What exactly is the definition of community? In an article in the American Journal of Community Psychology the term ‘community’ has been defined as ‘ A feeling that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group,’ We in this country are famous worldwide for our caring attitude and nature towards each other and to others and at no time is that more obvious than in summertime when a lot of our community/ voluntary and sporting organisations take part in lots of charity fundraising activities. These we at ‘Locals’ magazines not only promote but actively support. Based on our many years experiences in our communities we recognise that there are many therapeutic benefits to community activities not only in a monetary sense but in the sense of well being and belonging. Community is not only about residency of an area, village or town, but also about supporting each other whether thats caring for a neighbour or shopping locally as well as playing your part in the local charitable/ voluntary and sporting organisations. It is also about integrating in activities which not only benefit you and your family but those of your neighbours and friends as well. We as a community based magazine are committed to promoting all such activities and none more so than at this time of the year. At present we all are experiencing rising prices as internationally fuel prices rise and the war in Ukraine raises grain prices amongst other things. However one thing seems to be obvious which is that local service suppliers and retailers are not only striving to keep prices low and offer value for money as they did during the heyday of the pandemic but also are showing in a practical sense what it is to be a part of a community. As the phsychologists article also said we have - ‘ a shared faith that members’ needs will be met through commitment to be together.’ It is that commitment that strengthens and binds our residents across Fingal into the wonderful ‘community’ we have today. Please have a great July and keep supporting our local suppliers, retailers and charitable voluntary and sporting organisations.

Bremore Castle Market returns as a monthly fixture!

Bremore Castle Food & Craft Village returned as a monthly fixture, from Sunday May 1st when the gates opened from 11am until 4pm. Based on the grounds of the magnificent Bremore Castle at the heart of the Balbriggan community in North County Dublin. The market brings together local businesses & artists to showcase a variety of local produce, artisan food and handmade crafts in an open-air family and pet friendly environment. The market will be running on the first weekend of every month (subject to planning and permission), and dates will be posted well

in advance on all social media channels. With work nearing completion on Bremore Castle restoration, it is also an opportunity for the public to get a closer view of the incredible work that has been done on this amazing structure. Bremore Castle is a large tower house located in Balbriggan, County Dublin. Estimated to have been built in the 14th century, the Norman Barnewalls family held it from the time of construction till 1727, the year in which it was sold. However, the first mention of this castle or its location was in reference to William Rosel De

Brimor, who held land in England and Ireland at the end of the 13th century. Its deterioration began much before the sale, and by 1783, it was termed as “not many years ago inhabited” by Austin Cooper, a prominent antiquarian of that time. The Very Least That You Should Know By Dave Kavanagh During a consultation with new clients recently, I asked if they had serious illness cover in place. They said that they did. When I asked for the details, they were unsure so searched for their policy details. It turned out that they had PPI (Payment Protection Insurance) and misinterpreted the word “illness” somewhere in the description. They did not have serious illness cover. (The PPI “might” have paid out a few hundred euro towards their mortgage payment if the person covered was out of work due to illness or injury and only after a 2 month period and then stopped after 12 months, whereas serious illness cover can pay out a tax free lump sum on diagnosis of one of the conditions covered). It was yet another reminder that most people do not know the important details of plans that they pay regularly for. As people’s circumstances change, it’s important to be up to date with knowing what you are actually paying for. Here is the very least that you should know about any protection plans that you have in place: Life Cover: How much cover is there? When does it expire? Is it dual or joint? Does it have a conversion option? Is it level, increasing or decreasing? How much does it cost? Income Protection: What is the deferred period? (The length of time you have to be off

work due to illness or injury before payments commence). What level of cover do I have? Up to what age will payments continue if I could never return to work again? How much does it cost? Have I claimed my tax relief ? (I.P. premiums are tax deductible). Serious Illness Cover: A.K.A. Critical Illness Cover or Specified Illness Cover. What level of cover do I have? Is it stand alone or accelerated cover? Is it dual or joint? When does it expire? Do I have the option to extend cover without further medical evidence? New Arrivals and Departures at Guide Dogs Balbriggan We have some exciting new additions to the Balbriggan/North County Dublin branch! On Monday the 9th of May, Adele Halpin of Stamullen welcomed black Labrador, Voldee into her home as a puppy in training, where he will stay with Adele and her family for the next 12-14 months before he heads off to Cork HQ. Andy Green of Balbriggan also welcomed a new addition. Andy returned to Balbriggan with his new guide dog, golden Labrador, Ollie on Friday the 13th of May, after the retirement of his trusty Guide Dog Nico last year. Andy, along with Ollie and his wonderful choir Cór Fingal performed in Millfield Shopping Centre, outside Specsavers on the 28th May last. The recital was in part to celebrate the fact that Andy got a new Guide Dog and also because Specsavers has been in Balbriggan now for ten years. Did you know that thanks to Brian Brodigan and Paul Quinn of our local Specsavers, a tap to donate machine for the Irish Guide dogs has now gone into over 50 Specsavers across Ireland? If you want to support us, you can find one of our tap to donate machines, where you can donate a minimum of €3 to us in Specsavers, Millfield Shopping Centre, Balbriggan. Over 30 years since it was originally made, Martin Scorsese kicked off the ‘90s by making arguably his third masterpiece. I write about ‘Goodfellas’ following the sad passing of Ray Liotta who shone like a diamond in the movie, screened recently at the Lighthouse Cinema. Liotta’s impeccable performance as Henry Hill will forever be remembered as one of the great gangster performances in cinema history. ‘Goodfellas’, an adaptation of the book ‘Wiseguy’, written by Nicholas Pileggi, is a fast-paced crime drama about a gangster lifestyle we don’t ever see but only hear about. It is gripping from start to finish. Even the opening titles, moving fast from one side of the screen to the other, are dubbed with the sound of cars racing by, symbolising how relentless the gangster lifestyle truly is. ‘Goodfellas’ is so fast paced we see nine freeze frames throughout, highlighting important moments, and slowing the film down to give the audience a chance to catch its breath. Thelma Schoonmaker’s editing is utterly brilliant with match cuts used from scene to scene to keep the momentum going.We also see 204 tracking shots which are used to take us through entire buildings instead of shooting a scene in just one room. One example is the famous date scene where Henry takes Karen through the restaurant kitchen to skip the long queue outside. ‘Goodfellas’ is one of my favourite Scorsese movies. Even if you watch the opening ten minutes, you’ll end up watching the entire film. It flies by so fast, like life itself. Throughout we feel many different emotions, from the highs to the lows, and these characters are just people passing through life before it’s all over in an instant. I’ll give ‘Goodfellas’ a score of five stars. You can watch ‘Goodfellas’ on sky cinema or buy it at Tower Records €7.99. New Foróige Project Now Available for all Young People Aged 10–24

The HSE Foróige Youth Health Initiative, which is situated in the two centres of Castlemills Education Centre, Flemington and the old Balbriggan Health Centre, has just appointed four new youth workers Cillian, Mégan, Conall and Lorraine. The project is open to all young people aged 10 – 24 who are living in the Balbriggan area. It will work in partnership with HSE services, schools and the local community to ensure collaborative work takes place and will allow all young people access to good quality youth work. All youth work programs and activities for young people in Balbriggan will be based on Foróige’s proven programs which will lead to a more positive and healthy lifestyle. Another exciting element of the work will include the opening of a new technology hub that can be accessed by young people and can explore the likes of coding, graphic design, music and much more. “Foróige is very excited to be working with the HSE in delivery of this brand new project. All young people who want to be involved in youth work should be able to participate. The purpose of our work is to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their own development of society. are delighted to have it here in Balbriggan”, said Miriam Ryan, Area Manager, Foróige. The project is currently launching their summer programs which will run over July and August. Each week will be jampacked with an exciting array of activities and experiences for young people to choose from, including sports weeks, arts and crafts, day trips, forest based sessions, and access to the new cutting-edge technology hub. These summer programs are an excellent opportunity for young people to come and learn more about the new project and get a feel for the type of programs that will be available throughout the year. One of the goals for the new project is to run weekly clubs throughout the school year and is actively seeking volunteers. It’s never too late to improve your health

Ciaran Russell There are 6 months gone in 2022, already! I have 6 simple ways for you to get back on track with your health goals and make some progress toward achieving them by the end of this year. My advice here is to implement these over the course of July and not all at once. If you try to go all-in at the start of the month, you may get overwhelmed and give up, leaving you back at the start again.First, start keeping a food diary. Not with the aim of reducing what you’re eating straight away but to create awareness of what food and how much of it you are consuming. Include everything you eat and drink. end of the first week take some time to read it. Next, increase your water intake. Being hydrated is very important for many bodily functions and will improve your energy levels. Get a water bottle and keep it beside you all the time. Aim for 1 litre of water for every 25kg that you weigh.Then start to walk more. You don’t have to hits 10,000 steps a day but gradually increase your step count from where it is now.Next, start taking a look at your sleep. Aim for at least 7 hours per night. And if you want 7 hours you’ll probably have to give yourself an 8-hour window to get it. Once you’ve implemented these 4 habits, then you can start to look at exercise and protein. Find some sort of exercise you enjoy doing and do it 2-4 times per

week. Whether it’s going to the gym, playing a sport or something else. Do something you find challenging and gets your heart rate up. Protein is generally not eaten enough by most people. Things like greek yoghurt, eggs, lean meat, beans & lentils and fish. If you are over 60, 1.2 grams per kg of body weight would suffice. However, if you are younger and are exercising regularly, especially in the gym you should aim for between 1.6g - 2.2g of protein per kg of bodyweight. My daughters were playing in the sea last year when my youngest stepped in a hole in the sand, and the seawater immediately came up to her neck. We got her out quickly, but it was a stark reminder that the sea is dangerous and unpredictable, so please be careful.On rainy days, there’s lots to do at home. Origami sounds tricky but is quite easy. Our son spent hours doing Origami with his late Nanna, creating treasured memories. You can pick up child friendlyOrigami kits from The Works Stores Ilac SC. Another fun indoor activity is collecting and paintingstones or seashells. It takes hours for the kids to wash, dry and paint the stones/shells and all you need is child friendly paint and lots of newspaper underneath!Decorating their bedroom is a fun project for children. Rogerstown Estuary: what’s the big deal?

by Tom McCloughlin, DCU Water Institute. For those of us living in east Fingal, there is an issue with transport. We live near the coast, but to travel north or south we have to go around the estuaries of Rogerstown-Turvey and they, because they are protected areas for wildlife, appear to be black holes in our local geography. We go around them but never to them. When you do they can appear empty and devoid of any life.If you are a fisherman you may wonder where your catch comes from, where do the fish reproduce and if you are a birdwatcher, you might wonder what do all the birds eat? The estuaries are where many fish species caught at sea come here to reproduce because the estuaries are sheltered but also be-cause they provide food for the young, just enough to keep them going until they get out to sea. The birds come from Canada and Iceland to feed on a variety of animals living in the mud, and each species has its

preference (but like us, they’ll try different flavours!). The picture shows the ‘favourite’ food for each bird.The little mud animals depend on clean water entering the estuary, so if pollution enters a stream at Ballough, it has an effect at Rogerstown. Too much phosphate and the water is starved of oxygen because certain algae go mad. The mud animals die, and the birds arrive to find less food than before. Breeding fails, the birds move on to other already cramped areas, and the breeding cycle is interrupted reducing the population of birds who keep the fish and mud animals in check. Without them, the mud animals in turn over populate for the avail-able nutrients and space, and they in turn crash. Cycling Without Age Brings Joy of Cycling to Older People Fingal County Council is delighted to announce the launch of Cycling Without Age Fingal, which officially began with a celebratory cycle at St. Catherine’s Park, Lucan on Wednesday, 18 May. Cycling Without Age is a movement that started in Denmark in 2012, led by social entrepreneur Ole Kassow. Ole wanted to help older people get back on their bicycles, but needed a solution to their limited mobility.The answer was a trishaw and he started offering free bike rides to the local nursing home residents. Trishaw bikes offer a very comfortable cycling experience for passengers and cyclists with deep, secure seats designed for maximum safety and electric power assistance helping the cyclist to efficiently manage the load as they move. The Cycling Without Age initiative isn’t just about cycling, it is about meeting the social needs of older people by providing social connection and inclusion.There are 4 locations for Cycling Without Age Trishaws in Fingal. Portmarnock Greenway, South Strand Skerries and in Northwood Demesne where Fingal County Council have partnered with Dublin City University. These 4 local schemes provide an array of opportunities for nursing homes, older persons’ organisations and individuals who want to feel the wind in their hair on a refreshing open-air cycle.Since 2021 Fingal County Council has been recruiting and training volunteers, also known as trishaw pilots, for this exciting scheme. Our older people have often grown up with cycling a major feature of their youth and it’s great to be giving those same people a chance to return to that feeling again. Cycling is a healthy social outlet for people of any age and can be an ideal tool to manage stress and combat isolation. Prawn Pine Nut Salad

140g prawns 1 red pepper 5 (closed cup) mushrooms 1/2 cucumber (200g) 3 scallions 6 sun-stream tomatoes 30g pine nuts- toasted 75g mixed leaves (Spinach, Wild rocket, Red chard, Ruby Chard) Optional could add: red onion, beetroot Dressing of your choice or mix

(in a food processor/blender): 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar, 30mls extra virgin olive oil, 1 teaspoon minced garlic, 2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger, 1 tablespoon sesame seeds.

Method 1.Prepare and chop the salad ingredients and make the dressing as directed above. 2.Cook prawns as per instructions on food label. 3.Marinate prawns in the salad dressing as you assemble the other chopped salad

Graduation from Ireland’s only football focussed TY course

Fingal County Council and the Football Association of Ireland have recently celebrated the graduation of the class of ’22 on the Football and Fitness TY Course, a joint collaboration based at the Corduff Sports Centre. The only course of its kind in Ireland, Football and Fitness has welcomed the latest graduation of its TY students, providing them with the opportunity to meet their educational requirements whilst also developing a whole range of football, fitness and life skills.The 25 TY students from across Fingal received their certificates in front of an audience that included senior members of the FAI, Fingal County Council officials and those involved in the day-to-day running of the programme. latest cohort was Republic of Ireland assistant manager Keith Andrews. He was there alongside Ireland Under-21 and Motherwell star Ross Tierney, who graduated from the TY course in 2017 whilst also playing for Bohemians. While football remains a central focus of the joint Fingal County Council and FAI initiative, students participating in the course also benefit from gaining a highly sought after full Fitness Instructor’s qualification from Litton Lane Training. They also undertake the FAI’s Coach Education pathway that gives them PDP1 and PDP2 qualifications, as well as a gym instructor qualification.Deputy Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Daniel Whooley praised the commitment of the new

TY graduates and that of the coaching staff: FAI Course coordinator Denis Hyland stated: “This is the sixth year of the course and it has gone from strength to strength. This year they also had an opportunity to gain insights from current Ireland and Everton captain Séamus Coleman, who took the time to share his knowledge and experience as a professional player.Since launching in 2016, the TY course has been run in the Dublin 15 area of Fingal, with Corduff Sports Centre providing a base for the various aspects the course involves. Another important element of the course sees the students giving back some of their new founds skills by conducting lessons at schools and with community groups across Fingal.
