Construction to start on New skate park for Balbriggan

Fingal County Council is delighted to announce that construction of a destination style skate park will commence in Millpond Park, Balbriggan. Freestyle Skateparks have designed and built over 600 skateparks in the last 30 years and have been contracted by Fingal County Council to build the skate park in Balbriggan. It is expected that the skate park will be completed and available for use within the first half of 2019. The classic plaza style facility is designed for families and spectators to appreciate as well as users and will cater for a wide age-range and level of experience. Community engagement has been essential in this process. Before tendering for the project, Fingal County Council’s Parks & Green Infrastructure Division undertook a

design workshop with the Balbriggan skate park Committee and local users to determine their requirements. A key element of the project was that the design of the skatepark be informed by the stakeholder feedback and complemented the character of Millpond Park. The news has been welcomed by the Balbriggan Skatepark Committee. A spokesperson for the Committee said: “It is heart-warming to know that the local Balbriggan Community and Fingal County Council can work so constructively together towards the completion of such wellsought-after recreational projects. We know that the Skaters and wider Balbriggan community alike will be very grateful for the support given to secure this well-needed sport facility.”

Welcoming the news, Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Anthony Lavin said: “The construction of the skatepark in Balbriggan will be a wonderful resource for the community. Recreational spaces are important for residents to make connections in their communities and pursue their interests. I’m delighted that the Council were able to contribute this project and look forward to its completion.” Fingal County Council’s Director of Planning and Strategic Infrastructure, AnnMarie Farrelly, said: “The skate park in Millpond Park will be a valuable addition for Balbriggan. The provision of services and amenities that allow residents access to public and recreational spaces is vital in developing healthy and happy communities.”

Vacant Housing Unit established by Fingal County Council Fingal County Council has established a dedicated Vacant Housing Unit to ensure that numbers of empty houses around the county are kept to a minimum.As part of this, a specific Vacant Homes Officer has been detailed to manage the pressing need in bringing these properties back into use as demand for housing continues to grow. Director of Housing Margaret Geraghty said that although the amount of vacant housing stock in Fingal is one of the lowest nationally, there is an urgency to bring vacant stock back into use and this has been recognised by Fingal County Council through its establishment of a Vacant Housing Unit. She said: “It is seldom the case that a property is vacant simply because somebody has decided not to live there. There are a range of reasons why a property might not be in use, so we try to open direct engagement with the property owner, the receiver, the bank or whoever it happens to be, to get the houses back into use.” In terms of its own stock, the local authority has continued to maintain a void rate of less than one per cent during 2018. She added, “We have about 5,500 properties in our stock, which is an increase of 60 per cent over last 10 years. There has been a very substantial increase in social housing across the county, and we manage to maintain a very low vacant property level within our own stock.This is something that we continue to put a lot of focus on in terms of how we go about our business,

and we ensure that we have contractors on panels that we can quickly get them into refurbish properties.” She advised members of the public if they are

Don’t wait until your health prevents you getting the best value By Dave Kavanagh “It’ll never happen to me”, would appear to be the thought process behind the lack of preparation many people are guilty of, when it comes to planning for negative events. Let’s face it, nobody wants to think that anything “bad” will happen to them but the reality is, bad things happen whether we like it or not. The three areas that are most prevalent to this topic are, Life Cover, Serious Illness Cover and Income Protection. Of course, we would hope that we are not going to die prematurely, we are not going to get seriously ill and accident or illness will not prevent us from being able to work. Sadly, in this small country of ours, over 7,000 people die each year NOT of natural causes (under age 65), we are heading towards 40,000 new cancer cases every year (the cause of more than 50% of Serious Illness claims) and the average time off work for an income protection claim is close to 5 years! When I do group talks, I often ask the question whether anyone’s close family or friends have been affected by cancer? I have only ever had one person say “no”. When I ask whether the same close family or friends have ever won the lotto jackpot, not surprisingly, it’s (almost) always “no”. Yet with odds of 10.7 million to 1 to win the lotto jackpot, people spend a relatively large amount of money each week on lotto (and Euromillions and scratch cards etc.) believing and hoping that

it will happen to them. The same people have a 4 to 1 chance of being diagnosed with one of the Serious Illnesses covered BEFORE they are 65. We often review people’s finances and see that they have their vehicles insured, their house insured, their pets, mobile phones, lap tops and jewellery insured but not themselves! It’s not until one of these events happens that people can fully appreciate the financial loss that is suffered. An important detail is that even if people have cover in place from a few years back, they could well be paying over the odds premium wise or it may no longer be most appropriate. I recently had a couple who had given up smoking a few years and this would have allowed them to reduce their premium by about half ! The problem was, there was now a medical issue that would prevent new cover and so they remain paying smoker rates because they didn’t review sooner. Gambling. So, you can gamble on nothing bad ever happening to you and putting your money into hoping that something very good will happen to you but reality clearly shows which is far more likely to happen. As the saying goes, “I’d rather have it and never need it rather than need it and never have it”. There are a range of protection plans to suit everyone’s budget. For the cost of a takeaway each month, you can usually have something in place that would make a huge

difference in the event of one of those “bad things” happening. But it won’t get put in place by itself and putting it on the “long finger” will also not get it done (as well as run the risk that your health in the future could prevent you being accepted for cover at all). If you or your family would suffer a financial loss in the event of a fatality, a serious illness or a long period being unable to work, it’s up to you to make sure that you have protected them against such a loss. It could be the wisest money you ever spend and it could cost far less than you might think! It’s important that people consider their own, specific circumstances, as subtle differences can mean what’s appropriate for one person or family may not be for another. For free

Community Groups lobby for better transport Community groups from across Fingal have come together to lobby for better public transport infrastructure. Representatives from Malahide, Skerries, Rush and Donabate met recently in a bid to form a group to seek improvements in the stretched public transport links in the area. The meeting was called by Donabate Portrane Community Council. The surge in building and growing employment has meant that it was now proving difficult for commuters to access services to get to work, the meeting was told.The roads network is also congested.Private housing development activity is now very close to 2008 levels, when the housing boom was at its peak, according to recent information from Fingal County Council.Bus services at peak times are

at capacity and there was a need for more direct services into the city, the group said. Rail was not a viable option for many in Fingal.There has been little investment in the Northern Commuter rail line in the past few years, the meeting heard. At a recent meeting with Irish Rail community groups were advised that there would be no significant improvements until at least 2021.This is despite the fact that passenger numbers are up 5% year on year on already, leading to record numbers on this route. The meeting of the Fingal community groups in Donabate was told that transport links must be prioritised in terms of addressing infrastructural deficiencies to the rail and bus network. Donabate Portrane Community Council

recently raised these issues at the Fingal County Council’s Public Participation Network planning, housing and transport linkage group meeting. A petition has also been circulated in Fingal calling on the Minister for Transport Shane Ross and National Transport Authority to prioritise and urgently ring-fence the necessary funding required to address the public transport deficits.The meeting was told that Minister For Transport Shane Ross and NTA must ensure the provision of direct bus services into and out of the city centre at peak times to alleviate the congestion on the trains. Donabate Portrane Community Council is calling on all community groups along this rail line to support and share this petition as a matter of urgency.

The importance of Flea and Tick control Fleas & Ticks are a year round problem for Dogs and Cats. A single Flea can lay 50 eggs every day, which can fall off your pet into carpets, furniture, beddings and can quickly escalate into a serious problem. This makes the prevention of Fleas very Important. There are a lot of products available, but how effective are they? If you find your pet does have fleas, there is not a single product in a Supermarket or Poundshop that kills fleas. They sell products that repel fleas. Great care should be used with cats with these products as a number of them have wound up with severe burns, and other reactions requiring veterinary care when they are used, and none are safe for use on puppies or kittens. Fleas can also carry the larvae of the Tapeworm. Making sure your pet is also treated for this is also very important. Ticks are also a problem, with their ability to carry diseases Like Lyme Disease, and a UK study showed one in 3 dogs had a tick, prevention of this is also a concern. Guide Dogs go the Lord Mayors Ball We in the Balbriggan\North County Dublin branch of guide dogs have wonderful support so can you imagine working in Echo Boutique 16 Dublin Street Balbriggan and been asked for two dickey bows for two guide dogs that were going to the Dublin Lord Mayors ball in the Mansion House on Saturday 26th of January. Well as we find so often in Balbriggan and throughout the north county there is always a willingness to support the cause of guide dogs. Irish guide dogs for the blind were one of three charities that will benefit from the funds raised at the lord mayors charity ball in the Mansion House on 26th January. The other charities on the night was Hughes House and Jack and Jill We are all volunteers and we work to raise money to train guide dogs for blind people and to assist a family who have a child with Autism.We are always looking out for more volunteers. Gaelscoil Ros Eo Celebrate Tenth Anniversary By Rebecca Daly Gaelscoil Ros Eo has begun planning their celebrations for their tenth anniversary. The school was set up in 2008 and was held in the Rush Scout Den in Kenure Woods. In February 2009, the school moved to its current location on the grounds of St. Maurs GAA Club in Rush.The school are marking the occasion on June 7th. They plan to hold some shows in the school - as Gaeilge, of course – during the day for the pupils along with some other activities. They also plan to invite their past pupils in to celebrate the anniversary. In the evening, they will invite parents to a celebration in the hall in St. Maurs GAA Club with a barbeque, music and a raffle. To fundraise for this special day, the school are running a monthly cash draw called “an Pota Óir”, which translates to pot of gold. To enter this, participants send €5 in a special envelope into the school. All of the envelopes are then put into a drum and one winner is chosen. The money made from the collection of the envelopes is split into two, with half going to the chosen winner and half to the school. The first draw took place at Christmas, with the school and the winner taking €265 each!The draw is open to everyone and envelopes can be collected in the school.

Scrumptious protein pancakes just for you Protein has become a bit of a buzz word and although most of us in Ireland DO eat enough protein for what our bodies need, a lot of us tend to eat the majority of our protein in our evening meal. Research has shownthat it is more beneficial to try and eat food sources of protein throughout the day rather than a load all at once! Having protein in this way and especially following exercise that uses our muscles will help to keep our muscle and our bodies lean. And the great news is that applies to everyone, no matter your age. Here is a recipe for ‘protein pancakes’ which uses basic food ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen!

Ingredients

Makes 5 x 100g FULFILLING Pancakes!!! 12 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-MARCH 2019

3 eggs 200g oats 300ml high protein milk 2 tablespoons chia seeds

Method 1. Blitz the oats in a blender/nutri bullet until they turn into a flour like mix. 2. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until mixed thoroughly. 3. Heat a non stick pan. 4. When the pan is hot pour some of the mixture on and allow to cook for 2-3 minutes. (Covering the pancakes will help them cook faster). 5. When the edges start to lightly brown and look dry and bubbles start appearing

on the pancake surface,flip the pancake over and cook the other side. Top them off as you like and GOBBLE EM UP!!!! (I love mine with peanut butter, sliced banana and dark chocolate drizzled on top as a scrumptious and VERY satisfying treat!) An enthusiastic crowd including many from local Historical Societies enjoyed a very informative talk given by Dr. William Murphy, on the First Dáil in the Council Chamber, Swords recently. Fingal County Council, in conjunction with Rolestown/Oldtown Historical Association were commemorating the 100th anniversary of the first meeting of Dáil Éireann in the Round Room in the Mansion House on 21st January 1919. Catherine Keane from Fingal Local Studies and Archives introduced the main speaker Dr. William Murphy, who is based in the School of History and Geography, DCU and whose primary field of research is modern Irish history, with particular expertise in the history of the Irish revolutionary period. His talk outlined political and social life after the 1916 Rising setting the scene for the establishment of the First Dáil. Contact us: communitylocals@gmail.com

Twenty-seven MPs attended the first meeting of the Dáil and the proceedings were held in the Irish language, although translations of the documents were also read out in English and French. The members declared Irish independence, ratified the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic, and adopted a provisional constitution. The First Dáil ( Jan 1919 - May 1921) met 21 times, continuing to conduct its main business during the turbulent times of the era.A lively question and answer session followed the talk before Mrs Una O’Brien, Chairperson of the Rolestown/Oldtown Historical Association, addressed the closing remarks, particularly in relation to the local involvement in the events of the era and brought the evening to a close by thanking the speaker and those in attendance.
