Lets stay safe and enjoy our lives this Valentine’s Day Over the past 2 years we have come through a lot. We have come through and are going through lockdowns and curfews. We have been asked to isolate if we have been in touch with our family and friends who have tested positive and we have been told we must ‘elbow greet’ instead of hug those we love and meet. However all of these restrictions have been imposed in a loving way by our Government to try and keep us safe and healthy. It has also been recommended by Health experts that we have no less than three vaccinations to date. This has all been proposed to try and keep our loved ones safe and healthy and to try and safeguard our elderly and our future generations. This Valentine’s Day will be yet another one unlike others we had gotten used to, whether we are teenage lovers or more mature partners. However that does not mean that we cannot show love to those who mean the most to us. Remember. chocolate shops, florists and restaurants and hotels are all open (at the time of going to press) Unlike any other period in history we have the means to stay in touch and communicate without meeting in person, whether that be through a mobile phone call or Facetime or Zoom or whatever technology we have at hand. The worldwide communications structure is so vast now that we need never feel alone and can send messages of love and support to those we care most about. We should also all shop locally and ensure the local jobs of our neighbours and friends. We all know the dangers of not wearing face coverings, not regularly washing our hands thoroughly and not keeping our distance when meeting others. Community transfer of the Omicron variant of the virus seems to be the problem so lets not go back to meeting numbers of people and lets be careful and safe. Simply put, we all want this to decrease again as soon as possible. We all want to reduce the number of people in hospital and worse, so lets all pull together once again as we did before and turn this around quickly, get back to as near normal a society as soon as possible and stay safe and enjoy our lives while being responsible. So please, obey the rules, stay safe, lets pull together and keep supporting our HSE workers, our local shopping outlets and most of all our families and those we love. Have a happy and safe Valentine’s Day from all of us in the Locals team.

Balbriggan Woman launched a childrens book recently First Time author Balbriggan Woman Linda Murray recently launched a children’s book called ‘Dragon Fire and Fairy Dust’ with all the proceeds of it going to Temple St Childrens Hospital. Linda said, ‘I am a Balbriggan local and started writing during the first Lockdown as I was not an essential worker. I found myself very isolated, being alone all day and missing my working life and social outlet. So I started writing poems and moved onto verse stories which are great fun, because you can really let your imagination run. I post my stories on a public Facebook page- Linda Murray Poetry for Life and I got a lot of encouragement so I decided to get a children’s book together. ‘ Well done Linda !

Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD was briefed on the Our Balbriggan Regeneration Plan when he visited the town recently for the official launch of the Irish Institute of Music and Song. During a walk from the Our Balbriggan Hub in St George’s Square to Balbriggan Harbour, the Taoiseach, who was accompanied by Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD, was shown the sites for several major regeneration projects which have received funding from the Urban Regeneration Development Fund (URDF). Among the projects the Taoiseach was shown was the Heart of Main Street, the one hectare area of natural green space along the Bracken River which, with the help of almost €7m in Urban Regeneration Development funding, is going to be transformed into a Green Corridor linking Millpond Park with the centre of Balbriggan and leading to the Beach and Harbour. The Taoiseach was also taken to Quay Street, the Harbour and the Beach where over €11m of 6

URDF support will transform the area on both sides of the Railway Viaduct. Following the short tour, the Taoiseach said that he was very impressed with the Council’s plans for the town: “I’ve been in Supporting people to live self –directed lives Balbriggan before and I must say that I am impressed with the development that is underway here. Stamps and old coins turned into money for Guide Dogs

A stamp album with stamps with pictures of dogs. Second album with stamps from Jamaica.

Tom O’Neill and Anna Giblin sitting outside at a table with two stamp albums and a bag of coins Standing beside Tom is his Guide Dog Qeb a black labrador.

One bag of coins and another bag of used stamps on the table in front of Tom who holds old coins in his hand and Anna who uses a magnifying glass to check some stamps.

There is a phrase I’ve heard which says, ‘There is money in rubbish’. All of us in the Balbriggan\ North County Dublin branch of Guide Dogs have proved this over several years, especially over the past two years. Annually our branch puts out this request, ‘If you have any used postage stamps, stamp albums, or coins which are no longer in circulation, please give them to us. We will turn them into Euros and lodge them to the guide dogs account.’ We receive coins from all over the world and old postage stamps. In our guide dog boxes and large collection dogs we find coins from all over the world and from Europe that are no longer legal currency since

the Euro came into place. We get paper notes of all sorts of denominations, coins and used stamps from our branch volunteers and friends. The stamps go into a box and over the past two years a total of 41 kgs were accumulated. We also received 13 kgs of old foreign coin and 18 foreign notes. A stamp and coin collector from the UK bought them. We received €610 for 41 kgs of stamps, 13 kgs of old coin and old notes. We actually collected 12 kgs of old Irish coin and 22 different old Irish notes. There were some part or torn euro notes, these and the old Irish notes were brought to the Central Bank of Ireland for converting to Euros. The old Irish coin was sold

to a local coin collector for €100. The Central Bank needs old Irish coin sorted in a particular way before they will convert them into Euros for us.We also received sterling coin which came to £165. A branch volunteer took them up North and converted them into sterling notes. These were then converted into €187.93. All money was lodged to the guide dogs’ account. If you have any used postage stamps or old Irish coins or notes or foreign coins or notes, please contact us at 085 7663107 or email GuideDogsBalbriggan@ gmail.com Thank you, Tom O’Neill, Guide Dog Owner.

Six Simple Ways To Get A Handle On Your Snacking Ciaran Russell What is a Snaccident. (pr: Snax-eh-dent). It is when food (a snack) is consumed in an accidental, often regrettable way. This can refer to accidentally eating food of questionable quality and/or quantity. Snacking can be an issue for a lot of people when it comes to trying to reach any health, weight loss or fitness goals. Here six ways to take control of your snacking habits. (1.) Controlling your food environment. The problem here is you may be surrounding yourself with the temptation that’s increasing the chance you’ll give in to those cravings. Put physical barriers between you and the food, in other words make it harder to get to. Move them from one press to another to interrupt the pattern. Or don’t buy them in the first place. Making it more difficult, you’re more likely to give up on it. (2.) Pick foods that fill you up. There’s nothing wrong with eating food that doesn’t fill you, but you’ll be back an hour later for more. Increase your protein intake, think meat, dairy, eggs, cheese, yogurt, shakes. Opt for more water-rich foods, such as potatoes, beans and fruit. Foods high on the satiety index will keep you fuller for longer. Remember carbs are not the enemy, they’re a fantastic source of energy and fibre. (3.) Beware of food that tastes amazing! Your body want energy, this energy comes from the food and drink you consume. It particularly wants food with a mix of protein, carbs, fats and salt. Eating foods containing high amounts of these and you will crave more. The solution? Don’t restrict any food from your diet, simply reduce the frequency you have them. (4.) Sort out your sleep. Maybe you’re not sleeping enough or the quality of your sleep is poor, or maybe both. This leads to you feeling tired and cranky, craving quick energy. This means you make poor food choices. What you can do is aim to get to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Your body clock doesn’t know it’s the weekend! Keep your bedroom

dark and cool to improve the chances of staying asleep. Reduce your screen time an hour before bed to allow your brain to wind down. (5). Make sure you’re active every day. Part of the problem is that you’re not exercise enough and that you lead a sedentary lifestyle. Which means you’re not burning many calories during the day. Aim for 8000+ steps per day, resistance training is a great way to keep active, find something you enjoy doing and do it often. (6.) Reduce your stress levels. The problem is you’re busy at work

or at home and feel like you’ve loads to do. All these stresses pile up and contribute to you eating emotionally to feel better. Tackle the root cause to reduce your overeating, the stress. Allocate time in the day just for you, to read or go for a walk. Try some meditation, headspace is a great app to use. Look back at tips 1-5 to help reduce your stress too. Fingal Community Groups invited to apply for Community Activities Funding

Community and voluntary groups in Fingal are invited to apply for funding under the 2022 Community Activities Fund. The Community Activities Fund (CAF) is a once-off fund that provides grants to assist community and voluntary groups with facilities upgrades, equipment purchase and running costs. The CAF is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development with Fingal allocated €301,042 in funding for groups across the county. The CAF is administered by Local Community Development Committees (LCDCs) in each Local Authority area. It is part of the wider Community Enhancement Programme, which has funded over 8,000 projects in urban and rural communities throughout Ireland since first being launched in 2018. Applications are now being sought from community and voluntary groups in Fingal for grants up to a maximum of €15,000 with a closing date for applications of Friday, February 18, 2022 at 6:00 pm. Commenting on the announcement, AnnMarie Farrelly, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council said: “The work of the community and

voluntary sector is highly valued by Fingal County Council. The Community Activities Fund will assist community groups with the valuable work they do within our communities. I would advise community groups to examine the CAF and avail of the opportunity to apply for funding if it is relevant to their activities.” Declan Ryan, Chief Officer of the Fingal Local Community Development Committee added: “The Community Activities Fund comes from within the Community Enhancement Programme group of funds. These funds have been availed of widely by community groups in Fingal in recent years, which has resulted in valuable funding being distributed to groups in disadvantaged areas in particular. The new CAF has the added benefit of allowing applications for both capital costs and operating costs. This added flexibility is very welcome. The Fingal LCDC looks forward to supporting the delivery of this scheme.” Full details on the 2022 Community Activities Fund and how to apply online can be accessed at submit.link/Ch.

Launch of Maria Butterly’s new song ‘HERO’ Maria Butterly will launch her new song ‘HERO’ produced by Bill Shanley and recorded in the world famous Windmill Lane Recording Studios in Naul this month. This song touches on an important and hot topic hitting young teens today-bullying. There is an interesting Story behind Maria’s new single ‘HERO’.It is a story of a young teen being called names in school, who dreams up a fictional hero character that represents the inner strength within us all, which allows us to confront and overcome the challenges presented to us whether internal or external. And addresses anti-social behaviour, bullying, and the challenges young students can be faced with in their world! Music has the power to connect with people and this new single from Maria ‘HERO’ is another example of that. A lot of my songs are inspired from true stories, some my own and some of others like this one. It’s radio friendly and the story is a good talking point!…. Not so long ago, I received a handwritten letter from an LMFM listener who was on the verge of taking his own life at 1am in the morning, until he heard my song ‘ANGEL’ being played on LMFM radio, he said the words of the song lifted him and brought him comfort and most of all ‘Hope’ that night and stopped him from doing the unthinkable. He is still with us today!

Harry Reynolds Road pedestrian and cycle route works!

Trees will be retained, or new trees planted along the route where space allows. In this artist’s impression trees on the left path area have been removed.

Advance works for a new €8.5m Pedestrian and Cycle Route along the Harry Reynolds Road in Balbriggan began recently. Fingal County Council had appointed a contractor to carry out advance works along the 2km route. The advance works contract includes tree planting and tree clearing work along the length of the intended Cycle Route. These works are being carried out at this time to optimise the growth potential of new trees planted and to also ensure that tree removal works are completed before the start of the bird nesting season on March 1.The completion of the 12 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-FEBRUARY 2022

advance works will also ensure a quicker start to the main construction phase once the contract is awarded. The main works contract is due to commence in August 2022 with an estimated 12 month duration and further consultation will be undertaken with the community for those works in due course. After consultation with local Councillors, Balbriggan Community Council, Balbriggan Tidy Towns, and other stakeholders, Fingal County Council revised its advanced works plan. It has agreed that 304 new trees and additional hedgerow will be planted along and

adjacent to the route in order to compensate for the 130 trees which will be removed to accommodate construction of the new cycle lanes. During the advance works phase, 174 new trees and hedgerow are being planted in several areas along the route including the R132 intersection on southern end of the route, Moylaragh and Ashfield. The remainder of the trees will be planted alongside the new cycle lanes during the main construction phase. These cycle lanes will facilitate safe travel by bike and scooter to schools, shops and businesses in the local area. Improve your health, improve your wealth! By Dave Kavanagh Another start of a year and despite Covid 19 still present, many people will still be intent on embarking on making some positive changes or improvements in their lives. The most recognisable of these is the ‘losing weight” one. It’s worth noting that if done properly, losing weight can have the added bonus of leaving you with more money at the end of each month. So how does that work? Well, by “doing it properly” I refer to NOT going on a diet, or buying products with magic properties that will make the weight just fall off. Instead, making small, sustainable lifestyle changes. It can be adding some exercise in week 1, drinking more water (and less alcohol/ sugar laden drinks) in week 2, reducing portion sizes in week 3, substituting things like chips for wholegrain rice or pasta in week 4, breaking the association of biscuits/cakes whenever you have a coffee or tea in week 5, etc., etc. Doing it this way, makes it sustainable and when weight is dropped slower over a longer period of time, it is far more likely to be kept off. So how does that improve your wealth? When I analyse people’s spending budgets, it’s clear that takeaways, alcohol, sweets, cakes biscuits etc., pop up quite frequently. If you keep track of the savings when you cut down on many of these things, it’s easy to see how much you can save. Keeping a detailed spending budget

Contact us: communitylocalseditor@gmail.com

where you log every day what you spend (not just the name of the shop, but the actual items) Lets you look back and accurately see what you have spent on the things you actually want to cut down on (one person told me “I can’t believe I ate 38 packets of crisps last month!!”) As for the xmas leftover junk, it can either go in the waste or on your waist. Make the right choices, one day at a time, and you bank account will thank you.

Valentine’s Day Romantic Rawlos Try these for a tasty, romantic Valentine’s day or an any day treat. Blitzing up dates in a little bit of water turns them into a melt in the mouth healthier caramel!!! Add nut butter and you’re packing in protein and healthy fats (which we need in small amounts!) Smoother them in dark chocolate and you’re reaping all those beautiful cocoa benefits!! The great thing is even though they are so delicious, they are very filling so you won’t scoff them down as you might do with a normal pack of Rolo’s.Plus they are SOOO simples to make!

Ingredients

(Makes 12 ‘Rawlos’) • 60g Dates in 1-2 tablespoons water • 140g Almond butter (or a nut/seed butter of your choice!) • 50g Dark chocolate (AT least 70% cocoa)

Method 1. Having soaked the dates in a small amount of water overnight, mash them up. If they don’t mash up easily, heat them gently in the microwave/hob. 2.Add the nut/seed butter to the mashed dates and mix well. 3. Roll into balls and freeze for 1 hour.

4.Melt dark chocolate. Coat the balls in the dark chocolate and freeze for 20minutes. See how long they can last melting in your mouth without you gobbling up their gooey centre and crisp chocolate shell!!!!
