Lets take care and enjoy St Paddy’s Day ! With lots of the restrictions regarding Covid 19 now reviewed and relaxed, we at Locals Magazines are like you, thankful we may be beginning to enjoy life again. Plans are going ahead for our first proper St Patrick’s Day in two years. Children and community groups are spending their time organising and decorating floats. Bands from all over the country are heading for our towns and villages in Fingal and Dublin city. We look forward to the sea of green, the music, and the joy of the spectacular parades celebrating our patron saint’s day that are the envy of the world. However we realise we are not out of the woods yet. Our Government has emphasised that there is a very real possibility of a resurgence of variants of Covid 19 nationwide if we don’t continue to take care. Therefore we must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitiser, wearing masks in public, and practising social distancing in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We need to unite further as a community and support those who have supported us over the past two years. In celebrating the re-opening after lockdown we should recall local shops and enterprises going above and beyond their remit to help all of us especially those with health problems and the elderly during the lockdown and now it time to give back and support those same outlets. We at Local magazines really value the essence of community, we are a community based magazine. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and advertisers without whom it would not have been possible to publish the magazine online and now once again in print during this crisis. With some experts predicting yet another phase if we are not careful, we must all continue to grasp this new era and continue to pull together. This means supporting our local businesses, supporting our carers and HSE frontline staff and supporting each other and all in our locality who need our help. Let us all stay safe, enjoy St Patrick’s Day, shop local and support those who have supported us all ! The Locals Team.

Tidy Towns thanks Balbriggan Historical Society

Many thanks to Balbriggan Historical Society for their generous donation to Balbriggan Tidy Towns recently. The Historical Society’s Brian Howley (Chair) presented the Tidy Towns with a cheque and a copy of their fascinating book on the history of Balbriggan. This was to acknowledge the work the Tidy Towns volunteers do for the town but particularly maintaining the plaque to Balbriggan-born, Sinead Flanagan, author, and wife of Eamonn DeValera. A spokesperson for the Tidy Towns said, “Thank you to all in the Historical society; we look forward to planting many more flowers there. If you would like to join Tidy Towns meet us on the beach any Saturday @11.”

Volunteering for Irish Guide Dogs

There are many interesting roles a Volunteer can enjoy when joining a branch of Irish Guide Dogs. In the Balbriggan/North County Dublin branch we have a Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and other volunteers. One is our Roster CoOrdinator who tells how she organises a roster for an event. “I have two lists of volunteers, one for Balbriggan and another for Skerries. Local volunteers increase the likelihood the fundraising team will be known and successful.For an annual event the first volunteers contacted are those who participated previously. Volunteers often attend the same event annually. New volunteers are paired with an experienced volunteer. Two key slots are, setting up and closing. A driver is rostered when merchandise needs transporting to/from an event. The stock is in a secure lockup controlled by two volunteers. A list is given to the stock controllers who gather everything together and leave it ready for collection. The driver and an authorised person collect everything the morning of the event. Where possible, a guide, assistance, ambassador, retired guide dog or puppy in training attends with their owner. A dog or puppy can contribute to the success of the event. A gazebo is used for outdoor events. It is booked in advance to be delivered 30 minutes before the start time. I phone each volunteer a couple of weeks before an event to agree a two-hour slot time. Closer to the date I text confirming everyone’s time and availability. If someone cannot attend, I slot myself in or look for someone else. The roster with the volunteers’ names, time slots and my mobile number is given to the lead volunteer in case someone does not turn up or any other issue occurs. Advice due to Covid is given to the volunteers regarding public health, wearing of masks, social distancing, and sanitation. Creating a roster is enjoyable. I get to talk to and know a lot of volunteers I wouldn’t necessarily know, and I look forward to more events in 2022”. Balbriggan Community Council welcomes new playgrounds Balbriggan Community Council are working together to make a difference to our Town and recently welcomed the opening of two new playgrounds by co-ordinating with different groups within our community and beyond. A special mention and a huge thank you to the playground committee for all their hard work into making this happen for the families and children of Balbriggan! New Public Art Commission for ‘The Banks’ Balbriggan

Fingal County Council is delighted to announce the completion of a new public artwork for Balbriggan. The work titled “The Banks” is by Fingal artist Sean Molloy and is located at this prominent coastal site of the same name in the town. The work has been made possible through collaboration with Iarnród Éireann, Balbriggan and the Our Balbriggan team. The project is part of the many initiatives currently underway that demonstrate how art and artists can enliven and celebrate our public spaces.Mayor of Fingal Councillor Seána Ó Rodaigh welcoming the artwork said “I wish to express my praise to great partnerships and opportunities that allow for local artists to be showcased prominently in our villages 8

and towns and it perfectly describes how we in Fingal value the arts and we would like to extend our sincere thanks to Iarnród Éireann Building Surveyor Joy Murray and her Maintenance Team for all their care and attention applied to realise the install of this work at this unique location. Ms Murray commented: “Iarnród Éireann were delighted to support this Artwork project in conjunction with Fingal County Council which improves the Station Embankment wall presentation for the whole Community”. Sean Molloy’s work is inspired by the genre of 17th and 19th century Dutch and English paintings. Of the process Sean explains:“The original painting measures 5 x 8 ft. and took about 18

months to complete. I referenced the marine paintings of the 17th Dutch masters and also later work by19th century artists. He also cites his very own personal connection to the place: “The history of Balbriggan is an impressive one and while working on location I took the chance to study further the town’s key features. For further research I found the publication ‘Balbriggan, A History of the Millennium’ published by Balbriggan and District Historical Society 1999 a very useful source of information. The Banks is currently on view at the Banks from this month and work continues on another work for the area with another local artist and painter Dave West. Taoiseach turns the sod for a new theatre

Balbriggan and District Historical Society Committee members delighted to attend the official opening of the Irish Institute of Music & Song and sod turning for new 400 seat theatre by An Taoiseach Mícheál Martin today in Balbriggan. Wonderful to see the historical buildings including Bedford House being developed into such a wonderful resource for the town. With the college, La La cafe, the accommodation and new event space this will be a fantastic venue of local, national and international importance.

Local groups receive over €42,000 in grants

Local history, exhibitions, community gardens and street art are just some of the projects which will benefit from Fingal County Council’s announcement of successful grants, showcasing the town’s creativity and helping to develop a sense of identity and social inclusion in Balbriggan. Over €42,000 has been awarded to 16 projects through the Our Balbriggan Placemaking Fund, which aims to inspire people to reimagine and reinvent public spaces in the charming seaside town in North Fingal. Amongst the successful applicants is the Balbriggan Drama Society who were allocated €3,000 to host a photo and memorabilia exhibition celebrating the organisation’s 75th anniversary. Running from March to December 2022, it will be on display in the La La Café at the Irish Institute of Music and Song complex.Celebrating Balbriggan’s maritime heritage and coastal environment, the Balbriggan Playground Group were awarded €4,500 to create visually stunning and effective stone sculpture work created by local artist Darren Rodgers.The good work of Balbriggan Tidy Towns was also recognised with a grant of €1,250 for the ‘Balbriggan is Buzzing’ project, which aims to create natural play areas for children and, encourages them to connect with nature, while also learning about biodiversity.The ‘Community Canvass Project’ under the stewardship of Alison O’Grady was awarded €3,000 and involves an Illustration drawn on sixty canvasses, to combine into one large image. Residents are invited to pick a time and paint one of the canvasses, to form one large image which will be digitised and reproduced for an installation. Projects successful under the latest Placemaking Fund were: Balbriggan Podcast who received €1,667, Castleland Community Centre who received €2,200, Balbriggan Drama Society who received €3,000, Balbriggan Playground Group who received €4,500, Dear Balbriggan Magazine who received €3,500, Grasshoppers Early Years Festival who received €2,800, Newhaven Residence Association who received €2,000, Reach Group who received €2,350, Bremore Educate Together who received €5,000, Balbriggan Tidy Towns who received €1,250, Chapel Gate/Pineridge Residents Association who received €2,000, Foroige who received €2,000, Alison O’Grady who received €3,000, Balbriggan Pumpkin Patch who received €1,260, Taylor Hill Residents Association who received €1,100, and the Irish Institute of Music & Song who received €4,500.

Balbriggan Community Council are asking for the community to come together and support us. Planning permission was recently granted by An Bord Pleanála, for a 95-unit, 6 storeys high ‘Build to Rent’ apartment complex, on the site of the old Tesco’s, High Street Market, and car park. Balbriggan Community Council (BCC) and local residents have expressed a significant number of concerns regarding the planning process and the planned development. BCC took the difficult decision to lodge a Judicial Review of the development. This is a landmark case for Balbriggan, being the first time that Balbriggan has fought a planning decision in the courts We are not alone in lodging Judicial Reviews of SHDs, up and down the country local residents’ associations, community councils and other voluntary organisations have lodged Judicial Reviews of SHDs in their areas. In the Dublin area alone, Ballyboden, Baldoyle, Balgriffen, and Donabate have lodged appeals in the courts. BCC would like to take the opportunity to thank the community for supporting us in taking this case on their behalf and to express its sincere gratitude for all the donations that have been given. BCC stated “we do however need more donations, the Judicial review is costly at €40,000, we’re at 30% of our target to date but the first payment of €20,000 is due and we are approximately €7,000 short. BCC is asking the community if they could assist by donating to the Judicial Review fund and if they could help spread the word about the campaign.”. Being clear on what your long term game plan is and recording your daily wins will help get you through the dip.So if the scales goes up this week by 1kg but you know, you are hitting your steps every day,you are training well and you are staying in a calorie deficit, you can persevere knowing that you are showing up every day and if you keep doing what you are doing that you will achieve results long term.Whereas if you decide to quit while you are in the dip, you may be giving up too soon and will inevitably put yourself back where you started or back to something that you have always done.. joining slimming clubs or cutting out bread.On the other hand, creating a strategy for quitting something may be of benefit to you.You decide you want to

start running, to lose weight. But before you start you set a reason or quitting; if you done it like it or have not seen any progress in a few weeks then you’ll quit running and try something else instead. Balbriggan to host U20s Women’s Area programme training

The Leinster Women’s Committee are delighted to announce the rollout of the U20s Women’s Area programme. This games programme will not be in place of existing Leinster Branch club competitions, but will be an addition specifically for this applicable age

group. Training will commence in early March with the first of matches scheduled for the end of March. The programme is open to players who have reached their 18th birthday by the commencement of the games programme, and those who are under the age of 20 on January

1st prior to the season in which the games programme is played. All training will be hosted by Balbriggan RFC with Jeff Neville and Michelle Claffey taking on the coaching duties. For any queries please email footstown@gmail. com

Scrumptious protein pancakes just for you Protein has become a bit of a buzz word and although most of us in Ireland DO eat enough protein for what our bodies need, a lot of us tend to eat the majority of our protein in our evening meal. Research has shownthat it is more beneficial to try and eat food sources of protein throughout the day rather than a load all at once! Having protein in this way and especially following exercise that uses our muscles will help to keep our muscle and our bodies lean. And the great news is that applies to everyone, no matter your age. Here is a recipe for ‘protein pancakes’ which uses basic food ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen!

Ingredients

Makes 5 x 100g FULFILLING Pancakes!!!

3 eggs 200g oats 300ml high protein milk 2 tablespoons chia seeds

Method 1. Blitz the oats in a blender/nutri bullet until they turn into a flour like mix. 2. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until mixed thoroughly. 3. Heat a non stick pan. 4. When the pan is hot pour some of the mixture on and allow to cook for 2-3 minutes. (Covering the pancakes will help them cook faster). 5. When the edges start to lightly brown and look dry and bubbles start appearing

on the pancake surface,flip the pancake over and cook the other side. Top them off as you like and GOBBLE EM UP!!!! (I love mine with peanut butter, sliced banana and dark chocolate drizzled on top as a scrumptious and VERY satisfying treat!) What if your income gets stopped? By Dave Kavanagh When advising clients and analysing their finances, I ask them how long (if at all) their employer will pay them if they are out of work long term due to illness or injury. In some cases, it is standard and can be something like 3 months at full pay, then 3 months at half pay and then a pensionable rate of pay. For many, they are not sure and when they look through their employment contract, it states “at employer’s discretion”. Many people realised how vulnerable they were when the pandemic arrived, dropping some incomes from €600 or €800 per week down to €350 of PUP. Many don’t give much consideration to how they would cope if they suffered a loss of income for an extended period because they think “it’ll never happen to me”. Sadly, many find out the hard way following an injury or illness that keeps them out of work for months or even years. This is where having Income Protection in place, can be the difference between maintaining a level of income that keeps your lifestyle virtually unchanged, or dropping to a level that could force you to use up any savings and also get into financial difficulty. So how does it work? Depending on your circumstances, you choose an appropriate level of cover. This is based on not exceeding 75% of your salary, less any state income entitlement. You also

choose a “deferred period” which refers to how long you are off work before payments commence.
