Countdown is on for Balbriggan Summerfest

The countdown is on for Balbriggan Summerfest 2016 which will take place in the town over the June Bank Holiday weekend. Once again there will be all your usual favourites with some new events planned including a Vintage Fair, Balbriggan’s Got Talent, the Great Bake Off, Summerfest 5k Road Race, Pet Show, Sandcastle competition, Blessing of the Boats, Senior Citizens’ Tea Party and Bingo, Live

Music, Fireworks, Carnival and Family Fun Day. While there are a lot of activities planned, the organisers want to ensure they are catering for everyone as much as possible. Local News Balbriggan locals invited to enter Cleaner Communities Awards

Residents, businesses and community groups in Balbriggan have been invited to take part in this year’s Fingal County Council Cleaner Communities Awards. The awards were established with the aim of recognising the efforts that local people go to in order to keep their areas clean. The council recently launched the awards which have seen participation grow year on year. Projects can range from large to small scale, under several categories, both business and residential, and are open to new applicants each year. Local charity reaching out to help homeless Edel and Bryan Campbell set up a charity called North County Outreach in October 2015. They had become increasingly aware of the local families in need and the rising homelessness crisis since Christmas the year before. After helping four local families through Christmas 2014 it became apparent that people were falling on hard times with the threat of losing their home a very real threat. Edel was helping out with some homeless charities at the time but she realised that there needed to be more done to make a real difference. Other charities were running out of hot food before everyone in the queues could be fed due to such high numbers needing their help. Being homeless herself at the age of eight was Edelâ€™s inspiration to forming North County Outreach. When her dad lost his job it led to the loss of their home as a result. Edel was moved by the fact that her dad always helped others even when they were going through hard times themselves. She never forgot that or the help her family received from others when they badly needed it. A car full of food and volunteers travels to Dublin City every Wednesday and Saturday night with pots of hot food, sandwiches, clothes and anything else that the local community have been generous enough to donate. On these days there is a steady stream of people coming and going from Edel and Bryanâ€™s house delivering what they can - shoes, hats, gloves, warm coats, sleeping bags are in constant need from the people who live and sleep on the streets of Dublin. Lots of these families queue up for North County Outreach soup runs just so that they can have a hot meal to sustain them and their children. This is not something that they do lightly or for a freebie meal. Mostly shame and embarrassment can be seen on their faces but they have no other choice. Little kids getting excited for a curry or a stew on a cold wet night is a sad sight in your own city. No wonder we are all getting increasingly angry at our Governmentâ€™s lack of insight and intervention for these families. Houses sit empty for years while people procrastinate on what to do with these properties. All these homeless families want is a place to call their own that they can close the door on the outside world and feel safe and secure. With a permanent address jobs can be sought after bringing their family out of this nightmare they have been living in for far too long. Mental health issues are common for people who are trying to keep their family together at all cost. This only gets worse with time as their struggle can go on for years. Cramped, damp and dingy accommodation would test the patience of any family. Nowhere to do homework or escape to another room for some peace and quiet can lead to arguments and stress among a family who had been happy and content before this tragedy overtook their lives. Fortunately there are people like Edel and Bryan who unselfishly devote their time to helping the people who need them. When they are not feeding people in Dublin they are wading through the bags of clothes that are donated nearly every day. Even after a health scare recently Edel can be seen still smiling and working tirelessly for those in need. There are no judgements made by Bryan and Edel or their many volunteers on any of these people who have fallen on hard times. Empathy and a big heart is all that is required to do good in this world. On a roll! Fingal Film Festival now open for submissions The Fingal Film Festival is now open for submissions in Animation – Feature – Short – Student - Documentary – Scannan Gaeilge Is Fearr – International - 1916 films related. The fifth instalment of Fingal Film Festival’s annual event will take place in Movies@swords, Pavilions Centre, Swords, from September 30 to October 2. “The 2015 event saw bigger screening and workshop attendances, proving that the festival is the best independent festival to have your work seen by large audiences and is a fantastic platform for emerging filmmakers from Ireland and abroad,” says Liz Kenny, the festival’s managing director. Creative director Dave Byrne says: “Our focus for 2016 is to create a festival that is diverse in content, offering an interactive experience with filmmakers and cinema goers alike during this year’s event, a challenge I and the team are looking forward to.” As part of the centenary celebrations in 2016, the festival will be dedicating a slot in the schedule for all subjects relating to the 1916 Rising. Any filmmakers creating content in any of the mediums screened at the festival are encouraged to submit for possible inclusion in the Fingal Film Festival 2016. The awards are in nine categories as follows for

Skerries tunes up for music weekend

Beoga will be among those performing in Skerries. THE 15th Skerries Traditional Music Weekend will take place from May 13-15 in the picturesque seaside town, one of the jewels in Fingal’s crown. Skerries will play host to a weekend packed with music, song and dance where leading artists will travel to Skerries and join with locals and visitors in a celebration of our unique Irish heritage. A great selection of top class individual players will be participating throughout the weekend on many levels including formal concerts, tutoring and pub sessions. Artists such as Mary Bergin, Con ‘Fada’ Ó Drisceoil, Mick Conneely, Gráinne Hambly, Mick O’Brien, Martin Quinn, Mairéad Casey, Marcus Maloney, to mention but a few will be performing.

On Friday May 13, local musician James O’Mahony will lead the way to some of the local schools accompanied by a team of musicians to perform and interact with the students. Skerries Traditional Music Weekend is proud to be involved in this Outreach Programme which, over the years, has nurtured a keen interest in traditional music among the younger members of the local community. Beoga will perform on May 13 at 8pm in the Little Theatre venue. Early booking is advised. Tickets are available now by contacting a member of the committee on 087-6528643. There are great choices for the playing punter this year as the number of sessions has been extended. Some of Ireland’s top exponents of traditional music will showcase their talents in a more

informal and natural setting. Players are welcome to join in the many sessions during the weekend which will also include a Slow Session for adults and a Junior Session aimed at providing an opportunity for young musicians to play together and sample the session atmosphere. Loreto student wins poetry competition The winners of Fingal County Council’s competition were announced at an awards ceremony held in the Council Chamber, County Hall, Swords. In attendance were the Deputy Mayor of Fingal, Councillor Eoghan O’Brien, judges Maighread Medbh and Christodoulos Makris, Senior Executive Librarian Yvonne O’Brien, Librarian Alan Dunne and the winning students, along with family members, friends and school representatives. The other county finalists celebrated at the awards ceremony were:

Alisa Oriol, a second year at Loreto Secondary School, Balbriggan, won Fingal County Council’s ‘A Poem for Ireland’ competition. Alisa will now have her poem submitted to a national panel of judges, set up by Libraries Development, Local Government Management Agency (LGMA). The judges will then shortlist eight national finalists who will take part in the National Final. President Higgins will present a prize of €1,000 to the overall winner, the National Runner-Up will be awarded €500, the National 3rd prize will be awarded €250 and all National Finalists will receive €50 vouchers.

Easy Banana & Blueberry Bread Ingredients • • • • • • • • • •

285g/10oz plain flour 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda ½ tsp salt 110g/4oz butter, plus extra for greasing 225g/8oz caster sugar 2 free-range eggs 4 ripe bananas, mashed ½ cup of blueberries 85ml/3fl oz buttermilk (or normal milk mixed with 1½ tsp lemon juice or vinegar) 1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. 2. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a large mixing bowl. 3. In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. 4. Add the eggs, mashed bananas, blueberries, buttermilk and vanilla extract to the butter and sugar mixture and mix well. Fold in the flour mixture. 5. Grease a 20cm x 12.5cm/8in x 5in loaf tin and pour the cake mixture into the tin. 6. Transfer to the oven and bake for about an hour, or until well-risen and golden-brown. 7. Remove from the oven and cool in the tin for a few minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely before serving. TIP: Great for lunch snacks. Slice up once cooled and freeze in portions. Obesity in our pets Is my pet over weight?

If you are unsure that your pet is overweight then he/she probably isn’t. The best way to check is to simply look. All dogs and cats should have some shape to their bodies with a thinner waste than torso. Run your hands down along their chest. You should be able to easily feel their ribs without having to put too much pressure on. If you are finding it difficult to feel their ribs then they may be overweight. To find out how overweight they are, you then move to their waist. Can you see a visible wasteline? If not, then yes our pet is overweight.

Main causes of obesity

The main reason is over consumption of food. This maybe extra treats, table scraps or just too much of their normal dinner. Like humans, all animals have their recommended daily amount of food they should be fed. This can be found on any bag of food depending on the weight of the animal. But this is a full day’s amount of food so it doesn’t include the extra treats. To add the daily treat that you give, make sure to take away from their daily dinner. For example, Fido’s recommended intake for the day is 200 grams. He gets two dental sticks a day, so when it comes to measuring out his dinner

he should only get 160 grams, working out that each dental stick is roughly 20 grams. This of course is a rough calculation and you should check your treat packs for the proper measurements. Also, feed for the weight your dog should be, not when he is if he is overweight. Table scraps work the same way, but they are not as easy to work out and also most human food is higher in salt than dog food and should always be avoided. Just stick with the dog food. Neutering: When someone says “neutering causes obesity’’, they are not entirely wrong. But the reason it causes increase in weight is because your pet has had an operation to remove a body organ, so now he/she has one less organ that needs energy. After you get your pet neutered take one teaspoon of nuts away from their dinner. This will prevent her/him gaining weight. Health risks following obesity: These are not only caused by obesity but it is a contributing factor. •Arthritis •Reduced life span •Heart disease •Respiratory difficulties •Liver and kidney disease

New Mercedes-Benz E-Class arrives on the market designed for long journeys, heated armrests in the doors and centre console and a choice of 64 interior LED lighting colours. Optionally available are two high-resolution 12.3inch display screens (a first in the segment) and three different wide-screen instrument cluster styles. A wide choice of materials and colour combinations gives owners scope to ‘individualise’ the interior. It is the first car ever to feature touch-sensitive finger swipe buttons on the steering wheel which the driver can use to control the infotainment system while keeping both hands on the steering wheel. Mobile phones with the inductive charge facility can be charged and connected with no need for cables or a telephone holder. Model & Price In Ireland, focus is being placed on the E220d Avantgarde Automatic at €52,850 ex works – which represents a price decrease of €850 compared to the previous model. Also available to order will be Exclusive (€55,210) and AMG versions (€57,650). Available also is an E350d version at €66,900. Further model variants to follow in time will include an E350e hybrid and a powerful V6 E350d. Engine Aerodynamically, it has a drag coefficient of 0.23. Under the bonnet, a completely new engine on which Mercedes-Benz spent some €2.6 billion in development costs delivers a 17% weight reduction, lower fuel consumption (3.9 litres/100Km combined), lower C02 (102g/km), increased horsepower (194 HP), 400Nm of torque and lower road tax (€190). Driver Assistance Systems Amongst its standard fitments is Active Brake Assist, providing support during emergency braking, Attention Assist with adjustable sensitivity to alert the driver to inattentiveness or drowsiness and Crosswind Assist, which mitigates the effects of strong crosswinds. An optional Driver Assistance package offers a further suite of safety features that Mercedes-Benz claims makes the E-Class the most intelligent saloon in its class, one being a system that moves the driver or front passenger away from the danger zones when an imminent lateral collision is detected. Another safety innovation is a sound warning that triggers reflexes and prepares occupants if the risk of a collision is detected. Commenting, Ciaran Allen, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars in Ireland, said that buoyed by an unprecedented level of interest and a bank of pre-launch orders far into treble-digit territory, the new E-Class will play an important role in underpinning the position of Mercedes-Benz as flag-carrier in the luxury segment. “Exceptional in every respect, it will redefine standards in the businessclass, not least in its outstanding specifications and highly competitive priceto-value proposition,” he said.
