Halloween Pop-Up Shop at Balbriggan Meals on Wheels Friday 15th October from 10.00 AM to 1.00 PM Balbriggan Meals on Wheels is holding a special Pop up Shop for all things Halloween! So pop down to the rear of 14 Hampton Street, Balbriggan and pick up your Halloween decorations, costumes etc. Friday 15th October 10.00am to 1.00pm.All proceeds raised go towards Balbriggan Meals on Wheels. Balbriggan Meals on Wheels Mprovides meals to the most vulnerable people in our community; they are people who are referred to us by Public Health Nurses and Social Workers. We operate six days per week and currently provide in the region of 80-100 meals per day in the wider Balbriggan Community.

What Exactly Should You Be Insuring First? By Dave Kavanagh We often see that on top of the more compulsory car and home insurance, that many people also have travel insurance, pet insurance, mobile phone/laptop insurance etc. When we ask about insurance on their most important and valuable assets, themselves, (outside of mortgage protection), it is often something that was never considered, despite the potentially enormous financial loss that would occur in the event of a fatality (especially when there are children to consider!). We understand, it’s not the most fun conversation to have, but the reality is these things happen all too frequently and often unexpectedly. For example, a couple with young children and an income of €50,000 per annum, who in the event of a fatality of one of the parents, could suddenly have to live on the state’s survivor’s pension, giving them a massive drop in income and lifestyle. Worth mentioning that the loss would be the same when there are young children whether it was an income earner or a homemaker, as the income earner would either be gone, losing their income, or have to give up work to raise the children. Surveys have shown, that the actual cost of cover is far cheaper than people expect, and there is a variety of options to suit people’s specific circumstances. Plans can either be selected based on levels of cover in relation

Children are already planning their Halloween outfits by Siobhan O’Neill White It’s been a hectic few months; getting the children back to school and dealing with the difficulties Covid still causes. As life has become somewhat normal again, we can plan things that we could not last year, like Halloween! My children are planning their outfits and are super excited to go trick or treating, decorate the house and carve pumpkins. For younger children, there’s the Pooka Spooka Halloween event at Causey Farm. For over 16’s teens & adults (who think being scared is great craic), there’s Farmaphobia. My husband will probably have my nail imprints dug in his palms by the end, as I’m a big scaredy cat but we are really looking forward to going with our two teens this October.If you are looking for other fun Halloween themed things to do, why not go pumpkin picking! There are lots of farms doing this so a quick google should help you find one close to you. It’s exciting for the little ones to choose their pumpkin from a farm! up to the Four Seasons Hotel in Carlingford. Its such a beautiful part of the country and lots to do with Skypark and Carlingford water activities. Grace Tierney’s new book “Words The Vikings Gave Us” Grace Tierney today releases her third book about the history of words. This time she’s exploring the influence of Old Norse and our Viking heritage on the English we speak today. Grace, a native of the Viking city of Dublin, who moved to north of Balbriggan in 2005 says she was surprised by how much of an influence the Vikings had on how we speak.“I’ve been blogging every Monday at www.wordfoolery.wordpress.com for 12 years (NB: Not accessible through this medium) about the history behind English words, and chatting about it on LMFM radio each month. Viking history shows they were much more than just raiders. They traded down the Silk Roads, built settlements from Russia in the east to Canada in the west (centuries before Columbus “found” the Americas), and established the oldest parliament in the world giving us words like law and ombudsman along the way - not exactly the lawless hooligans we expect,” she says.She believes the Vikings deserve more credit, particularly as they founded many of the coastal towns and cities in Ireland. Without them we wouldn’t have words like - them, they, time, sky, happiness, get, slang, trash, Friday, or take. Their contribution to romance is strong too - honeymoon, husband, hug, kiss, handfasting, and even glitter. She loves the stories behind the words - the Viking king with a rotten tooth whose runes are on our smartphones (Bluetooth anybody?), their surprisingly modern approach to women’s rights, the operatic costume designer who convinced the world Vikings wore horns on their helmets (they didn’t), and how the word enthralling gives us a grim glimpse into the time when Dublin was a slave trading centre.“Words The Vikings Gave Us” is out now in paperback and ebook (Amazon, Kindle, Kobo, signed copies from the author’s blog, etc), along with her earlier books - “Words the Sea Gave Us” (nautical words and phrases, with a side order of pirates) and “How To Get Your Name In The Dictionary” (the stories of the people whose names entered the dictionary, from Casanova to Zeppelin). ‘Remember Us’ enjoyed a six week outdoor Summer camp

‘Remember Us’ ran a 6 week outdoor Summer camp for their 4 – 17 year olds two days per week and a six week camp 1 night on zoom and Saturday outings for their adult members this year.Activities included Teddy bears picnic, Newbridge farm, walk, games and picnic in Malahide Castle, Beach day, Scavenger hunt, trip to St.Anns Park, T-shirt design, sensory games, teddy bear making, Zoom Bingo, Zoom fitness, and much more As you will see from the photos of our members smiling they really enjoyed it.A massive thanks to all our CE/TUS placements and our volunteers for all their help and support during the Summer and of course through out the last 18 months. It is very much appreciated.Our members are excited as we are resuming our club activities this week although be it on Zoom for the next two weeks. Film Presentation at Loughshinny Boathouse for Culture Night As part of Fingal County Council’s Commemorations programme 2018-2023 Fingal County Council’s Arts Office in association with The Irish Writers Centre recently presented – A Burning Tide – A New Commissioned Writing & Film Commission as part of Culture Night 2021, held on 17th of September 2021 at Loughshinny Boathouse. The Film is based on the writers interpretation of this historical fact. At the stroke of midnight on 18th June 1921, six Coast Guard stations on the North Dublin coast were silently approached by groups of IRA Men ready to undertake a simultaneous attack. The reason for these attacks was to secure a landing place for a shipment of arms which were being smuggled from the U.S. aboard the freighter East Side. It had been meticulously planned – the raiding parties lay in wait having cut the telephone wires to ensure no one could raise the alarm. When zero hour arrived, they rushed into stations up and down the coast, taking the Coast Guards by surprise. The Guards and their families, who lived onsite, were told to leave immediately and the stations were set alight. As dawn broke the following morning, flames were still licking what was left of the stations at Skerries, Loughshinny, Rush, Rogerstown, Portrane and Robswall. The film weaves the narratives from each new piece of writing into a series of vignettes where we see the stories unfold to create visible characters who bring us back to the events leading to the night and its aftermath in Ireland. Rory O’Byrne County Arts Officer, said “There is something about the visible qualities of the largely unchanged Fingal Coastline, where the events of the night of the 18th of June 1921, took place. The eyewitness reports prompt the imagination to fill in the gaps of the story, a small boat containing guns rowing into Loughshinny, the visual of two men saving a piano from the fire and the agreements made to start it so that nobody was harmed could only be satisfied by a writer’s mind.”.

First Primary School in Fingal receives an automatic weather station

The Deputy Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Daniel Whooley, launched the second part of The Weather Stations for Schools project yesterday at the Rush and Lusk Educate Together National School when he presented Third Class with the first of the automatic weather stations that are being rolled out to primary schools across Fingal.Primary Schools in Fingal had the opportunity to apply for an automatic weather station which produce real time information about rainfall, temperature, wind speed and wind direction. There were 42 applications from which 16 were chosen. Cllr Whooley said: “It was fantastic to officially launch the second phase of the Weather Stations for Schools project and present the class with the automatic weather station today. This initiative is being supported by the Chief Executive’s Innovation Fund, set up January this year by the Chief Executive of Fingal County Council AnnMarie Farrelly. Ms Farrelly said: “This is the first of four projects to be launched from the Innovation Fund this year. The Innovation fund was launched to facilitate staff submitting original ideas that can bring greater value to the Council. The Weather Stations for Schools project is a great initiative that will not only provide valuable information, but it will also help to promote an appreciation of the water cycle and climate change challenges faced by the community.” Sarah Gallagher, Head of Observations at Met Éireann, said: “Met Éireann are very supportive of the Weather Contact us: communitylocalseditor@gmail.com

Balbriggan & District Historical Society celebrates 40th Birthday

Balbriggan & District Historical Society are delighted to celebrate this significant milestone however all celebrations are restricted of course at this time. Jim Walsh Librarian at the time and his colleague Don Griffin worked were joined on the first committee by Michael Banim, Antonia Cassin, Pauline Corcoran, Marion Crane, Bernie Healy, Eileen McKenna and last but not least May and Pat McKeon.Our society was inaugurated on Thursday 16th July 1981 with the name of Balbriggan Historical and Cultural Society – Cumann Stair agus Cultúir Bhaile Brigin and the main aims were to promote an interest in the local history of the area through lectures, publications and exhibitions and also to establish a Museum in the Balbriggan District. The first ever presentation was ‘The Gaelic Placenames of Fingal’ by Brendan Scally and was followed by Bob Browne- The building of the Dublin-Drogheda Railway –1838-1844. Next was Christy Geraghty with an illustrated lecture of Local Shipwrecks with particular reference to Sarah of Runcorn (1873) and Bell Hill (1875). In 1982 the Committee decided to hold an exhibition in the Grand Hotel and exceeded all expectations in terms of both participation and also attendance. We were delighted by the generosity of the populace who gladly donated many items of historical and familial interest. . May McKeon remembers with fondness some of the talks on the ‘Balbriggan flyer’ Harry Reynolds, Balbriggan’s daughter Sinead Bean De Valera nee Flanagan and several talks covering the 1916 events in Fingal.Of particular pride to May is also the event organised in 2017 to commemorate the hugely important Siege of Jadotville in the Congo in 1961 and the heroic efforts of Balbriggan native Pte Terence Joseph McMahon. One particular source of pride to Chairperson Brian Howley is the enormous effort that the Committee undertook to ensure the Centenary of the Sack of Balbriggan last year 2020 would have a fitting and appropriately respectful commemoration and there are still a small amount of the beautiful Commemorative Medals available. We are still very determined to find a Museum building to house our significant artefacts and historical items – who knows somewhere on Bremore Castle site may yet be an option? TRICK OR TREAT ‘Fangtastic’ recipes for Halloween

It’s that time of year again. But we don’t have to wait until October 31 to sink our teeth into some ‘Fangtastic’ foods. Try out these WICKED ideas to ‘creep’ the fun into every bloody meal!

GHOSTBUSTERS PEASY POTATO Cook and mash potatoes with a drop of milk. Cook peas. Keep a few for eyes aside and blitz the rest in a blender. Add a few drops of water to make a thick green paste. Melt in some cheddar cheese to make tasty cheezy peas. Spoon a puddle of the blended peas onto a plate. Assemble a tablespoon of potato into a mountain shape and place on top of the green pea slop! Add two peas as eyes onto the potato stacks.

SPOOKY ‘SANDWITCH’ SNAKE: Chop a cheese string into even sized round chunks. Place cherr y tomatoes in between cheese chunks. Chop top and tail off cucumber and use as the head and tail of snake. Place a pea on top of a piece of sweetcorn and use cream cheese/hummus to make them stick to each other and to the cucumber head as eyes. Chop a carrot into the shape of a tongue and place sticking out of the cucumber head.

Do’s and do not’s when a Guide Dog is working Roisin Dermody, a guide dog owner, shares some simple but very important tips in her video entitled ‘Please don’t distract working guide dogs’.When a guide dog is working it will have its harness on. Even if the dog is lying at its owners’ feet if it has its harness on, then it is in ‘work mode’ and must not be approached or distracted without the owner’s permission. Once the harness is removed the guide dog is released from ‘work mode’ and will behave like a regular dog. However as with all dogs you should ask permission to approach the dog to say ‘hello’. Guide dog owners may not always give you permission to pet their guide dog. Why? All dogs are different, even guide dogs.Whereas one in harness might not be distracted another could be easily distracted. It may not switch back into ‘work mode’ easily. So please do not be offended if one guide dog owner permits you to say ‘hello’ to their dog, while another does not.Guide dogs are highly trained to assist their owners but there may be some instances where help is needed. There is more street furniture around, which can cause difficulties.If you see a visually impaired person who may need help just say something like ‘Hi, is there anything I can help you with?’ Please do not grab the person as you may startle them. Calories matter but it’s not all about Calories

By Ciaran Russell Calories come from food and drink that is ingested and absorbed in the body. When in a calorie deficit, weight loss will occur and when in a calorie surplus, weight gain will occur. That’s the basic principal of energy balance, also known as calorie balance. When it comes to health and nutrition, there’s more to it than just calories.Food can be separated into two categories; macronutrients and micronutrients. Macronutrients are the big food groups such as carbohydrates, protein and fat, while micronutrients are made up of vitamins and minerals. Fibre can sometimes also be referred to a macronutrient because of its importance in the diet and gut health. Protein is essential for the maintenance and repair of muscle tissue and cells within the body. The recommended daily allowance of protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram

of bodyweight but this can usually be increased depending on type of activity undertaken or someone’s age. For example people that lift weights regularly are recommended to take 1.6g – 2.2g per kg of bodyweight whereas the aging population are recommended to take 1g – 1.2g per kg of bodyweight. Carbohydrates are sometimes shunned by some people in the bid to lose weight but by cutting out carbs people are reducing a very good energy source that is essential for normal bodily functions. The recommended daily allowance of carbohydrates is 50% of daily calorie intake. Carbohydrates can be classed as simple sugars, such as; fruit juices, syrups, jams and sweets, or complex carbohydrates including; potatoes, rice, pasta, fruit & veg.Carbohydrates are stored in the body in the form of glycogen in the muscles, liver and circulating in the blood. This is the main source of energy within your body and it is unnecessary

to restrict carbohydrates when fat loss is a goal. Fibre comes mainly from carbohydrate sources such as, wholegrains, nuts,seeds, beans pulses and vegetables with the skin on. Fibre supports feelings of fullness, contributes to lower risk of cardiovascular disease, supports weight loss and maintenance, reduces risk of bowel cancer and supports healthy digestion. The recommended daily intake of fibre is 30g per day.Finally Fat has had a bad rap for a long time but unnecessarily so because fat is a good source of energy, has fat soluble vitamins and provides essential fatty acids which the body can’t produce itself. It is recommended that fat makes up no more than 35% of daily calories. Fat is made up of trans fat, saturated fat and unsaturated fat.It’s important to note the recommended daily allowances mentioned are usually generalised and can change from person to person due to a number of different factors.

Ballyboughal Pitch & Putt Club are Fingal and East Meath Champions for the second year in a row. The competition held at Ring Common Pitch & Putt Club recently, was closely fought out throughout the Competition and up until the evening of the Final. It was Bllyboughal’s Team A that were victorious. Their Captain Jimmy Browne was delighted to accept the trophy from Fingal Mayor Councillor Seána Ó Rodaigh, who gave her support to the competition on the night.“It’s great to have teams from Fingal and East Meath taking part and for the Fingal Sports Office to provide support” said the Mayor “the social aspect of this competition is so important for all participants”.

The competition, now in its sixth year, was created by Ballyboughal Stalwart Ronnie Delaney, with the support of the Fingal Sports Development Officer, Caitriona Geraghty. The Fingal & East Meath Pitch Putt Championship was established back in 2015 to promote the game of Pitch & Putt in Fingal.“It has become a permanent fixture in the Fingal Sports Calendar, and this is in no small effort to the great work done by Ronnie Delaney”, said Caitríona Geraghty, Fingal Sports Development Officer” stated “even a Global Pandemic wouldn’t stop him from holding this competition”.
