When politics and religion are too incendiary, and gossip can rebound on you, there is always the weather to discuss. And, where weather is concerned, we generally have a pessimistic view! “Yes, it has been a nice couple of days, but it can’t last, there’s a cold/rainy spell on the horizon - I feel it in my bones.” June, in fairness, is a month of change - officially it is Summer but the month is not quite Spring, not quite Summer, long evenings but not as long as they will be in July and August, warm but with a hint of heat to come. It’s the time of year to get off a little early from work, see if the barbeque has survived the Winter, get the kids out of the house (without any electronic playthings), limit TV watching and generally get the garden up to scratch. And, when the weekend comes around, this is the time of year when you will find plenty to do in Fingal. With parks and beaches galore every family can enjoy free fun at their own pace or veg out in the often vain attempt to get a suntan before sunburn :) And, when you are out, bring a camera, we are always looking for local Fingal photos - who knows, we might even print some of them (in December! to remind everyone that we actually did have a Summer).

Towns and Villages funding scheme The Department of Arts Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs has launched a new round of funding for 2017 under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme. The focus of the Scheme is to develop projects to enhance and develop towns and villages socially, economically and culturally. Last year seven communities across Fingal shared €380,000 in grants from the scheme which has seen its funding increase from €10 million to €12m for 2017 with a similar amount anticipated for 2018. The scheme will be administered in two separate phases and over a two year period. Phase 1 will concentrate on projects to enhance and develop towns and villages socially, economically and culturally while Phase 2, which will be launched in the second half of 2017, will be a pilot to encourage residential occupancy. Fingal County Council is now seeking expressions of interest from community and business interests in the towns and villages in Fingal for projects for development as part of the Scheme. The Council’s Director of Economic Enterprise, Ed Hearne, hopes communities in the County will submit expressions of interests by the deadline of May 29, 2017. “This is an excellent opportunity for communities throughout Fingal to obtain funding to deliver projects which make our towns and villages vibrant places to live, work and do business in. Last year seven communities received grants ranging from €29,000 to €100,000 which was further supplemented by funding from Fingal County Council and enabled a wide variety of community projects to be completed,” said Mr Hearne. The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, said: “There is great pride throughout Fingal in where we live and the Town and Village Renewal Scheme is an opportunity to further improve our communities.” Expressions of Interest Applications and all the explanatory documents on the Scheme are now available at www.fingal.ie

In line with the previous scheme there are two categories of towns and villages; Category 1 being those towns and villages with a population of less than 5,000 and Category 2 being those towns with a population of greater than 5,001 and less than 10,000. The Census data for either 2011 or 2016 can be used. 60% of funding being made available will be for the category 1 towns. All applications under Phase 1 of the Scheme must be submitted to Fingal County Council by May 29 and the selection process will be a competitive one with the final decision being made by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. Full involvement with community and business interests will be an essential feature of successful projects. The explanatory document includes a detailed list of the types of activities that can be supported but it should be noted that up to 80 per cent of the total project cost will be provided for any individual project with the minimum grant available being €20,000 and the maximum grant of €100,000. A higher maximum of €200,000 will be considered for a limited number of projects where a robust case demonstrating exceptionally strong economic benefit to the town can be made. The scheme also now provides for optional funding for public art works up to €20,000 which enhance public spaces as part of one or more proposals submitted in respect of their area. All projects will be required to commence in 2017 and will be expected to incur a reasonable proportion of expenditure by mid-November and this should be a consideration in the project selection process.

St Pats Donabate - CUL CAMP
Now that the end of the Primary School year is in sight, attention turns again to St Pats GAA Cúl Camp which is on this year in Ballymastone from 10 - 14 July. The Pats Cúl Camp caters for boys & girls aged 5 - 13. It covers football and hurling along with a number of other fun activities in an action-packed and fun filled week during the summer holidays. The mornings are spent on skills & fun activities while each day ends with some games & matches in a blitz. It revolves around maximising enjoyment and sustaining involvement in Gaelic Games. Portrane Woman is Midwife of the Year
At age 41 most people have settled into their lives and give little or no thought to changing career mid-stream. Not so Portrane woman Jeannine Walsh Webster who was working until then at St. Ita’s Hospital. Following a hip replacement she decided to go to college to train as a midwife. After four years she qualified in 2011 and has worked in the Rotunda ever since. During that time she was involved in forming the Irish Widwives Association. Her special interest lies in the area of maternal mental health and, last December, she was invited to attend a perinatal mental health awareness event in the House of Commons. Earlier this year she was nominated for two prestigious UK awards - Midwife of the year and Maternity innovator of the year. At the end of April Jeannine travelled to Ayr in Scotland to attend a Midwifery conference and the award ceremony. To her astonishment she was awarded ‘Midwife of the Year’. “I have had a lovely response since my award, and I’m very grateful to all who nominated me especially the women in my care.” 8

St. Pat’s Tour de Fingal slips into high gear as start line nears
You may have noticed an increase in cyclists around Donabate & Portrane in training for St. Pat’s Tour de Fingal. The fair weather has certainly helped their cause and excitement is starting to build ahead of the start on at 9am on June, 17. The cycle will begin and end at Ballymastone Club House, Donabate. The route covers Donabate, Turvey, Blake’s Cross, Man O War, Balscadden, Gormanston, Stamullen, Bellewstown, Duleek, Balrothery, Lusk, Man O War, Blake’s Cross, Turvey and then back to Donabate. With two different course options, the cycle caters for many levels. There will be a coffee stop on the 90km route at Sage & Stone in Duleek and a water stop on the 50km route in Naul village. After the cycle is completed, there’ll be an Apres Tour Burger & Beer with fun activities for the kids. The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival 2017
The fourth annual Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival will take place on the Donabate Portrane peninsula from Monday to Sunday, September 4-10. The Bleeding Pig gets its name from a rock formation on the cliff walk between Portrane and Donabate. The programme for this year’s Festival includes many events catering to all tastes and ages. The Festival opens on the evening of Monday, September 4, with a three-day Short Film Festival taking place in Keelings, Donabate. Emma Fagan, who has been involved in the Fingal Film Festival and the Dingle Film Festival, will act as curator and is sourcing Irish and International Films. The Waterside Hotel will be buzzing on Thursday 7th. September with a mighty session “Sing-a-Song or Singalong” - with members of Smyths Crew, The Tower Singing Circle, The NoName Band and local ukulele players. 12

The Young Dublin Symphonia, under the directorship of Bjarke Gundersen, returns to St. Patrick’s RC Church, Donabate for the Gala Concert on Friday, September 8. Saturday, September 9, promises to have something of interest for everyone! The Exploration Dome, a pop up planetarium, will be open all day for shows on the stars and planets. The Dome, which is 8 metres long, 8 metres wide and 4 metres high, will be set up in Educate Together’s School Hall. Workshops for children with Puca Puppets, Kids on the Go Fitness, Singing with Ali. Local artist, Robert Shaw, returns with his very popular painting workshop. The Donabate/Portrane peninsula has an abundance of young talent. There will be an opportunity to experience this at “Mol an Óige” (Praise the Young) - a concert showcasing the incredibly talented young people of the peninsula. This takes place in Donabate/Portrane Community Centre in the afternoon. An exhibition of dancing through the ages begins with Renaissance music by the Bevertones with local dancers giving an exhibition of Renaissance dances. The Blanchardstown Brass Band with Musical Director Zdenek Ondrousek continues the musical journey with Viennese waltzes, foxtrot, quickstep, paso doble with members of the Viva School of Dance. The City Gents - a Big Band sound - with the Viva School of Dance entertain with jive, swing, tango, cha cha. Local band Recall playing music of the 60s and 70s invites the audience to dance. Sunday, September 10, starts with Summer Miscellany in St. Patrick’s Church of Ireland, Donabate, with stories, poems music and song. Local crafters, artists, photographers, artisan bakers exhibit their work in the Parish Hall. Portrane Green is the assembly point for a
Walk and Talk with local historian, Peadar Bates. Stella’s Tower and it’s connection to Jonathan Swift’s Stella will be the subject of a talk by Eamonn Grogan, guide in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and then The Brook will host a performance of part of the play “The Fiddler and the Dean” by Donabate/Portrane Dramatic Society - a conversation between Swift and Handel. This will be followed by a session of song and music by members of The Tower Singing Circle. The day continues with a Samba Drumming workshop and performance by the participants. The hugely popular “Open Mic” in Smyths is not to be missed - entertainment at its best by local performers. This Festival is accessible to everyone. Entrance to all events is free. The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival links in with Fingal Arts Department’s Resort Revelations. They have a very exciting programme that will run in Portrane during the festival. Donabate Portrane Tennis Club recently opened four new tennis courts at Donabate Golf Club. The Mayor of Fingal Cllr. Darragh Butler cut the ribbon and declared the tennis courts officially open! The fun and sense of celebration of the day was captured perfectly when the Mayor had a go on the courts himself, playing against the juniors with an oversized tennis racket! “One of the newest clubs in the country, the Club has achieved so much in such a short space of time and with 380 members the Club continues
to grow and grow. I would like to congratulate Chairman, Robbie Harrold, all of the Committee members and all other members of the Club for this incredible achievement,” said cllr. Butler. “The addition of this new Tennis Club combined with the magnificent Donabate Golf Club Clubhouse is a really great achievement and another plus for the peninsula. I would also like to praise Donabate Golf Club and their President, Pat McNeill for supporting this initiative to create this combined sporting facility.”

Celebrations continued back at the clubhouse with a wine and cheese reception, prize giving, sponsorship raffles all followed by a buffet from the clubhouse restaurant, along with music and dancing ‘til late! Speeches given by Robbie Harrold (Chairman), Mayor of Fingal, Richard Fahey (CEO Tennis Ireland), and Pat McNeill (Donabate Golf Club President). Councillor Adrian Henchy, Donabate, stated that the official opening was the culmination of a great vision. “With over 380 members and growing, Donabate Portrane Tennis Club has literally hit the ground running and such is the growth the club are in for further capital sports funding to build 2 more Courts bringing the club to 6 top class courts,” he said.

“Buried in Fingal” Website Launch Fingal County Council has launched a new free online database of all its burial records, indexed and fully searchable. The Council has responsibility for 33 burial grounds, and has records of burials dating back to 1905. Apart from the burial records of over 65,000 people interred in Fingal between 1905 and 2005, the database also contains information about the history of each graveyard, maps and drawings, photographs and location information, notes of notable burials and extracts from interesting epitaphs. The database is accessible via the website of Fingal County Council (www.fingal.ie), on the Burial Grounds page, or by simply
