Balbrigan Chamber of Commerce honours Young Scientists

Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce recently held an evening of celebration to honour the achievements of seven exceptional students from Loreto Secondary School, Balbriggan at the Bracken Court Hotel. Six of the students won prizes, including the top award, at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2016, while one of the students won the Intel award for Sentinus Young Innovators 2015. In addition to their students’ achievements, Loreto Secondary School received the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD) Award for Best Republic of Ireland School. Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce chief

executive Seán Corrigan welcomed the students, their families and teachers to the event. Maria Louise, Diana, Renuka, Maria, Khadija, Emily and Lauren were still full of fresh memories from their meeting with President Michael D Higgins at the ‘Women in Science’ reception held at Aras an Uachtarain. They were beaming with pride and energy when they gave presentations of their research projects to a captivated audience. The audience included Mari Cahalane, Head of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition and Dr Tony Scott, co-founder of the exhibition. Dr Tony Scott and Rev Dr Burke, two UCD Physics researchers, visited science fairs in the US during the early 1960s and adapted the idea for

Ireland. Subsequently, the first Young Scientist Exhibition took place in Dublin in 1965. Dr Scott praised the Loreto winners. “They are all lovely young people with bright futures ahead of them,” he said. The overall prize winners, Maria Louise Fufezan and Diana Bura, spoke about their findings of potentially detrimental effects of enzymes added to animal feed on soil fertility. They will represent Ireland at the 28th European Union Young Scientist competition in Brussels in September with their research project titled: ‘An Investigation into the Effects of Enzymes used in Animal Feed Additives on the Lifespan of Caenorhabditis Elegans’.

Local News Maria Wyzykowska presented her research into ‘The effects of High Intensity Interval Training on cognition and academic performance of female Leaving Cert students’. Khadija Gull and Emily Tierney won two awards for their research project titled: ‘Identification of alterations in members of the Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase’ (PTPs) gene family as novel therapeutic options for the treatment of Pancreatic Cancer’. Lauren Murphy won the Intel Award for Sentinus Young Innovators 2015 Overall Award. Lauren will represent Northern Ireland at the largest international pre-college Science Fair in the world held in Arizona in May 2016 with her invention of a hand held rehabilitation aid for MS sufferers. Renuka Chintapalli won no less than three awards at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition for her research: ‘Developing a predictive tool for identifying FLNc-associated biomarkers of oesophageal cancer metastasis ‘. Renuka is currently collaborating with a professor from Trinity College and is preparing to publish her findings in an international journal. Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce were delighted to have hosted such a positive and happy celebration which is a boost for the town’s future.

Nurture – a charity providing vital support to women in Fingal AN Irish charity offering support and professional counselling to women affected by maternal mental health issues as a result of conception, pregnancy and childbirth is providing vital counselling and supports at its headquarters in Skerries. Irene Lowry established Nurture from her family home in early 2011 with a friend and colleague, Lilian McGowan. Irene is a humanistic counsellor with her own counselling practice in Rush. In 2010 she counselled two young women who were battling post-natal depression. Tragically they died by suicide and left three very young children and loving families behind. According to Ms Lowry, these women were “waiting on the public health waiting lists over nine months”. “We are all too aware that nine months is just too long for any woman to have to wait for a counselling appointment,” said Ms Lowry who recently won a very prestigious award, at Social Entrepreneurs Ireland 2015. This means a significant financial investment in Nurture’s work. With the financial support of both the National Office for Suicide Prevention, the progressive Credit Union in Balbriggan and other funders, the charity moved out of Ms Lowry’s family home to a beautiful centre of excellence in Skerries.

The Skerries centre offers a walk-in support service, one-to-one counselling and support groups for women and their babies for post-natal depression, birth trauma and grief. Nurture has a ‘no wait list policy’ and all supports are both affordable and accessible to women, partners and families. Today, Nurture is a nationwide charity with 27 dedicated counsellors, all fully accredited to their respective Irish governing bodies. The charity focuses on counselling women affected by issues such as pre-natal and post-natal depression, birth trauma, miscarriage, loss of a baby and failed IVF. It is estimated that over 42,000 women in Ireland will experience some form of depression or anxiety every year, many due to a miscarriage, failed IVF or pre- or postnatal depression. Since 2011 Nurture has provided vital supports to over 1,600 women and 150 men nationwide through its network of trained counsellors. Chief executive of Nurture Ms Lowry said that despite some progress in the way mental health is perceived and treated in Ireland, there is still a huge stigma attached to the issue of maternal mental health.

“Many women feel ashamed and a sense of failure if they are unable to conceive or carry a child, or if they suffer from depression following the birth of a child,” she said. “As a result, they feel very alone and isolated and at times do not fully understand what they are experiencing. They simply do not know where to turn for support. “Our aim is to help these women and their families to get back to positive emotional well-being by providing professional, affordable and confidential supports nationwide.” Nurture is encouraging any woman who is feeling anxious or depressed to pick up the phone and contact them today. “You are not alone – help is available to get you back to positive mental health,” added Ms Lowry. As Nurture has no waiting lists, people in need of help will be seen within two weeks of contacting the charity. In severe cases, they will be seen within 24-48 hours, avoiding the need to go to the Emergency Department. Subsidised counselling is also available to those who cannot afford Nurture’s counselling fee of €35 per session. On St Patrick’s Day, the Nurture team is putting on a fun-themed march in the parade and are asking women and their families to join them on the day. Balbriggan group to attend World Youth Day

A GROUP of more than 20 young people from the Balbriggan, Skerries and Stamullen areas will be travelling to Poland this summer to take part in World Youth Day (WYD). The first World Youth Day took place in Rome in 1984. Over 300,000 people from around the world responded to an invitation from the late John Paul 11 to attend an international Jubilee of youth on Palm Sunday in St Peter’s Square. Since that inaugural event, World Youth Day has been celebrated by over 26 million young people. Fr Chris Derwin of St Peter and Paul Church, Balbriggan, is looking forward to bringing the local group to Krakow on July 25. “It’s the first time ever that youths from the parish are going to take part in World Youth Day,” said Fr Chris. “It’s also the first time that the parishes of Balbriggan and Skerries have collaborated on

something of this scale. “This is a massive event and we’re hoping it will be a big success. There could be around three million people in attendance. “It’s a festival of fun, frendship and faith. We want to give the youths of the parishes a positive experience in line with their faith so they can feel a lot closer to their church, Jesus Christ and their faith.” Fr Chris said this is a festival where the youth can enjoy themselves in a safe environment and meet other young people from all over the world. Masses, music, a pilgrimage walk, prayer vigil and teaching elements will be included in the week-long event and the youths will be given the oportunity to attend a mass given by Pope Francis. As the trip will be expensive, Fr Chris said any donations would be most welcome. As part of the fundraising drive, a Celtic Tenors concert is taking place at at St Peter and Paul Church, Balbriggan on April 7. Tickets cost €25. Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce working on exciting initiatives Balbriggan Chamber is a driven organisation with excellent working relationships with Fingal County Council and State agencies. It has a dedicated board of directors promoting and lobbying for Balbriggan and for the Chamber members’ interests. Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce has a vision for Balbriggan which aims to drive growth and prosperity for all. However, to do this, it needs the full support of local business in developing the town. Chamber membership gives local business a voice in how the community develops. Working together, and in conjunction with State bodies, the Chamber can ensure that Balbriggan will be a town full of opportunity and thriving businesses. Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce is working on some exciting initiatives in 2016 including: • Working with Retail Excellence Ireland and Fingal County Council to develop a retail strategy for the town. •Developing a marketing campaign to attract more business to Stephenstown Industrial Estate. •Developing a tourism plan for the area, including Bremore Castle. Balbriggan is turning the corner. Six new retail outlets have opened in the town centre over the past two months. Bremore Castle is moving towards completion following the very successful Kodaline concert and video; the Primary Care Centre on Dublin Street is due for completion by late summer 2016; the new Intreo Centre in Mill Street opened recently and a number of new factories are in the pipeline for Stephenstown Industrial Estate. The future is looking bright. Balbriggan is becoming a vibrant town and the onus is on all businesses to get behind this momentum and to help drive the future of the community.

Pupils from St Oliver Plunkett’s Natioal School, Balrothery took part in the Peace Proms Cross Border Choir at the RDS on February 6. The children, teachers and parents had a terrific time. They sang a variety of songs and it was a great opportunity to perform with a full orchestra. A big thank you to Mrs Callaghan and Ms Farrell for all their hard work.

Neutering Dogs and cats should be neutered at a young age. The ideal age for neutering is between six months and one year before females come into heat. Animal shelters are over populated with dogs and cats brought in because of accidental mating or poorly planned breeding. While this is the main benefit to neutering your pet, the other big result is a healthier and happier pet. Let’s say, one cat has four kittens (litters can range from 2-9, average being five). Then within six months those four kittens have four kittens of their own (20 unwanted cats within six months). Then those 16 kittens six months later had four kittens of their own again (36 unwanted cats with one year). Do you know 36 people that want to adopt a cat? So by neutering that one cat, you have helped reduce the overpopulation problem by roughly 36 cats. This is also the same for dogs. Their litter sizes vary depending on the size of the dog. Small dog’s litters range from 3-5. Larger dogs’ litters can be up to nine. These are not definite numbers. There have been cases where there have been litter sizes as big as 12, or as small as just one puppy. Health Benefits include: • Reduced risk of mammary and testicular cancer.

• Reduced risk of injury from fighting. • Helps prevent uterine infections in females • Removes the risk of trouble breeding. Some females are great mothers and the instincts kick in straight away. Others don’t understand and can make wrong moves. Makes a happier pet because: • Females don’t come into heat again. This can make female dogs and cats very restless and sometimes they have a reduced appetite which can lead to more problems. • Less fighting. The main reason cats fight is to do with territory and mating. Without the drive to mate they have no need to fight.

• Wandering. Females will try anything to leave the house when they are on heat to find a mate. This can lead them to getting lost or injured. Also, if a male gets the scent of a female on heat near him, he will also try anything to get out of the house, again leading to him wandering. Children display their artistic talents In January of 2016, an Art School ‘From A to Art’ held a children’s art exhibition in Balbriggan library. At this exhibition talented children from the age of 6-16 showed off the work they completed under the tutelage of artist Violeta Savickiene (owner of Art school From A to Art). Local Councillor Tony Murphy attended the event and was impressed by the passion and talent shown by the children. Violeta invites new members to see classes held in Flemington Community Centre. Balbriggan Taekwondo Academy members in the medals Paul Carroll pictured with members MEMBERS of Balbriggan of his medal-winning team. Taekwondo Academy performed brilliantly at the recent Scion Championships. Four competitors returned home with seven medals. Carly Pagett won silver in Patterns and bronze in Sparring; Nifemi Akinbola won silver in Sparring and bronze in Patterns; Jack won gold in Sparring and bronze in Patterns; and Aaron won a bronze medal in Sparring. Paul Carroll of Balbriggan Taekwondo praised Aaron (Yellow Belt) and Jack (Green Belt) in particular who faced the fear of stepping on the mats for the first time ever in front of over 500 people and still performed well. Balbriggan Taekwondo Academy would also like to say a big thank you to all the competitors, and to Liam Corkery and Scion Taekwondo for a well run and enjoyable Scion Championships.
