July is the month when photos move outdoors - and Fingal offers many chances to make memories - beaches, parks, festivals and more. It is also the time when photos are ruined by what brought us out to play in the first place - the sunshine. Here’s a few easy tips to get better results this Summer. It seems counter-intuitive but a bright sunny day is often a terrible time to get photos of family and friends. Not only do the conditions force your loved ones to squint into the lens, but the harsh light also creates dark, distracting shadows on their faces. Set your camera or phone to ‘auto-flash’ and check the results frequently. One advantage of bright sunshine is that it lets you take action shots quickly and, hopefully, will freeze the scene in perfect detail. Get in as close as you can - the more you zoom in the more you will experience camera shake. When you are taking photos of your children get down to their level! It works a dream. Remember, digital photography is free so make full use of your ‘Burst’ photo opton - it’s always great to have a choice. And, just because you are snapping away, don’t forgot to make sure you have some protection from the sunshine - there’s nothing quite like sunburn to ruin your day!

Bremore Castle

Big Dig 2017

Ever wanted to get your hands dirty in an archeological dig? This year Fingal County Council is organising a community dig at Bremore castle in Balbriggan -digging in the walled garden of this 16th century fortified house. It is hoped to uncover information about the layout of gardens and to answer questions about what was here before the castle was built. Is this where St Mologa introduced bee-keeping to Ireland? Could there be the remains of an older castle here? Did Cromwell attack the house with 4

cannonballs? ‘There is so much we want to discover about Bremore Castle’ said Community Archaeologist Christine Baker ‘and to do this we need people to come and dig’. The community excavation will be underway for two weeks between 14th to the 28th July 2017, every day except Mondays. It is open to everyone over 18 to take part and don’t worry if you’re not up to digging, there are other ways to get involved from to sieving for finds to washing and cataloguing what has been unearthed.

‘It certainly is a different way to become involved’ said Parks Superintendent Kevin Halpenny. ‘We’ve had a number of different events here at Bremore Castle, but I’m especially excited to be uncovering the secrets of our walled garden’. A team of archaeologists will be on hand to train and guide participants so don’t worry if you’ve never been on an archaeological dig before. Scheme for School Clothing and Footwear

The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance scheme for 2017 is now open for applications. The budget provision for the 2017 scheme is €37.4 million and eligible families will receive a once-off payment to assist them with the extra costs incurred when children start school in September 2017. The rates of payment are €100 for children between the age of 4 and 11 years and €200 for children over 12 years of age. “I encourage all local parents of school children to examine their entitlements”, said Cllr Tony Murphy (Ind). Application forms for this scheme are available from: www.welfare.ie

Fingal Artists Represent Ireland in Tokyo Fest

Two young Fingal artists, both winners in the annual Texaco Children’s Art Competition, are to have their winning works exhibited at the International High School Arts Festival which takes place in Tokyo in August. The Tokyo exhibition, now in its 18th year, is described as ‘a showcase for the world’s best young artistic talent’. It will feature some 400 pieces by students representing nations across the world. The two Fingal artworks chosen amongst the five that will represent Ireland at the event are ‘Love Is’ by Nicole Halpin from Malahide Community School and ‘The Face’ by Wiktoria Anna Witkowska from Loreto College, Balbriggan. James Twohig, Director of Ireland Operations for Valero, who market fuel in Ireland under the Texaco brand, said that works selected to represent Ireland “embody content that will attract viewers and promote the cultural and scenic features for which we are renowned globally.” Sponsored by the International Foundation for Arts and Culture, the exhibition will take place in Tokyo’s National Arts Centre, one of Japan’s most highly regarded galleries.

Local plan seeks to tackle drink abuse

The North Dublin Regional Drug & Alcohol Task Force held a community meeting in the Bracken Court hotel in Balbriggan in mid-June June with the aim to develop the North Dublin Regional Plan to address the issue of alcohol abuse. A roundtable discussion was opened by Darragh Oâ€™Brien TD and chaired by Paula Leonard, the National lead for the Community

Action on Alcohol Programme. Paula stressed that the issue is not the occasional and moderate drinking of alcohol as part of life and celebration, but rather the widespread and serious abuse of alcohol as a substance in our society. She said there are three alcohol related fatalities in Ireland daily. Moreover, there are 100,000 people in Ireland with brain injuries resulted from

excessive consumption of alcohol. In addition Irish women top the statistics with the highest rate of drinking when pregnant. This roundtable meeting offered a forum for community consultation which will lead into the process of tackling the issues of alcohol abuse locally. While the forum did not offer any quick fix solutions, it presented an opportunity to discuss how members of the public feel personally affected by the consequences of alcohol abuse such as anti-social behaviour, environmental issue and exposure of children to alcohol. The Balbriggan CAF is chaired by Cllr Tony Murphy, who noted that, in a town like Balbriggan with 12,000 teenagers and where many of the community services are run by volunteers, the available and appropriate social services are lacking and adequate supports need to be accelerated. The availability and cheap price of drink goes hand in hand with antisocial behaviour and negatively impacts on everyone in the community. The established Community Alcohol Forum will lobby for supports to change attitudes towards alcohol in our society and influence the regional plan.

Mega Mangolicious Ice-cream

Method Ingredients • 2 mangos (frozen chopped without skin) • 2 bananas (frozen chopped without skin) • 4 tablespoons vanilla strained/greek style yogurt (Tip: The strained/greek style yogurt has a thick, creamy consistency and is also high in protein)

There are many variations for the below recipe but I have kept it nice and simple. It is mega refreshing, smooth, creamy and provides a nice dose of vitamin C, potassium and calcium which in addition to Vitamin D from the sun will help to keep bones and teeth strong and healthy. Tip: Mangos are relatively cheap at the moment. Make sure they are soft as it will make them easier to cut and blitz up! Method to mangoliciousness! 1. Blitz the frozen mango and banana in a powerful blender for a few minutes until it starts to become smooth. 2. Add in the vanilla yogurt spoon by spoon, mixing gently in between and until you achieve a nice soft scoop consistency. 3. Gobble it up or freeze it for later....if you can resist! Quiz for Guide Dogs Balbriggan\North County Dublin Branch of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind held a very successful table quiz in the Milestone Lounge on Tuesday night 30th of May to kick off their part in the Balbriggan Summer Festival. A total of €765 was made on the night. In many quizzes there are picture rounds and as this quiz was for guide dogs the quiz master Jim Walsh felt there might be some visually impaired or blind people there so he stuck in a round on dogs in general instead. On Sunday 4th June the branch had a brand new Ford Focus at their stand to sell tickets at €5 for it per line for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blindwww.guidedogs.ie.
