Fingal remembers -2018-2023 – Can you help? 1916 Commemoration

Fingal County Council is developing a Commemorations Programme for the period 2018-2023, when there will be many aspects of our past which need to be remembered and commemorated. These may form part of the Decade of Centenaries in which we will remember significant historical events that took

place between 1918 and 1923, or may relate to other aspects of Fingal’s history and heritage. The Council is now embarking on a consultation process so that the people of Fingal can have their say on what we should remember and commemorate. This process will also encourage a discussion on how such

commemorations can develop a deeper and more lasting engagement with our past. We are looking for your input in suggesting events, persons and themes we should remember between 2018 and 2023. This public consultation process will run until Monday 15th January 2018 and your input is vital for its success. The Fingal Commemoration Programme 2018-2023 aims to: • Reflect the results of the public consultation process now being undertaken by the Council. • Set out the events, persons and themes which Fingal County Council will prioritise for commemoration during the period 2018-2023 • Outline ideas for, and methods of, remembering and commemoration which groups across Fingal may wish to apply to their own commemorative aims during this period. • Detail the supports the Council aims to provide to local groups and organisations wishing to develop a commemorative event or endeavour during the period 2018-2023. The Council also encourages ideas and suggestions for commemoration from outside the Irish experience reflecting the fact that Fingal is one of the most diverse counties in Ireland with residents from many different countries.

Budgeting Smarter for the new year How to be in better control of your money As a new year commences in Donabate and Portrane, many people consider how they can do some things better than they did last year. 1700 students from 34 Fingal schools ran the final mile of a marathon in Morton Stadium as part of the MarathonKids Programme being implemented by Fingal County Council on Thursday, December 1. The fifth and sixth class students ran a total of 25.2 miles during group training sessions over an eight week period. To complete the

marathon distance, they ran a full mile at Morton Stadium together. On reaching the finish line, the runners were congratulated and presented with a medal by International Olympic Athlete, David Gillick. Also waiting at the finish line to present the runners with their medals were Fingal County

Council Chief Executive, Paul Reid, and Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Mary McCamley The MarathonKids programme was first implemented across Fingal three years ago and was the first of its kind in Ireland. This year saw South Dublin County Council implement the programme across their schools too.

Butler wants free wifi across Fingal in 2018

At a recent meeting of Fingal County Council, Cllr Butler asked about the possibility of free public wifi being rolled out in 2018 across Fingal. In reply the Council said it is currently developing a plan for the rollout of free public Wifi across the towns and villages in Fingal. They said it is planned to commence this rollout in 2018. The rollout of public WiFi will take place in conjunction with the implementation of the National Broadband Plan. Minister launches Distributor Road

Minister Murphy, the Mayor and CEO with members of the Donabate-Portrane Liasion Committee.

The Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Eoghan Murphy, TD, launched the Donabate Distributor Road on December 13 which is the first LIHAF project under the Rebuilding Ireland programme to reach the construction stage. The Minister, along with the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Mary McCamley, and Fingal County Council Chief Executive, Paul Reid, turned the first sod on the 4km road which will run in an easterly direction from the R126 Hearse Road on the south-west of Donabate village, across the DublinBelfast railway line, before heading in a northerly direction to reconnect with the R126 on Portrane Road. To be built at a cost of €14.5m, the Donabate Distributor Road is scheduled to take 18 months to complete and will create a much-needed alternative road crossing of the railway line with the construction of a new bridge as well 14

as creating better access to Donabate and Portrane and alleviating traffic congestion in the village. The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Mary McCamley, said: “Around 3,600 new homes are envisaged within the Donabate Local Area Plan and the new Distributor Road will make a lot of that possible, including 1,000 mixed tenure homes on Councilowned land. The new road will also ease traffic congestion in Donabate village and make access to Portrane, Balcarrick and Corbalis much easier.” The Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, said “The Distributor Road is a key strategic aim of the Donabate Local Area Plan which provides for the future sustainable growth of the town through the implementation of three phases of development across land parcels located to the north, south, east and west of the existing town centre.”

Mulville welcomes Donabate Distributor Road Paul Mulville, Social Democrats councillor for the Swords local electoral area, has welcolmed commencement of construction on the Donabate Distributor Road. Speaking after the sod was turned on the road, Cllr. Mulville said: “I welcome the commencement of construction on the Donabate Distributor Road. This road has been on the plans for a great many years, and the people of Donabate and Portrane will be glad to see construction finally commence. I have been pursuing this matter since elected, and look forward to seeing the road completed and opened within the next 18 months. In a recent reply to a council question I put down on the distributor road, council management confirmed that: ‘the appointed contractor will be required, as part of the works requirements, to submit for approval to the Council a comprehensive traffic management strategy detailing how they intent to carry out the works. Cllr Mulville added “It is also vital that work begins urgently towards planning Phase 2 of the distributor road which involved widening and improving the section of the Hearse Road from Phase 1 underway now as far as the motorway, a matter which I raised at the recent council budget meeting.”

Henchy gives guarded welcome to new Distributor Road Local Councillor and Deputy Mayor Adrian Henchy has given a guarded welcome to the new road. Speaking after the launch , he said: “ I want to very much welcome todays official launch of the new Donabate Distributor Road with construction due to commence by the end of this year with a 18 month timeline of this road. I want to especially recognise and pay tribute to the staff of Fingal County Council Planning and Strategic Infrastructure Department especially the roads planning section who have been working on this project over many years However, I also want to highlight the communities of Donabate Portrane very real concern at the significant ramping up of development in recent months on the peninsula and the impact this is having on people’s day to day lives in the community. It will not be acceptable for anyone to think that the new distributor road is the solution to all of Donabate Portrane’s traffic problems, it is a major part of the solution but we also need to see improved roads, footpaths, new cycle lanes alongside traffic safety and management schemes. We also need to see as a matter of urgency the road widening scheme between the Maxol Garage and Railway Bridge prioritised. Finally, I have no doubt this critical piece of infrastructure will allow the villages of Donabate and Portrane breathe and get its unique village appeal back again following years of traffic congestion on the Peninsula.” Contact us: communitylocals@gmail.com

St Pats minors win league in thriller

St Pats ended their year on a high note with their Minor Lads winning the League Final 1-11 to 1-10 against a quality Fingal Ravens side. There wasn’t much to separate the teams all game and the tight score reflects a tight match. In fact it seemed as if the game would be heading into extra time when they scored the winner in injury time. The level of football played and the amount of supporters there on a bitterly cold wet Sunday morning bodes well for these young men and the club in general. At the younger end of the Club, the Academy has finished for the Christmas break. They were delighted to have a special visitor to cheer them on for the final Saturday. Santa was very impressed with all the Donabate Portrane boys & girls and how well they’re listening to their coaches. He also had a special word of thanks to the Club’s Cinnires who are working towards collecting their Gaisce Awards by helping out at the Academy. The Club is extremely lucky to have so many teenage volunteer Cinnires who work at the Academy, Cul Camps, Easter Camps & Mini All Ireland. It’s a well known facet of the GAA & LGFA to give back to your Club; it’s truly taken to heart in St Pats where they are very fortunate to have such a great spirit in the Club. Pecan Pie-licious Breakfast Muffins Ingredients

• 120g Oats • 130g Milled flaxseed/linseed (See mixes with seeds/fruit in most supermarkets) • 120g Mixed nuts • 2 Eggs • 2 Bananas • 150g Plain yogurt • 30g Honey • 2 teaspoons Cinnamon • 100g Raisins • 50g Dates, finely chopped • 100g pecans, chopped

Method “Many of you will have heard the phrase or indeed have used it yourself ‘New year new you’. This often comes down to our health and in order to make these ‘new’ changes last we need to make them habit. One healthy habit is having breakfast and kick starting your metabolism and energy levels for the day. 1 in 3 of us in Ireland skip breakfast and on average it takes just 9 minutes to make a healthy breakfast. A quick solution could be to pre-make a batch of these super easy muffins below so that you can bring them with you on the journey and have them on the go Pre-heat oven to 180’c. Method: 1. Mash the bananas and mix with the 2 cracked eggs in a bowl. 2. Blitz the oats in a blender and add to the egg and banana. 3. Blitz the mixed nuts in a blender and add to the mixture. 4. Add the cinnamon, flaxseed, honey and yogurt to the mixture and mix well together. 5. Finally add the raisins, chopped dates and pecans. 6. Scoop the mixture into muffin cases on a tray and pop into the oven at 160’c for 30minutes. 7.Store in an airtight container for up to 6 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Change it up for variety and substitute 100g of other nuts/seeds or dried fruits to suit your tastes and preferences!!!
