71 new homes for Balbriggan and Clonsilla Twenty new houses have been built by Fingal County Council in Pinewood, Balbriggan.

A further 71 new build social housing homes have been delivered across the county in recent weeks by Fingal County Council as its construction programme continues to ramp up.The latest batch of houses brings to 122 the number of newly built social housing homes provided by the Council’s Housing and Community Department this year and there are a further 198 under construction at seven sites across the county. Fifty-one of the new homes in Clonsilla and Balbriggan have been provided by two

Approved Housing Bodies supported by Fingal County Council – Co-operative Housing Ireland and Respond Housing Association - while the remaining 20 were under the Council’s construction programme. These rapid-build homes have been built to the highest specifications and received an A3 energy rating. “This is the second rapid build development that we have completed inside the past eight months and there is no doubt that it certainly

helping to deliver homes a lot quicker and to a very high standard of specification,“ said Margaret Geraghty, Director of Housing and Community at Fingal County Council.“We are leaving no stone unturned in our efforts to provide more social housing and reduce our housing list. Our partnerships with Approved Housing Bodies is an important part of our overall strategy and we are delighted that they have been able to deliver a further 51 houses in recent weeks.”

Balbriggan & District Historical Society’s recent talk “The General Election of 1918 in North Dublin” as presented by Íde Ní Liathain on Wednesday August 29th in the Town Hall Balbriggan at 8pm was a most interesting event. The talk looked at events leading up to the general election in December 1918, which changed Ireland forever. Íde examined how these events played out in Fingal. She also looked at the two men, John J Clancy and Frank Lawless, who opposed each other on election day: one representing the past & the other the future. Íde, who joined the Committee of Balbriggan and District Historical Society this year, studied history in Maynooth University and has a Masters in Local History. She has worked for many years with Fingal Libraries and is now based in our local Balbriggan branch. Council draws down €3.7m for Home Loans Fingal County Council has received the highest amount of applications among the 31 Local Authorities for the Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan and has overseen a drawdown of over €3.7 million since the scheme commenced. Since the start of the scheme on February 1, Fingal County Council has received 340 applications and already 136 provisional loan approvals have been issued, of which 17 have been drawn down at a total value of €3,764,640. The Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan is a Government backed mortgage for first time buyers, available through the Local Authority, which can be used to purchase a new or second-hand property. A Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan provides up to 90 per cent of the market value of the property. The maximum loan amount is determined by where the property is located so in the Dublin region this has resulted in a maximum loan of €288,000 which, with the borrower providing the 10 per cent deposit of €32,000, facilitates the purchase of a property worth €320,000. To be eligible for a Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan a person must have an annual gross income of not more than €50,000 as a single applicant or not more than €75,000 combined as joint applicants. The maximum term on a loan is 30 years with the term calculated on the both the age of the oldest applicant and the payment capacity. There are three different products available over two terms of 25 and 30 years. The 25 year term has a fixed interest rate of two per cent. Any term greater than 25 years will result in a fixed interest rate of 2.25 per cent or a variable rate, starting at 2.25 per cent. To date the Council have declined 107 loan applications with the reasons for doing so varying from insufficient savings, to not demonstrating repayment capacity at the level they are looking to borrow. Around 10 per cent of those declined have subsequently seen their applications accepted following re-submission with additional information or re-arrangement of their financial circumstances. Flowers from Portrane for Royal Couple

A talented Portrane woman took Bloom by storm this year taking home the Gold Medal and Best in Show for her contemporary floral art design “ in homage to...” However, not long after her success in Bloom, Adrienne Flood got the opportunity to show off her talent by displaying floral creations at the British Ambassador’s residence ‘Glencairn’. Her creations took centre stage at the newly married British Royal couple Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle’s visit here in July. Adrienne created 12 pieces overall, one tricolour, two using the British flag colours and nine Black and white arrangements which were all contemporary designs. Adrienne had a wonderful experience and evening meeting many Irish celebrities including Amy Huberman and even the British Royal couple themselves! Over all it has been an exciting few months for Adrienne Flood who does her flower arrangements as a hobby. We look forward to seeing what she has in store for us next.”

Duo Chagall launches Farmleigh concerts

The series of Autumn Sounds Concerts was launched at Farmleigh on Friday, 10 August with the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Anthony Lavin attending. The Autumn Sounds Concert 2018 takes place

at the Ballroom in Farmleigh, Phoenix Park next month and brings together a team of international performers led by wellknown Fingal-based classical music group Duo Chagall. This is the eighth year that the group have directed Autumn

Sounds in Farmleigh. This year the concerts take place on September 14 and 21 (8pm).After four years of performing the chamber music of German composer Robert Schumann, Duo Chagall are dedicating this year’s edition to early20th century composer Claude Debussy to mark the centenary of his death. Speaking at the launch, Duo Chagall cellist Arun Rao said: This is a pretty unique tribute to French luminary Claude Debussy, complete with Clair de lune, Golliwog’s Cake-walk and the famous Dances for Chromatic Harp; there’s even going to be an Irish première: the opera Pelléas & Mélisande in a short instrumental version.” Violinist Gillian Williams, the series’ coDirector, added: “We have invited some superb musicians this year. As a native of Fingal, I think it is really something that we are now in a position to bring someone like Sivan Magen (21/09) to be our partner at the Ballroom. Obviously our long-term relationship with Fingal Arts and The Office of Public Works has been critical, but this year we must also thank The Arts Council of Ireland and the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec. Guide Dogs receive new van for North Dublin We in the Balbriggan\North County Dublin branch of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind were earlier this year approached by a family who wanted to make a very significant donation towards the work of the charity. The family concerned wanted to do something different than simply donating money. In our work to change the lives of the visually impaired or children with autism, we train puppies who will, over time, mature and become working dogs. The first critical stage of this training is the year spent with a puppy raiser. Many people throughout our area of North County Dublin volunteer to take puppies for a year with supervision and support from our local puppy raising supervisor Graham and head office in Cork. Supervisors like Graham need suitable transport to deliver those valuable puppies to their puppy raisers. With this in mind and the generosity of the family, Tom and Breege Oâ€™Neill Guide Dog Owners from Balbriggan were delighted to recently accept the keys of a Ford Transit Connect from Dave Langan of Ford Airside Swords. John Creedon visits multi-cultural Balbriggan

John Creedon visited Balbriggan in June as part of his The Road Less Travelled show and the programme was broadcast on RTE1 at 6.30pm on Sunday August 5th. In the series, John Creedon travels the scenic landscapes and streetscapes and brings to life the stories that lie beneath the tarmac and fields along the road less travelled. In this programme John travels from Dublin to Belfast and his first stop is in Balbriggan, where he visited a Pentecostal church and the “Taste of the Nations’ Food Fair” at the Balbriggan Summerfest. The town was basking in glorious sunshine on the day of his visit so the views were great. The day began with John attending his first Pentecostal mass and chatting to Pastor Elizabeth. Elizabeth is originally from Nigeria and for the last 8 years she has been living in Balbriggan, which she loves. She is a preacher in ‘The Redeemed Christian Church of God’ which is a Pentecostal church and denomination founded in Lagos, Nigeria and is one of the many new churches to come to Balbriggan in recent years. Pastor Elizabeth says the “Penticostal Church is not a religion it is a way of life. I say God says “I have come to give you life and in my absence the Holy Spirit will take care of you” – that is the doctrine of the church.” The next stop on John’s journey was the Balbriggan Summerfest which was in full swing during his visit and which celebrated its 10th Anniversary this year is a week-long community event. Here he rolled up his sleeves to help serve food with Balbriggan Integration Forum’s Betsy Abu who has recently won a Mayor’s award for her work in the Community, at the multi-cultural Taste of the Nations’ Food Fair.. The food fair featured foods Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Liberia, South Sudan, Poland, Ukraine,the Philippians Ethiopia and Libya. Fingal Social Democrats candidates for 2019 Local Elections Garrett Mullan

The Fingal Branch of the Social Democrats is proud to announce the nomination of Garrett Mullan and Paul Mulville, as candidates for the 2019 local elections. Speaking after the selection meeting, Mullan spoke of his excitement in presenting the Social Democrats to communities who are eager for change.According to Mullan, he is “delighted to be nominated and looks forward to meeting people over the coming months. Housing, social inclusion and our environment are the issues I want to bring to the council.” Mulville (Rush-Lusk) and Mullan (Balbriggan) are longstanding party members hoping to represent their respective local electoral areas. With a

history of local activism, we know both are eager to help tackle the wide range of issues affecting Fingal’s local communities. With an emphasis on grassroots campaigning in the coming year, both will be making themselves available to their communities, with Mulville, a sitting Councillor for the Swords ward. Tracey Carey, our Dail candidate for Fingal reiterated the branch’s delight in having two excellent local candidates. Hello again, this month I decided to give the guys a look in. So off I went headhunting in and out of the streets of Swords. I had heard of a big company called SK Biotek based on Swords Campus, Watery Lane. It’s a contract development and pharmaceutical manufacturing plant. It’s been operating for the last 50 years here in Swords and approximately 500 people work there. So, no better place to find five very cool male volunteers to transform into ‘The Sharply Dressed Man’. Within the company their employees and external partners include Chemists, Scientists, Engineers, Marketing, Quality Assurance personnel, just to mention a few. We went to meet them at their workplace, dressed in their work wear and took it from there. No doubt they were a little camera shy and would you blame them as it wasn’t their normal day’s work. We took a few shots in the head office then right across the road in their plant where all the very specialized manufacturing active pharmaceutical ingredients known as API takes place. They manufacture chemotherapy API, used in Cancer drug treatments. So I have total respect for these 14 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-SEPTEMBER 2018

amazing gents. After shooting them in their work place we popped into AB Formal Wear in Swords. Shop owner Rimas Gaucys has a huge collection of stylish suits and definitely something to meet every man’s taste. He personally fitted my models into suits that matched their looks and personality. He gave them their Va va voom and there you have it, as they looked pretty handsome all round. We then went on location to Swords Castle. What a stunning job Fingal County Council took on and finished leaving us with something so special to be very proud of; if your residing in Swords, like myself, it is well worth a visit. As you can see the restoration of the church is outstanding just like our ‘Sharply Dressed Men.’ Great fun and super personalities shine through in each photo. Congratulations gents it’s a winner. I would just like to finish-off by introducing each of them and say a huge thank you for such a fun day out with my super Tog Abe Neihum, he definitely made our cool men feel relaxed for the few hours we spent with them. Models include

Stephen Cassidy, Quality Control Manager, David Gargan, Maintenance Department, David Toner, Technical Service Operator, Jerry McEntee, Technical Service Operator and Damien Wall who works in one of the large scale manufacturing plants where SK manufactures diabetes and HIV drugs. Also I want to say a huge thank you to Global Communications Lead, Audraí O’Dwyer, who assisted us as this would not have been possible without her co-ordinating and convincing our super models to have a shot at becoming a model for the day. The big plus and good news is they have also agreed to model in my Style Warrior Fashion and Entertainment Show in aid of North East Cancer Research Education Trust, on Saturday 6th October in Wrights Venue. Spectacular ‘Style Warriors’ show in aid of NECRET

This years’ Style Warrior show is in aid of NECRET Cancer Research. The charity is headed by Professor Bryan Hennessy. He has two very valuable teams working in Beaumont Hospital and Drogheda Hospital. This is one fantastic charity as Cancer is probably one of the most frightening illnesses of our century and we really want to help as much as possible. The Charity will be selling raffle tickets on the night and we have some super prizes. As the date approaches so quickly, I would like to introduce you to our amazing show. For some time now we have been looking for volunteers to model guys, girls,ladies and gents fashion. We launched our official casting day recently on the 12th of August in Wrights venue. Mattress Mick came along with his supersize bed and interviewed models after they did the catwalk try out. A fantastic fun day was had by all. Michael Flynn / Mattress Mick has featured in the last two style Warrior shows and is loved by everybody as he is such a super gent. He will be taking to the catwalk again in October wearing an outfit from Louie Copeland of Capel Street. In fact Louie is on a promise to model his fab menswear himself. Tickets are now on sale now by using Paypal and we also have a facebook event page for more information. How losing weight can leave you with more money By Dave Kavanagh It’ll soon be that time of year again, where hoards of people are embarking on “healthier” lifestyles in order to lose excess weight, get fitter or at least fit into certain clothes that they used to fit into! It’s usually well intentioned, even if the method chosen sometimes leaves a lot to be desired. So let’s dispel a few myths while at the same time, showing you how you can have more money in your pocket/purse/bank account: DIETS DON’T WORK – Let’s start with the point that, unless you’ve been without television, radio or social media for your whole life, should be quite obvious by now. Diets do not work. Any short-term drastic change to your usual pattern of eating and drinking, is mostly unsustainable and therefore, will result in reverting back to old habits. 98% of people that lose weight this way, pile it back on again (with sometimes more than they had before they started!). Any plans that suggest your calorie intake should be below your basal metabolic rate (the minimum rate of calories required to simply function) is not a good idea (and that includes practically starving yourself for a few days!). The key to success is to make subtle lifestyle changes that are manageable and not a shock to your system. It could be removing white bread from your daily routine. The following week it could be cutting the amount of wine or beer you drink. The next week it could be only using stairs instead of lifts or escalators. One small change per week is 52 changes in a year. No, this won’t lead to you dropping a stone (6.36kg) in 5 days.

But if it drops 1/2 lb per week, that’s almost 2 stone in a year. This way, you are far more likely to keep the weight off as your new routine has slowly and gradually become the norm. To see what you need to do, keep a detailed (and honest) diary of food, drink and activity for 7 days. Make sure you include every little detail. Once this is done, it should be quite obvious where YOUR adjustments need to be made. Now, nobody is suggesting that you never drink again or order take-away food. Moderation is the point to note. But the things that could do with being cut down are often ones that can put a strain on your finances – additional beer/wine, pizzas, fizzy drinks (when water will do a much better job!) etc. If you are spending less on these things, then you have more money left over. This also extends to other aspects of a healthier lifestyle. How often do you drive to the shops when you really could have walked? Burning more calories and not using any petrol. Then, there are the health benefits. Statistically speaking, the closer you are to a healthy height/ weight ratio, the less likely you are to encounter weight related health

issues, therefore saving you the costs associated with dealing with these health issues. Overall, if you have a little patience and a desire to succeed efficiently, making these subtle changes can leave you healthier, closer to your ideal weight and with a few more euro left over each month. NEW COURSE TARGETS FOOD START-UPS

A new “Digital School of Food” has been launched, aimed at enabling food start-ups to grow and succeed. An initiative of the Dublin Food Chain and the Local Enterprise Offices in the Dublin region, the online programme for food entrepreneurs is the first of its kind in Europe. The new Digital School of Food is an e-learning initiative that targets food producers from idea through start-up and growth stages. It consists of an online platform that will help new and innovative food businesses to start-up and succeed. Supported by Enterprise Ireland, Bord Bia and the Dublin Institute of Technology, the project was born as a result of the strong interest among food entrepreneurs to learn about succeeding in business from key industry experts. Announcing the launch of the new platform, the Chair of the Network of Local Enterprise Offices, Oisin Geoghegan, highlighted the importance of cultivating the food sector. The Digital School of Food gives these entrepreneurs access to sound commercial guidance and mentoring to help them get their products onto shelves, and also gives emerging food entrepreneurs and those who want to begin their food production journey, practical support to bring their idea or product to life. The model is based on an e-learning platform which contains tips, advice and information from existing producers, all related to succeeding in the food sector. The programme is available to food businesses in the Dublin region initially following which it will be rolled out nationally. Fingal Girls Festival of Football

Fingal County Council, in partnership with the FAI, held the 2018 Fingal Girls Festival of Football on Saturday 18th August at the AUL Complex, Clonshaugh. The event was open to girls from U8-U13 and attracted over 50 teams with a total of 500 girls participating. The festival has been running for 16 years but this is the eighth running of the Girls Only festival run in tandem with the Powerchair Football section of the tournament, which took place on the same day in Gormanston Park. Paul Keogh, FAI/Fingal County Council Development Officer, said: “There was a great turnout today by girls teams from all over Fingal and indeed Dublin. We even had the Donegal League take part, which is a great indication of the appeal of this event that people will travel so far to play. This event gets bigger and better every year.” Senior Sports Officer of Fingal County Council, Niall McGuirk, stated: “The Fingal Festival of football continues to grow and evolve each year. We need to provide events like this to give girl’s more choice and opportunity when it comes to participation in sport and encourage clubs to continue to form girls’ teams to try and tackle female dropout rates from sport.” While the Fingal Festival of Football caters for both elite and community sections, the overall ethos remains the same in that it’s a community event providing a fun environment for young people to come together, while enjoying their sport and creating an opportunity for them to meet people from all over the country. After some nail-biting finals the Mayor presented the Harmony Cup, now named after the late Gerry Lynam, one of the founders of the tournament, to U13 Elite Winners: Glebe North FC. Runners-up were Cherry Orchard. The U13 Community Winners were Malahide Utd. Runners-up were Killegland FC. The U12 Elite Winners : Peamount Utd. The winners of the Powerchair Football, Midlands United received the Harmony Cup trophy from the acting Mayor of Fingal, Jimmy Guerin, after they defeated DCU in the final. Both teams will be representing Ireland later this year in Europe in the Powerchair Champions League.

Super Cereal Bars “Back to work, school or college after the Summer break may mean back to routine but it doesn’t have to mean back to bad habits! Autumn is the season for change and what better way to start the new school year than on a healthy note. A lot of cereal bars in shops are loaded with sugar which give an instant energy high but this is rapidly followed by an energy crash and cravings for more sweet foods. These cereal bars below are tasty but very satisfying and filling. Not to mention they are so simple to make and contain only 5 ingredients which are very commonplace in many homes. 18 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-SEPTEMBER 2018

Ingredients

Makes 15 bars • 500g muesli (No added sugar) • 200mls milk • 100g nut butter (Peanut/almond/ cashew etc.) • 4 tablespoons honey • 150g dark chocolate to coat on top

Method 1. Make a well in the centre of the muesli in a mixing bowl. Add the milk and using a knife make an ‘X’ in the mixture, mixing the milk into the muesli. 2. Add the honey and nut butter and combine together. 3. Spread onto a baking tray with grease proof paper and freeze for 4

hours or overnight. 4. Just before removing from the freezer, melt the dark chocolate and then spread it on top of the mixture. 5. Place the mixture back in the freezer for another hour. Make sure it is quite solid. Then cut it up and gobble up! Try store some in a lunchbox in the freezer so that they last the week!! Fingal County Council has been shortlisted in the 15th annual Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards for seven projects. The awards, sponsored by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government, are held to recognise and celebrate the outstanding work carried out by Local Authorities all over Ireland and will take place on Thursday, November 22 in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry Demesne.The shortlisted entries were in the following categories: Supporting Active Communities: Fingal Kaleidoscope Intergenerational Project (Seniors and Four Year Olds) Heritage and Built Environment: The Conservations, Management and Promotion of Fingal County Council’s Heritage Properties

Since the awards’ inception in 2004, Fingal County Council has been nominated in various categories 52 times, has won 10 awards and has been named Local Authority of the Year twice, most recently in 2016. Speaking on the announcement of the nominations, Mayor of Fingal Cllr. Anthony Lavin said: “I am very pleased that seven Fingal County Council projects have been selected for shortlisting in the prestigious Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards. Opportunities such as these which highlight the dedication, innovation and commitment of Fingal County Council are always welcome and I wish all the finalists involved in bringing these projects to completion the very best of luck in the competition in November.” Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid said: “I very much welcome the nominations for this year’s awards which recognise our ongoing commitment to tourism and economic development, the wellbeing of our citizens and the improvement of amenities throughout the County. Wherity boys on track to success

By Rebecca Daly Two young children from the Balbriggan area are making their mark on the mini moto circuit in Ireland. Max, (8) and Finnan (9), Wherity began riding motor bikes when they were three years old. The Wherity boys are from a biking-obsessed family, as their dad Shane used to race too. Nowadays, however, Shane spends most of his time training his sons and servicing the bikes during races. The boys are already being placed high in races both here in Ireland and in the UK with Finnan h becoming the Irish champion this year. Their mother, Jane, describes UK racing as being “on a different scale”. She said: “Over there they race on tracks and Finnan is obviously new to such tracks so for him to have won is just amazing.” Max too is a high achiever and was placed second in the Motorcycle Championship to his big brother Finnan. The boys have even started racing on larger bikes with gears, which means that Finnan is now racing against boys who are thirteen years old. Every Tuesday, Max and Finnan practice on the Whiteriver Park track in Collon, County Louth where they test each other’s strengths and weaknesses. As a rider, Finnan is very quick and breaks track records when he’s on his own while Max on the other hand is very aggressive, with a great ability to overtake anyone. Jane explained that the Mini Moto Racing Club Ireland is very family orientated “It’s as much a sport for the dads as it is for the kids. It’s just a family atmosphere. However, it can also be very competitive and stressful, with even every millisecond counting. It’s not only the rider, it’s down to the dad or the mechanic to have the bike set up to perfection. Everything has to work to get the kids to where they are.” The boys someday hope to become professionals like their idols Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez. Robbie Cannon wins AIG Irish Close

Balbriggan Golf Club’s Robbie Cannon had a feeling and Robbie Cannon was right. He loves The European Club because it’s a test of course management, mental and physical stamina, and ball-striking prowess. Few amateurs, especially those that work full time, dedicate as much of their free time to the game as the 39year old strength and conditioning coach from Balbriggan. So it was no huge surprise that he added the AIG Irish Amateur Close to his expanding resumé with a 2 and 1 win over Killiney and Wentworth’s Eoin Leonard recently. With the 2009 South of Ireland and 2013 Irish Amateur Open titles already on his mantelpiece, he’s now halfway to the career Grand Slam, or as his pals have dubbed it, “the Cannon Slam”. “Two good friends of mine, a former coach Seamus Duffy and Matt McAlpin, they call it the Cannon Slam,” a beaming Cannon said. “I’m halfway to winning all six. It’s definitely a realistic ambition now. The North, where he reached the last 16 in 2013, is another event he enjoys but for now, he’s basking in the glory and hoping to be called up for international duty for Ireland again after surprisingly failing to get selected five years ago after winning the Irish Amateur Open in a playoff at Royal Dublin. “To be honest, 2013 when I won the Irish Amateur and I didn’t get picked, that was probably the hardest pill I’ve ever had to swallow,” he said. “ I am very, very happy,” he said. “I’m very grateful for winning.” He added: “I’ve got to thank Nigel Howley, the pro in Balbriggan, he’s done a lot of work with me on my putting in the last couple of years. He’s turned me from a poor putter into a good putter. The Ruddys have always been really kind to me,” he said. “I remember them giving me a round for free after Harrington won one of the PGAs. It’s great down here, I’ve always loved it and I always will.”
