now living in Donabate, has been elected Deputy Mayor of Fingal this evening following my nomination by Fianna Fáil colleagues and support from Fine Gael, Labour and Independent Councillors. “I have nothing but praise for Mayor Darragh Butler who brought incredible energy and dynamism to the role ably assisted at all times by Deputy Mayor Eithne Loftus,” said Cllr. Henchy. “And congratulations to our new Mayor Mary McCamley who I have no doubt will do a fantastic job and I am immensely proud to be Mary’s Deputy for the next 12 months. Summer is a lovely time of the year to take environmental portraits of friends, family and children. You don’t need to go abroad to get a wonderful summery backdrop for your subject. The Donabate/Portrane peninsula has plenty of great locations such as the beaches, fields, woodland and the park that are perfect for photo shoots.

My top tips: • Take some test shots of the landscape in which you want to place your subject. This is the time to make decisions on how you want the background to appear in the photograph e.g. blurred vs detailed and to adjust your camera accordingly. • Look out for the available light and use as much natural light as possible for your subject, which will protect the natural look of the image. Sometimes, it is necessary to add light by using fill-in flash or a reflector. It will all depend on what the available light is like and the look you are going for. • Decide on the final composition and position your subject in the right spot. Don’t forget to engage the person you are photographing in a conversation, while you are working out the lighting and composition. • Don’t be afraid to take your time and continue the conversation to create a relaxed atmosphere and give advice to improve posture and try different poses. • Put yourself and the subject in a good position and good things will happen!

The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival 2017

What has“The Mission”, “The Godfather”, “Schindler’s List”, “Pirates of the Caribbean” and The Bleeding Pig Festival got in common……..” Come to The Gala Concert in St. Patrick’s RC Church on Friday 8th September and hear The Young Dublin Symphonia perform music from these films. This is the Young Dublin Symphonia’s second time to perform at The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival. Young Dublin Symphonia is a youth string orchestra under the directorship of Bjarke Gundersen and based in Malahide. It

draws members from across the North County. The YDS has travelled to Italy, Denmark and Norway, among other countries, to perform. We welcome back uilleann piper, flautist and composer Eamonn Galldubh. Eamonn has toured and recorded with artists including Clannad, Riverdance, Moya Brennan, Cara Dillon, Damien Dempsey, Celtic Woman, Hazel O Connor, Druid Theatre and the RTE Concert Orchestra. This accomplished and versatile musician will play jigs and reels on the uilleann pipes and a classical

piece “Allemande from “Partita” in A minor by JS Bach on the flute. “This Day” composed by Bob Chilcott and uniting five different poems, will be performed by The Lambay Singers with choral director George Rice. This is powerfully evocative music embracing a range of moods and styles.

Local News The exuberant and enthusiastic Skerries Strummers – a ukulele group - have a lively and fresh selection of songs and tunes. Male soloist – local man David Scott baritone, accompanied by Caitriona Grimes – was the featured soloist in RTE’s Lyric FM’s “WB Yeats: Words for Music Perhaps”. His many opera roles include Figaro from “The Barber of Seville”, Guglielmo in “Cosi Fan Tutte” and he has performed with The RTE National Symphony Orchestra and the Wexford Festival Orchestra. One of David’s songs in the Gala Concert is Britten’s arrangement of Yeats’ “Salley Gardens” Local resident, Catalin Lazurca, tenor, has sung Nessun Dorma in The National Concert Hall with choir and orchestra. He was soloist in Puccini’s Messa di Gloria with the Lassus Scholars and Piccolo Lasso in their concert in Westminster Cathedral. Catalin’s selection includes works by Haydn and by Boito. The Skerries Sea Sharps, with Musical Director, Caroline Cutliffe, are making their first appearance in Donabate. Their varied selection of songs will include “The Parting Glass” an arrangement by Thomas Juneau and “Adiemus” by Karl Jenkins. The Gala Concert is open to everyone. It is free to attend and has an outstanding line up. No need to book.

It’s all about your Heart!

Heart disease is very much a fact and a fear among many families and it was his own experiences that drove Portrane’s Maurice Buckley to organise the Jim Buckley Memorial Walk during Happy Heart Week recently. Maurice’s brother, Jim, 50 died suddenly 17 years ago because of heart disease. More recently Jim’s daughter was also diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. In 2105 Maurice was in hospital because of back problems - luckily for him it was the right place to be when he began to experience his own heart trouble. As a result he is now the possessor of a pacemaker/defibrillator. The Jim Buckley 5km walk/run was organised with the Parkrun in Newbridge House and with sponsorship and donation raised a whopping €2,800 for the Irish Heart Foundation. The money was later presented to Catherine Doyle of Irish Heart (formerly Irish Heart Foundation).

Located on the stunning grounds of Donabate Golf Club, members of Donabate Portrane Tennis Club are making the most of the long summer evenings! The first ‘Burgers on the Balcony’ event started with a tennis tournament and continued back at the clubhouse with food and music from local talent and tennis member, Killer Ceol! Well done to both Ladies and Men’s teams on making into the semi-final of the Dublin Summer League! Our ladies team are the top of the league table in their class with 300 games won!! DPTC recently had a bag packing fundraiser event at Supervalu in Donabate. Well done to everyone who helped out at the weekend. The generosity and support of the Donabate Portrane community is just wonderful! Thank You! On Sunday June 11th DPTC held an Open Day which was a great success. It was an opportunity for anyone to come down to the courts to try out tennis, chat to the coaches, watch exhibition matches and to enjoy strawberries and cream! Method Ingredients • 2 mangos (frozen chopped without skin) • 2 bananas (frozen chopped without skin) • 4 tablespoons vanilla strained/greek style yogurt (Tip: The strained/greek style yogurt has a thick, creamy consistency and is also high in protein) 12

There are many variations for the below recipe but I have kept it nice and simple. It is mega refreshing, smooth, creamy and provides a nice dose of vitamin C, potassium and calcium which in addition to Vitamin D from the sun will help to keep bones and teeth strong and healthy. Tip: Mangos are relatively cheap at the moment. Make sure they are soft as it will make them easier to cut and blitz up! Method to mangoliciousness! 1. Blitz the frozen mango and banana in a powerful blender for a few minutes until it starts to become smooth. 2. Add in the vanilla yogurt spoon by spoon, mixing gently in between and until you achieve a nice soft scoop consistency. 3. Gobble it up or freeze it for later....if you can resist!
