Native Tree Trail launched in Glebe Park Balrothery

As part of National Tree Week, the Native Tree Trail was launched by Mayor of Fingal Cllr. Anthony Lavin in Glebe Park Balrothery on Wednesday April 3rd. The trail is a collaboration between Fingal County Council, Balrothery Tidy Towns and the enthusiastic children from Balrothery National School. Glebe Park is the first park in Fingal to participate in the Tree Council of Ireland initiative of Native Irish Tree Trails. The scheme comprises of the full 16 varieties of native Irish trees and 1 variety of naturalised tree, which is the beech tree chosen as they are the distinctive mature tree line already within the park. Each species of tree carries with it a collection of insects, snails, lichens, birds, fungi and birds

to name a few. The Oak and Willow have 450 species of insects that feed only on them. Birch trees support 300, Alder and Hazel have over 100. They are the supporters of a wide variety of wildlife. In addition to the bio-diversity feature there is a strong environmental education aspect to this initiative aimed at the youth population with the involvement of Balrothery National School. Together with their teacher Ms Whyte the 5th class pupils researched each of the 17 species and the result of their studies form the information on the signs on the Tree Trail. Mayor of Fingal Cllr. Anthony Lavin said “It is great to see Fingal County Council collaborating with the Balrothery community in this initiative.

Planting native trees will have a positive effect on the environment for the future benefit of the children involved her today.” David Storey, Director of Services Fingal County Council continued “Fingal County Council were delighted to collaborate on this Native Tree Planting initiative when approached. The launch of this tree trail was just one of many events taking place across Fingal’s parks to mark National Tree Week, and is evidence of our commitment to providing and maintaining high quality parks and open spaces for the Fingal Community as well as contributing to biodiversity and combating climate change.”

€116,250 for Balbriggan/ Rush harbour projects Fingal is set to benefit from €116,250 funding for pier and harbour projects, Fine Gael Senator James Reilly has said. The Senator said,”The funding will help Fingal County Council to carry out development and repair works on harbours and slipways in Fingal. The funding includes regarding Balbriggan-the provision of supply ports, Water and Electricity for local Fishermen €56,250 and Rush : €60,000 for improving the surface stonework on the Harbour. Senator Reilly said: “The Fingal Council owned harbours in receipt of funding under this year’s programme should play a critical role in the social and economic wellbeing of rural coastal communities.” He added, “In addition to an immediate employment spin off during the works, this funding contributes to the ongoing development of fishing related activities, increasing participation in marine leisure and supplementing measures to attract greater numbers of tourists which ultimately create the environment for sustainable job creation opportunities in rural locations” The Local Authority programme forms part of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marines’ 2019 Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme, whereby the Department co-funds up to 75% of the total cost of approved projects with the Local Authority providing the balance.

Official Opening of Stephenstown Link Road in Balbriggan

Mayor of Fingal Cllr Anthony Lavin officially opens the Stephenstown Link Road in Balbriggan.

The Stephenstown Link Road was officially opened on Monday, 8th April 2019 with Mayor of Fingal Cllr Anthony Lavin cutting the ribbon on this key piece of infrastructure development within Balbriggan.. The new Link Road in Stephenstown Industrial Park runs from the existing roundabout on the Stephenstown Road to a new roundabout on Clonard Street Road, linking to the back of Millfield and on to the Naul Road. The project included the construction of footpaths, cycleways, foul and surface water drainage, public lighting and utility services.Fingal County Council’s investment in the Stephenstown Link Road

opens up almost 23 hectares of industrially zoned lands for development with the potential to bring approximately 900 new jobs to the area. Balbriggan is only 20 minutes from Dublin Airport and 25 minutes from Dublin Port. The M1 motorway is two kilometres away from Stephenstown Industrial Park while the nearby M50 makes much of the rest of the country highly accessible and the park a highly attractive environment to potential investors. Cllr. Anthony Lavin, Mayor of Fingal County Council, said ‘It gives me great pleasure to open the Stephenstown Link Road. The completion of this Link Road opens up almost 23 hectares

of industrial lands which has the potential to bring 900 jobs to the area and will realise social, community, commercial, economic and family benefits for the town of Balbriggan’. Mr. Paul Reid, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, said ‘The Link Road is another example of Fingal County Council’s commitment to investing in high quality industrial lands for development thereby creating the potential to bring substantial additional jobs to Balbriggan and enhance the quality of life of potential employees many of whom will live only minutes away while enjoying a harbour town setting’.

Road Safety at Roadworks campaign launched David Storey, Director of Services, Operations Department said: “Improving safety at roadworks takes real collaboration across the roads industry, and I am delighted that these companies have come together to jointly support this campaign. It epitomises the spirit of co-operation that exists in our supply chain on this important issue as we continue our work to ensure that nobody comes to harm as a result of working for or on behalf of Fingal County Council.“ DRIVERS If you drive a vehicle, at some point you’ll drive through roadworks. Follow these safety tips: Adhere the speed limit on display,Follow the temporary road signage in place,Stay alert for the roadworkers and machinery.Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.Do not break the red light or ignore a flagman stop sign.

A line of cones won’t stop a speeding car but you can: A Road Safety reminder from Fingal County CouncilEvery year there are hundreds of incursions into roadworks which put road workers’ lives at risk and lead to deaths and serious injury. This has spurred local authorities from around Ireland to join forces to take action.

An Orange Cone Safety Zone Week campaign, which has its focus on the lack of awareness of some drivers that roadworks are a place of work for thousands of people and that all of us have a right to expect a safe working environment, is being launched by local authority road safety officers from around the country.

ROADWORKERS The following are key elements of temporary traffic control management in roadworks: Training-All persons working on roads should be trained on how to work safely near public traffic namely by completing the Health and Safety at Roadworks on Roads (1 Day) and/or Signing, Lighting & Guarding (3 day) course. Make yourself visible- All workers should always wear high-visibility clothing during roadworks. Traffic management-Suitable traffic management must be in place to safeguard workers and members of the public.Work areas- Must be clearly marked and must be protected with buffer or safety zones.

What the Banks don’t want you to know! By Dave Kavanagh Most people use banks for a variety of services and products for convenience. In many cases, people assume that their bank is giving them the most suitable products for the best value but is that really the case? Quite often, a bank is limited in the range of options it has to offer but won’t necessarily tell you this because they want you to buy their products and make them more profit. Some of the most common areas where we see this being the case, include mortgage protection, life & serious illness cover, home insurance, personal loans and current accounts. When people apply for mortgages (usually the biggest financial obligation you will probably have in your life) the associated products required can seem secondary in comparison and quite often, the bank arranges to put these other products in place for you. In many cases the bank is tied to just one company’s offering, for example with mortgage protection, so they are not in a position to offer you alternative mortgage protection that could be much cheaper. You are under no obligation to take out any such products with the bank that provides your mortgage. Even if you did so some years back, you can still compare today and if you can get mortgage protection that is sufficient to cover your remaining balance and term and it is cheaper than what you are paying, you are quite entitled to replace it. This is usually more noticeable with personal life or serious illness cover, as the premium will usually

be higher, leading to a larger saving. The same is often the case with home insurance where we see people who have their home insurance premium deducted with their mortgage payment so just leave it as it is, when in fact, they can be paying close to double what they could be insuring their home by shopping around each year. With competition in banking meaning that options constantly change, it is well worth researching alternatives to make sure you are getting the best value. A €20 per month saving on a mortgage protection plan with 20 years remaining, is €4,800 in total! People will often take the time to compare products in a supermarket to see if one option is a few cents cheaper than another but yet not take the time to compare things that are deducted by direct debit despite the potential of much larger savings. It really is worth taking a little time to make sure you are getting the best value for your hard-earned money. It’s far better in your pocket! With Summer on the way it is time to think about keeping your pets comfortable with the warmer weather. They are wearing fur coats year round and the warmer weather can lead them to over heat, de hydrate, heat stroke, and these are all easily preventable. Never leave your pet in a car. Cars can turn into ovens very quickly and it does not take long to affect your pet in it. Do not take you Dog for a walk in the middle of the day, Go out early Morning or in the Evening when temperature are a little cooler. And for around the house, there are a lot of cooling accessories you can get. Cooling Mats, Toys, Vests, Coats and even Swimming Pools made especially for Dogs! It does not take a lot to keep your pet safe during the summer heat, but it can be easily forgotten that what we find warm, can be too much for them to take.

Guide Dogs -We urgently need your help! Recently a premises in our area closed down and they had a large collection dog in it. Balbriggan Rugby - “Give it a try” programme for girls!

Balbriggan RFC is one of 70 clubs around the country taking part in the IRFU ‘Give It A Try’ programme this summer. This programme is an introduction to rugby and is aimed at girls from ages 10-14 who are complete beginners to rugby.The 8 week programme begins at the club on Friday, 10th May, from 7.30pm-8.30pm.At a cost of only €10 for the 8 weeks which includes a free T-shirt, it’s great value too.It’s a fantastic opportunity for girls aged 10-14 to give rugby a try, make new friends, stay active, learn new skills and most importantly have fun. The course is being given by IRFU accredited coaches. The ‘Give It A Try’ Summer 2018 programme saw over 1,000 girls take part in the programme at 38 different clubs around Ireland. This year looks

set to see that number of girls taking part increase dramatically as the number of clubs participating across the country has almost doubled. Currently, Balbriggan RFC has girls playing at minis level from U7’sU12’s and youth girls teams for U14, U16 and U18’s.
