With lots of the restrictions regarding Covid 19 now reviewed and relaxed and promises of more to come we at Locals Magazine are like you, hoping we are beginning to see a new era for us all. Summer may be here but even though it seems we may be able to mix more and enjoy it, we still have to be very careful . We must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitiser, wearing masks in public, and social distancing in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We must also protect our mental and physical health as well and let the sunshine into our lives once again. This should also mean supporting those who have supported us over the past 15 months. This means shopping locally supporting our local businesses and securing local employment. We at Local magazines really value the essence of community, we are a community based magazine and love promoting local community based sporting and voluntary organisations. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and our advertisers without whom it would not have been possible to publish the magazine online and more recently once again in print during this crisis. The days and months ahead will be crucial to the survival of each and every one of us. Crucial to all of us workers and business owners and the survival of those of us who have health problems and those children who have their whole lives ahead of them.We may be coming out of lockdown but that does not mean being over exuberant. We must all continue to grasp this new era cautiously and continue to pull together while not forgetting the consequences if we do not. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to return to what we knew to be normality two years ago. To enjoy again all the good things with our loved ones, families and friends which we have missed. Things can only get better if we are all careful. This also means supporting our local businesses, supporting our carers and HSE frontline staff and supporting each other and all in our locality who need our help. New arrival for Guide Dogs branch

Adel and Anne

Adel, a 3½ month old female Golden Labrador guide dog puppy in training, was welcomed into Anne Mulligan’s home on Thursday 6th May. Adel, part of the first litter of 2021, was born on the 29th January. Both her parents are French. Her mother is ‘Never’ and her father is ‘Pacha du Cesecah’. ‘Never’ gave birth to 9 pups, 6 female and 3 male.Sadly 1 male didn’t survive. Adel’s siblings are, Alice, Aska, Anya, April, Andrew, Alfie, and Anna. We will follow Adel’s progress over the next 12 months with interest. When you see Anne and Adel out and about, please be aware that when Adel is wearing her ‘Puppy in Training’ jacket, she should not be distracted or approached. If you have a dog with you, please give them both room to pass without interference. Adel’s daily training with Anne is a vital part of her journey towards becoming a Guide or Assistance Dog. Adel’s first visit to Balbriggan beach with Anne was exciting as she raced around freely enjoying all the new sounds and smells.Anne says, ‘Adel has settled in well and is a happy and an intelligent puppy’.We wish them well together.Yarrow update – Yarrow has progressed onto Advanced Training earlier than expected. He will be with 5 other dogs during his training until August/ September. Looking back. In 1984 there was an article entitled ‘Robot Guide Dog’.Called ‘Meldog’, it had wheels instead of legs, sensors instead of eyes and its memory was a map reading computer. Meldog’s inventors were forced to admit ‘A dog has excellent abilities which we cannot imitate by a machine’. That’s why ‘Meldog’ is no more, and why we cherish real dogs like Adel and Yarrow who are selected and trained to become a Guide or Assistance Dog.Would you like to join our volunteers? Foróige Summer programme to be launched this month Foróige is so excited to announce our 2021 summer programmes will be launching on the 15th of June until the 20th of August! Our summer programmes are packed with fun and engaging activities for young people of all ages throughout the entire summer. Activities will include sports like basketball, football, outdoor obstacle courses and if you don’t enjoy sports, don’t worry. We will also be hosting a safe space to practice your graffiti skills, painting and artistic abilities. Want to sit back and just enjoy an outdoors movie? We have that too, amongst fishing trips and a nice picnic under the scorching sun. There is a specific focus this year on promoting health and wellbeing and this will be incorporated into all programmes on offer. Our summer programmes are inclusive to all of our projects and each week is dedicated to activities tailored specifically for everyone’s interests. These free summer programmes will give young people the opportunity to express their creativity and their talents in a natural environment with the support of professional youth workers and hardworking volunteers. Young people will experience competitive games that will help them develop skills like teamwork and communication skills. The summer programme will be open to all the young people who are in a Foróige project or club. There is limited availability for those who are not currently involved with Foróige. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, we must restrict the amount of young people in each programme so we ask that if you are interested in registering interest you do it as soon as possible. Inheritance money -Does the tax man have to take it? By Dave Kavanagh In 2019 in Ireland, there was €455 million collected in Capital Acquisition Tax. This covers both inheritance tax and gift tax. It also includes estates that may have been taxed in previous generations. For example, if someone left an estate worth €2,000,000 to an only daughter, she would (in the current tax year) have a tax bill of almost €550,000. After she pays the bill and puts what’s left in the bank, any interest is taxed (DIRT). Guess what happens when she passes and leaves her estate behind? It’s taxed again! Spouses can leave any amount to each other tax free. After that, the three thresholds are, a) Children - €335,000, b) Other close relatives €32,500 and c) All others (including cohabiting partners) - €16,250. Everything received above these is taxed at 33%.So, is there any way to avoid it? There are two main actions that can either reduce or eradicate such a tax bill. The first is to take the time to plan when making a will. Let’s say a value of €750,000 was being left to 2 adult children. (Not a big estate if you combine a house, savings and a life policy). This would create a tax bill of over €25,000. Instead, if €670,000 of it was left to the 2 children and the balance between a few grandchildren, there is no tax bill. The second thing that can be done is for the person leaving the estate to take out a Section 72 plan. This is a

type of life policy that is allowed to pay any tax liability without adding to the value of the estate. It becomes particularly important for anybody that does not have children to plan things out, as even other relatives can only receive €32,500 before any balance is taxed. Make the time to plan.

Build your own home gym after lockdown by Siobhán O’Neill White Over lockdown many of us have gained a few extra lbs but hooray, summer is coming, restrictions are easing and it’s time to get back into shape - without spending a fortune on fancy food plans & gym memberships! We have been working on building a gym space at home, in what was a musty garage full of discarded paint tins and broken bikes! We started with 2 coats of heavy duty paint and then laid a floor which is specially designed for gyms. All we needed was 18 gym mats from blackswan.ie. No glue, no hard work just set them down, give them a soapy mopping and hey presto, floor was done! They are heavy and sturdy and do not curl at the edges.We’ve been picking up gym equipment from Fittrhome.ie. They have everything from dumbells to power racks and also offer a bespoke gym design service. I’m skipping & using small dumbells in the garage, while my have son is lifting bigger weights and saving up for a quarter rack. It’s given him great focus! Finally, for a boost of energy, we’ve been taking a daily supplement ‘Immune Phyx’ from award winning Irish company, Phytaphix.ie Everyone in our family is taking it - its an all rounder product, good for everyone! Long term fitness results aren’t instantly gratifying By Ciaran Russell Ever since the internet became a thing people have been conditioned to *click* and receive. Instant gratification is part of our lives more so now than ever. It can be very gratifying to be able to have what you want, whenever you want for most things in life. People now can accomplish a huge list of things on their phone, all without getting off the sofa.This is now affecting people’s health and fitness causing a massive problem when it comes to diets and losing weight. With instant gratification becoming more prevalent people can look to gain quick results or take some shortcuts to achieving what they believe might be success. These shortcuts might look like juice cleanses, meal replacement shakes or supplements claiming to boost fat loss in short periods of time. When it comes to diet and exercise, there are no instant results.In order to achieve any weight loss or fitness goals you have to have a plan, put in some hard work and effort over a long period of time. Sometimes you can be working for weeks and not see results but then decide to give up. You get discouraged and enter into a vicious cycle of try to lose weight, fail, try something more extreme and so on.Be careful when you see a product or service promising a result in a short period of time. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is. People who achieve results, and sustain them, recognise that there is 8

no easy fix. There is no instant gratification. They trust in a plan, commit to it for a few months at least, and amazing things start happening. They look better with their shirt off. Their clothes are less tight. They feel better in their own skin. They start getting compliments.You don’t have to do crazy fad diets for a week to lose weight. You need

to do the basics consistently. Train 3-4 times a week. Make sure the majority of your meals are properly portioned. Eat lots of fruit & vegetables. Eat enough protein. Get 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Drink plenty of water.Executing the basics consistently is the one thing that everyone who has lost weight, and kept it off, has done. Cruinniú na nÓg 2021 Fingal Programme launched

Fingal County Council is delighted to announce an exciting and varied programme for Cruinniú na nÓg which takes place on June 12, 2021. Cruinniú na nÓg, Creative Ireland’s annual day of free creative activity for children and young adults, has gone from strength to strength since its launch in 2018. It is an event that is unique to Ireland and is the flagship initiative of the Creative Ireland’s programme Creative Youth which aims to“give every child practical access to tuition, experience and participation in art, music, drama and coding by 2022”.Working In partnership with the 31 Local Authorities and supported by RTÉ, Creative Ireland works tirelessly to create a day where families and young people can participate in a wide range of fun creative activities that are all free. Fingal County Council’s Cruinniú na nÓg programme has been collaboratively developed by the Creative & Cultural team which is made up of cross departmental

representatives with skills in many different areas of expertise. The result of the teams’ hard work is a programme full of events that is guaranteed to arouse curiosity, spark interest and ignite the imagination and most of all encourage the young people across the county to tap in to their creative side and have fun.The programme which has a combination of outdoor, live and recorded virtual events features a Dublin Zoo Webinar, Coding and Podcast Classes, Make and Do workshops, a Bespoke Interactive Radio Piece, a Story Trail set in the beautiful demesne of Ardgillan castle, Hip Hop and Dance classes, Music Tutorials, and young adult interest stories to name but a few, will ensure that Cruinniú na nÓg 2021 is a day filled with happy memories for all of the families, children and young people that get involved. The following Zoom activities were delivered over the past two months and continue to be delivered by Nora and Paul who have kept the Remember Us participants entertained throughout the lockdown.Amongst the activities which took place over the past 43 days were: a Disco, the wonderful Paul & Nora show ( make a video ) x 8 times, A Quiz x 5 times, Yoga x 2 times, Bingo x 8 times, 2 x Dance sessions, a Virtual trip to the Zoo, Crafts: DIY Key Wind Chimes, Play Your Cards Right/Mini disco, Lantern making, 2 x Exercise sessions,Crafts: Stress Ball making,Night at the movies, a Virtual tour of Ripley’s Aquarium,Body Percussion, a

Cookery session, a Treasure Hunt,an Art n Crafts session,a Magic Show, and a Treasure Hunt. Nora Roban said , “I open the zooms at about 6.45 so members can come in and have a chat with us and activity starts at 7.30. when it finishes we have another chat. Weekly Webt exts to all members & their families /volunteers to see how they are getting on and to say we are at end of phone if they want to call for a chat etc.,Daily posts on Facebook/Instagram since we broke up of photos sent to me via e-mail from our members. Each day if there is a member’s birthday, we post it on Facebook.- Emails/phone manned everyday / weekend.” She added.“ Regarding the Paul n Nora

National COVID-19 Wastewater Surveillance Programme in Ireland A National SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Wastewater Surveillance Programme, that has been developed by a specialist team, with input from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC), HSE, HIU, the National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL), UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science, and Irish Water,began work in early May.This wastewater surveillance programme will be an important part of the work being undertaken to monitor the prevalence of COVID-19 in communities across Ireland. The programme will measure the level of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater within 68 wastewater catchment areas across the country and will effectively operate as an early warning system for future possible waves of COVID-19 infection. Professor Wim Meijer, UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science, Lead Investigator said, “The pilot study, funded by SFI and the Ireland Wales Programme 2014 – 2020 through the European Regional Development Fund, involving three wastewater treatment plants showed a very close correlation between the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 genetic material and the daily number of new COVID-19 cases.

For the”choo-choo” Choose More Vegetables Train I used carrot batons for the train track, peppers as the carriages and cucumber as the train wheels held in by cocktail sticks (be careful of children with cocktail sticks).Fill the carriages with hummus, salsa, guacamole or other vegetables or fruit!

For the Sleeping Star Melon Cradle Use star or other shaped cookie cutters to make shapes with fruit and/or vegetables. I used various types of melon, colourful peppers and pineapple in this image. The sleeping baby inside is an orange with a soother and eyes drawn on using marker!

Glebe North wishes Adam well for the future Our Senior team manager Adam Foley has regretfully stepped away from his position with the club with immediate effect. Adam has taken this decision as he cannot give the position his full attention as he is pursuing a very successful playing career in the LOI Premier Division. We are sad to see Adam go but Glebe North wish him every success as he continues to shine on the playing field. We thank Adam for his tireless work with the club and look forward to welcoming him back to the club in the future whether it is as a player or coach or in any capacity (His blood still flows green). The club have appointed Darius Kierans as the new manager of our senior team. Darius comes to the club as a highly recommended and experienced coach. We look forward to working with Darius Adam Foley

and wish him the very best as he takes over the reigns from Adam.
