Balbriggan Guide Dogs branch leads the way

The Balbriggan/North County Dublin branch of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind is celebrating its 31st year in existence this year. The branch has had many highlights and the first one has to be the arrival to Balbriggan of the first guide dog ever, ‘Frank’, a black Labrador. He worked with Balbriggan man Tom O’Neill, his owner, until he retired in the early ‘90s. On his retirement the then Town Commissioners gave Frank ‘The freedom of the lampposts of Balbriggan’. Tom had a further four guide dogs to follow, Bruce, Kola, Sarge and his current working guide Gatsby. Tom’s wife Breege got her first guide dog Gypsie in 1991 and Breege’s employer gave Gypsie a silver drinking bowl on retirement. Breege has since had Abby and her current guide dog is Unice. Some of the other highlights through the years include 2007 when the branch raised €127,000 and the following year again broke €100,000 with their fundraising. Bringing groups to visit the National HQ in Cork on two separate occasions have been major weekends for the branch.

The first visit was by train and on arrival at the centre they were told by CEO Padraig Mallen that this was the biggest single group ever to visit the centre with a full coach of 54. The centre organised the coach from Kent Station Cork to Ballincollig where the centre is located. The second trip was with a smaller coach load from Balbriggan and on the road home a pellet gun was fired at the coach and broke the driver’s window. Was this a highlight? Well if not it was certainly a moment to remember. The school talks that the branch continues to do are now showing the awareness of guide dogs throughout the North County because back in those early days those children that attended the school talks have now grown into the adults who support the branch financially and by volunteering for its current fundraising events. Long before there was Facebook or texting there was Máire and Ned Maguire from just outside Balbriggan. This couple year after year went to pretty much every house in the area seeking sponsorship for the annual dog walk.

Each year people saw Máire and Ned arriving at the door to collect the sponsorship money which was ready. This couple were truly exceptional volunteers and spread the word throughout the North County. In recent years the branch have recreated the annual dog walk and it now runs as part of the Balbriggan Summer Festival.

This worked really well as everybody supported each other, a real community venture. The new starting point of Supervalu car park worked well. The branch would like to say thank you to Supervalu for their amazing support since coming to the town. In the early days and right up to today, the Balbriggan Scouts have been friends to the

branch and have remained supporters. People like Eddie Darcy, the late Michael Rooney, Angela Morgan and Donal Warded did amazing work for the branch including making a Papier Machier guide dog that Breen Goff put on wheels. That Papier Mashier dog was towards the front of St Patrick Day’s parades and festival parades. It also created awareness of the branch. Currently in Balbriggan there is a total of five people with guide dogs plus a number of families who have a child with autism and have been given an Assistance Dog from Guide Dogs, Cork. There are also several puppy walkers in Balbriggan all of whom are volunteers and supporters. The strength of the branch is the friendships within it. Each person who becomes involved says they feel they have become part of a family and love the volunteering work they do. Everyone in the branch is a volunteer and all money they raise goes to HQ Guide Dogs, Cork (www.guidedogs.ie) to be spent training more guide and assistance dogs. On Sunday, June 5 the branch will be in Quay Street car park, Balbriggan with a merchandise stall and a Ford car which they are raffling. This is part of the Summer Festival. Then it will be collections on public footpaths outside venues like churches in July and mid-September.

Balbriggan Historical Society’s events are a major success

Balbriggan & District Historical Society held its Commemorative Seminar Éirí amach na Cásca Is Cuimhin Linn on May 7. President of the society Tony McNamara welcomed everyone to the event which was then launched by Mayor of Fingal Cllr David O’Connor, a long-term supporter of the society. Bernie Kelly, PRO for Balbriggan & District Historical Society, said: “We then enjoyed five brilliant talks both on the local and national experience in 1916. “Bairbre Curtis spoke about the 1916 Rising in Fingal, the Fingal Brigade and the employment and military situation in Balbriggan at the time which would have discouraged people from getting involved, at least publicly. “Liz D’Arcy took us through the painstaking skilled process in conserving an original copy of the Proclamation. “The results of her work on the Proclamation donated by the family 6 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-JUNE

of Elizabeth O’Farrell to Dublin City Archives is on display in City Hall at present. “Jimmy Wren, author of The GPO Garrison Easter Week 1916, told the story of many of these men in his talk, including Mayo-born Charles McMahon who served in the GPO aged 11, was shot in the head in 1921 during the War of Independence, then went on to win an All Ireland Hurling Medal with Dublin in 1938. “The afternoon began with excellent speaker Sean Collins on the topic of the Easter Rising in Louth and Meath, and the Francis Ledwidge poem about it which he wrote while serving with the British Army in WW1. “As with everywhere else difficulties in communication and confusion over countermanding orders played a huge part in the story. “The last talk was Sinéad Ní Fhlannagáin (BeanDeValera), daughter of Balbriggan and 1916 by

Micheál MacMathúna. “Micheál has done comprehensive research on her life, her devotion to the Irish Language, and her writings but in this talk he concentrated on what her life was like in the 1916 period, when her husband was fighting or in jail or in America, which he was for much of the time. “Three of her children were sent to live with their aunt in Balbriggan for a year from 1916 to 1917. “A brilliant day concluded with the reading of the Proclamation from local students Ruth Guildea and Daniel O’Driscoll.” A busy weekend continued with a 1916 Commemorative Mass, Procession and unveiling of the Plaque to Sinéad Ní Fhlannagáin deValera in Quay Street on Sunday. Historical Society committee members Jim Walsh, Anne Collins, Bernie Kelly and May McKeon were delighted to be part of the Balbriggan Liaison Commemorative Committee along with Cllr Malachy

Quinn and Cllr Gráinne Maguire, involved with planning this and other events during the week. Ms Kelly thanked Micheál MacMathúna for his assistance with the wording of the plaque and Patrick Hickey for its design. May performed the duty of MC on the day, Gráinne Maguire read the Proclamation, and speakers included Mayor of Fingal Cllr David O’Connor, Mícheál MacMahúna, and Éamon Ó Cuív TD, grandson of Sinéad. The plaque was unveiled by Nora Ní Chuív, granddaughter. “It was a great day thanks to Fr Eugene, St Patrick’s Brass and Reed Band, Fingal Old IRA, local Scouts and girl guides and brigíns and most importantly the people of Balbriggan,” added Ms Kelly. “It was great to see so many of the DeValera and Flanagan family members there who were delighted to share with us their personal memories of Balbriggan.”

Bremore Castle garden set to Bloom

Bord Bia’s Bloom, Ireland’s largest gardening, food and family festival will take place in the Phoenix Park from Thursday to Monday, June 2-6. And this year’s festival will feature a reconstructed Medieval Garden from Bremore Castle, Balbriggan. The Medieval Garden is a collaboration project initiated by Fingal County Council in conjunction with the lecturers and students of the Institute of Technology, Blanchardstown (ITB). The medieval theme takes inspiration from the history of Bremore Castle, the area’s association with St Mologa, a seventh century Irish saint long renowned for beekeeping, and highlights the skills (in particular aspects of wood carving and stone building) which are the focus of the Local Training Initiative based here. The design includes the use of recycled stone from the Bremore Castle site, local willow from

Skerries for edges of raised beds, and Irish handmade straw bee hives (skeps). Having won a Silver Gilt medal and the Best in Show Award at last year’s Bloom, Fingal County Council is moving up in size by entering the Medium Gardens category this year. After Bloom, the Medieval Garden will be reassembled in Bremore Castle. Garden designer, Jane McCorkell, lecturer in horticulture at ITB and a seven times Gold medal winner at Bloom, has worked with her students on the design of the Medieval Garden for Bloom 2016, while the show garden plants have been cultivated in the college’s urban horticulture facility. Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid wished the Medieval Garden project well at the festival. “This is a fantastic example of the great work that has been ongoing in Bremore Castle for the last number of years and I’m delighted we can

showcase these skills to Bloom visitors,” he said. “I am also pleased that the partnership that we have enjoyed with IT Blanchardstown is continuing on this joint initiative.” Mayor of Fingal, Cllr David O’Connor said: “I’m really looking forward to seeing the Bremore Medieval Garden at Bloom. “Huge credit is due to the staff of Fingal County Council and IT Blanchardstown on this collaborative project which will put Bremore on the map.” Now a key feature of the June Bank Holiday Weekend, Bloom attracted more than 100,000 people last year. Bord Bia’s annual showcase of the best of Ireland’s horticulture and food industry will once again feature a range of impressive show gardens, food features and family entertainment.

You are not alone with Nurture

ecently I found myself in a meeting with a fascinating lady, Irene Lowry. As a life coach, I have an inquisitive nature and I wanted to know what Irene’s local charity, Nurture, was all about. I knew it was something to do with childbirth and post-natal aftercare, but having never taken on a maternal role myself, I wasn’t at all familiar with this support network within the community. On entering the Nurture office on Thomas Hand Street, “that purple place that used to be the carpet shop” as it’s affectionately known, you immediately enter a little oasis of calm. Essential oil burners exude an aroma of peace and harmony, almost like when you walk into a massage therapy room, candles gently flickering, I felt I was in for a treat. Over a cup of coffee I chatted with Irene and asked outright, what is this place all about? Irene is chief executive of Nurture, an Irish registered charity she set up in 2011. In July 2015, Irene set up the Nurture head office on Thomas Hand Street, Skerries, as she wanted to set up her head office in a local, tight-knit community. Nurture offers counselling nationwide for maternal mental health which includes 10 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-JUNE

issues surrounding conception, pregnancy and childbirth. Mental health in general is a term that is becoming more and more acceptable in our society, which is no bad thing. “We offer supports in areas such as post and pre-natal depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, miscarriage, loss of a baby, stillbirth, failed IVF and much more,” says Irene. “Those who turn to Nurture in need of help will secure a counselling appointment under two weeks of contacting the charity. We operate a ‘No Wait List’ policy, so our supports are immediate and affordable to women, partners and family members, as issues relating to maternal mental health affect all the family. “Our area of maternal mental health in Ireland is massively stigmatised and somewhat taboo. People need to know it really is okay to talk about it. Nurture’s message is ‘You Are Not Alone’.” I ask more about the ‘No Wait List’ policy; it seems to me that is where a lot of the problems exacebate, when those suffering are made wait on a list for months. “We offer critical intervention supports within 24/48 hours for women who are feeling suicidal or simply not coping,” says Irene. “This avoids a woman having to attend Accident and Emergency departments. Nurture also runs facilitated eight-week support groups for women and their babies who may be experiencing

post-natal depression or traumatic birth. There are also grief support groups for mothers who have suffered miscarriage or lost a baby.” How do people make contact with Nurture? “We work alongside GPs, health professionals, maternity hospitals, holistic therapy centres, local HSE primary care teams, adult mental health services, public health nurses and child services,” says Irene. “We advise any woman who feels she is struggling to contact her GP or Public Health Nurse and Nurture on 01-8430930. Nurture’s counselling fee is €40 per session but for those who cannot afford this it will be subsidised by the charity so this can be reduced.” To subsidise these supports, fundraising is vital. On May 3, Irene brought Nurture outdoors and turned Red Island purple with a photoshoot in the playground on Red Island, Skerries, featuring local volunteers, mothers and babies all sporting their Nurture t-shirts. Following the photoshoot, everyone warmed up at the Nurture coffee morning in Ollies Place, New Street, Skerries, cakes, bakes and delights aplenty! Teaching your dog to walk in street traffic

In such places we can call commands such as “break – run” (or similar). Dogs also use such places for toileting and to mark their terrain. It is an important signal to other dogs. Initially our chosen location should be close to home and the time for play no longer than five minutes. It is recommended to play with a small ball. Exiting from the home should be calm and quiet, with the dog walking on our left side and his chest positioned roughly in line with our leg.The lead need not be tight. We can use the command “heel”. We should avoid walking close to walls, corners, posts and trees. These places are marked by other dogs and distract our dog. They are “a treasure trove of information” for all the local canines. Which female is in heat – who is the “top dog” in the area – what is the news generally in the local dog world. In such situations our position as leader diminishes and our ability to steer and command the distracted dog is at its minimum. These walks don’t need to be long. But they should be well thought out and active. It is important to change the pace of the walk or run. We should use three types of march: funeral, natural and military. The same with running. We can do it with any dog of any age within one month. Of course we have to fulfill some conditions. The most important condition is not systematic but SATISFACTION. People usually have this feeling if their dogs are well turned-out, obedient or more agile compared to other dogs. The first incentive is the most common but not permanent, but the second one is more durable, stable and long-lasting. Dogs are very empathic animals and the thing they most desire is our SATISFACTION. When they sense this, they work better. Now, lets start. If our dog likes our company it is enough to use the motto of Happy Paw Training: “Everything we do with our dog becomes a habit, and after years each habit becomes a pure happiness.: Before the walk with our dog we need to plan a route. It is important to incorporate places where the dog can easily and safely run and sniff – to go into “its world”.

200g plain flour Pinch of salt 4 eggs 600ml milk 2 Tbsp sunflower oil 4 Tbsp sugar 1 Tsp vanilla essence 4 Tbsp lemon juice (optional)

Method

Whisk together all wet ingredients then sieve in the flour and whisk in to remove lumps. Then ad sugar and mix. Heat a small amount of sunflower oil or butter in a non stick pan and ad a ladle full at a time and swirl to make sure mixture covers pan in a thin layer. Cook each one on a medium heat for about 40sec-1minute until set. When set flip over. Cook for about a further 30-40sec. Let cool slightly then fill with your favourite filling.
