Balbriggan Mens Sheds commissioned by Australian Embassy

Balbriggan Men’s Shed was recently commissioned by the Australian Embassy to make 6 x1 metre high wooden Boomers (Kangaroos) to pull Santas sleigh in the Ambassadors garden. His Excellency Richard Andrews, Australian Ambassador to Ireland issued this statement after the handover of the Boomers The Australian Embassy were delighted to collaborate with our friends at Balbriggan Men’s Shed this month on commissioning the newest members of the Embassy team – 6 White Boomers, inspired by the beloved Australian Christmas song. These kangaroos will make

the Ambassador’s Residence their new home, in preparation for pulling Santa Claus’sleigh on Christmas Eve. We’d like to sincerely thank all of the members of the Balbriggan Men’s Shed for their fantastic efforts and hard work on this project. Close bonds of friendship and collaboration exist between men’s sheds in Ireland and Australia and we are thrilled that we could once again celebrate these strong ties. In September 2017, the Governor General of Australia and patron of the Men’s Shed movement in Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove and his wife Lady Cosgrove enjoyed visiting the

shedders in Balbriggan as part of his state visit to Ireland. The Men’s Sheds movement originated in Australia, to encourage an atmosphere of old-fashioned mateship, improving mental and emotional health & wellness, and tackling loneliness, isolation and depression amongst men. Ireland has enthusiastically embraced the concept and will reach an impressive 500 Men’s Shed groups across the country in just five years. We’d like to congratulate the team at Balbriggan Men’s Shed for the successful recent funding application for the expansion of the Balbriggan Men’s Shed – a fantastic result! -

Fingal LCDC funding 123 community and voluntary groups Fingal’s Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) has approved the allocation of almost €500,000 to community and voluntary groups across the region under the Community Enhancement Programme (CEP). Some €326,668 was allocated by the Department of Rural & Community Development to Fingal County Council in September in addition to the sum of €150,521 received in May. Some 123 groups across the region will receive funding under (CEP), which supports disadvantaged communities throughout the country by providing capital grants to community groups. A total of 174 applications were received. The successful applicants were located across the county with Balbriggan and Blanchardstown in particular approved for substantial funding reflecting applications received from groups dealing with disadvantage in these areas. The application process for the CEP is administered by Local Community Development Committees (LCDCs) in each Local Authority area. There was an open application process when the CEP was originally launched in May, and the additional funding secured in the second allocation will be used to fund applications that were made under the original call, but which were not funded or not fully funded. The CEP provides a flexible and targeted approach to funding those communities most

in need and is aimed at addressing disadvantage as identified in the Fingal Local Economic and Community Plan. Emer O’Gorman, Fingal County Council’s Director of Economic, Enterprise and Tourism Development said: “We are delighted with this additional funding which will allow investment in communities across Fingal. We look forward to working with the many community and voluntary groups to bring their projects to fruition.” Fingal LCDC Chairperson Pat O’Connor said: “I welcome the approval by the LCDC of this funding which will greatly assist community groups in delivering their projects. The level of funding made available recognises the important role played by community and voluntary groups in addressing disadvantage in our communities.”

Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring said: “The Community Enhancement Programme supports a range of investment in all areas of communities, such as childcare groups, playgrounds, recreational groups, sports grounds, landscaping, and the elderly. “The additional funding has been allocated in a way that takes deprivation levels into account and I am confident that those communities who need it most, whether in cities, towns or rural areas, will benefit.” €16,000 was also provided by the Department of Rural and Community Development to support the work of Men’s Sheds through the Community Enhancement Programme this year, which benefitted nine local groups in Fingal.

Busy year ahead for Balbriggan/North Dublin Guide Dogs Balbriggan\North County Dublin Branch of guide dogs nominated Andrew Green guide dog owner Balbriggan under the category of music and Zenon Debny and family under the category of integration for the Balbriggan Community awards that took place on Thursday 6th of December in the Bracken Court hotel. The Debny family have puppy walked 7 puppies for guide dogs and some have gone on to be assistance dogs for families who have a child with Autism, one has gone on to be a guide dog and another has gone on for breeding with another guide dog center in Europe. Zenon and family are from Poland and are very much at home in balbriggan. Andrew Green is a tenor and enjoys singing with choirs, weddings and funerals as a profession.Tom O’Neill Co-Chair of the branch and Andrew Green are known in many schools throughout the north county area for giving talks on guide dogs and visual impairment. Our East Region office is now open!!!We are delighted to announce that the doors of the new guide dogs offices in Dublin to be known as the East Region office are now open and everyone is welcome!The office is located at 48 upper Mount Street, Dublin 2. We are going to the Dublin Lord Mayor’s Charity Ball - The Lord Mayor of Dublin Niall Ring is hosting the Lord Mayor’s Charity Ball on Saturday 26th January 2019 in the Round Room at the Mansion House.He will host the Ball for three charities, with monies raised being split between them. Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind is one of these charities! Fingal and South Dublin County Councils Launch Bike Safety Campaign

The Mayors of South Dublin County Council and Fingal County Council Cllr Mark Ward and Cllr. Anthony Lavin, along with Garda representatives, council officials, road safety officers and members of Motor Cycling Ireland.

Fingal County Council and South Dublin County Council have launched a joint public awareness campaign, highlighting the dangers quad bikes and scramblers pose to children, and to urge parents not to gift them this Christmas.

The campaign supports the recent initiative by the Road Safety Authority, which includes an advert featuring motocross rider Stuart Edmonds.The advert outlines the correct environment, and care to be taken when riding these

vehicles, and will be shown in cinemas throughout Fingal and South Dublin. In the last number of years there has been a noticeable increase in the number of quads and scrambler bikes being used in an inappropriate manner in urban

towns and cities. Unless the bike has been registered, taxed, insured and brought up to the correct standard it is illegal for it to be used on the public road. It is illegal to use these bikes in public parks and open spaces. President of Motorcycling Ireland Sean Bissett said: â€œThere are affiliated clubs all over Ireland who can provide guidance and advice for beginners. The resources are there for people to enter this sport in a safe and responsible way and we encourage all riders to contact their club and learn how to partake in this sport correctly.â€?Three of the four people who died in Ireland as a result of an incident involving a quad bike or scrambler were aged 18 or under, in the period 2014 to 2017, according to provisional statistics published by The Road Safety Authority (RSA).The casualty figures also show that between 2014 and 2017, there were 39 people killed or injured in collisions involving a quadbike or scrambler on a public road. 16 or 41% were 18 years of age or under.

Presentation of Balbriggan Town Awards 2018 The Balbriggan Community Liaison Committee hosted the Balbriggan Town Awards on Thursday 6th December 2018 in the Bracken Court Hotel. Fingal County Council on track for social housing target

Fingal County Council, which has one of the highest delivery rates of new builds in the country last year, remained on track to deliver

over 1,600 social housing homes in 2018 as set down by Government in December. Fingal County Council has a

target of 1,637 homes for the whole year and with significant delivery expected in the final quarter of 2018, the local authority was on track

to meet that target.Latest figures from the Department of Housing show that Fingal County Council has delivered 1,019 homes, almost two-thirds of its annual target, in the first nine months of 2018. They are across the range of housing mechanisms, including new builds, acquisitions and leasing. During Quarter Four, Fingal County Council was expecting to deliver more than 600 homes across the county.Director of Housing Margaret Geraghty said: “Fingal County Council remains on track to reach our delivery target of 1,637 in 2018 as set down by the Department. Up to the end of September, we have achieved two-thirds of this target and have delivered one of the highest number of new builds in the country. “During the final quarter of 2018, we saw further homes come on stream across the country, and we are confident that we will reach the target. Fingal County Council is working tirelessly to ensure that we deliver our target and meet the needs of families and individuals who are on the housing list.”

Fingal Enterprising Women are Making it Happen

Over 100 Fingal female entrepreneurs joined the Local Enterprise Office Fingal to celebrate the start to the festive season at the annual Fingal Enterprising Women Network (FEWN) Christmas Lunch recently at the Roganstown Hotel and Country Club.The theme and keynote of the event were forward-looking: â€œConfidence in Action - Empowering Your Success in 2019â€?. Special guest speaker, Sharon Rossignuolo is a dynamic Business and Leadership Coach who loves nothing more than to see female entrepreneurs soar to their potential and thrive! As well as delivering an uplifting and motivating talk to attendees, Sharon ensured that everyone present takes full advantage of the wonderful networking opportunity. Addressing the gathering of female entrepreneurs, the Mayor of Fingal Cllr Anthony Lavin reported that female entrepreneurship is alive and thriving in Fingal. Commenting that, of the 31 businesses approved for business priming and expansion grant funding in Fingal in 2018, 14 of these businesses are led by women, with a further three led jointly by female/male directors, so over 50% are led solely or jointly by women entrepreneurs. Our Local Enterprise Office also reports that of the 151 people that have so far this year completed the Start Your Own Business programme, more than half (52%) are female entrepreneurs, and of the 526 candidates that participated in management development workshops this year, 69% are women entrepreneurs demonstrating strong female enterprise activity within Fingal. The Local Enterprise Office in Fingal runs the Fingal Enterprising Women Network. It provides networking and learning opportunities for women in business and enterprise in the region. How To Improve Your Chances of Mortgage Approval By Dave Kavanagh When you make the decision to purchase your own home, it’s usually done by getting a mortgage from a lender. Strictly speaking, the word “mortgage” refers to the legal agreement to hold title as security for a home loan, but these days, most people use it to refer to the home loan itself. The right preparation can make a huge difference in whether or not an application is successful. Lenders have an obligation to make sure they have assessed the affordability of the loan, and how you prepare can be crucial. There are a number of factors to the criteria used to assess your borrowing potential. These include the Central Bank guidelines of only lending (in the majority of cases) 3.5 x gross annual salaries, and not exceeding 90% of the purchase price (for first time buyers). Also, the lenders have their own formulas based on your NDI (net disposable income) to make sure that you can still afford to live comfortably on what remains after you have paid your monthly instalment. Probably the most important factor after taking these into account, is how you display a “proven ability to repay”. By this, I mean that when a lender considers your application, which will normally include things like payslips, P-60s, salary certificates and bank statements, how evident is it that you can afford the monthly repayment? For example, supposing

the monthly cost of the loan you are applying for is €1,400 per month. A lender will “stress test” this figure (to allow for a possible increase in interest rate during the term of the loan) and look to see affordability of perhaps, €1,550. So if you are evidently paying €1,750 rent every month, this shows affordability. Or you could be paying €1,000 in rent and also showing that you save €800 per month. If this is not evident over a regular period of time, it can, combined with other factors, lead to an application being declined. Another important aspect, is how you conduct your bank statements. If your statements show that you reach a nil balance every month before pay day, or worse, go into overdraft, this will not instil confidence in your ability to repay. Just as important is clear evidence of savings for your deposit. Even when these things are in order, something that can hugely affect the amount you qualify for, is any short term lending, whether it’s credit card bills, car or personal loans. Best to have none at the time of application, and also important to make sure any short term lending is paid timely as a credit report showing your history of paying such things will also be viewed. Buying a home is usually the single, biggest financial transaction your will make in your lifetime. Make sure you plan in advance to get it right.

Dublin’s All-Ireland stars honoured at County Hall

Fingal County Council has honoured three Dublin All-Ireland winning teams at a special reception at a trophy-filled County Hall in Swords.It was a wonderful evening at County Hall as members of the Dublin senior men’s and ladies All-Ireland winning teams, as well as the Dublin Junior Camogie team were honoured for their sporting exploits during the summer. The cups were paraded proudly into the Council Chamber on Monday evening as Fingal County Council paid tribute to the four-in-a-row Dublin men’s winning team and the two-in-a-row ladies team. Ireland champions in 2018. Welcoming the teams to County Hall, Mayor of Fingal Cllr Anthony Lavin said: ‘The dedication that sportsmen and women display is an inspiration to all in their community. The GAA and LGFA bring people of all backgrounds and ages together in an inclusive and exciting way.“It allows those who take part in playing or running the clubs to connect with their community, make friends and learn a fantastic skill. Thank you all for your contribution and for joining us to celebrate this evening.” Cllr Lavin added: “With 24 clubs across Fingal, the communities have very proactive players,

managers and volunteers who dedicate their time and effort to running the facilities needed for these teams to train, compete and represent their clubs and county at all levels. As Mayor of Fingal, I would like to thank you all for your hard-work which benefits so many people across the county.” Fingal County Council Chief Executive Paul Reid also paid tribute to the winning teams, describing them as role models to young people across the county.Sport plays an important role, not just in terms of physical health but mental health for our young people. It’s a pleasure and a privilege to meet you all here this evening.”

Gorgeous Granola Granola can be full of fibre from oats, nuts, seeds and dried fruit in addition to lots of vitamins and minerals. However it can also be full of sugar and a lot of granola in Irish supermarkets are quite high in sugar. This homemade recipe for granola below is simple to make. Wholesome and satisfying to have. And it is scrumptious with fresh fruit and natural yogurt or milk for breakfast, supper or as a snack!

Ingredients • 350g oats • 100g chopped pecan nuts • 150g other chopped nuts (such as hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews or flaked almonds) • 150g mixed seeds (such as pumpkin, chia, sunflower, flaxseed/linseed) • 130ml maple syrup/honey • 2 teaspoons cinnamon • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract/essence • 40ml melted coconut oil or rapeseed oil 16 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-JANUARY 2019

• 150g dried fruit of your desire (such as raisins, sultanas, cranberries, chopped dates, chopped apricots)

Method 1.Preheat the oven to 160’c. 2.Place a baking sheet or a piece of parchment paper onto a baking tray. (This is to prevent the granola mixture from sticking to the baking tray). 3.Add the melted coconut oil/rapeseed oil, maple syrup, vanilla and cinnamon into a large mixing bowl and stir to combine. 4.Add the remaining ingredients (EXCEPT the dried fruit) into the mixing bowl and coat the dry ingredients with the moist ingredients. Use your hands to really bind the mixture well together into small clumps/clusters. 5.Spread this mixture as an even layer on the lined baking tray. Use a second lined baking tray if needed. 6.Bake in the oven at 150’c for 35-40

minutes until the granola is golden. Keep an eye on the granola and turn the tray half-way through baking to ensure all the granola is baked evenly. Avoid stirring the granola as this will reduce the granola clumps/clusters. 7.Make sure the granola is completely cool (this will ensure you get nice crunchy clusters!). Then add the dried fruit and store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks or freeze for up to 1 month.

2018 an amazing year for the Balbriggan Roadrunners

Our year started with a big gang of us taking part in the Raheny Shamrocks 5mile in early January and finished with the Fat Turkey in December and so many events in between. Our 3rd Balbriggan Summerfest 5km in June drew huge crowds and beautiful weather. We had 56 runners enter the Dublin City Marathon with 14 of whom doing their first ever marathon. 19 Roadrunners volunteering at the 26 mile marker on the day cheering everyone towards the finish. We had 3 of our runners (Paul Bissett, Stephen Brasier and Pauline Titier) completing their 50th marathon this year – what an achievement! series to follow some of our runners’ fitness journeys – more to follow on this when the show airs early January 2019. Our ladies over 35 team (Anne O’Brien, Niamh Herbert and Dolores Kelly) won the gold medal in the Dublin Championships 10 mile event this year. While Anne O’Brien and Dolores Kelly won gold in their age categories at the same event - bringing home 5 medals in total. Chris Keeling proudly represented us and Ireland taking part in the British and Irish Cross Country Championships in Swansea in November bringing home a team bronze medal. Our Christmas party was magical and highlighted by the announcement of our much coveted “Roadrunner of the Year 2018” award

which was presented to Olivia Howley for her spirit, effort and contributions to the group. The Roadrunners continue to show up and take part in the weekly parkrun events both as participants and volunteers - going to local events as well as travelling far and wide. Our “Couch to Roadrunners” group is still meeting every Tuesday and Thursday night and people are welcome to join us throughout the year – particularly walkers and beginner runs. You never know what distance you end up doing – maybe even a marathon like many of our group have done this year.
