Hello and welcome to the second edition of Donabate & Portrane Local Magazine.. We really hope you enjoy it! We hope to bring you news each month from your local clubs, schools, committees and societies, to keep you up to date on what’s happening locally. March is traditionally considered as the month to celebrate being Irish across the world. Perhaps surprisingly St. Patrick’s Day only became a national holiday here in 1903 - and to prevent too much enjoyment of the day all pubs were ordered to remain closed! It was not until 1931 that the first ‘official’ St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held in Dublin. While St. Patrick would be surprised and amazed at many of the changes in Ireland since his time, he would recognise something that has never changed - community spirit. Without it our lives would be much poorer, we would be more isolated both from neighbours and from the wider community, and many of the little things we take for granted would be noticeable by their absence - a good example being Tidy Towns. We are here to help you spread the news about your community events big and small, and if we have not heard from you yet please get in touch and tell us your news so we can spread your good stories to all of the community. Thanks to all the businesses who supported us in our first edition, and we ask all our new readers to please support them too. Let’s work together to make it better!

Pride of Place Competition

Fingal County Council is looking for communities and projects in the county interested in taking part in the 2017 IPB Pride of Place Competition.

centred projects, cultural projects and urban neighbourhoods and housing estates will feature. Local authorities can enter up to five categories each year.

Pride of Place is an All-Ireland competition which showcases the best in community achievement. It is organised by Co-operation Ireland and is open to every local Authority north and south to nominate groups to represent their county.

Fingal County Council has been involved in Pride of Place for over ten years and in that time over 30 communities and projects have done Fingal proud by taking part in the Competition. There have been nine outright winners, runners-up and special category prizes over those years. Among the communities to have picked up awards in Pride of Place since 2004 are Skerries, Malahide, Ballyboughal, Donabate, Parslickstown House, Draiocht Arts Centre and Mulhuddart.

In 2016 Fingal was represented by the Mulhuddart Motocross Project, Skerries Age Friendly town and the communities of Donabate & Portrane. At the finals, held in Belfast in November, the Mulhuddart Motocross Club was given a special award in recognition of the community endeavour involved. In addition the community of Donabate/ Portrane was runner-up in the Population category for areas with over 5,000 people. The 2017 Competition will again have population categories for communities ranging in size from 300 up to larger areas of over 5,000 persons. In addition, specialist categories covering, youth-

Baby Talk!

Baby sign language is a series of simple gestures, or signs, that parents and their little one use together to quickly and easily convey meaning. The signs are used before a baby can even talk, so it helps reduce the frustration associated with him not being understood. Most babies don’t begin to speak until well into their second or even third year and this can lead to frustration and tantrums. However, a baby who expects to be understood - and can be understood using sign language - is calmer in any situation. Imagine your baby could tell you he wanted his teddy, or more milk, or that he saw a plane! It is a lot of fun for both babies and their parents. Baby sign language is very simple. Babies will have the gross motor skills from around six or seven months to make signs. Using ISL, Irish Sign Language, parents and their babies learn the signs for people, objects and emotions they will use every day. Parents are encouraged to start with just one or two signs and to use them consistently and in context. For example, every time you go for a drive you say the word ‘car’ as you sign it. “Does baby want to go out in the car?”, “You like the car, don’t you?”, “What a lovely red car!”. You are repeating the word and the sign, and baby quickly understands what the sign means. Then, after a while, he will be able to sign back. Language follows movement and signing helps activate all the parts of the brain that are used in language acquisition. You are making it easier for babies to remember words and sounds by adding a kinesthetic and visual element to the aural and oral side of language. Babies naturally begin to gesture between 6 and 10 months old. For example, they point at an object of interest; 8

they raise their hands when they want to be picked up; they wave hello and goodbye; and they nod and shake their heads. Teaching a baby to sign is simply extending their existing gestural vocabulary. Baby sign language is most suitable for infants between the ages of 3 and 23 months old. They will begin to understand meaning at around 3 months old, and will begin to meaningfully communicate at around 6 months. Around this time the fine motor coordination necessary for signing develops too. Signing will take babies through those sometimes difficult first couple of years when they long to explore and communicate with the world, but are often scuppered by the inability to express themselves. As they begin to talk the signing drops away but, as outlined below, the benefits are long term. It has been shown that signing can be of great benefit to preschoolers and in the early school years too, helping develop early literacy and numeracy. Marilyn Daniels, a professor of speech communication indicates: “Sign language can be used to improve hearing children’s English vocabulary, reading ability, spelling proficiency, self esteem and comfort with expressing emotions.” There are many advantages to using sign language with your baby. Here are just a few: Firstly it reduces the incidents of tantrums arising from frustration. Signing also encourages your baby to talk - you speak as you sign - and research shows that babies who sign tend to talk earlier than their non-signing counterparts. It also creates a strong parent/child bond. When you spend time signing with your baby, you spend quality time speaking with them, making

eye contact and, often, singing and saying rhymes. These fun activities for baby are crucial to their early development and will help their vocabulary, self-expression and confidence by providing them with a responsive and nurturing environment. Research has shown that babies who learn to sign have a greater vocabulary at school-going age and a higher IQ at the age of eight. Signing is great for emotional development too. When a baby can sign he is hot, cold, tired, calm, excited, hungry, sick, sad, happy etc. he is developing an awareness of his emotions, and a vocabulary with which to express them. Teaching your baby to sign is fantastic for fine motor coordination - thus giving your little computer programmer/engineer/footballer/ dancer/artist a head start in developing these crucial skills. In order to do all those clever things when your baby is older, she needs first to develop her hand to eye coordination and her spatial reasoning. Signing is a simple way to have your baby practice these skills every day from an early age. Much as we adore our little darlings, those early days of being a parent can be draining. It seems like a continuous cycle of eat, poo, sleep...eat, poo, sleep... repeat. Why not break the monotony by communicating, and really connecting, with your baby before she can even speak? Imagine going to your 9 month old baby in the morning to pick her up out of the cot, only to see her sign ‘Mammy’ or ‘Daddy’. Now, if that doesn’t start your day with a smile, nothing will.

WHAT IS CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)? WHAT IS CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)? And how can this therapeutic approach help in dealing with depression and anxiety? Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a therapeutic approach used in the treatment of depression, anxiety, phobias and many other mental health conditions. This approach is largely based on simple mind training. We have all got individual styles of thinking i.e. negative, positive, black and white (polarised), all-or-nothing, catastrophic, overgeneralisation or fearful to name but a few. In many cases, our style of thinking is unhelpful and can cause depression, anxiety and other dysfunctional conditions. The aim of CBT is to challenge the client’s way of thinking from 3 perspectives:1. Logical – are the thoughts making sense. 2. Empirical - is there any reality attached to the thoughts 3. Pragmatic – are the thoughts helpful in everyday life. CBT is a goal oriented therapy with strategies to teach the client to control the thoughts and behaviours that are causing distress and to change these thoughts and behaviours to more helpful ways of dealing with everyday issues. Therapy would typically last from six weekly sessions upwards depending on the severity of the issues being dealt with. From session to session interspersed with homework, clients would practice new ways of thinking and behaving that would serve them better in creating a healthier and happier state of mind. Donabate Locals are Flocking in for tennis! Donabate Portrane Tennis Club Men’s team which was recently victorious over Portmarnock.

Donabate Portrane Tennis Club, opened just over six months ago, has already attracted 300 members. With four allweather, floodlit courts open every day from 8am-10pm, there are tennis activities available for all ages and abilities. Whether you are a novice or an experienced player, there is something to suit everyone. The club offer social and competitive tennis, for adults and juniors and there are also coaching programmes for all levels. For junior members the club offers camps during the school holidays and recently held a two-day Mid Term Camp. The tennis club is located on the grounds of Donabate Golf Club and members have full use of the clubhouse facilities. Members recently enjoyed a special “Valentines Dinner’ at the Clubhouse restaurant. Other News….The Winter league is in full swing. Well done to the Men’s Team on their 2-1 victory over Portmarnock recently. And to the Ladies Team who battled hard but failed to overcome Sutton. Not at all easy in the wintry conditions! Danger of Palm Oil Fatbergs on Fingal Coastline Fingal County Council has issued a warning for people to be vigilant for ‘Palm Oil Fatbergs’ which may be washed up along the coast as they can be particularly dangerous to dogs. A number were found recently at Hoare’s Rock, Skerries, and results from laboratory tests have showed that the substance was Palm Oil. It is believed that the Palm Oil was part of a consignment which came off a ship in the English Channel about 18 months ago. The congealed substance has been turning up sporadically on beaches and coasts in England but this is the first time it has been recorded in Fingal. A Fingal County Council spokesperson said: “We believe the discovery of this material in Skerries on Sunday is an isolated incident as we have not had any other sightings along the Fingal coastline. The material is a solid white substance which is known as a ‘Palm Oil Fatberg’ and they can range in size from being as small as a golf ball to as big as a boulder. We are asking the public to be vigilant as this substance can be harmful to dogs.”

Everyone is included at Portrane Athletic

For local football club, Portrane Athletic, inclusivity and respect for all members is their first consideration. Success on the sporting field is also a high priority but, as club Chairman Scott Finegan insists, it must never come at the expense of always doing the right thing by members young and old. “We welcome everyone who has an interest in football and we are mindful that everyone has different abilities. Of course it’s a competitive sport and we love winning trophies as much as anyone. But Portrane’s ethos is to ensure we do all we can help every one our players become the best footballers they can be. And if we win trophies by doing that, then it’s a bonus rather than primary goal,” he says. This year, with the strong backing of the FAI, the rapidly growing local club - which has enjoyed significant success at under age levels in recent years - has taken this approach to sport to the next level. “As people are becoming aware of the priorities we have, more and more parents are getting involved. Word spreads and one particular group of parents asked us if we could do more to make football more accessible to children who might otherwise struggle to participate in any sports, particularly on an inclusive basis within the traditional club structure,” Scott Finegan says. The mums and dad’s doing the asking were involved with the 21 Tigers group. Set up by a local parent, it comprises up to 16 children aged between four and seven-years-old. The Portrane Athletic Management Committee was unanimous in agreeing to do everything they could to help these youngsters fulfil their football ambition and granted the Tigers honorary membership of the club. Scott and his fellow coaches John, Ross and Dave have set a programme in six week blocks designed to develop the fundamental skills of participants. The Donabate Educate Together school very kindly offered the use of their hall from 4-5pm every Saturday and now parents bring their children from all over Dublin to play football under the Portrane Athletic banner. The training sessions are very much carried out within Portrane’s existing structures and Club Secretary Ger Duke said this approach was vital. “For 14

us, it’s not enough for these young footballers to just get a helping hand from our coaches. They should be fully welcomed into our club, wearing our badge on their training top and being treated exactly the same as every other under age team we have. “It doesn’t matter that they are from different parts of Dublin. As far as we are concerned Portrane Athletic can now be their football club and their goal is the same as every other player we have - play football, enjoy their sport and reach their full potential within a team setting,” Ger added. The Tigers were recently invited by Chris McElliott, football for all development officer and manger of the Irish amputee team, to visit FAI headquarters at Abbottstown. There, they watched a game and afterwards players and parents got to meet Ireland legends Damien Duff and Robbie Keane. Portrane Athletic FC has a wide range of schoolboy teams at all age levels, a schoolgirl squad, two over 35 teams and a senior squad. Fingal County Council Announce 2017 Artists’ Support Scheme for professional Fingal Artists Fingal County Council has announced the 2017 Artists’ Support Scheme. The funding allows professional artists to avail of an award towards travel/professional development opportunities, a residency, or towards the development of work. The objective of the Artists’ Support Scheme is to support individual professional artists from Fingal to develop their artistic practice. The purpose of the award is to provide artists with the time and resources to think, research, reflect and engage with their artistic practice. The award is open to practising artists at all stages in their professional careers working in music, visual art, drama, literature & dance. To be eligible to apply, applicants must: have been born, have studied, or currently reside in the Fingal administrative area. Speaking about the award, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council Paul Reid said “I am pleased to announce this funding scheme, which assists artists to develop their professional careers. The Council awarded 29 artists through this scheme last year and continues to nurture artistic excellence in Fingal.” The funding is for projects/initiatives which will take place between 1 June - 31 December 2017. RECIPE 1: Grilled prawns with rocket, roasted red pepper & walnut salad Ingredients

This recipe allows a Starter for 4 people. 20 medium whole Mediterranean prawns peeled and deveined. 80g butter 3 cloves of garlic chopped 1 medium shallot chopped 2 pinches of dried chilli 1 pinch of salt 1 glass of white wine 1 tbs of chopped parsley

RECIPE 2: Pancóga Próitéin!!!!! Comhábhair -3 uibheacha -300ml báinne próitéin -200g coirce -2 spúnóig bhoird síolta chia -30g púdar próitéin

Heat a large pan with a tbs of extra virgin olive oil place the prawns in it cook for one minute and turn them add shallots garlic and chilli cook for one minute more add the wine bring it to boiling point and finish with the butter and parsley. For the garnish 1 large roasted red pepper sliced 200g baby rocket 2 tbs of chopped walnuts Mix all the ingredients and dress them with 3 tsp of extra virgin olive oil and 1 tsp of balsamic vinegar a pinch of salt and enjoy.

NOTICE: Mulville supports emergency motions on Portrane erosion Independent councillor Paul Mulville has given his full support to emergency motions from Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil councillors concerning coastal erosion at the Burrow, Portrane, which has acutely worsened recently. He has called on the Council to take action and provide immediate emergency measures in the interim, extend the existing boulders put in place at Seaview and strengthen and extend the existing old sea wall.

“There is serious concern and fear amongst local residents and traders in Portrane regarding the threat facing homes and business by the rapid coastal erosion, and as I have said before, our own house is amongst the ones at risk. This is an area of environmental protection, but as part of this the council is supposed to be protecting the dune habitat, not letting it be washed away,” Cllr. Mulville said.
