Dance AMAD huge success in Wales!

Dance AMAD School of Dance are celebrating 18 years of dance and a massive success at The 5 Nations International Cup in Wales. With 36 dancers competing against dancers from all over the 5 nations, Dance AMAD did their trainer Mairead Magennis Kearney very proud. With dancers as young as 6 this dance troop headed over to Wales for the competition. The five Nations is run by Irish promoter Alan Healy of Dance Supreme. Over the course of the weekend the dancers dance for their clubs. However, the last night is 5 Nations night, party night where the best dancers from each club represent their country.. This is a fantastic night with a hugely festival feel, Freestyle, Slow Dance and Hip Hop were the categories and the Irish Team made Ireland proud as the beat their great friends and local rivals Northern Ireland,and Scotland, Wales and England winning the 5 Nations Cup for the 4th consecutive year. All in all Dance AMAD had a hugely successful trip. With extra space needed on the boat on the way home for their 174 trophies. Dance AMAD have classes in Balbriggan on Tuesday & Thursdays and in Raheny on Wednesdays & Saturdays.Dancing is a fantastic way to release energy. It helps improves confidence, co-ordination and overall health amongst other things. But most of all its fun, the kids at Dance AMAD love coming to class, weather they are at competition level or not they do it for the fun. Mairead Magennis Kearney would like to thank Linda Kinlay for supplying her fantastic Lovin Letters for the photo shoot. These are beautiful for a wedding or any event and make a perfect photo. Also thanks to Dance Supreme for a great competition in Wales. The preparations are on now for the European Lyrical Championships which take place in June in City North Hotel. WeBringg success at National Enterprise Awards

‘WeBringg’ from Fingal have been announced as the Dublin Regional Award Winners at the 2018 National Enterprise Awards, organised by the Local Enterprise Offices, at the Mansion House, Dublin yesterday evening (24 May). Backed by Local Enterprise Office Fingal, Alan Hickey and Sean Murray set up the company in (2016) to deliver online sales orders innovatively,

turning the traditional 2-3 day delivery wait time into 90 minutes. The announcement was made recently in the Mansion House by the Minister for Trade, Employment, Business, EU Digital Single Market and Data Protection, Pat Breen T.D. The Minister also presented awards to ‘Terra Liquid Minerals’ for the overall title (supported by LEO

Kildare). Congratulating the local winners, Oisin Geoghegan, Head of Enterprise, Local Enterprise Office Fingal and Chair of the Local Enterprise Office Network said: “WeBringg are very deserving winners of this award, because of the impact that they have already made on their sector. Retirement - What you need to know no matter what age you are By Dave Kavanagh Most people would agree that we tend to spend most money during leisure times, such as weekends and holidays. Retirement places people very much into mostly leisure times but with one major difference, if not properly planned for - a substantial drop in income. According to the central statistics office, the average wage in Ireland last year was €45,611 (€877 per week). The current state pension from age 66 (at present) is €243.30 per week. (For anyone born between 1/1/55 and 31/12/60 it will be from age 67 and for anyone born on or after 1/1/61 it will be from age 68). According to the Dept. of Social Protection, by 2050 it is predicted that there will be less than 2 people working for every 1 person in retirement, adding further strain on the state’s ability to pay pensions. When you combine this with the fact that life expectancy is increasing, it brings a greater sense of urgency for people to plan ahead in order to have an income in retirement that is sufficient. The main point to be aware of, is that the earlier you start to plan, the easier it is to provide for the future. If you think of it as approximately 40 years of working and 20 years of retirement, this means you have double the amount of time to save as you have to get paid in retirement.

That is, if you start at the beginning of your working life. Every year someone delays commencing a retirement plan or pension, means that they will have to pay more into it, to get the same equivalent income they require at retirement. The good news is, there are attractive benefits in the form of tax relief. You get tax relief at your marginal rate of tax on contributions to a pension, so for example, if you pay tax at 40% and you contribute €400 per month into a pension, the net cost to you is only €240 per month. That is the same as saving €240 per month and getting almost 67% growth straight away. For self-employed people, it is often used as a way to reduce tax bills each year by doing a single contribution into their plan to get the tax relief. The % of your net relevant earnings that you can contribute to a pension and get full tax relief, is based on your age. Up to age 30 you can pay 15%, 30-39 it’s 20%, 40-49 it’s 25%, 50-54 it’s 30%, 55-60 it’s 35% and over 60 it’s 40%. If you are self employed or your employer does not provide a pension scheme for you (if there is no scheme in place, an employer must either provide you with a facility to contribute to a PRSA ((pension related savings account)) or allow you paid leave to arrange your own) then you can commence your own personal pension or PRSA. The amount you contribute will usually be decided by a combination of aiming for the income you would

like in retirement and your present affordability. This can change over time, for example someone currently saving for a deposit to buy a home may not have anything spare to put into a pension, but main fact remains, the earlier you start, the more you will have at retirement. On the 16th and 17th of May, St. Catherine’s National School in Rush hosted their annual Choral Festival. Choirs and music groups came from the surrounding communities as well as from Castleknock and Ardclough, Co. Kildare. Choral groups from St. Maurs Parish, St Catherine’s Junior and Senior Choirs and St Catherine’s Ukulele Orchestra performed. Choirs from St. Brandan’s in Loughshinny, Lusk National School and Rush National School were also represented. A past pupil of St. Catherine’s- Emmanuel Mbikaku played some music on the piano for us. Emmanuel is a self taught pianist who has an extraordinary 10 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-JUNE 2018

gift! Alan Leech, National Chamber Choir of Ireland was a special guest, and hosted work-shops with the choirs on both evenings. The Choirs then sang together at the end of each evening and showcased the songs they had learned and practised with Alan. We were delighted with the support received and were able to donate over €700 to Trocaire through Dermot Higgins. All who attended, agreed it was a great success!

227 extra SNAs for Dublin for September Some 227 extra SNAs will be allocated to Dublin schools in September, Fine Gael Senator James Reilly has said. This will bring the total number of SNAs to 4,201locally, with 2,555 in primary schools, 864 in secondary schools and 782 in Special schools. Senator Reilly said: “The aim of this Government is to ensure that children with special educational needs can be supported to fully participate in schools and fulfil their potential. I welcome the very recent opening of a special needs facility at Colaiste Choilm in Swords, where 12 students will be catered for in an ASD unit, in Balbriggan and I am supporting the plan by Skerries Educate together to open 4x 6 special needs classes in Skerries and St Michaels House Skerries to finally get a site for a purpose build school which will cater for 80 pupils. I understand a site acquisition is nearing completion.” He added “Special Needs Assistants play a key role in ensuring this and I would like to firstly take this opportunity to pay credit to the fantastic work that they do in schools across Dublin. Today’s announcement will ensure every child who needs SNA support in Dublin will receive it.In July 2017, my Fine Gael colleague, Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton, gave a commitment that funding for SNA posts would be dealt with as part of the normal Estimates process, meaning that schools would be informed of their allocation for the beginning of the next school year before the end of May 2018. Today’s announcement honours that commitment and will make a real difference to schools and SNAs in planning for the year ahead. It is also expected that a further allocation will be announced during the first term of the new school year This decision is being made now to ensure that each child that is assessed as needing SNA support receives access to such support for the commencement of the new school year..”

Dig on Drumanagh Promontory National Monument 2018 Drumanagh is a nationally important archaeological site and is of international significance in terms of Ireland’s relationship with the Roman world. The site is also a National Monument subject to statutory protection under the National Monuments Act, 1930 (as amended). Fingal’s Community Archaeologist Christine Baker is undertaking a community excavation at Drumanagh Martello Tower with a team of professional archaeologists and volunteers from the local community and beyond. Since the site was acquired, the Council has undertaken works at the site to secure it and to provide for continued public access. The Drumanagh Conservation Study and Management Plan was recently adopted by Fingal County Council after widespread public consultation. ‘It is fanatastic to be undertaking the first scientific excavation at the site’. ‘We hope to tell the story around the Martello Tower and the effect of its construction in the early 19th century. We will be investigating the original road to the tower. What we uncover will inform the future management of the site. It is also hugely exciting for the local community who have such a love for the site’ said Christine. Ian Doyle, Head of Conservation of the Heritage Council said ‘We are happy to support the Digging Drumanagh Project through our grant system and as Chair of the Drumanagh Archaeological Advisory Group it is heartening to see the objectives of the Drumanagh Plan being actioned’. Fingal County Council complete successful trade mission to China

Four knowledge economy start-ups supported by the Fingal Local Enterprise Office (LEO), joined 42 other delegations from cities across the globe at the Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship Fair (GIEF) which took place from 17-20 May. The fair is a major business event in China that features an Exhibition, three Trade Fairs, seven Forums & Summits and two Road Shows and Competitions. The three-day event was attended by 600 participants from 30 countries, including government leaders, world-renowned scientists, academics, diplomats, entrepreneurs and investors. Mayor of Fingal Cllr. Mary McCamley was invited to participate along with Fingal Chief Executive Paul Reid, as guests of the Chengdu Municipal government. Other delegates included Oisín Geoghegan Head of Enterprise in Fingal,

Cllr. Kieran Dennison Chair of the Economic and Enterprise Strategic Policy Committee in Fingal, and Trevor Holmes of DCU’s international relations department. The Fingal businesses that benefited from the event included finalists from this year’s Fingal Enterprise Awards competition: Alan Hickey (WeBringg), Graham McCarthy (MiasPharma), Roman Grogan (DropChef ) and Alex Duller (Relodata). Each of the businesses had an opportunity to address the Deputy Mayor of Chengdu, the fourth largest city in China with a population exceeding 16 million. Of the 42 delegations, Fingal was one of just six regions attending the event which were selected to deliver keynote speeches to delegates, alongside Sydney, Nuremburg, Toronto, Haifa and Nottingham. Linders 80 years of top quality service and value

Linders Motor Group (located locally at Turvey Avenue, Turvey Business Centre, Donabate) are celebrating 80 years of unbroken top quality service and value to the public this year. The company was started in Smithfield in 1938 by Patrick (Sonny) Linders, a young north Dublin man from Donabate/Portrane when he was just 19 years old. This remarkable man started as an engineer who fixed cars and trucks at night at first and lectured in Bolton St at same time to make ends meet. At that time the motor industry here was exclusively British and he had to hustle as a young Irishman, so he sold anything he could get his hands on. Sonny soon became a popular well known and well respected businessman throughout Dublin and the company went from strength to strength. The family have traded on the reputation that he established ever since. The Linders brand has made vast inroads into the motoring industry in Dublin especially in the last 50 years and in the 1960’s Linders became a Fiat main 14 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-JUNE 2018

dealer. However the ethos of a family run business continued and in the 1970’s Sonny was joined by son Joe Linders a qualified accountant and together they took the business and developed it and grew it into other industries including construction & heating. In 1973 Linders became the first Toyota dealer in Ireland and stayed with them for 40 years until changing to Renault Dacia in 2013. Sonny was joined by another son Patrick, a structural engineer in the late 80’s but sadly Sonny passed away in 2001 and is buried in Portrane cemetery. However the family business continued to thrive and grandson Paul joined in 2003. In that year they moved from Smithfield to Chapelizod, and changed the name .In July 2013 the company opened Linders Renault & Dacia Finglas. In October the same year they gave up the Toyota franchise and changed Chapelizod to Renault & Dacia. In July, 2016 they reconnected with Donabate North Dublin and opened Linders Renault & Dacia Swords Turvey just up the road from Sonny’s childhood home. Contact us: communitylocals@gmail.com

Indeed there are many Lynders in Donabate Portrane to whom the family are related. Their name is spelled with an “I” due to a change in Ellis Island USA in 1917 on the arrival/emigration of Sonny’s father Joseph, The Lacer (due to his dapper dress sense) Lynders. Linders was deemed a more American spelling. He never recovered from the insult and moved home (with his wife and 5 year old son) in 1924. Today the Linders Renault & Dacia group has grown into a €50m turnover business in 4 years selling over 3000 vehicles a year. That is a tribute to this hardworking family as a whole and especially to the memory of a 19 year old Sonny who dared to dream and created an unequalled family business model in the area. Speaking of memories Paul Linders recalled his Grandad Sonny very fondly when we spoke to him. He said, “Most of Dublin knew my Granddad as “Sonny Linders”. He was “Grandad” to me. My earliest memories of him are of walking with him down the market in Smithfield. It used to take ages because everyone knew him and he’d stop and talk with everyone we met. He loved the business and all the people in it. Until he died, he came to work everyday. Even today, one of my favourite things since joining the motor business is hearing stories about him and meeting Dubliners who bought their first car from him. I’m very proud of the fact that many of those families still come to us to buy and service their cars today.A portrait of my Grandad hangs in our offices keeping an eye on things even still. I know he’s proud of what we have become in Chapelizod, Finglas and Swords Turvey and the direction in which the business is going. Connecting for Life Dublin North City and County Plan

Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People Jim Daly T.D., launched Connecting for Life Dublin North City and County on Thursday, 17th May 2018. The Launch took place in St. Lawrence’s Church, DIT Grangegorman, Dublin and was attended by a large number of those involved in the drafting of the Plan, including community and voluntary groups from across Dublin North City & County. Connecting for Life Dublin North City and County is our new local Suicide Prevention Action Plan. It is strongly aligned to the national Connecting for Life Strategy, articulating local implementation of national actions, and committing to actions that respond to our

particular local needs, strengths and challenges in Dublin North City & County. Connecting for Life, Ireland’s National Strategy to Reduce Suicide 2015 – 2020 sets out a vision of an Ireland where fewer lives are lost through suicide, and where communities and individuals are empowered to improve their mental health and wellbeing. This involves preventative and awareness-raising work with a “whole of society” approach, including supportive work with local communities and targeted approaches for priority groups. Mary Walshe, Chief Officer, CHO Dublin North City and County said “In communities

across Dublin North City & County, the farreaching effects of suicide on families, friends, classmates and workplaces are severe and devastating. Suicide is one of the most complex and difficult to understand of human behaviours.” She added “By bringing together all aspects of our health and social care system alongside our education, justice and community partners, we are working together to implement meaningful, evidence informed improvements to the approaches and services that we offer to people at risk of suicide and self-harm. Connected services mean that more people can get the right help, at the right time and in the right place.”

Questions for the Council from Cllr Darragh Butler Cllr Darragh Butler recently asked the executive of Fingal County Council if they are or are not the Competent Authority for Dublin Airport. In a direct question to the Chief Executive he asked for an update regarding the Government’s intention to appoint Fingal County Council as the Competent Authority for Dublin Airport, effectively making Fingal County Council the Airport Noise Regulator?” However the reply from the Executive was that the Council has received no further notification following the announcement in January 2018 that Fingal County Council would be designated Competent Authority for EU Regulation 598/2014. Councillor Butler also asked a question regarding the ever increasing scourge of fly tipping in the county. He asked the Chief Executive what advice can be given to members of the public who see people in the act of fly tipping within Fingal, if they encounter fly-tipping after the fact; and to confirm what actions that Fingal County Council is taking to attempt to impose fines and bring fly-tippers to justice; what number of convictions, penalties and fines have been imposed to date? In reply the Council said they need

evidence that will stand up in Court of sufficient strength to obtain a criminal conviction. In this regard members of the public who witness the act of fly tipping can assist in a number of ways if they witness illegal dumping: (A) By taking a note of the details of the person dumping to enable identification of the dumper and if relevant, a picture of the vehicle being used to dump. (B) If it is likely that the culprit could be caught red handed ring the Council’s main telephone number 018905000 or if after hours make a 911 call for the Garda Siochána. (C) Be prepared to make a statement and give evidence in court. Members of the public need to consider their own safety in obtaining evidence. Regarding dumping after the fact, the location and nature of dumping should be reported to the Council. Options for reporting include ringing the Council’s main telephone number 018905000, emailing environment@fingal. ie, through “fixyourstreet” or the EPA app “See It Say It”. An accurate description of the location is required and a photograph would be of assistance. The Council also said in 2017 the statistics on litter fines were: litter fines issued 1000, prosecutions 37 Warning Notices issued 250.

Food Academy is a joint initiative between the network of Local Enterprise Offices within the local authorities, Bord Bia and SuperValu and was established to support early-stage Irish food businesses. Participating companies gain access to expertise in branding, market research, business development and distribution, to allow them to scale up and secure listings with SuperValu.

Local Enterprise Office Fingal have been involved with Food Academy since it’s inception and have seen 16 of their clients now part of the Food Academy programme and supplying SuperValu stores across the county. The 16 LEO Fingal companies to have participated ont the programme are Bake Appétit, Celtic Diamond, Chase Foods, Everest Granola Products, Forage & Cure, Fresh from the Pier, Hope Beer, Howth Cuisine, Kennedy’s Oven Ready,Morning Dew, My Apricot Kitchen, Priya Cuisin, The Be Sweet Company,The Lo-cal Kitchen,Ala&Zu and Sarah’s Rawbites. Oisin Geoghegan, Head of Enterprise, Local Enterprise Office Fingal and Chair of the Local Enterprise Office Network, said; “The Food Academy Programme has been extremely popular for us in the last 5 years. The programme created an opportunity for local food entrepreneurs in Fingal to avail of specialised mentoring and guidance that previously hadn’t existed in the food business. It meant those who had a great food or beverage idea now could see a clear path from idea to shelf. Some of our clients including Hope Beer, Fresh from the Pier and Sarah’s Rawbites have all taken part in Food Academy and we are still working with them now on different areas of their business as they continue to grow.” The next Food Academy programme with Local Enterprise Office Fingal begins on the 31st August 2018. Super day of fashion at Ardgillan Castle

By Fashion Editor - Carina Cunningham We had a super day Saturday the 12th Of May in Ardgillan Castle. Manager Tom Reilly and the lovely staff were mesmerized by the Vintage Masquerade fashion Photo shoot. We had 25 Girl Models 8 guy models and 2 fire-dancers All helping raise funds for my stage production of Style Warriors Fashion and Entertainment Show onn Sat 6th Oct in Wrights Venue Swords. This year the charity we are all supporting is NECRET. This is headed by Professor Bryan Hennessy who has teams in Beaumont Hospital and Our Lady Of Lourdes in Drogheda. They are making new drug trials and their research is crucial in making progress with this horrible illness of the 21st century. We had an amazing day all the designs and outfits were designed by myself Carina Cunningham plus Kat Condon showed one of her beautiful creations. I created head pieces and had Victorian wigs made by the very talented Veronica Byrne from Monaghan assisted by Caroline Quigley , Virginija Vitkauskiene and Kiaran Kiril Olegovich. The make up team were led by special effects artist The Lovely Bianca ,Gillian Stapleton ,Momi Kay,Daisy Contoy,Alexandra Ni Mhartain and Irena Kerutkiene. The chief photographer was David Stanway assisted by Ben Sollis. We really had an amazing time and raised €1000 for stage production costs. 13 photographers attended and they achieved such amazing images. We even had a tour of intrigued German Ladies getting into shots with our 18 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-JUNE 2018

stunning models. The gents suits were supplied by AB formal wear Swords and Dorian Black suit hire Balbriggan. The Castle will never be the same again so many talented and creative people all there to give their time helping NECRET. Please keep the fashion show date free as this is one show you don’t want to miss. There’s lots of music and entertainment planned for the night. We have The Fire Angels coming from Belfast and The Olivia Whelan school of Ballet performing on stage during the show. This show is growing moment-on every year and is huge on Facebook. Emily truly an inspiration in fashion design

This month, I would like to introduce you to Emily Nayhree Art. Emily Art Wear is the design brand of an artist and fashion designer named Emily Nayhree. Her interest started first with fine art and ceramics in GNIT Galway. She is a self taught artist but has also studied advertising, graphics, and web design. She is very passionate about local history and mythology and spent many years travelling around Ireland painting castles. Her art has been featured in some of Dublin’s best contemporary galleries. Her famous clients to date are Christie Moore, and Christie Burke (former Dublin Lord Mayor). Emily attributes her love of art to growing up in a caravan in the Dublin mountains. In fact during the recession, Emily found herself without a place to live and had to move from derelict buildings in Dublin from time to time. passion for the Dublin underground art culture, mixed with music. She hopes to inspire others to aim high and never give up on your dreams. Art, fashion, and music are also related and each passion makes your life rich at a very low cost. Last year Emily Art Wear showed at Capital Times Square in New York’s fashion week. She is now selling to an American designer who sources clothing for the stars. I am so thrilled to say that she has agreed to feature in my upcoming Style Warrior Fashion and Entertainment Show. Our photo shoot shows how amazingly she has changed the most basic clothing into something a lot more unique and special and I must say how rewarding this must be to wear a one of a kind design. She mix matches fake fur with art very cleverly and she also designs for the guys. She can be found on Facebook if any reader is

I think she is a leading example of a young girl driven to succeed as many of your young daughters and sons can be a little lost in the direction they would like to grow. Brain Boost with Banana Bake “The sun is shining and BBQ smells are filling the air, that must mean one thing: it’s exam season!

Fueling the brain with the right food and drinks can help to improve concentration, maintain alertness and sustain energy levels through the long hours of studying and sitting exams. Poor food choices can lead to sluggish, jittery or tired feelings and make it more difficult to focus. Starting the day with a wholegrain breakfast, having regular meals and smart snacks such as fruit or vegetables and keeping hydrated with water throughout the day are just a few ways of keeping the body and brain energised. The recipe below is a nutritious but tasty and filling snack to satisfy sweet cravings while keeping away from the processed or sugary stuff.

Brain Boost with Banana Bake Makes 9 squares 20 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-JUNE 2018

Ingredients

• 2 large ripe bananas • 2 eggs • 300g ground almonds • 40g walnuts blitzed in a blender • 130g greek style/strained vanilla yogurt • 100g agave nectar/honey • 50g coconut oil • 50g dark chocolate, chopped into small pieces • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180’c. Line an 8 inch baking pan with grease-proof (parchment) paper. 2. Mash the bananas in a bowl. Crack in the eggs and mix. 3. Next add the yogurt, vanilla extract and agave/honey and mix. 4. Finally melt the coconut oil and add to

this wet mix. 5. In a separate bowl, mix the remaining dry ingredients together which includes: ground almonds, walnuts, cinnamon and dark chocolate pieces. 6. Add the dry mix to the wet mix and stir well to mix the ingredients thoroughly. 7. Pour the mixture into the pre-lined baking pan. 8. Bake in the oven at 180’c for 40minutes.

Tip: Blitzing the ground almonds even more in a blender will make it more moist. Or instead of ground almonds, you could also use 200g oats blitzed up in a blender to make an oat like flour. Workplace, sports or school Nutrition talks/ workshops, please email: niamh@biabites.

Identification of Bathing Waters Fingal County Council are asking residents who swim at beaches, lakes and rivers to help identify bathing areas that are commonly used for swimming but are not officially categorised as designated bathing waters so that they can be monitored for safety, water quality and level of use. Under European and Irish law, Irish local authorities must identify bathing waters each year so that these areas can be monitored to ensure they meet stringent microbiological water quality standards. Local authorities are required under the Bathing Waters Directive and the Bathing Water Quality Regulations 2008 (SI No 79 of 2008) to identify bathing waters on an annual basis. The Directive requires that water quality at all designated bathing waters meets stringent microbiological standards in order to protect the health of people who choose to bathe there. In some cases, the official bathing areas are also the areas where local authorities focus

their resources providing lifeguards during the summer season. These laws also require that the local authority prepares detailed descriptions or profiles for each of the identified bathing water sites that describe not just the bathing area but also areas in the surface waters catchment area that could be a source of pollution. The profiles include an assessment the risk of pollution and what action would be taken if pollution occurs. If you are a regular swimmer and want to help your Council decide which bathing areas should be classified as such, it might be helpful to consider the following,how your swimming area has been used up to now,how many people use the site,what facilities exist at the site and how accessible it is and any safety issues.If you wish to propose your favourite beach/river etc as a new bathing water site or comment on an existing site please make your submission by Friday, June 22.To make a submission, please go to https://consult.fingal. ie/
