Drogheda & District Chamber held their 15th Annual Drogheda Business Excellence Awards in the CityNorth Hotel, Gormanston on Saturday 23rd of November for the fourth year. Win for Flemington in Pride of Place Awards There was great success for Fingal at the IPB Pride of Place Awards as Flemington, Balbriggan was awarded ‘Best Urban Neighbourhood’ and the residents of the Whitestown Estate, Dublin 15 were runners-up in the ‘Best Housing Estate’ category at the Awards in Kilkenny on Saturday evening. 900 representatives from counties across Ireland gathered in the Lyrath Estate Hotel for the Annual Pride of Place awards, hosted by Kilkenny County Council. The neighbourhood of Flemington in north-west Balbriggan is one of the fastest growing new communities in Ireland and the new Community Centre in Flemington is the neighbourhood hub where many new clubs and groups have emerged in recent years.The judges were highly impressed with the rich variety of active clubs in Flemington providing an inclusive environment for all who wished to participate in their activities. They were provided with an excellent presentation on the work of the various groups and saw for themselves the truly pioneering efforts to reach out to

Balbriggan Historical members with the Commemorative Calendar

At the launch of their Sack of Balbriggan Commemorative Calendar the Committee of Balbriggan & District Historical Society had an opportunity to look back at another busy and successful year and forward to 2020. Brian Howley took over as Chairperson from Anne Collins for what will be a very busy year for the Society as they plan for the important commemoration of the Sack of Balbriggan by the Black and Tans in 1920. The Commemorative Calendar features pictures kindly donated by Jim Glennon from his treasured family collection, including one of his grandfather standing outside his ruined pub, now the Milestone. Some of the highlights of a busy year were the tours of Bremore Castle during the Balbriggan Summerfest and the Day trip to Cavan Museum

in August. Our talks programme commenced in March with a talk to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Seamus Ennis called “The Wonderful work of Seamus Ennis Folk Music Collector” by Sean Corcoran.. In April Aidan J Herron spoke about “Ardgillan Castle Revealed” . In August Dr. William Murphy,lecturer in modern Irish history at Dublin City University, presented “From Creating a Counter-State: Establishing and Building Dáil Éireann 1919”. In August for Heritage week we helped organise the Heritage Network Pastimes and Past Times Heritage week event in Malahide. In October we welcomed the students from Loreto Secondary School who shared their research into the Sack of Balbriggan. Then Eithne McDermott gave

a fantastic talk on Clann na Poblachta and the Interparty Government. Eithne who has taught in NUIG spoke about the Interparty government and Clann na Poblachta who included Sean McBride and Dr Noel Browne,about the power of the Church and the poverty of the 1940’s. Our activities in 2019 also inculded a Quiz, school visits and guided walks, mainly led by our long standing member Jim Walsh. We look forward to a very busy year in 2020 as we plan to inform Balbriggan residents about the Sack of Balbriggans as we commemorate it in a meaningful and inclusive manor. Commemorative Calendar - Sack of Balbriggan 2020 is a very special year for our Society and Balbriggan as we prepare to commemorate The Sack of Balbriggan by the Black and Tans in September 1920. To prepare for this and as a momento of the year we have published a calendar and you can have one for the great price of â‚Ź10. The Big Sports Quiz 2019 in Balbriggan

Children from 3rd class in Balbriggan Educate Together National School and Bracken Educate Together National School took part in the annual Big Sports Quiz in Balbriggan Library on Wednesday 11th December.The Big Sports Quiz is the culmination of a programme run by Fingal Country Council’s Sports Office and Fingal Libraries, which promotes children’s literacy and encourages them to be physically active.This year, the schoolchildren took part in Fingal’s Sports Conditioning programme every week for seven weeks and read two sports-related books - ‘Get out and Play Rugby’ by Rod Smith and ‘Fintan’s Fifteen’ by Alan Nolan. Mayor of Fingal Cllr. Eoghan O’Brien was on hand to award the Certificates to the children and commented: “I was delighted to present the Certificates today at the Big Sports Quiz and see the enthusiasm of the children on the day. This programme is an excellent way to harness this enthusiasm to ensure that reading and engaging in sporting activity is seen as fun and becomes a lifelong choice for these children.”County Librarian Betty Boardman said, “Fingal County Council’s Big Sports Quiz is designed to get children moving and reading. It’s a great partnership between the Sports Office and the Libraries Department and most importantly it’s a fun way for children to keep fit and to enjoy reading”.Principal Sports Officer Marion Brown said, “This successful partnership, now in its fifth year,shows children the value of reading and taking part in a programme of physical activity. When we help children establish healthy lifestyles, they will carry the benefits forward for the rest of their lives”.Authors Alan Nolan and Rod Smith were the quizmasters on the day in Balbriggan Library. Teams answered questions on their books and on the ‘Sporting Facts’ workbook from the Sports Office, which looks at the physical, social and mental benefits of sport. 8

€100,000 for community sports initiatives

€100,000 in funding for sporting initiatives

Fingal County Council has secured €100,000 in funding for sporting initiatives benefiting traditionally underserved communities. Community Sports and Physical Activity Hubs are a major element of the funding, with $45,000 allocated for Tyrellstown/Mulhuddart and €35,000 for Balbriggan.The Hubs provide information, support and advice on a wide range of sports and physical activities to bring local people together and provide a home for local clubs and sports organisations.€10,000 is allocated to the Youth Leadership project involving specialised Sports Leadership training to produce trained, responsible and confident volunteers who can help to deliver sport and recreation initiatives within their community.The

programme has the potential to impact on both early school dropout rates in disadvantaged areas and dropout rates from sport within the targeted age group.€10,000 is also allocated for the Sports Inclusion Disability Programme, which aims to reduce barriers to sports participation for people with a disability through provision of equipment and minor infrastructure.This initiative will help people with a disability to engage with their community, develop their social networks, and encourage them to develop their skills, talents and abilities.Mayor of Fingal Cllr Eoghan O’Brien said: “I am delighted to see that Fingal’s sports programmes will receive assistance from the Dormant Accounts Fund.“Sport and physical activity should be for everyone to enjoy,

and the Fingal Sports Office programmes are exciting steps towards this.”Fingal County Council Director of Services for Housing and Community Margaret Geraghty said: “On behalf of the Council’s Sports Office I welcome the provision of funding for these important projects.”The funding for Community Sports and Physical Activity Hubs, Youth Leadership, and Sports Inclusion Disability initiatives will go far towards improving the health, wellbeing and social cohesion of communities across Fingal.”The funding will be administered by Sport Ireland, and aligns closely with the National Sports Policy and the National Physical Activity Plan.

Balbriggan Branch Dyslexia Association of Ireland

The Balbriggan Branch of the Dyslexia Association of Ireland was established by parents of children with Dyslexia. The branch is affiliated to DAI and Branch members are required to be up-to-date DAI members.The Balbriggan Branch is run by a voluntary committee consisting of parents of children attending the Workshop, in partnership with the workshop teaching staff. gmail.com.The weekly after school workshop is held on Tuesday evenings in St. Mologa’s NS, Balbriggan, Co. Dublin.All Children wishing to enrol must have a full psychological assessment including a diagnosis of dyslexia which must be made available to the Workshop Co-ordinator to establish whether the Workshop is suitable for a child or not.All teachers at the Workshop are dedicated fully qualified teachers who have had special training in helping students with dyslexia. Our aim is to provide specialised classes for children with dyslexia and to also provide support and information for their parents and families.The Dyslexia Association of Ireland runs Dyslexia Courses for Primary School Teachers.

Places on these courses are limited so early application is advisable, and we run these courses several times each year, in different locations, in response to demand.These courses are offered to qualified primary level teachers who are registered or eligible for registration with the Teaching Council. The course may be of particular relevance to Learning Support and Resource Teachers. At the end of the course, teachers will have an understanding of what dyslexia is, how it can be identified and how it can be supported in classrooms and schools.Courses can be booked online through the Associations website and the next Dublin Teachers course will run on Friday 7th Feb and Saturday 8th Feb.

New Year Super Fish Supper Following the festive period, some of us may not want to see turkey or ham on the menu for quite a while! With the new year comes new years resolutions and a lot of people make goals to enhance their health. Fish is full of lots of nutritional goodness. Yet, despite being an island, our intakes of fish in Ireland are quite low. Some people say it’s the smell that fish may leave in the kitchen that turns them off or that they’re just not sure how to make it tasty. But the great news is that fish is quite easy and quick to cook. And a top tip to get rid of any unwanted odours is to place 1/2 lemon in water in a cup (cut side up) and heat in the oven/microwave for 4-6minutes. Burning a nice scented candle also helps! Ingredients: Serves 2 • • • • •

2 Salmon fillets 200g Tenderstem broccoli 250g Asparagus 2 teaspoons black pepper 1 tablespoon rapeseed oil

2 cloves garlic 1 tablespoon minced parsley leaves Juice of 1/2 of a lemon Sweet potato chips:

260g sweet potatoes 1 tablespoon rapeseed oil 1 teaspoon chilli powder 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon black pepper Method:

1. Preheat oven to 200’c. 2.The sweet potato chips take longer to cook, so do these first. Wash, peel and slice the sweet potato into chips. 3. Place the remaining ingredients for the sweet potato chips in a large bowl and stir well to combine. Then add the sliced sweet potatoes and coat in this mixture. 4. Place the sweet potato onto a baking tray and bake in the oven for 40-45minutes at 180’c. Turn them halfway through baking to

ensure they cook evenly. 5. Place the salmon onto a baking tray that is pre-greased or lined with parchment paper. 6. Mix the lemon juice, parsley leaves, oil and garlic together and brush the top and sides of the salmon with this mixture. Bake in the oven at 180’c for 12-15minutes (depending on the thickness of the salmon). When cooked through, the salmon will look opaque and flake easily with a fork. 7.Brush the remainder of the mixture from step 6 onto the broccoli and asparagus on a foil lined baking tray and sprinkle with black pepper. Bake in the oven at 180’c for 10-15minutes or until tender. 8.Serve up with a lemon wedge. The cold and stormy weather on arrival was soon forgotten as we received a warm welcome from our hosts.The girls from Navan joined our group and mixed in well with the Balbriggan crew before the games began which were played in great spirit. Santa himself was in Ashbourne at the U7’s-U9’s blitz so Mrs Claus made the short journey from the North Pole to Cavan and gave each of the girls a much appreciated woolly hat along with some

other treats.On the final whistle everyone was welcomed into the clubhouse where a delicious hot meal was provided before the girls travelled home after a great, festive day of rugby.
