Foróige thanks to Balbriggan Meals on Wheels

In the months of April to July Foroige Balbriggan Youth Services established three youth groups, two junior and one senior, from the Pinewood/ Castlelands area. During these months, due to government guidelines under the current restrictions all our youth work needed to take place outdoors. Balbriggan Meals and Wheels on Hampton Street generously offered the yard behind their premises as a base for the groups to meet weekly to take part in clubs and week long summer activity programmes.As a thank you Foroige Balbriggan worked with the young people in the area to create a vibrant mural and pollinator planters in the yard for the volunteers of Balbriggan Meals and Wheels to enjoy all year round.This project was part of a national week-long event of Foroige organised Youth Community Action events such as litter picks, painting and planting. Foróige is the leading youth organisation in Ireland and has been working with young people since 1952. Our purpose is to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their development and in the development of society. Fingal Jazz Impro and new Fingal Opera Group We set up Fingal Jazz Impro Group over two years ago and are currently looking for a rhythm section to compliment our line up. We are currently looking for Drums, Bass, Piano and Guitarist, and must be able to read a lead sheet (except the drummer). Rehearsals will re-commence in September on Thursday evenings in Balbriggan. How Budgeting Smarter Can Increase Your Funds By Dave Kavanagh Making a little time occasionally to go through your finances and budgeting, can be very rewarding and leave you with more money left over each month. A few practical tips: Carefully study 3 months’ bank statements. Make sure that you can account for every single trans-action. On a regular basis, I encounter people who have been paying for things that they should not be, direct debits they forgot to cancel.Make a detailed list for grocery shopping (and don’t shop while hungry). This leads to only buying what you actually need, a lower bill at the till and less throwing out of food gone off. Compare before you shop for larger items. Just because one store has a fridge you want reduced from €950 to €850 in their “Sale”, does not mean another store nearby that does not currently have a sale on, is not selling the same one for €799. Compare utility providers. Whether it’s electricity, gas, broadband, mobile phone service or similar, there can be substantial savings to be had by switching to better deals. Check when car/house insurance renew-als arrive. Don’t automatically accept a renewal premium without checking around. A few phone calls could save

you hundreds of euro.Review premiums on life cover/mortgage protection/serious illness cover. Especially if you arranged it directly with a bank or insurance company that could not compare. In over 20 years of helping people with their finances, I have never seen anyone NOT make savings by doing the above. Balbriggan & District Historical Society celebrates 40th Birthday

Our society was inaugurated on Thursday 16th July 1981 with the aim to promote an interest in the local history of the area through lectures, publications and exhibitions and also to establish a Museum in the Balbriggan District.The idea was born in the Balbriggan Library as a result of the keen interest and demand for local history information from the general public. Jim Walsh Librarian at the time became aware of the vast amount of material available in various areas like the National Library of Ireland, Gilbert Library and other Dublin City resources and sought to ensure that a lot of this could be made more accessible by public presentations, local exhibitions and ultimately publications specific to the historic area of Balbriggan and its general surrounding areas. Jim’s colleague Don Griffin worked closely with him and they were joined on the first committee by Michael Banim, Antonia Cassin, Pauline Corcoran, Marion Crane, Bernie

Healy, Eileen McKenna and last but not least May and Pat McKeon.The first ever presentation was ‘The Gaelic Placenames of Fingal’ by Brendan Scally and was followed by Bob Browne- The building of the Dublin-Drogheda Railway –1838-1844.Next was Christy Geraghty with illustrated lecture of Local Shipwrecks with particular reference to Sarah of Runcorn (1873) and Bell Hill (1875).In 1982 the Committee decided to hold an exhibition in the Grand Hotel and exceeded all expectations in terms of both participation and also attendance. We were delighted by the generosity of the populace who gladly donated many items of historical and familial interestMay McKeon remembers with fondness some of the talks on the ‘Balbriggan flyer’ Harry Reynolds, Balbriggan’s daughter Sinead Bean De Valera nee Flanagan and several talks covering the 1916 events in Fingal.Of particular pride to May is also the event organised

in 2017 to commemorate the hugely important Siege of Jadotville in the Congo in 1961 and the heroic efforts of Balbriggan native Pte Terence Joseph McMahon. One particular source of pride to Chairperson Brian Howley is the enormous effort that the Committee undertook to ensure the Centenary of the Sack of Balbriggan last year 2020 would have a fitting and appropriately respectful commemoration despite all of the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and our Seminar was posted online on Youtube for all to see and experience and there are still a small amount of the beautiful Commemorative Medals available.To anyone who has attended our talks, seminars, historical walkabouts, summer tours or our schools programmes Brian says that we thank you most sincerely for all of your support and we look forward to the next 40 years with great positivity and enthusiasm. ‘Go hard or go home’ mentality is outdated

By Ciaran Russell You will have heard this phrase ‘Go Hard or Go Home’ before but maybe this mentality is hindering your progress. How often you rest will directly impact on how you adapt to the training stimulus. By training too hard for a long period of time you run the risk of overtraining. This doesn’t have to mean a complete break from your exercise programme; it can be lighter sessions or different exercise than what you had been doing for the previous weeks. The reason rest is an overlooked part of training is because when you stress the

body for a number of weeks doing the same or very similar exercises or activity your nervous system won’t have a chance to play catch up and you will eventually crash. When this happens, you may feel very tired, you might experience some cold or flu symptoms and you may find your mood is off. These are typical signs that you need to take the foot off the gas. When you have a balanced training programme of intense exercise coupled with proper rest your body will have sufficient time to adapt and recover in a way that will positively benefit you and your training goals. A ‘go hard or go home’ or ‘no pain no gain’

mentality is outdated. Too many people go all in at the very beginning of a new fitness programme in order to race to the end to see the amazing results only to give up a few weeks later. But if you accept that fitness will be a lifetime endeavor you can plan your goals better and will enjoy your training more. If you take away one thing from this article make sure it’s this; rest & recovery is a prerequisite to exceptional performance. Safely Organising Confirmation and Communion parties By Siobhan O’Neill White Finally, Communions and Confirmations are set to go ahead. While Covid is still a worry when getting families together, with some clever organisation, you can ensure you all have an enjoyable and memorable day. Instead of having everyone together at the same time, you can split the party. For our daughter’s Communion, we had my husbands side of the family over for food, drinks and cake in our back garden from 2-4pm and then, my side of the family from 4.30-6.30pm. We got deli food and laid it out on a big table outside so that everyone could help themselves. This cut down on groups congregating in the house! Our daughters Communion dress was too small due to all the postponements, so we went back to Alexanders on Parnell St and they kindly swapped it for another. Your Guide to the EU Digital Covid Certificate Europe Direct Blanchardstown has published a series of video interviews on the topic of the EU Digital Covid Certificate.The aim of the interview series is to inform the public as to the purpose of the certificate and how it can be used to facilitate travel within the European Union. The interviews were organised by Europe Direct Manager Siobhan Walshe and recorded by Assistant Coordinator Barry O’Carroll.There were three interviewees in total:Barbara Nolan– Head of the European Commission Representation in Ireland.Barbara discussed the Digital Covid Certificate from an EU perspective including the purpose of the certificate and how it will facilitate travel within the EU. Ossian Smyth - Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform. Guide Dogs - Global Accessibility Awareness In our digital world it can be difficult for a person with low vision or blindness to use social media. ‘Jaws’ is a screen reader used by many including Guide Dog owner Tom O’Neill from Balbriggan, Co Dublin. In their video, Guide Dogs Australia highlight 3 important tips we should be familiar with. Tip 1: Good Punctuation. Use a full stop at the end of a sentence or phrase to indicate to ascreen reader the end of the text. Example: Irish Guide Dogs. When using a symbol such as @ in an email address, each separate word should be capitalised. Example: GuideDogsBalbriggan@gmail.com otherwise the screen reader sees a jumble of letters guidedogsbalbriggan@gmail.com. Tip 2: High Contrast. Some eye conditions distort a person’s view of things, so colours used are important. A yellow line on a white background can be very difficult to see but a yellow line on a black background is easier to see. Use geometric shapes on advertisements.Example: A large black arrow on a white background could be used to point out important information. In Australia they use large black and white arrows to indicate where the door on a tram is. We could do something similar in Ireland on buses, Luas, DART and trains. Tip 3: Be open and flexible. If approached by someone with low vision or blindness for help, listen to them and work out a solution to the problem together. Be open to new ideas. Event Programme is launched for Dublin Climate Action Week

The event programme and online registration have launched for Dublin’s first Climate Action Week (DCAW21), taking place from Monday 13th to Sunday 19th September 2021. A range of online and in-person climate action events are now open for registration at www.dublinclimateactionweek. ie. The broad range of events address the theme areas of Energy & Buildings, Transport, Flood Resilience, Nature Based Solutions, Resource Management and Citizen Engagement.The recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Climate Change 2021 Report, categorically underlines the need for urgent action on climate change by all sectors of society. One

of the highlights of the DCAW21 Programme includes a Climate Action Panel Discussion with the Chief Executives of the four Dublin local authorities, taking place online on Tuesday 14th September 2021 at 10am. A number of online film screenings are planned, and outdoor climate film screenings will take place at venues across Dublin. There are also a range of family events, including workshops for children and guided walks in public parks. The Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, the Mayors of South Dublin County Council and Fingal County Council, and the Lord Mayor of Dublin City Council, have jointly stated in

Super Cereal Bars “Back to work, school or college after the Summer break may mean back to routine but it doesn’t have to mean back to bad habits! Autumn is the season for change and what better way to start the new school year than on a healthy note. A lot of cereal bars in shops are loaded with sugar which give an instant energy high but this is rapidly followed by an energy crash and cravings for more sweet foods. These cereal bars below are tasty but very satisfying and filling. Not to mention they are so simple to make and contain only 5 ingredients which are very commonplace in many homes.

Ingredients

Makes 15 bars • 500g muesli (No added sugar) • 200mls milk • 100g nut butter (Peanut/almond/ cashew etc.) • 4 tablespoons honey • 150g dark chocolate to coat on top

Method 1. Make a well in the centre of the muesli in a mixing bowl. Add the milk and using a knife make an ‘X’ in the mixture, mixing the milk into the muesli. 2. Add the honey and nut butter and combine together. 3. Spread onto a baking tray with grease proof paper and freeze for 4

hours or overnight. 4. Just before removing from the freezer, melt the dark chocolate and then spread it on top of the mixture. 5. Place the mixture back in the freezer for another hour. Make sure it is quite solid. Then cut it up and gobble up! Try store some in a lunchbox in the freezer so that they last the week!! Broadway came to Balbriggan for summer concert series

Broadway came to Balbriggan as the North Dublin town is hosting a number of international stage stars. Tenor Morgan Crowley and singer and actress Yassmin Alers are among the internationally acclaimed artists who joined the Irish Institute of Music and Song’s summer series of concerts. Award-winning Crowley took to the stage on (August 6) for an evening of classic songs and stories, with New York-born Alers performing a concert full of musical favourites also recently..“For the first time ever, Balbriggan will also welcome internationally renowned stars from the stages of Broadway and the West End, as well as our own Wexford Opera House and the National Concert Hall,” said IIMS CEO, Michael Dawson. Alers is awaiting the release of Spielberg’s West Side Story movie, where she performed on screen during the infamous dance between the two rival gangs. She has arrived at the IIMS as the fourth artist in residence, following Paul Oakley Stovall, Nikhil Saboo and Eurovision singer Lesley Roy. She will spend her time in residence providing educational workshops, mentorship to local and national organisations.The summer series at the IIMS venue in Church Street, Balbriggan, sees weekly events staged each Friday and Saturday, running until the end of September. Balbriggan Boys win Junior ‘A’ Cricket Trophy

Balbriggan Boys recently won the Leinster Junior A trophy for the first time in their history, beating Pembroke in the final by six wickets. Batting first Pembroke got 117, with Bruce Whaley top scoring with 35 before retiring.Hassan Shahid claimed four wickets, while Jesse Makris also bowled well, conceding just 16 off his four overs.Hassan was also to the fore with

the bat, as he made 38 before retiring, with Jesse Makris enjoying the final, making 32.Skipper Fionn Bannister and Tom Harford brought home the win with Tom hitting the winning runs in the penultimate over.Jim Bennett and Martin Russell did the trophy presentations, praising “a great game played in good spirits’.
