Hello and welcome to Balbriggan Local Magazine.. We really hope you enjoy it! We hope to bring you news each month from your local clubs, schools, committees and societies, to keep you up to date on what’s happening locally. March is traditionally considered as the month to celebrate being Irish across the world. Perhaps surprisingly St. Patrick’s Day only became a national holiday here in 1903 - and to prevent too much enjoyment of the day all pubs were ordered to remain closed! It was not until 1931 that the first ‘official’ St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held in Dublin. While St. Patrick would be surprised and amazed at many of the changes in Ireland since his time, he would recognise something that has never changed - community spirit. Without it our lives would be much poorer, we would be more isolated both from neighbours and from the wider community, and many of the little things we take for granted would be noticeable by their absence - a good example being Tidy Towns. We are here to help you spread the news about your community events big and small, and if we have not heard from you yet please get in touch and tell us your news so we can spread your good stories to all of the community. Thanks to all the businesses who supported us in our first edition, and we ask all our new readers to please support them too. Let’s work together to make it better! Proposed Changes Worry Firemen

Independent councillors Tony Murphy and Grainne Maguire recently met with firemen at Balbriggan Fire Station to hear first-hand how they feel about the proposed decision at last month’s announcement of a HSE/city council review of Dublin’s ambulance service . They believe that lives will be lost if a decision is made not to allow the local fire service attend at medical emergencies in the North Fingal area. that lives will be lost. Balbriggan is the busiest retained fire service in the country, and 50% of all calls are for medical emergencies. “There are serious implications for Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush and Lusk and the greater North Fingal area if this plan is implemented,” noted Cllr. Murphy. “It beggars belief that the Fire Brigade with trained paramedics would not attend medical emergencies when there is no local ambulance service available.” “The nearest ambulance service available is based in Swords. I will be supporting any initiative taken to try and overturn this decision and if anything we need an increased service in the north Fingal area due to the population increase over the last ten years,” he concluded. 4

On the road with Foróige

A Foróige group from Balbriggan youth service has won the opportunity to walk the Camino de Santiago in Spain after creating a 5 minute video explaining why they should be chosen to go on a once in a lifetime experience. The group is made up of young people from Foróige clubs, North Fingal GYDP, CUIS drug & alcohol project and ALP, the alternative learning programme. Andy Neary, Foróige senior youth officer will be travelling to Spain with the group from April 11-18. “This is the opportunity of a lifetime for these young people. A number of walking hikes are scheduled to prepare the group for the long road ahead,” he says. “We have participated in team building events in Carlingford Adventure Centre and Glendalough which helped build relationships within the group. We are also busy planning a number of fundraising events, organising Spanish lessons and setting up a Camino super hero’s website to promote the trip.” The group will walk 25-30km per day whilst carrying their bags, starting at Pamplona and finishing up in Santo Domingo de la Calzada. “This is also a fantastic reward for the accompanying volunteers,” says Any. “They give so much of their time to Balbriggan youth service enabling young people’s development. I’m delighted for everyone involved and I believe this experience will have a very positive impact on the development of young people and Balbriggan community.” The Camino is not just a religious or spiritual pilgrimage but it is also a very unique cultural experience as well as an opportunity for the young people to take time out from their busy life and to walk in a relaxed manner, 6

they will take the time to walk together, reflect, support and enjoy an unforgettable experience. Engaging with other people on the way will help them to understand different cultures, beliefs and experiences. Foróige is the leading youth organisation in Ireland and has been working with young people since 1952. Foróige’s overarching aim is to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their development and in the development of society. Official Opening Castleland Community Centre

The official opening of Castleland Community Centre, Balbriggan took place last month. It was officially opened by the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, in the company of Paul Reid, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council and Paddy Lavelle, CEO, Dublin and Dún Laoghaire Education Training Board. Castleland Community Centre was built in 2015 as part of the Fingal Schools Model and opened to the community in 2016. It offers a wide range of activities and facilities community use - meeting rooms, dance studio, sports hall and an allweather pitch available for classes or training purposes. The Centre is located adjacent to Ardgillan Community College which shares the sports hall and the all-weather pitch with the Community Centre. In line with the Shared Facility Initiative this will ensure that this state of the art facility will be utilised to its full potential. Strong communities are a source of social support and well-being 8

for the people who live in them. It is vital therefore that communities have dedicated spaces for people to meet, convene, discuss and play. Fingal County Council has a major role to play in developing these communities of Fingal, and in particular newer communities like Castleland, through the work of the Community Culture & Sports Division. Speaking at the launch Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler said “I am delighted to officially open this great facility which is another example of the huge investment by Fingal County Council in community facilities in Balbriggan in recent years including, Flemington Community Centre, and the Bremore All Weather Facility.” Paul Reid, Chief Executive Fingal County Council said “I wish to compliment Nuala O’Connor and the other centre managers and Fingal County Council community staff for the excellent work they do in bringing these facilities to life as a resource for all the

community. Fingal County Council is committed to maximising the economic and tourism potential of Balbriggan and facilities such as this also help foster a vibrant community in the town” Paddy Lavelle, Chief Executive Officer Dublin and Dún Laoghaire ETB welcomed the facility saying “Community Centres such as this play a vital role in bringing people together from all ethnic and social backgrounds, in a shared space where they can make connections

leading to lasting relationships, and through those strong communities.” The Board of Directors of Fingal Community and Recreation Services have engaged Acacia Facilities Management to oversee the operation of the community facility on behalf of Fingal County Council. The Community Centre is available for hire to the community directly through Castleland Community Centre and will be available according to demand.

Fingal County Council Announce 2017 Artists’ Support Scheme for professional Fingal Artists Fingal County Council has announced the 2017 Artists’ Support Scheme. The funding allows professional artists to avail of an award towards travel/professional development opportunities, a residency, or towards the development of work. The objective of the Artists’ Support Scheme is to support individual professional artists from Fingal to develop their artistic practice. The purpose of the award is to provide artists with the time and resources to think, research, reflect and engage with their artistic practice. The award is open to practising artists at all stages in their professional careers working in music, visual art, drama, literature & dance. To be eligible to apply, applicants must: have been born, have studied, or currently reside in the Fingal administrative area. Speaking about the award, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council Paul Reid said “I am pleased to announce this funding scheme, which assists artists to develop their professional careers. The Council awarded 29 artists through this scheme last year and continues to nurture artistic excellence in Fingal.” The funding is for projects/initiatives which will take place between 1 June - 31 December 2017. Phoenix Baton Twirlers took home a large number of awards from the Baton Twirling Association of Ireland National competitions in the National Basketball Arena, Tallaght, last month. It was their strongest show of force at a National Championship and was particularly impressive as it was the first national competition for most of the athletes. Rehearsals are on for Balbriggan Dramatic Society Balbriggan Dramatic Society, who have been performing plays for over 50 years, are now in rehearsal for their next production “The things I should have said today”a comedy by Pete Barrett. The story of the play is that Betty is having a bad day. She’s overheating, her mother is demented, her son is coming out, her daughter is getting divorced, the farm is losing money and her husband is hiding away from it all under the tractor. Or is he just dead? The play is being produced by Mick Cassin and the cast includes Greg Casey, Katrina Mooney, Brian Howard, Grainne Maguire and Yvonne Healy with backstage Kevin Lenihan and Glenda Hayden. ”The things I should have said today” will be performed in the Bracken Court Hotel, Balbriggan, from Wednesday, March 8, to Saturday, March 11, inclusive at 8.p.m. The first night will benefit St Georges Church Restoration Fund. Heat a large pan with a tbs of extra virgin olive oil place the prawns in it cook for one minute and turn them add shallots garlic and chilli cook for one minute more add the wine bring it to boiling point and finish with the butter and parsley. For the garnish 1 large roasted red pepper sliced 200g baby rocket 2 tbs of chopped walnuts Mix all the ingredients and dress them with 3 tsp of extra virgin olive oil and 1 tsp of balsamic vinegar a pinch of salt and enjoy.

Poker Night Guides the Way! On the last Friday in January once again Maureen Andrews of Bellewstown ran her annual poker classic for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind Balbriggan Branch in Whites of Stamullen. She was assisted by Gabriel Howard and his wife Kay, Paula Reid and Ollie Hanratty kept the show on the road while Gabriel organized the players and Maureen played the game. Maureen would like to thank all who gave her donations on the night with a special thanks to Brendan Battersby, the owner of the pub for the beautiful food he put up and all Maureen Andrews of her friends that once again produced all the prizes for the raffle. €1,000 was made on the night. Two guide dog owners came to the event from Balbriggan Tom O’neill with Gatsby his guide dog and new comer to Balbriggan Andrew Green with Nico his guide dog. The lads thanked everybody for their great work and told them what a guide dog means to a blind person or a child with Autism. All of the money made goes directly to headquarters of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind Cork to train more guide dogs for blind people and more Assistance dogs for families who have a child with Autism.

On Friday night 20th January Phyllis Mangan and Ann Begg ran the billy McGrath memorial poker night in Oldtown House Oldtown Co Dublin for guide dogs. Most successful and the ladies were very proud to hand over €1.500 to the branch for their efforts Damien O’Shaughnessy and Ann McFadden ran the Balbriggan Feis for guide dogs over the 11th and 12th February and the event was hugely supported by dancers from all over Leinster and further afield. This works out at Roads (e2,087,000); Traffic (e250,000); Open Spaces (e133,000) and Public Lighting (e33,000). Major works include Coolquay/Fieldstown (e365,000) and Rush Road, Skerries (Thomastown), e300,00. “This is a very fair division of resources across the whole of the Swords and Balbriggan Operational area,” says Cllr. Butler, “and I look forward to seeing the various projects completed over the course of this year.”

Head Tutor Peter O’Neill has been Teaching English to Students of Other Languages since 2002, after completing an initial Teacher Training Course at the English Language Centre, in Dublin. He went on to graduate in philosophy 2007, before completing a Masters in Comparative Literature in 2013, both at DCU. He has recently just returned to teaching after taking a career break to pursue his writing, he is the author of six collections of poetry and has edited an anthology of contemporary Irish poetry. Pride of Place Competition Fingal County Council is looking for communities and projects in the county interested in taking part in the 2017 IPB Pride of Place Competition. Pride of Place is an All-Ireland competition which showcases the best in community achievement. It is organised by Co-operation Ireland and is open to every local Authority north and south to nominate groups to represent their county. In 2016 Fingal was represented by the Mulhuddart Motocross Project, Skerries Age Friendly town and the communities of Donabate & Portrane. At the finals, held in Belfast in November, the Mulhuddart Motocross Club was given a special award in recognition of the community endeavour involved. In addition the community of Donabate/ Portrane was runner-up in the Population category for areas with over 5,000 people. The 2017 Competition will again have population categories for communities ranging in size from 300 up to larger areas of over 5,000 persons. In addition, specialist

categories covering, youth-centred projects, cultural projects and urban neighbourhoods and housing estates will feature. Local authorities can enter up to five categories each year. Fingal County Council has been involved in Pride of Place for over ten years and in that time over 30 communities and projects have done Fingal proud by taking part in the Competition. There have been nine outright winners, runners-up and special category prizes over those years. Among the communities to have picked up awards in Pride of Place since 2004 are Skerries, Malahide, Ballyboughal, Donabate, Parslickstown House, Draiocht Arts Centre and Mulhuddart. Communities and projects interested in representing Fingal County Council in the 2017 IPB Pride of Place Competition should email the community office at community@fingal. ie and state in no more than 300 words why you feel you are a good candidate for the 2017 Pride of Place competition. Emails should be sent before close of business on Friday March 24th.
