Balbriggan musicians set for Groove School

As part of the Balbriggan Socio-Economic Regeneration Strategy, Fingal County Council and Dublin City University have partnered to bring the Boston-based Berkley Music School’s Groove School programme to Ireland in August. Thirty-nine of the 100 places on the three-day

programme have been given to students from Balbriggan’s Loreto Secondary School and Ardgillan Community College and the students will be involved in a concert on August 3 at the culmination of the course. The Groove School program offers participants

access to the Berklee method of music education, encompassing theory, ear training, improvisation, ensemble performance, and instrumental instruction. During the programme, participants will also have the opportunity to audition to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston.“This is a wonderful opportunity for the students from Balbriggan to improve their musical education and is a result of an initiative by the Balbriggan Leadership Group to assist local musicians in realising their potential and getting the most from their talents,” said Brian MacCraith who is Chairman of the Balbriggan Leadership Group. The workshop will take place on three consecutive days from August 1 Wednesday–Friday, and will generally run from 10am to 5pm although there may be additional evening events at the discretion of the programme organisers.Groove School will present sessions in lecture and master class formats. The lecture sessions will enable students to learn about various performance skills and techniques centred on groove and style while the master classes allow students to put them into practice. The overall purpose of the Balbriggan Leadership Group is to develop a long-term socio-economic strategy for Balbriggan. The leadership group will oversee the preparation, drafting and agreement of the strategy which will be finalised and delivered in Autumn 2018.

We need volunteers urgently!

Friends of Autism/ADHD Ltd are urgently looking for volunteers to help us in all of our Charity Shops. Two shops are located in Laurena House , 40 Dublin Street , Balbriggan (furniture store and clothes store) , one shop is located at Unit C6 (outer ring) Millfield shopping Centre Balbriggan and the fourth shop is located at 21 Thomas Hand Street , Skerries. Volunteers are needed to cover either a morning shift or an afternoon shift, but any time you can give would be appreciated. Our Millfield shop is open on a Thursday 12-8, Friday 11-5 and Saturday 11-5, the other stores are open Monday-Friday 10 am to 5pm and Saturday 11am to 5pm. A sample of the duties involved include sorting donations, displaying of stock, till work, and helping customers with their purchases. The furniture store would also require help with van deliveries and collections. Any training needed will be provided, and we promote a healthy, happy all-inclusive working environment. Cultural Heritage Week in Balbriggan 2018 is the European Year of Cultural Heritage, a year of cultural activities and events taking place all over Europe to get people interested in their heritage. Cultural heritage is the fabric of our societies and our lives; it is the buildings in our towns and cities, the landscape and geography that surrounds us and the history we share. National Heritage week will take place from 18th to 26th August 2018. On Sunday 26th August Balbriggan Tourism will hold a talk by the local historian and researcher David Sorensen. ‘Boom and Bust: The Cotton Mills of Balbriggan 1770 – 1870’ will chronicle the history of cotton milling that transformed Balbriggan from a sleepy fishing hamlet to a thriving industrial town. In the late 1770s Balbriggan was at the forefront of cotton production in Ireland. Alas it was not to last. This talk is free and everyone is welcome. STEAM Education at Balbriggan E T school

An educational initiative designed to increase students’ interest in maths, science and engineering has been completed in Balbriggan Educate Together National School. The STEAM education programme is designed for students in fifth and sixth class. It aims to increase awareness of a wide variety of

careers available in STEAM sectors (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) from an early age. These include life science, pharma, biomedical engineering, technology, financial, civil, construction, engineering, and many other related fields. The innovative programme matches STEAM

experts who work in the finance, industrial, pharmaceutical and engineering sectors with primary school teachers and their classes for ten weeks. During this period, students engage with maths, science and engineering in a fun and stimulating environment.These experts include employees from companies such as Alexion, AIB, Stripe, Poppulo, DePuy Synthes, Sisk, BAM and ARUP. They work with primary school teachers to implement different elements of the STEAM programme, such as Science-in-a-box, Engineering-in-a-Box and Maths-in-a-box weekly. Deputy Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Grainne Maguire said: “The STEAM Education programme allows students to discover science, technology, engineering and maths in an exciting and inspiring way. Stephenstown Link Road is on schedule

The Balbriggan Leadership Group has welcomed the news that work on the Stephenstown Link Road is on schedule and due to be completed in November 2018. The Leadership Group recently held its second meeting since its formation and was given an update on the Link Road which will run from the existing roundabout on the Stephenstown Road, through the site and through a roundabout on Clonard Hill Road, linking to the back of Millfield and then on to the Naul Road.The road is a key piece of infrastructure

development within Balbriggan as it will open up almost 23 hectares of industrially-zoned lands for development with the potential to bring 900 new jobs to the area. Fingal County Council owns 22.84 Hectares of land within Stephenstown of which 10.2 Hectares are zoned as General Employment, in the 2017-2023 County Development Plan with the remaining lands zoned as High Technology. Brian MacCraith, Chairman of the Balbriggan

Leadership Group, said: “This is another very good initiative aimed at improving Balbriggan and will greatly assist in the economic development of the town. Cllr Gráinne Maguire, Deputy Mayor of Fingal, said: “It has been shown already in Balbriggan that the availability of fully serviced sites is a major advantage when it comes to persuading firms to set up in the area and this project has the potential to deliver jobs for our community.”

happened in St Cronan’s N.S .Brackenstown and Santa Sabina Sutton. I have made many trips to Santa Sabina N.S. over the years and this year we made them a small presentation of a guide dog trophy for the school. The picture attached shows Anna Giblin a branch member presenting a special award from Irish Guide Dogs to some of 1st Year students on April 9th. She was invited to attend their morning assembly where they presented her with a donation of €200 for Irish Guide Dogs as part of their CSPE Action Project. On the weekend of Saturday and Sunday 9th of September our branch of guide dogs Balbriggan\ north county Dublin will be taking up a church gate collection outside all of the following churches in the North County. 14,000 Carers to get GP Visit cards – Senator Reilly Fine Gael Senator James Reilly, has welcomed the passing of the Health (General Practitioner Service) Bill 2018 through the Seanad. The legislation will enable an estimated 14,000 carers to have access to free GP care though the provision of a GP visit Card.As of June 2018 77,384 people receive Carers Allowance and 2,747 people receive Carers Benefit. Currently 17% of those carers are not entitled to a GP visit card and the proposed legislation, which passed through the Seanad recently, aims to extend that cover to those individuals. Senator Reilly said: “Carers play an important role in their communities in the provision of care for their loved-ones. This legislation seeks to extend that cover so that the 17% of carers that did not have access to free GP Care will now be included. I welcome all measures that seek to lessen the burden on those who undertake the role of a carer, including the announcement last year of an additional €10 million funding for respite care. I also urge the Minister for Health to engage with the Doctors organisations so that more services can be provided to Patients. The Minister needs to provide the adequate and meaningful funding, staff and resources so that Primary Care practices and GPs Nurses and other staff can care for our community in their communities. I expect that this measure will move through the Dáil promptly to ensure that carers are able to avail of the benefits as and from the 1st of September,” said Senator Reilly a practicing GP in North Dublin.

Rented accommodation and income protection By Dave Kavanagh There are obvious differences between those that have mortgages and own their homes and those that rent their accommodation, such as getting a deposit together to purchase a property and qualifying for a mortgage, versus being able to move location at relatively short notice. For those in rented accommodation, there are a few other points worth considering: If someone owns their property and runs into temporary, financial difficulty, for example an injury or illness that keeps them off work for a while, there are arrangements that can be made with their lender for a short term, leaving them in a position where there is no immediate impact on their living arrangements. However, for those renting privately, if the same event occurred, they would most likely be evicted if they could not pay rent on time and in full. When someone cannot work due to illness or injury, depending on their employer, they may be paid for a certain period of time, they may be paid “at the employer’s discretion” or they may not be paid at all. Yet, ironically, a higher proportion of people that own their homes have things like income protection or specified illness cover in place. One of the reasons for this, is that at the time of going through a mortgage

application process, they are usually exposed to some degree of financial advice, whether from the lender, a broker, or a financial adviser, who may have made them aware of the options available to protect against the unexpected loss of income (or the financial impact of a serious illness). Having not gone through this process, many of those renting are not aware of these same options, despite being more vulnerable in rented accommodation. Another school of thought is that people who are making a commitment to purchase their own home, are more likely to plan for such events so that their long-term plans of owning their home mortgage-free, are not compromised. Whereas those in rented accommodation may not have given the same consideration to their long-term financial security. In the current climate of expensive rents and very limited property vacancies, the impact on anyone in rented accommodation suffering a loss of income is even more problematic. It’s well worth taking a little time to consider how you would be impacted and investigate what options there are for you. In basic terms, the earlier (younger) someone commences income protection and/or serious illness cover, the cheaper the premiums will be. Income protection will pay a portion of someone’s income if they are unable to work due to illness or injury and suffer a loss of income, after a deferred period and until they can return to work. Specified illness cover will pay out a tax-free

Butler disappointed at Mens Sheds funding cuts Cllr Darragh Butler has said he is very disappointed to learn the Government are to cut funding for Mens Sheds. He said in a recent statement, “ As someone who has seen the excellent contribution that the Men’s Shed groups are making in Swords, Balbriggan and north County Dublin, reports that their funding is to be cut is very disappointing. As my Cork North West colleague Margaret Murphy O’Mahony stated in the Dail recently, a 7% cut to funding to the Irish Men’s Sheds Association will severely hamper the organisation’s ability to support men and will limit the positive impact that they have on our society by limiting their ability to grow and set up in additional locations.” Deputy Murphy O’Mahony was commenting after receiving a parliamentary reply to a question she asked following concerns raised with her by a number of local men’s sheds bodies. She said,“The HSE has informed me that a cut of €18,700 has been ordered following a decision of the Government to apply cuts to Section 39 Grant Aid Funding and to the Health and Wellbeing Division. This will have an impact on the ability of the national association to support local men’s sheds clubs across the country. Enhanced funding had been secured for 2017 but the cut to its 2018 budget is really damaging as it scuppers the ability of the organisation to plan for expansion..Anything we can do to reach this highly vulnerable group of people that all too often are do not discuss challenges they face must not be limited by funding cuts.It’s disappointing that cuts made by Fine Gael in government are seeing reductions which will inhibit the ability of great organisations such as the Men’s Sheds Association. They must be reversed if we are to properly deal with isolation amongst the most vulnerable in our country,” concluded Murphy O’Mahony.

Drogheda is putting the final touches to its Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann preparations ahead of what is expected to be the biggest event in the towns history this coming August. A full programme of events has been announced for the forthcoming Fleadh. Among those performing are Martin Hayes & Denis Cahill, Hothouse Flowers, Damien Dempsey and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra to name just a few. Chairperson of the Fleadh Executive Committee Lolo Robinson said, “This will be a Fleadh to remember, we have been working tirelessly in ensure that Drogheda and County Louth will reap the benefits of this international celebration of music, dance and Irish language”. 14 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-AUGUST 2018

Lolo Robinson commended the hard work, commitment and professionalism of the many voluntary groups, particularly the people of Drogheda for the enthusiasm shown as Drogheda gets Fleadh ready. Attracting more than 400,000 attendees, the Fleadh is the world’s largest celebration of Irish music, language, song and dance. It attracts close to twice the number of people who attended the Irish Ploughing Championships 2017. Drogheda is expected to reap huge economic benefits from the week-long event, its estimated that €40m will flow into County Louth as a result of the festival. The longer term benefits

will include increased awareness of Drogheda and County Louth as a tourist destination and forging strong community ties. Mega Mango Chilli Chicken Salad “This recipe is bursting full of colour and flavour and suits this Summery time of year as it is a light but tasty and satisfying meal. The marinated chicken is so succulent and the chilli kick complements the sweetness of the mango and the crunchy freshness of the fruit and vegetables in the salad. It can be made for a BBQ or for an evening meal and leftovers can be enjoyed the following day for lunch!

Ingredients

• 8 cherry tomatoes, cut into halves • 4 handfuls salad leaves • 1 mango, skin removed and cut into chunks • 60g pine nuts • Juice of 1 lime For the chicken marinade • 2 tablespoons Chilli powder • 1 tablespoon Paprika • Pinch of black pepper • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Serves 2

Method

• 3 chicken fillets, diced • 2 peppers, cut into strips • 1 red onion, cut into slices • 1/2 large cucumber, cut into half slices • 110g beetroot, cut into small chunks • 2 chillies, sliced

1. Mix the above marinade ingredients really well in a bowl. Add the diced chicken and cover in the marinade. Leave to one side. 2. Prepare the salad ingredients as described in the ingredients list except

for the lime juice and assemble the cut/sliced vegetables and fruit in the serving dish. 3. Cook the marinated chicken on a BBQ, grill or in a pan. 4. Add the cooked chicken to the prepared salad. Pour the lime juice on top and mix to distribute evenly. Enjoy! Mum and daughter fashion shopping in Swords

By Fashion Editor Carina Cunningham Welcome guys and girls to ‘Community Local’s’ first Mum and daughter day out shopping shoot. I had asked in past if any of you out there would like to be styled. Anna Waters took me up on the offer and in fact emailed me asking if I could go shopping with herself and her lovely daughter Ciara. So we took it one step further and decided to do a photo shoot in one of the local fashion shops. Anna and Ciara both live in Swords so The Pavilions was the obvious choice. Anna is in her early forties and Ciara is nineteen, they are both stunning ladies and great fun to style. I chose the Vila fashion store mainly because their shop window is always so well co-ordinated and the colours are very striking. The way they colour block them with denim playing a relaxed part and their mixing up layers is very clever and ageless. These looks really can be worn from young to older lady. In fact teamed up with a posh hat they could be worn to the races or even a casual wedding. Their sizes are very user friendly

and look stunning on curvy ladies also. We enjoyed going a little crazy taking photos in the shop window, at the fitting rooms, and even in front of the Vila light up image in-store boxes. It was a great day all round and very pleasurable shopping. Thestaff in Vila really do know how to team up their collection to create super relaxed colourful outfits from their extensive stock. We were lucky to have Ava ‘s attention and direction on what works for all ages shapes and figures. I think she hit the nail on the head here and guided us very successfully. Over the next few months I will be doing a face and hair transformation plus a few good men getting into flashy threads and looking sharp. Until next time, many thanks, Vila and to Anna and Ciara. DONABATE/PORTRANE

It seems hard to credit that another year has rolled by already and here we are at festival time again. The 4th annual Donabate/Portrane Summer Festival will take place from Thursday 9th to Sunday 12th August and we have a packed programme for you all to enjoy this year. We start with the Festival 2018 launch on Thursday 9th August in the Waterside House Hotel featuring the FESTIVAL X-FACTOR. This is a chance for local musicians, group or individual, to showcase their talents and compete for a prize of €500 ( kindly sponsored by SuperValu, Donabate) The competition is open to age 16+ (under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian) and the judges decision is final. The judges this year include Linzi from Santoria and Rory O’Connor of Rorys’ Stories Your friends and family also have a say in this as we will be running a voting system to accompany the judges opinions, so bring all the fan club as every vote counts ! The hotel shuttle bus will be running on the night. Check the festival Facebook page for details of the competition, and the bus times. On Friday the action moves to

the Festival Marquee where Joe Daly, magician extraordinaire, will entertain and amaze at the childrens party ( 4-12 yo.) from 3 to 4pm. The Fun Fair on the green will be up and running then with loads to keep every age happy. Friday night it’s the adults turn to take over the Marquee with Irelands definitive tribute band ‘LIVE FOREVER OASIS’ who will rock you back to the ninetys and noughtys at 10pm. They will be ably supported at 8pm by Donabates’ finest cover band ‘DB Sound Collective’ Saturday sees an action-packed funfilled day—starting in the Hockey club pitch at Ballisk with a hockey skills bonanza for 5 to 12 yo from 10 to 11,30am. At 10.30am in Portrane SWIM IRELAND will be hosting Open Sea races for all the family, see page 34 in the festival brochure for details. In Newbridge House walled garden Alice in Wonderland will be entertaining the family with a Mad Hatters Tea Party from 12md to 2pm. Come and meet the Queen of Hearts, the magical Cheshire Cat and of course the Wonderland Rabbit ! Dinny Collins and his crew will be there to provide some fun fitness games for all the family.

SUMMER FESTIVAL 2018

From 2 to 5pm the Progressive Credit Union, Donabate is holding a Childrens Funtime in their carpark with Bouncy Castles, garden games, face-painting and lots more. In Portrane at 2pm the winners of the Festival X-Factor, and the next two top acts, will take to the Festival Stage on the green to entertain you. Then from 3 to 5pm the AFTERNOON TEA DANCE takes place in the Festival Marquee with music by Stage Two; entry to this event includes a beautiful afternoon tea. Saturday night it’s time to dust off the Stetsons and buff up the boots for a hootenanny country and western hoedown with the brilliant ‘HALFWAY THERE’. There are prizes for the best dressed cowboy and cowgirl so get that clobber on ! Sunday 12th is the fantastic FAMILY FUN DAY on the GREEN. There’s a Craft Fair in the Marquee Corvenieos Circus is in town complete with the Mini Roadster and the Unicycle.New this year is the Light Chaser Game... for both kids and grown-ups to test their speed and agility in 30 & 60 second games. There’s Crazy Golf,

Wooly Wards Petting Farm (kindly sponsored by Country Crest), Bingo, Sports for All. And new to the green this year is the Queen of the Beach Olive with her Secrets of the Seashore pop-up beach. The kids will enjoy the arts and crafts tent and Orla Finn will be doing some family fitness fun. There’s a food village or you can rest your legs for a while and take the open-top bus tour from the green up to Tower Bay with Cathal on board to tell you all about the points of interest along the way. We have a special treat in store for you all on Sunday night in the Festival Marquee with the brilliant ‘CAMEMBERT QUARTET’ (the Late Late Show band). There will be a short break at 10pm so that you can all enjoy the fabulous FESTIVAL FIREWORKS FINALE. The Camembert Quartet are kindly sponsored by The Brook Pub who host the bar for all events in the Festival Marquee. What a fantastic weekend at the European Baton Twirling Championships in Gormanston recently with clubs from Dublin, Cork, Slovenia and Catalonia and local Club St. Maryâ€™s Baton Twirlers with athletes from Balscadden, Drogheda, Balbriggan, Skerries, Stamullen, Bellewstown, Julianstown and Mornington. 30 athletes entered 21 events and took medals and trophies in 9 of them.

European Championships

Celebrations continued on the Sunday evening in Whytes Stamullen with the 6 coaches and 27 of the 30 strong squad with party with their brothers and sisters and family. The coaches thanked the parents for the gift, card and cake. Also just recently the good news continued when the Club Directors were contacted by

Deputy Mayor of Fingal Grainne Maguire and were invited to a reception in the Bracken Court Hotel with Grainne and other local Councillors Anthony Murphy and Malachy Quinn to accept trophy for the Best Marching Group in uniform at the 2018 St Patrick’s Day Parade in Balbriggan. Currently the club have approximately 70
