Making the Most of the start of Autumn

There is something special about early September in Fingal. The evenings are beginning to draw in, the first hints of autumn are appearing, and families across the county are quietly counting down to the return of school. However, before the uniforms are ironed and the schoolbags are packed, there is still time to make more memories! Some of the most memorable family moments can be found close to home — a walk along the coast, an afternoon in one of Fingal’s parks, a visit to the beach, or a spontaneous stop for an ice cream. These are the ordinary moments that children remember, especially when they involve time with parents, grandparents, friends and neighbours. Local clubs and groups start preparing for another busy year, sports teams return to training, community events bring people together, and the familiar rhythm of school and work gradually resumes. It is a reminder that Fingal is not simply a

place where we live; it is a collection of communities built on people looking out for one another. For parents, these final weeks can feel like a race against the clock. There are books to buy, schedules to organise and routines to restore. But perhaps we should resist the temptation to rush towards September. There is still time for a late evening walk, a picnic, a cycle, a family game or simply sitting together and enjoying a sunny spell when it arrives. Autumn will come soon enough, bringing crisp mornings, changing colours and a new beginning for thousands of Fingal children. Until then, let’s make the most of what remains of summer. Put the phone away. Call a friend. Bring the family outside. Say yes to one more adventure. School will start soon. For now, there is still time to make a few more memories.

Busy August for Men’s Shed

August was a busy month for Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed, as our regular weekly activities resumed after the July break, with croquet in Newbridge Park on Tuesdays and our Thursday morning exercise classes and get-togethers over a cuppa. Our plots at Turvey Allotments were a hive of activity where the daily watering and weeding is being rewarded with a bumper harvest. In keeping with the motto of the Donabate Portrane Summer Festival - “a festival for the community by the community” - the Men’s Shed music group, Gerry and the Plonkers, provided entertainment on Portrane Green on the Saturday afternoon of the festival. By all reports, the Plonkers played their part in making it a great weekend enjoyed by all. The Plonkers 4

celebrated their third anniversary by playing at the annual Turvey Allotments barbecue. The Plonkers also played a slot at Vintage Picnic, a free, age-friendly music festival for adults over 55, which this year was held in Millennium Park in Blanchardstown. On a more serious note, last month we had a very informative presentation by a community nurse, arranged through the Marie Keating Foundation, about men’s health issues, including awareness of prostate, testicular, lung, bowel and skin cancer. Over the next months, we hope to have a few outings to places of special interest in addition to our regular weekly activities. Have You Set Up Your ICE File Yet? By Dave Kavanagh For many years, I have recommended to clients the importance of setting up an “ICE” file (In Case of Emergency). Preferably in either a metal filing cabinet or any container that is fire-resistant (some have even used a strong biscuit tin but only after the biscuits are gone!) Then, make sure at least one (preferably two) trusted friends or family members are aware of where it is kept in the home. This way, in the unexpected event of either a fatality, a severe illness or even early onset dementia, it removes the confusion of trying to establish details, such as, what bank account are there, what cover (if any) is in place and is there a will made? I’ve often heard of situations where a surviving partner says “oh, he/she always dealt with all of that, I haven’t got a clue”. So what kind of things should be kept in it? Consider the kind of information that would be needed at such a time. Details of bank accounts, any loans due to be paid, details of any mortgage and associated cover in place that could clear such a loan. Any life cover details (and any contact names and numbers in connection with them). Details of any regular payments that should be cancelled, such as gym membership, magazine subscriptions, etc. The benefit of having cover plans and wills in place is diluted somewhat if nobody knows that they exist or where the details

are. With all of this in mind, something that is well worth researching, is an Enduring Power of Attorney. While this was formerly associated with someone having reduced mental capacity and therefore needing someone to make decisions on their behalf, the Assisted Decision Making (Capacity) Act 2015, brings a more modern approach to having someone assist in certain decisions. Community welcomes new Parish Priest to Donabate

As a community we are absolutely delighted to welcome Fr John Bracken as our new Parish Priest! Fr John, who comes from Beaumont, was ordained in 1996 and has recently been Parish Priest in Churchtown. He was both surprised and honoured to be appointed by Archbishop Dermot Farrell to serve in the growing parish of Donabate, Portrane and Balheary. Fr John recently shared his thoughts on his predecessor, the late Fr Pat Reilly, and spoke about the heartfelt words shared on rip.ie and on social media following the sudden passing of such a beloved pastor. He mentioned how, in Fr Pat’s humble way and under his gentle guidance, the parish was growing into a welcoming and faith-filled community, all the while practising servant leadership, active in social justice. Fr John looks forward to working with our Parish Pastoral Council and within our local Early Saints of Ireland Partnership of Parishes of

Swords, River Valley, Brackenstown and Donabate, in developing further our mission of Building Hope. He also looks forward to working with the Parish Finance Committee, who advise and assist the parish priest in matters of finance, compliance, fundraising and maintaining our church buildings and parish hall, and working too in the Parish Office - the welcoming face of the parish - where Bernie also supports our many volunteers in their varied ministries. Fr John said, “I am so thankful for the warm welcome I have received as I start to make this lovely parish my home. I hope everyone who comes to worship in our faith communities of Donabate, Portrane and Balheary feels the same welcome. The first six months of this year have been exceptionally busy, with 620 representations submitted to Fingal County Council on behalf of constituents across the electoral area. This

volume reflects both the scale of growth in our communities and the increasing pressure on essential public services. A substantial proportion of these representations relate to core local infrastructure issues — deteriorating road and footpath surfaces, missing or faded road markings, pothole repairs, road safety concerns, requests for traffic calming measures, pedestrian crossing provision, coastal erosion risks, planning enforcement matters, and the need for wider upgrades across our public realm. These issues are not isolated; they are symptomatic of infrastructure struggling to keep pace with population growth. In addition to Council matters, I have made numerous representations to national and regional bodies including the NTA, Irish Rail, Go Ahead, Dublin Bus, HSE, Gardaí, Uisce Éireann, EIR, Government Departments and other State agencies. The largest number of representations received relate to: • Public transport reliability and inadequate service levels • Garda resourcing and community safety • School and crèche provision • Water network capacity and ongoing supply issues

As a Peace Commissioner, I continue to support residents with witnessing signatures, verifying statutory declarations and assisting with official documentation. This is a free service available to all constituents. Donabate is experiencing significant and sustained population growth. However, the delivery of essential infrastructure ( transport, education, water services, community facilities and Garda resources) is not keeping pace with this rapid expansion. This mismatch is placing increasing pressure on families and communities who rightly expect timely, reliable and well planned public services. Cinema Club launches Autumn/Winter programme The Lambay Cinema Club was formed to give local residents a chance to see a wide range of movies from around the world that otherwise would be difficult to track down. To kick off our Autumn/Winter season we once again return to our home at St Patrick’s Church of Ireland Church in The Square, Donabate, with a film that really demonstrates our commitment to showing films that entertain while giving us a glimpse into other worlds. Our season opener is DJ Ahmet, a Sundance festival award winner that introduces us to Ahmet, a fifteen-yearold teenager from a remote Yuruk North Macedonian farming village who becomes “the first celebrity from the village” after a video of him chasing his escaped sheep through an illegal rave goes viral on TikTok. Life is difficult on the farm with Ahmet’s family struggling after the death of his mother. His younger brother, Naim, hasn’t spoken since her death and his grieving, strict father regularly takes him to local healers to try and get him to speak. Meanwhile, Ahmet copes by daydreaming during class until his father removes him from school so he can work

on the farm full time. He also worships his teenage neighbour, Aya. She is considered to be worldly wise as she lived in Germany for a while before having to return for her arranged marriage to an older man she hates the sight of. Ahmet uses music as a form of escape and shows his affection for Aya by rigging up his tractor to play music so she and her friends can practice their dancing. Critics have described the film as “totally charming”, “delightfully humorous”, “hugely lively”, “charming and optimistic” and “laugh-out-loud.” DJ Ahmet will be shown at St Patrick’s Church of Ireland church in The Square, Donabate (K36 Y521) on Thursday Sept 17th at 8pm. Christopher Nolan has always been a director who loves grand scales and mind-bending ideas, but his latest epic, The Odyssey, might be his most ambitious project yet. This three-hour spectacle takes Homer’s ancient Greek poem and transforms it into a gritty, stunningly beautiful story about the heavy cost of war. Shot entirely on massive IMAX 70mm cameras, it demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible. The movie follows Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, a battle-weary king trying to sail home to his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland) after the fall of Troy. While the classic mythical obstacles are all there including a terrifying Cyclops and enchanting Sirens Nolan does something different. He focuses deeply on the psychological toll of the journey. Odysseus isn’t a flawless hero here; he is a man haunted by the violence of his past, whose own pride and guilt keep delaying his homecoming. Matt Damon delivers a career-defining performance. He sheds his usual charming, friendly movie-star persona to play a grizzled, deeply exhausted leader crushed by the weight of his actions. The star-studded supporting cast is equally excellent. Anne Hathaway plays Penelope with a quiet, fierce grace as she defends her home from greedy suitors, while Tom Holland captures the emotional ache of a son growing up without a father. Zendaya also makes a memorable impression as the goddess Athena, acting as Odysseus’s watchful protector. Visually, the film is an absolute masterpiece. Keeping with his signature style, Nolan relies heavily on practical effects rather than computer graphics (CGI). This choice makes the stormy seas and ancient landscapes feel incredibly real, rough, and dangerous. The vast, breathless shots captured by cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema are perfectly paired with Ludwig Göransson’s pounding, intense musical score, keeping the audience glued to their seats. If there is a flaw, it is that the movie’s pacing occasionally slows down during the middle chapters of the sea voyage. However, the emotional payoff and the thrilling final act more than make up for it. Ultimately, The Odyssey is a powerful, thought-provoking blockbuster. It shows us that surviving a war is only half the battle—the hardest part is truly finding your way back to who you used to be. In all truth I’d recommend checking out ‘The Odyssey’ and see what you think of it, I shall give it a score of Four ½ stars. You can watch it at your local cinema today. Recovery is for Everyone

For many people, the word recovery is still associated with something private – something that happens behind closed doors, or only after a person has reached a point of crisis. We are trying to change that conversation. The message from RIFE Fingal is that recovery should be visible, celebrated and supported by the whole community. Whether someone is recovering from addiction, trauma, mental health difficulties or simply rebuilding their life after a difficult period, they should be able to feel that they belong within their community rather than outside of it. With a sense of true belonging, there can be lasting wellness for individuals, families and communities. This September, RIFE Fingal is promoting that message into the heart of Fingal through two community events: Rivervalley Recovery parkrun – Saturday, 5 September 2026 A morning centred on movement, connection,

wellness and recovery, bringing people together to walk/run at Rivervalley in a positive and welcoming community setting. RIFE Fingal Holistic Family Festival – Sunday, 27 September 2026 A larger celebration of recovery, wellbeing, family and community, with the aim of creating a space where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together and experience what a recovery-supportive community can look and feel like. These are not simply events that we want people to attend. They are part of something bigger that we are trying to build. We want Fingal to become a place where recovery is spoken about openly, where people seeking a better life are encouraged rather than judged, and where families and communities can participate in recovery alongside individuals. Together we can make recovery possible for everyone.

That is why local media is important to us. A photograph, a short article, an interview, an events listing or a journalist simply coming along and experiencing the atmosphere can help carry this message far beyond the people we are already reaching. We would therefore be delighted if you would consider covering either – or hopefully both – of our September events. I would also be very happy to speak with you personally about RIFE Fingal, why this work matters to us, what we have experienced within the community so far, and where we hope this movement can go in the future. We are learning, building relationships and bringing people together. But there is real energy behind what is happening, and I believe there is a genuinely positive local story developing here. Our message for the people of Fingal is: Recovery is for everyone – and community can be part of the recovery journey.

CAR REVIEW FIAT Grande Panda Electric is Sustainably Stylish By Declan Glynn

The new Fiat Grande Panda marks the triumphant return of one of Europe’s most beloved nameplates, and it is reimagined for the electric age. Blending nostalgic design cues with modern EV technology, Fiat’s latest allrounder aims to redefine urban mobility with its distinctive personality, practicality, charm and surprising affordability. The Grande Panda’s boxy, upright silhouette is reminiscent of the original Fiat Panda from the 1980s, and it provides the car with a confident, road-ready presence. Its squared-off, rugged design is enhanced by distinctive LED Pixel headlights, 3D vertical taillights, a 3D “Panda” signature on the doors, the FIAT name embossed onto the tailgate, sturdy roof rails, and a sporty rear spoiler – some of which are trim-dependent. The Grande Panda’s relatively compact footprint makes it super-easy to navigate along crowded city streets, while manoeuvring in and out of parking spaces can be done with the greatest of ease. Compared to the original Fiat Panda, the new iteration is 611mm longer, 557mm wider, and 131mm taller – providing justification for the

name ‘Grande Panda’. Recycled materials used throughout the cabin include striking bamboo-trimmed dashboard panels that add warmth and character. The dashboard features a rectangular element with rounded sides, and the oval theme is repeated throughout the cabin. The digital cockpit pairs a 10” driver information display with a 10.25” infotainment touchscreen, delivering a modern, connected feel, while physical controls have been retained for key functions. Despite measuring just under 4 metres in length, front and rear passengers benefit from surprisingly generous legroom, while the high roofline means headroom is rarely an issue, even for taller occupants. The Grande Panda Electric has a boot capacity of 361-litres, expanding to 1,315-litres with the rear seats folded down. The Grande Panda Electric is available in three trim levels: Pop, Icon and La Prima. It is built on the Stellantis Group’s Smart Car platform and it benefits from extensive development investment, prioritising real-world usability and efficiency. The lithium-ion phosphate battery provides a range

of up to 320km on a WLTP combined driving cycle. Uniquely, the Grande Panda features an integrated retractable charging cable (Icon and La Prima trim), which is neatly stowed behind the FIAT logo on the front fascia. With a 100kW DC charging capacity, the car can complete a 10% to 80% charge in approximately 32 minutes. My Grande Panda Electric ‘Icon’ review car was finished in distinctive Limone Yellow metallic paint. The 44kWh battery sends power to a frontmounted electric motor which produces 113bhp and 120Nm of instant torque. The power on offer is brisk enough for confident urban acceleration and comfortable motorway merging too. The supple suspension absorbs road imperfections with ease, and the general feeling within the car is one of calm serenity. The car features a mild-to-moderate regenerative braking system that recovers energy upon deceleration, and it transitions seamlessly into the mechanical brakes without a grabby or unexpected pedal response. The hugely-impressive Fiat Grande Panda Electric is priced from just €22,995 (including EV subsidies).
