Lets pull together and ensure a happy Christmas Oh dear, once again we have gone into severe lockdown in a bid to surpress this pandemic which has been plaguing our country and the world for the last10 months. Once again our movement is restricted. We have to stay at home instead of going to work except for certain exceptions and we are subject to nearly all the restrictions we had earlier this year. So,what can we do to make sure a new day dawns for us all soon. Well two simple things spring to mind. Firstly lets all pull together like we did at the start of the year and secondly lets all obey the Government rules and flatten the curve again. We should also all shop locally and ensure local jobs. Maybe this is the sharp shock we all needed to remind us about the dangers of not wearing face coverings, not regularly washing our hands thoroughly and not keeping our distance when meeting others.Community transfer of the virusseems to be the problem so lets not go back to meeting numbers of people. Simply put, we all want this to decrease again as soon as possible. We all want to reduce the number of people in hospital and worse, so lets all pull together now as we did before and turn this around quickly, get back to as near normal a society as possible and stay safe and enjoy the Christmas season. We all have mothers, fathers, children, spouses, partners and family we love and do not want to see ill or die, so please, please lets all pull together, protect ourselves, protect our loved ones and our neighbours and give each other the best Christmas present ever by flattening the curve again. That way we can have as near a normal Christmas once again. So please, obey the rules, stay safe, lets pull together and keep supporting our HSE workers, our local shopping outlets and most of all each other. The Locals team. Leithinis Donabate Portrane back on Zoom Leithinis Donabate Portrane CCE’s traditional Irish music classes are back up and running via Zoom. We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new and returning members. We now have 50 students taking lessons in Tin Whistle, Banjo, Accordion, Fiddle and Bodhran.Our Annual General Meeting was held on the 21st October. We have a number of exciting ideas for the development and extension of our branch. Please check our website www. leithinis@comhaltas.com for updates. On Friday the 20th November we will be running a slow session via zoom as part of Fingal County Council Inclusion week. The session will be lead by our teachers, Eamonn, Rory and Sinead. We have received a grant from the Council and along with the funds raised from the Tradathon and bag pack in March we were able to purchase some of the Instruments our musicians will be playing on the night. We would like to thank again the local Donabate Portrane Community and Fingal County Council for their support over the last 18 months. How can you get 66% instant growth on your money? By Dave Kavanagh A hugely important topic is planning for retirement. Unless you want to try and live on a mediocre state pension for what is likely to be over a third of your adult life, it would be wise to make your own plans and plan early. Obviously, the longer you contribute to a pension, the more you will have when you retire. One of the most attractive aspects is the tax relief on contributions at your marginal rate. This means that for anyone on the 40% tax rate, every €100 you contribute is only costing you €60. Another way of looking at that is that your €60 has grown by just over 66% to €100 the moment you have put it in! The other tax incentives, are that pension funds are invested in a tax-free environment and you can also take a tax-free lump sum at retirement stage. If you’re fortunate enough to already be in a company pension scheme or a superannuation, that is great (although depending on your length of service, you may want to supplement your fund by paying AVCs (additional voluntary contributions)). The people that administer your pension scheme should be able to provide you with information about that. If you have your own limited company, you can set up your own scheme and allow the company to pay for all or some of

the contributions. For everybody else, You can set up a personal pension or a PRSA (personal retirement savings account) and still get the tax relief. Self employed - One option that many self-employed people avail of, is to pay an annual amount into a pension in order to reduce their tax bill. Usually, they would have up to 31st October in the current year in order reduce their 2019 tax bill, but due to Covid-19, for those filing and paying online to Revenue, they will have more time to do this. Donabate Portrane Men’s Shed continues to be limited to tending our allotment, the perfect smallgroup, sociallydistanced, outdoor activity for these pandemic times. Our second-hand, 25-yearold garden shed has been reassembled and lovingly restored with a coat of eye-catching Moroccan Red paint. The last of the season’s crop, cabbages and beetroots, have been harvested. Preparations have been made for the winter; the beds have been manured and covered. We now intend experimenting with growing garlic, onions and possibly other plants in the greenhouse over the winter months.

GoRedForDyslexia in November by Siobhan O’Neill White Did you know that 1 in 10 children in Ireland are Dyslexic? In the past, Dyslexic children were often shunned and ignored in school, as they were not considered to be clever. But the reality is, Dyslexic children are clever, creative and smart. Our daughter is Dyslexic and struggles with reading and spelling but also happens to be intelligent and observant with a vivid imagination. Thankfully schools are much better at supporting Dyslexic children nowadays. Our daughter gets additional learning support and can use technology, such as her scanning pen, in school too. The scanning pen (reader pen) is a tech pen which help her understand words and their meanings. When she comes across a word she does not understand, she scrolls the scanning pen across the word and the pen reads the word aloud to her. The pen also has a dictionary function, to give her a definition of the word if she needs that. The pen comes from Scanningpens.com and parents can get a 14 day trial for free by logging on to their website This month is Dyslexia

awareness month (#GoRedForDyslexia) and is a good opportunity to start conversations about Dyslexia. If you have worries about your child possibly being Dyslexic, contact The Dyslexia Association Of Ireland at Dyslexia. ie for advice and support. Also, speak with your child’s teacher and school principal about it. They can help arrange testing.We first started to worry about our daughter possibly being Dyslexic when she was around 6 years old and was struggling with homework. She had difficulty reading small, simple words and would often jumble them up. She really struggled with the word ‘was’, always reading it as ‘saw’. The school offered reading support and then, when this was not enough, they agreed to have her tested for Dyslexia. It was helpful to get the confirmation of Dyslexia because we knew what to do to help her and the school was fully supportive too. Please speak out and ask for the help and support you need because it will really help your child and that will make school a better experience for them. Active Age Zoom Meeting Active Age for All and Donabate Community Centre are starting Christmas early!Both are working together to do a project for Inclusion Week. The plan is for a hand-crafted Christmas tree that will be displayed in the Community Centre and will have been made by representatives from some of the schools, societies, peninsula organizations and particularly any individuals who like to do handcraft. The tree will be made from squares produced from wool or fabric by those involved. Here are some guidelines for you to consider for your contributions.Finished squares should be 30 centimetres each side OR could be made up from 4 x 15 centimetre squares joined together to become a full size 30 centimetre square. These can be knitted, or crocheted or quilted.If you want to show off different types of stitch – feel free to do so!Any of the 40 shades of green can be used. Decorations or baubles can be made too – perhaps some of our younger generation can do this.Take a few

photos while you are making your squares or decorations so they can be displayed.Zoom together to meet while you are working on the project and to stay in touch. There will be an opportunity for anyone visiting the tree to make a donation to the Hospice. After Christmas, the plan is to have a team of people to put the squares together and to raffle off the quilts at the next fundraising time for the Hospice – before Easter.It looks like ZOOM is our only change of meeting together while we knit or crochet. We might need the younger generations in our households to teach us how to use it! It would be great if we could pull together on this project and make it a real success. Community Council against development of 1,000 apartments Donabate Community Council have said in a statement, “Plans by developers to build 1,000 apartments in the village of Donabate have been described by the area’s community council as a declaration of war on the residents. An application has been made directly to An Bord Pleanála by developers Cannon Kirk to build 1,368 housing units at the Corbillis East site in Donabate. This site goes from the rear of Smyth’s pub down to the ecologically sensitive Broadmeadow Estuary.The Strategic Housing Development application to the planning board describes the application as one that consists of 353 houses and 1,015 apartments, three childcare facilities and associated site works.A Strategic Housing

Development application is a means of fasttracking planning permission without the need to apply to the local authority.Aledo Limited, which is part of house builder group Cannon Kirk, has submitted the application.The lands concerned, which run down to the estuary, were controversially zoned for housing a decade and a half ago.According to recent media coverage, the application consists of 600 conventionalstyle apartments, and 352 duplex units.These duplexes are understood to be three-storey units with two dwellings in each.However, An Bord Pleanála on its website combines the apartments and duplexes and describes the application as consisting of “1,015 no. apartments”.Donabate Portrane Community Council said: “The plans

for so many apartments and duplexes are totally inappropriate given the village setting. “The application amounts to a declaration of war against the community.” Even 600 apartments, leaving aside the duplexes, is far too many for a village that continues to suffer from chronic infrastructural deficits.There is no garda station, a congested rail service (before the pandemic struck), inadequate retail options, few community facilities and a bypass that was built at half the capacity of the planning permission granted for it, the community council said. The application, if it succeeds, could mean an additional 3,000 people living in an area straining to cope with its existing population levels, the spokesperson said .

Ukulele United is a group of lose friends! Who come together to play Ukulele for events and to be inclusive! We are mainly belonging to Blanchardstown Ukulele Group BUGS & Skerries Strummers. Many of us live in Donabate but we have people who join us from eg: Italy sometimes! Last year, we went to Italy and played Ukulele for a week in the beautiful town of Salsomaggiore near Parma. We were well looked after by our Italian friends and Linda Campbell from this parish who is living in this town in Italy.We hope to do an event for FCC Inclusion Week On Wednesday 18th November, “Open Mic” or “Ukeathon”.We thank Sinead Wiley, Senior Community Officer FCC for her help & support.While we cannot include the whole world we will try! Home Cook Recipes

Niamh’s basic bread – a truly lovely loaf! With lockdown and Covid restrictions, baking has been on the rise and became a more regular occurrence,even in households who never baked before!! This recipe here is quite a basic bread but the resulting loaf is really lovely and the beautiful baking smells are so comforting especially on darker Winter days. For more fibre, use a strong wholemeal flour.

Ingredients: • • • • • •

500g strong flour (And a bit more for kneading) 1.5 teaspoons salt 2 tablespoons olive oil (Helps give the bread a nice colour!) 1x7g sachet active dry yeast 3 teaspoons sugar 300ml warm water (Not too hot or it will kill the yeast) Preheat a casserole or pyrex dish with a lid for 30minutes at 250’c (has to have a lid in order for the bread to rise in the oven) DONABATE LOCAL-NOVEMBER 2020

Method: 1. Mix dry yeast well into the flour in a large mixing bowl. 2. Add sugar, salt and olive oil. Then add the warm water. 3. Mix well until it combines together to form a dough. 4. Sprinkle some flour on a flat surface. Knead the dough for 10-15mins until the dough is less sticky, has a smoother surface and can stretch without tearing. If the dough is sticking to your hands, you could coat rub a small amount of olive oil all over your hands. 5. Roll the dough around to form into a ball. 6. Put a small amount of olive oil in a bowl and place the dough ball inside. Completely seal the top of this bowl with cling film. Leave to prove (set aside in a warm place) for 2-3hours until the dough has doubled in size. 7. Sprinkle some flour on a flat surface. Knock the air out of the dough by pressing it. Shape

again into a ball and leave for 1hour to do a final proof. 8. Score the top of the dough using a sharp knife. This helps the gases release 9. Place the dough in the preheated dish with the lid on for 20minutes at 250’c. 10. Remove the lid and allow bread to cook for a few more minutes in the oven until golden brown. 11. Place on a cooling rack/tray. Allow to completely cool before cutting. This can take up to 2hours.

Traditional crafter in Donabate

Local craftsman Stephen Hand has, as a carpenter, worked with all types of wood all his working life. Now retired he has turned, literally, his love of wood into an art form through wood turning.His knowledge and love of the material is evident in his workings of the various woods, as he says the timber itself tells him how it wants to be. And that

could be anything from an eggcup, a bowl, or a vase, right up to a rocking horse.Most of the wood is sourced locally on the peninsula ( local roadworks have provided a bounteous supply !) Then the timber has to be stored and dried, which can take several years before it is suitable for turning. Once turned to the desired article it then has to be sanded, oiled

and polished, sometimes several times over before being considered ready for sale. It’s fair to say that it’s been a rollercoaster of a season for GAA & LGFA in Pats. They’ve gone from no training, to no-contact training and from small groups back to whole squad training a number of times. It’s said that the five ‘S’s of sports training are: stamina, speed, strength, skill & spirit; but the greatest of these is spirit. Well that quote never fitted better. The Pats squads have proved their spirit over & over this year and the Club are extremely proud of their players and the resilience they’ve shown in this strangest of seasons.Special mention

must go to their Footballers who won the GAA Junior 3 All County Championship Final last month beating Clontarf 2-09 to 0-10. For the first time in the Club’s history, the game was streamed live with commentary by Austin Shields & Niall Collins. Many of the lads have played together since their Academy days and winning the Championship with your childhood friends is a feat that’s hard to beat. 5 of the team shared an even closer bond as Brian & Stephen Keegan, Jack & Aron Kinsella and Eric Hendrick are all cousins. They attacked the Final from the first whistle beating Ballymun 2-08 to 1-03. Currently flying high in League Cup table,

these girls have trained and thrived under the management of Aidan Coppinger & Adrian Brophy who have breathed new life into the LGFA ranks of the club.The club use the phrase #ProudToBePats in their social media and newsletters. Seeing the amount of work that goes into maintaining and future-proofing their grounds at Ballymastone and the achievements coming out of their Juvenile & Adult coaching & training, it’s not hard to share their pride in their players and their parish.
