Share the love by not sharing Covid 19 Well what can we say,tighter Covid 19 restrictions have come into force in Dublin City and county in an effort to stem rising levels of the virus.The new rules came into force in the city and the surrounding county recently and all because some of us became too far too complacent about following the HSE advice. For the next few weeks, people will be discouraged from leaving the city and county unless for essential reasons.The one plus in all this is we should shop locally and ensure local jobs. However we need to strictly following the Government rules. Once again we are being asked to work from home where possible and only to make essential journeys on public transport. In Dublin city visitors to private homes and gardens should be limited to a maximum number of six from one other household.There are to be no organised indoor gatherings and outdoor gatherings are to be up to a maximum of 15. Restaurants and pubs that had been serving food will only be allowed to cater outdoors, to a maximum of 14 people, or provide a take-away service. Maybe this is the sharp shock we all needed to remind us about the dangers of not wearing face coverings, not regularly washing our hands thoroughly and not keep our distance when meeting others. So, lets all pull together now as we did before and turn this around quickly, get back to as near normal a society as possible and stay safe. We all have mothers, children, spouses, partners and family we love and do not want to see ill, so please, please lets share the love by not sharing the Covid 19 virus and hopefully we can flatten the curve again soon. That way we can have a quality of life once again.Stay Safe and keep supporting our HSE workers, our local shopping outlets and most of all each other. The Locals team.

Foróige Balbriggan Needs YOU! Foróige Balbriggan, the Youth Development Organisation, are working to build a team of committed adult volunteers to help make fun, developmental opportunities accessible for as many young people as possible in the wider Balbriggan area, through a network of volunteer led Foroige Clubs and groups. If you are over the age of 18, have an hour or two to spare each week and would like to involve yourself in volunteering in your community, maybe this is for you. Why not lead a Foróige Club with other adults?These clubs are about youth development: We need close to a weekly commitment for about 2 hours, usually from September to May. So why not mentor a young person. Foróige’s Big Brother Big Sister Programme matches a trained adult volunteer with a young person who would benefit from having a mentor in their lives. There is a commitment of a weekly meeting with the young person for about an hour or two over the course of one year. There are also specialist roles with young people. If you have skills or experience with vulnerable young people we may have opportunities for you to work jointly with Foróige staff in groups focused on particular issues. Volunteer in a Foroige Juniors Club/ in a Youth Café / in an Interest Club. These clubs are variations on the Foróige Club described above. Juniors Clubs are for 10 to 12 year olds, cafés are aimed at older teenagers, and interest clubs cover single interest clubs. If administration is your thing, or you have an expertise in IT for example, that you might want to put to good use in your community, then we just may have an opening for you. Message from Balbriggan Library- We are Open!

We are pleased to announce that Balbriggan Library reopened on the 14th September. We are all delighted to be back and looking forward to welcoming you back through the doors again! As with most public spaces the library will look and operate slightly differently than before. We now have a maximum number of people that we can allow in the building at any one time so there may be queues on occasion. We also ask that everyone wear a face covering unless they have a medical reason not to. Children need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times including while they are in the building. We have a drop box just outside the library doors if anyone is just returning items. We also ask that you plan your visit to the library as much as possible in order to limit the time you spend in the building. We ask for your understanding and cooperation at this time. Councillors approve €260,000 in grants to community groups in Fingal Councillors voted to approve substantial funding grants of just over €260,000 to 218 community groups and projects in Fingal at the monthly meeting of Fingal County Council on Monday. The grants will support communities in restarting activities and events that had been delayed due to COVID-19.This funding is set to go to groups and projects as follows:Covid-19 Grants: €74,424 granted to 76 groups, Youth Sports Grants: €115,200 granted to 96 groups, Summer Projects: €32,300 granted to 18 projects and Community Activity & Arts Grants: €38,331granted to 28 groups.The money will support specific groups and projects in Fingal communities in responding to the specific challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and will help them to hold events safely.Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. David Healy said after the approval: “It was important that this funding was approved as it provides the necessary supports for many community groups and projects across Fingal that have been hit hard by Covid-19. AnnMarie Farrelly, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, said: “The funding that was approved on Monday night will help community groups to start to organise holding events and activities again, which had been postponed or cancelled over the past few months due to Covid-19 restrictions.This funding will go towards planning these activities in a safe way to continue to adhere to the guidelines while allowing the communities to restart their lives..”Margaret Geraghty, Director of Housing and Community for Fingal County Council said: “The past few months have been difficult times for communities and helping our citizens, young and old, to get involved in activities and events again is very important for overall mental health especially as we are facing into the winter months. To qualify for a mortgage, you must also qualify for cover By Dave Kavanagh Every year, I see examples of people who have done all the right things in preparing for a mort-gage application, saved regularly to build a deposit, maintained stable employment, avoided tak-ing out new loans, conduct their current accounts efficiently etc. but sadly, donâ€™t get to proceed with their house/apartment purchase (certainly not in the time frame they wanted to) because they cannot get their mortgage protection life cover accepted. So what would cause this to happen? When you apply for any form of life cover, it is underwritten based on your current and past medi-cal history. If someone has had any adverse medical conditions, if deemed serious enough, it could prevent cover being granted. More commonly, someone may have been recommended by their GP or consultant to have certain tests done, but they never got around to it. This would usually prompt a life company to postpone a decision until the tests are done and satisfactory results are available. Depending on the type of tests, this could take months to get sorted. For these reasons, anybody planning to apply for a mortgage should research how they

will be underwritten for mortgage pro-tection at an early stage, particularly if they are concerned that a past medical issue could be a problem. In the current climate regarding Covid-19, many are even getting their mortgage protec-tion in place early and extending the term so that they are certain of having cover in place, when it is time to draw down the home loan. Once cover is in place, any new medical issues that arise will not be relevant.

Applications now open for financial assistance for Festivals in 2021 Fingal County Council’s Events Unit is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for financial assistance for Festivals and Events taking place in 2021. Applications from groups and organisations seeking financial assistance from Fingal County Council’s Events Section for Festivals and Events taking place in 2021 will close on Tuesday, 15 December 2020, at 3pm. All applications should include a Covid compliance plan in adherence with current government guidelines. Applications will be accepted for existing and/or new events or festivals which animate public spaces in creative and innovative ways, and which are focused on developing measurable tourism impacts in the County. FCC and O’Dwyers pave way for move to Bremore Park

AnnMarie Farrelly, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, completes the signing of contracts during a virtual meeting which was attended by Mayor of Fingal, Cllr David Healy, local councillors, representatives of O’Dwyers GAA Club and Council officials.

Fingal County Council and O’Dwyers GAA Club have completed the signing of contracts which will allow the club to proceed with its planned move to a new state-of-the-art facility at Bremore Regional Park in Balbriggan.O’Dwyers have sold their facility at Hamlet Lane to the Council and taken a long-term lease for a 10 acre site on the northern boundary of Bremore Regional Park which it will now proceed to develop into a state-of-the-art sporting facility.The Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Ann Marie Farrelly, completed the contract process when she put pen to paper during a virtual meeting involving club officials, council staff and councillors from the Balbriggan Local Electoral Area. The meeting was held online to comply with Government measures in relation to COVID-19.“The move to Bremore Regional Park will allow O’Dwyers to put in place the foundations for the next 100 years of its history and will also assist the club with the work it is doing for the youngest population in Ireland,” said Mayor of Fingal, Cllr David Healy. In 2018, members of O’Dwyers agreed to move to a new facility at Bremore Regional Park and to sell their current ground at Hamlet Lane to the Council to facilitate road improvements and new housing in the area. The club are planning to develop a new clubhouse, sports hall, sports pitches, parking and training areas at Bremore which will be in alignment with the council’s overall vision for the park. Liam Howley, Chairman of O’Dwyers GAA Club, said: “It has taken a long time and a lot of hard work to get to this point and are delighted that we can now plan to commence construction and deliver this fantastic project.” A range of sporting facilities will be provided including the already completed 3G All-weather sports pitch as well as at least six additional public grass pitches.

Share your sporting memorabilia for a major Europe-Wide project EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum asks Irish people at home and abroad to dig out their sporting memorabilia and contribute to Europeana Sport, a European project on the culture and history of sport.People can share their stories and memorabilia online or work with a volunteer via the phone or email to tell their stories and send in their photos of past medals, jerseys, triumphs, programmes, hurley sticks, rugby boots, trophies, diaries etc. Those playing GAA abroad are particularly invited to participate, submitting photos of their teams, strips, community events and inter-country games.EPIC would particularly welcome hearing from anyone who has represented their parish, county or country abroad. Europeana Sport – Ireland’s Stories will show the richness and diversity of sporting history in Ireland and amongst the Irish overseas through the collection of stories and memorabilia from fans, players, enthusiasts, past sporting heroes and heroines.These memories will be juxtaposed with those of other countries across Europe showing our similarities and differences but through the decades our mutual love of sport in all its forms.Under the common banner of Europeana Sport - Ireland’s Stories, six coordinating partners from across Ireland - EPIC the Irish Emigration Museum, Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI), European Expo2020, Hunt Museum, University of Limerick Conference & Sports Campus and Fethard Horse Country Experience (FHCE) - are each undertaking campaigns focusing on specific sports including camogie, Gaelic football, horse-racing, fishing, martial arts, tag rugby, rowing. Despite the challenges posed by Covid-19 restrictions Balbriggan and District Historical Society were determined to commemorate the Centenary of the Sack of Balbriggan in an appropriate manner. We would like to thank Fr McNamara for celebrating Mass on our request in honour of the Lawless and Gibbons families and all those who suffered. Following the Mass on Sunday September 20th Brian Howley, Chairman laid a wreath on behalf of the Society at the Plaque on Bridge Street with a colour party from the scouts and bugler Martin McEvoy joining us to honour the occasion and then the members of the Society Committee continued to Balscaddan Cemetery where we laid a wreath at the grave of Seamus Lawless and Sean Gibbons. Although without an audience we were delighted to record our Sack of Balbriggan Commemorative Seminar on Friday, with Diarmaid Ferriter as our keynote speaker. The other talks were by our own Jim Walsh relating the key events of the Sack. Giving the RIC perspective on events was visiting speaker Jim Herlihy while Frank Whearity spoke about the experiences of a particular family who lived on Clonard Street and Brendan Matthews looked at effect on the then thriving town of Balbriggan. We had planned a photographic exhibition in the Bracken Court Hotel of photos given to us by Jim Glennon from his grandfather’s collection but arguably they reached a bigger audience as we displayed them in shopfronts around the town where there was also a display of Sack of Balbriggan related artwork and this generated huge interest. If you would like a lasting reminder of the Centenary our beautiful commemorative medal is available to purchase on www.balbrigganhistory.com . The medal depicts a scene from the Sack of Balbriggan and comes with a 4-page booklet containing a short history of the Sack. It’s Time to ‘Run Your Town’ Fingal County Council’s Sports Office, in partnership with the Fingal Orienteers Club and the Irish Orienteering Association and with support from Sport Ireland through the Dormant Accounts Fund, have organised an innovative orienteering initiative called ‘Run Your Town’.The programme which is open to all will take place from September 23 – 30 and the only requirement is that you own a phone.It involves participants running a short, medium or long course around their town in a specific order using a map which is downloaded onto your phone. While there is a leader board to compare times, the main objective of the project is to introduce people to orienteering and get people active in their community. For this initial phase of the project five towns have been selected; Balbriggan, Castleknock, Lusk, Malahide and Tyrrelstown. It is hoped that should there be sufficient interest more areas around Fingal could be mapped with orienteering courses to allow people the opportunity to try out orienteering in their locality.Fingal County Council Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly said: “We have all seen the benefits of the involvement in physical activity over the last few months and it’s great to see a project developed as a result of the Covid pandemic. It demonstrates Fingal’s commitment to working within the community to provide important health and wellbeing initiatives in a fun way.”Director of Services, Housing & Community, Margaret Geraghty, said: “The Run Your Town project is a great initiative by Fingal County Council’s Sports Office. The Sports Office has worked hard over the last number of months coming up with new and innovative ways to keep people active and engaged in sport throughout the pandemic. We are celebrating our Ruby Anniversary by giving back

Thank you to a very special young man, Oisín Russell; who thought of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind as his chosen charity when he wanted to make a donation from his 1st Holy Communion. Our puppy raiser Anne Mulligan, and 11 month old puppy in training Yarrow were honoured to meet him. Maith thú Oisín, agus go raibh míle maith agat.

From Tom and Breege O’Neill Tom and Breege O’Neill, guide dog owners from Balbriggan, are a unique couple who on the 6th of September celebrated their 40th Ruby wedding anniversary.In lieu of presents they decided they wanted to give back to 3 charities that mean a lot to them.Balbriggan Cancer Care - As many of you know Breege has been battling cancer since March 2016 and the support she has got from the team there has been invaluable. Meeting ‘the Monday girls’ through Balbriggan cancer care has helped the difficult journey by bringing ina lovely social side. Cancer has touched many of our lives if not directly, indirectly through family and friends. To have a local group of cancer battlers to make you feel welcome and loved when you need it most is vital and this is what Balbriggan Cancer Care have done for Breege. Teen and Tween working together through Covid

The past few months have been so difficult for all of us and one group who have really struggled are our tween and teens. My own children struggled with their mental health with now, as cases grow and restrictions are being increased for Dublin again, who knows what lies ahead. We decided to give each of our children projects, to give them a sense of control in this unsettling time.For our son, who just started fifth year, a place to study and do homework is important. With 3 sisters to annoy him, his bedroom was the obvious choice. He picked a black grain wood desk and matching wardrobe from lovefurniture.ie. Due to Covid, we had to assemble it ourselves and this took him and his Dad 2 days which was great, because it gave him a sense of achievement when it was finished! Our 15yr old daughter really missed her friends and playing sports. We allowed her a TV and said she could redesign her bedroom, to give her a boost. She went with a mix of Rose Gold

metallic paint and pale pink from Murtaghs of Drogheda. For the bed, she wanted a grown-up room. She helped put the bed together and made up her bed with accessories she picked herself. If we do have more restrictions coming, she will have a nice bedroom to be cooped up in! With our two youngest, 8 & 12yrs, we decided to let them loose on the garden furniture! We had some shabby patio furniture that really needed a lick of paint and we said they could pick the colour paint from Arro Balbriggan (who had a brilliant delivery service during lockdown!) and thatâ€™s how we ended up with a Cherry Blossom & Bright Pink table & chairs! They were delighted with the end result and in fairness, it does look a lot better now! Already we are working on the living room and the youngest are heavily involved! There are lots of other little home dĂŠcor recommendations on our mams.ie website so hop on over for inspiration and ideas!
