“Our Balbriggan” €20m plan revealed

Balbriggan is set to be transformed thanks to a €20 boost that has/will be secured by the residents of the town following a wide-ranging public consultation process. ‘Our Balbriggan’ saw huge engagement from more than a quarter of the local townspeople as they gave their views in a process and resultant which was unveiled recently. This included over a quarter of the young people in the town A Balbriggan Leadership Group, chaired by Professor Brian MacCraith, President, Dublin City University, had prepared samples of different initiatives, including transforming the Main Street and connecting it to a reimagined Harbour area. In the scheme, derelict properties in the area will be renovated, there wll be green areas an event space and access to the access to the River Bracken will be improved. The habour area will be refurbished into modern leisureway to attract visitors and locals alike with a conection to Quay Street which will feature a linear park along the bank of the river before joining up with Main Street and a quality civic and meeting space. ‘We couldn’t have dreamed of this level of response, with a huge section of the community getting involved to imagine the possibilities in a transformed Balbriggan and ‘We now have a strong set of priorities which will transform the town, realising its full potential.,’ said Professor MacCraith. 4

The Importance of Telling the Truth About your Finances By Dave Kavanagh There are some circumstances when people can be inclined to slightly embellish the truth, or exaggerate details, or omit facts that are not beneficial. This should never be the case when it comes to applying for insurance, particularly for life cover, serious illness cover or income protection. The contract that is formed when someone takes out such cover is based on the details that were provided at application stage. This usually includes a signed declaration by the person(s) applying for the cover, that they have read and understand all of the questions and that they understand the importance of withholding material facts (facts that would likely influence an underwriter in their decision to accept a proposal.) The idea being, that the clients agree to pay a regular premium and in return, the life company agree to pay out a sum of money in certain eventualities. In Ireland, life companies pay out hundreds of millions of euro every year. In fact, about 95% of life and serious illness claims are paid out. So why are there some claims that are denied? In some cases, it’s simply a lack of understanding of what is actually covered (like someone with serious illness cover claiming for a condition that is not covered, like a broken arm). But in other cases, they are denied for “non-disclosure”. This is due to incorrect information being submitted at proposal stage. In the event of a claim, one of the first things a life company does, is write to the life

assured’s GP to get a report of their medical history leading up to the date of proposal. If there are relevant details that were not disclosed, it may be grounds for refusal, particularly if the information at the time would have resulted in the application being denied. This is why it is crucially important to listen carefully to the questions being asked and make sure to answer correctly and fully. The life companies send the clients a copy of the questions that were asked and also the answers that were given. It is important to read through these answers to make sure you are satisfied that they are correct and that you haven’t neglected to mention a material fact. It is wise to also keep a copy of your questions and answers so there will be no doubt what information was given at the time. Quite simply, once all questions have been answered fully and honestly at proposal stage, there is never any worry of a claim being denied, giving you the peace of mind that the cover you pay for, is in place. Specsavers Balbriggan supporting Vision Aid

Specsavers Balbriggan has been collecting old and unused glasses over the last few months to support the work carried out by Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) and have recently announced that they have donated over 2000 frames. VAO’s mission is to help people who suffer from vision related disabilities in under-served areas, such as countries like Ghana and Zambia. Specsavers Balbriggan encouraged people to visit them in-store and donate any old, unused glasses for this worthy cause. Since the store opened seven years ago, staff and customers have donated thousands of pairs of spectacles to Vision Aid Overseas. Specsavers Balbriggan Store Director Brian Brodigan says, “The main aim

of Vision Aid Overseas is to help visually impaired people in under-served areas reach their fullest potential. Lots of people have old glasses lying around at home with an out of date prescription that are no longer being used. These unwanted glasses can be used by those in need’.Brian continued: ‘I would like to extend my gratitude to staff and customers of Specsavers Balbriggan who have showed their support for this worthy charity over the years and helped us to donate such a large number of frames. Talented fingal students win texaco awards Nine Fingal students were amongst 40 Dublin winners who have been presented with top awards in this year’s 65th Texaco Children’s Art Competition. Pictured is Eve Aherne (8), a pupil at St. Marnock’s National School, Portmarnock, who won second prize in the 7-8 years age category of the Competition. Presenting her with the award is Chairman of the judging panel, Professor Gary Granville and James Twohig, Director Ireland Operations at Valero. Another top Fingal winner who received his prize at a ceremony held in Enfield recently, was Bora Ozalp (10), a pupil at Rolestown National School, who won third prize in the 9-11 years age category of the Competition. Pet Advice For The Summertime

Summer is approaching, and if you’re about to set tails wagging by setting off on a pet-friendly holiday, it’s important to take the right measures to keep them safe and happy throughout the car journey.Here are our top tips to consider when travelling with your furry friend. Make sure they’re properly restrained. For everybody’s safety, it’s important that your pet is either secured with a pet seatbelt or in a carrier. Having your pet loose in the car could distract you from your driving, or result in your pet getting in the way of the steering wheel. The Highway Code states that drivers could be pulled over for driving without due care and attention by having a dog unrestrained. Alternatively, our Bracco Travel Carriers are a great way to safely transport your pet and are designed to fit in most cars.

Let their food digest To help prevent travel sickness, try to feed your pet a few hours before you set off, or feed them when you arrive at your destination. This can include vomiting, panting, restlessness, whining and yawning. New Interim Chief Executive of Fingal County Council

AnnMarie Farrelly, Interim Chief Executive, Fingal County Council

AnnMarie Farrelly has been appointed as Interim Chief Executive of Fingal County Council following the departure of Paul Reid to become Director General of the Health Service Executive.Ms Farrelly, who held the role of Director of Planning and Strategic Infrastructure, was appointed by the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government and assumes the role of Interim CEO from today (May 14) until a permanent appointment is made by the Public Appointments Service. “Quality of life, housing and economic development will remain our key priorities for the county,” Ms Farrelly said, adding that there was a substantial operational and capital works programme to be delivered in 2019.Ms Farrelly said “It is really a great honour for me to have been appointed by the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government as interim CEO. I am looking forward to continuing the good work we have been doing as a Council since our formation in 1994.”She added: “Fingal County Council has a busy period ahead with key projects such as the Our Balbriggan Rejuvenation Plan, Swords Cultural Quarter and Shackleton Gardens to be delivered.It is also an important time as we are preparing for the Local Elections on May 24 and getting ready to welcome in a new Council who will represent our 300,000 residents for the next five years. We will also be working with the elected members on a new Corporate Plan which will guide the Council over the next five years.” In addition to serving as Director of Planning and Strategic Infrastructure since 2015, Ms Farrelly was also Fingal County Council’s Director of Housing and Community from 2011 to 2015 and previously chaired the Boards of the Seamus Ennis Arts Centre and the Drinan Enterprise Centre.
