Talented local students win art awards

Local students enjoyed big success at this yearâ€™s 62nd Texaco Childrenâ€™s Art Competition. There were nine Fingal students among the 40 Dublin winners and they were presented with their awards at a ceremony in Dublin last month. The winners included Wiktoria Anna Witkowska (16), a pupil at Loreto Secondary School, Balbriggan, who won second prize in the 16-18 years age category of the competition. Renowned batik artist and former competition

winner, Bernadette Madden and James Twohig, Director Ireland Operations of Valero, presented her with her prize. Callum Barry (10), from The Art Academy, Rush, was also among the winners, taking home a Special Merit Award. The prestigious competition has been running for over six decades and continues to attract fantastic entries from all over the country. Its aim is to encourage and support children through art.

Fundraisers for Guide Dogs a big success

The Balbriggan/North County Dublin branch of Irish Guide Dogs held two local fundraising events recently to raise funds for the organisation’s head office in Cork. The aim of the fundraisers was to raise money to train more guide dogs for blind people and more assistance dogs for families who have a child with autism. The first event was a nice family walk which started and finished behind Supervalu, Balbriggan and lasted for approximately 45 minutes. Marshals were on every corner for safety and the group were led off by Tommie Nugent of the local band ‘Austerity’, who played ‘Who let the dogs out?’ and ‘Doggie in the Window’. The sunworshippers on the beach did not know what hit them when all the dogs came along, led off by songs of a doggie note. On June 5 the branch had a merchandise stall in the Quay Street car park as part of this year’s Balbriggan Summerfest. Matt Smith of Ford Airside, Swords, brought along a Ford Focus and many raffle tickets were sold in aid of Guide Gogs, for the car. The car will be on show up and down the country throughout the year at different festivals and the draw will take place in early December. The Balbriggan/North County Dublin branch of Guide Dogs would like to thank all those who supported them at both events, and also Supervalu Balbriggan’s Gerry Buckley, Around a Pound, Balbriggan, Doggie Doos, the Square Balbriggan, Cokabeans nom noms, Balbriggan and Irish Rosettes of Cloghran, Swords. Joe the ‘doggie man’ attended and gave prizes to several of the dogs for their hard work on the day. Tom O’Neill, co-chair of the branch and a Guide Dog owner, thanked everyone for their support including the team behind Balbriggan Summerfest who were “magnificent supporters to us for both events”. 6 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-JULY

Gatsby takes the lead in guide dog film By Brian Baneham Tom and Breege O’Neill are a well-known and a much respected couple in the Balbriggan area. They are both very active members of the community and have raised thousands for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. Down the years I have observed with admiration Tom and Breege and their respective guide dogs, Gatsby and Eunice, as they navigate the streets in our town to go shopping, visit friends or to use public transport. What makes this unique partnership between a vision impaired person and these wonderful dogs work and how much does having a guide mean to a blind person? These were questions I attempted to explore in a short documentary. I’m a film student at Colaiste Dhulaigh, Coolock and as a project for our graduate year we were assigned to produce a three-minute documentary. I felt it was a great opportunity to highlight the synergy and relationship of a guide dog and its owner in a short film. I was delighted Tom agreed to participate on the project and we began our research in late January. We decided to focus our film on the relationship Tom has with his guide dog Gatsby and how the pair have bonded to create this unique partnership that has given him freedom, mobility and independence. Two of my colleagues, Luke E Ryan and Thomas Andrews, helped me with the filming which we shot in one day in Balbriggan. We attempted to get a sense of the communication between a dog and owner and feature some of the potential dangers they have to negotiate daily. Both Tom and Gatsby were a joy to work with and it was an absolute pleasure to witness the warmth and camaraderie they have developed together. The shoot was very successful and I

believe we captured some very special moments between the two; not only as a working unit but as a man with his family pet too. On May 24, ‘Gatsby’ - our short documentary - was screened in the IFI Cinema in Dublin. The reaction was amazing and we were delighted with the positive feedback. It was a pleasure to have attended the event with our two stars Tom and Gatsby who have become celebrities with the staff and students of the college. I think the film reached our objectives – to inform and engage an audience and to give a sense of the importance guide dogs are in the lives of people without sight. It is a thoroughly fascinating topic to have captured on film and has been a worthwhile and memorable experience.

New members welcome at Balbriggan Men’s Shed Balbriggan Men’s Shed has made huge strides since it opened in 2015 and is continuing to provide an excellent service in the community. Those involved in the group were able to highlight the quality of their work at an open day held on June 21 that was well received locally. Located in the former coach house behind St Peter and Paul’s Church in the town, the shed provides a space where men of all ages can gather to engage in interesting projects. The recent completion of a Buddy Bench for St Teresa’s Primary School demonstrates how the Balbriggan Men’s Shed can support community activities while at the same time providing an interesting outlet for its members’ commitment

and energy. The shed is open to all men in the community - no skills are required. All activities are carried out in a laid back environment where men can meet, enjoy each other’s company and chat in a relaxed manner. The most used tool in the shed is the kettle! Balbriggan Men’s Shed is a non-commercial organisation operating under the umbrella of the

Irish Men’s Shed Association. The Men’s Shed movement originated in Australia in the 1990s and currently there are approximately 280 of them in Ireland. Local company celebrates enterprise award A Skerries-based company was celebrating recently after winning a prize at the National Enterprise Awards final. InvizBox Ltd, which was only established last year, won the Innovation Award at the finals held in Dublin. InvizBox, headed up by Paul Canavan, specialises in secure digital services and have developed innovative ‘plug and play’ devices which allow you to secure your privacy on the internet by simply connecting any of your personal devices to the InvizBox over WiFi. They remove the complexity of trying to secure yourself and your data. Thousands of small businesses from across the country were supported by Local Enterprise Offices in the Local Authorities Network last year and 32 of those businesses, including InvizBox Ltd, reached the National Final. The company was the Local Enterprise Office Fingal’s nominee for the final. School is out for summer and parents all over the country are panicking. How are we going to entertain the children for nine whole weeks? How are we going to stay sane and not go bankrupt. Don’t worry, there are lots of free and low cost things you can do to keep them happy. An activity we love is seashell painting. Next time you’re at the beach, bring a few empty plastic or paper cups and give the children the task of collecting seashells. Tell them only to collect full, non broken ones. This takes longer and the look of concentration on their faces will be adorable. Once home, set them up with aprons and a basin of water in the garden, where they can wash their shells.

Then for the fun bit, get them to put newspaper sheets down and start painting. You can use child friendly paints you have at home or pick some up cheaply in your local toy store or shop. Let them be adventurous and creative by painting spots or stripes on the shells. You’ll be amazed how engrossed they get and how much peace and quiet you’ll have while they’re busy. Finally, get a large glass tumbler. You can get one in Tesco or Dunnes for around €2 and fill it up with their colourful shells once they are dry. This will look good as a decoration around the house or will make a nice gift to grandparents. with Blueberry Smoothie!

Sift Flower, ground porridge oats, salt into large bowl. Add sugar and stir. In separate bowel mix egg yolks (keeping egg whites for whisking) milk, vanilla essence, lemon juice, lemon zest and melted butter. Combine wet and dry ingredients to form batter. In a clean jug / bowel whisk egg whites until soft peaks form. Fold this through the pancake mix being carful not to over mix. Heat large pan, fry and enjoy!!
