Fingal Arts hosts special showcase with Irish Aphasia Theatre

Fingal Arts Office has presented a very special showcase of work developed as part of a groundbreaking initiative with Irish Aphasia Theatre (IAT).Aphasia is a condition that can occur at any stage of life through acquired brain injury or stroke that affects a person’s ability to verbally communicate, and it may be accompanied by many other physical challenges.Led by local Dublin 15 artist Grainne Hallahan, Irish Aphasia Theatre provides individuals living with the condition the opportunity to explore the range of communication available to them through theatre. The workshops took place at Blanchardstown Library and Draiocht Arts Centre since 2018. Workshops were delivered by professional acting,

movement and voice specialists and participants were empowered to tell their stories through drama. Irish Aphasia Theatre is an experimental model in an early stage of its development. Since its formation, the project has been nominated for the Excellence in Local Government Awards 2019, featured on RTE’s Drivetime, invited to the CRC to demonstrate the benefits of the method in the healthcare environment and also gathered interest from the Arts in Health sector. IAT hosted a showcase evening at Draiocht where Grainne led her Aphasia workshop with an invited audience, some of whom were family and friends of the participants who performed new work written and devised by their experience on

the programme to an emotional and rapturous response.Brian Brophy delivered a one-man show on the theme of his love of swimming which has been a feature of his new life post stroke but also reveals the barriers to access simple things when you are limited in your mobility. His performance was supported by the Irish Aphasia cast who brought the story to life.Irish Aphasia Theatre workshops will continue in 2020 and Grainne Hallahan has been supported to develop her own theatre piece Transitions through the Arts Council’s Artist in the Community Scheme for Fingal where she will explore further diverse and marginalised communities through her method of theatrical expression.

Fingal County Council named “Local Authority of the Year”

Fingal County Council has been named Local Authority of the Year at the InBusiness Recognition Awards 2019.The award was accepted by Deputy Mayor of Fingal Cllr Tom Kitt at the awards ceremony held in the Westbury Hotel in Dublin. Cllr Kitt said: “I am delighted to accept the InBusiness Award for Best County Council. A key part of our mission statement is to make Fingal the best place in Ireland to do business in and winning this award for the second successive year indicates that the work we are doing on the ground is having a positive effect on the business community.” Cllr Kitt added: “There is a growing recognition amongst all stakeholders of the

importance of local authorities and our ability to get things done. We are the closest government agency to the citizen, and business, and are therefore best placed to deliver services directly to them.”Fingal County Council Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly said: “It is a great honour to receive this accolade in recognition of our efforts to improve the quality of services we deliver to all our stakeholders. Part of our vision for Fingal is to make it a good place to do business in, so it is particularly pleasing to be recognised for our efforts in this area.”

Irish Traditional Music Classes & Sessions

Slow Session Leithinis CCE Donabate Portrane Traditional Music night in Donabate Parish Hall.

We at Leithinis CCE Donabate/Porrane run classes every Monday evening in DPETNS Beaverstown Rd. We also have Slow Sessions for our students, in Donabate Parish Hall, on some Fridays. In Keelings we have regular Sessions for experienced musicians, all under Denis Stack our very experienced button accordion player.Our teachers are led by the renowned piper & now local man Eamonn Galldubh.This term we have a new Tin Whistle Teacher, (our last teacher also excellent has emigrated) and local girl Edel Dempsey has agreed to come on to the teaching team. Edel was recently married in the Shoreline Hotel and next day she entertained spellbound guests to a few beautiful old Irish tunes.Regarding our classes anyone from Fingal and further afield is most welcome.

Fingal County Council part of Young Scientist Exhibition

Fingal Libraries, Digital Fingal and Smart Dublin teams at their stall at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition

Fingal County Council were delighted to take part in Ireland’s most exciting festival of science and technology recently.The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, now in its 56th year, was a fun-filled spectacle of creativity and inspiration, offering something for people of all ages.Fingal County Council showcased innovative digital initiatives that look to improve the way we live and work in Fingal – from using drones to prevent illegal dumping, rolling out smart street furniture that can charge your phone and give you free Wi-Fi and developing

interactive maker spaces to enhance creativity and innovation.The Fingal County Council stand was in the World of Science and Technology exhibition hall. At the stand, attendees could create some wearable technology, play with robotics, learn about the many digital services from Fingal Libraries, charge their devices at the Fingal smart bench and take part in a 3D virtual reality experience of the City. The Digital Fingal team, Fingal Libraries, Smart Dublin and Dublin Maker were all on hand to showcase Fingal’s Digital projects

and services and to answer any questions from attendees.At the heart of the Exhibition there were 1,100 students representing 244 schools across the island of Ireland who competed for the coveted title of BT Young Scientist & Technologist(s) of the Year 2020. Last year Adam Kelly, a student from Skerries Community College was awarded the overall prize for his project entitled “Optimizing the Simulation of General Quantum Circuits”, which explored efficient ways to mathematically model quantum computers.

It’s always nice to make the effort for someone who means a lot to you for Valentine’s, by cooking or baking for them.Or perhaps with lent coming up, one last indulgence might be in mind. This is a decadent and rich dessert. Quite simple to make and uses minimal ingredients. I like it with a dollop of vanilla yogurt and grated chocolate as in the picture. Ingredients: • • •

1.Preheat a fan oven to 180’c. 2.Blitz the dates and any remaining liquid in a food processor/blender. 3.Melt the dark chocolate carefully in a saucepan over a gentle heat and stir. Once it is all melted, remove from the heat and stir in the blitzed up dates. 4.Mix in half of the ground almonds and

2 eggs. Then add the rest of the ground almonds, the final egg and vanilla extract and combine well together. 5.Pour the mixture into a nonstick or pre-lined with parchment paper baking pan and bake in the oven at 180’c for 20 minutes.
