New Year resolutions: don’t you just love them. But the big question is: can we keep them? Resolutions aside, 2016 will be no ordinary year on our Emerald Isle as we celebrate the 1916 Rising centenary with thousands of events scheduled to take place all over the country. There will also be a general election which will dominate the first quarter of the year, while in sport, fans of Martin O’Neill’s boys are eagerly awaiting the European Championships in France in June. Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce holds Gala Ball

The high-ceilinged candlelit Martello Room in the Bracken Court Hotel made for a special kind of festive cheer for the annual Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce Gala Ball before Christmas. Following a reception in the foyer a scrumptious four-course dinner was served to over 100 attendees at this muchanticipated event in the Chamber calendar. Chamber President Luke Moriarty addressed those in attendance which included Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Dr James Reilly TD, Mayor of Fingal Cllr David O’Connor and Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid. In his address Mr Moriarty welcomed Ed

Hearne, the new Director of Economic, Enterprise and Tourism Development at Fingal County Council. The Chamber, which recently celebrated 25 years in existence, has positioned itself to play a pivotal role in the future development of Balbriggan with the appointment of its first chief executive, Seán Corrigan. Working with Fingal County Council and with the support of a growing membership, the Chamber will provide the leadership in the business community that will ensure that Balbriggan achieves its goal of being a location of choice for new businesses in Fingal.

Balbriggan priest sets up homeless appeal Fr Chris Derwin, St Peter and Paul’s Church, Balbriggan LAST year will be remembered sadly for the almost daily bulletins in the media about the homeless crisis. A Balbriggan-based priest has set up an appeal which he hopes will gather momentum in the new year. Father Chris Derwin of St Peter and Paul’s Church, has established ‘Home for Homeless’ and is looking for people to support various events he will be organising in the coming months. “One day when walking down Rathmines I met a homeless guy, about 17 or so, and it was lashing rain,” says Fr Chris. “Everyone passed him by, but I felt I couldn’t so I sat on the street beside him. What he said next to me moved me. “He said: you are the first to sit beside me, people think I’m dirty and don’t want anything to do with me’. “Then he said: you’re the first to make eye contact with me. People pass me by all day and don’t even

look at me. It’s like I don’t really exist. “Then he told me I was the first to ask him his name. I gave him every penny I could spare that day and used to meet him on occasion. “We would always have a chat about life, trying always to get him to go home to his parents, trying to get him to consider rehab to get off the drugs. “Then I lost contact with him, due to study work in Maynooth. When I was ordained a priest I preached about Kevin and after mass I heard from one of the parishioners that Kevin had died.” Father Chris felt very sad on hearing this news. “No one should have to be homeless and without support in this country,” he says. “Kevin was one of our own children, lost in the chaos of life. I occasionally offer mass for him and all our poor homeless friends.” Following news that Kevin had died and that a young family had to sleep in a park in Gardiner Street, Father Chris decided to take action. “I launched the ‘Homes for Homeless’ appeal,” he says. “My goal is to buy property and hopefully house people who are waiting on the council to house them. “I have been looking at properties outside Dublin to buy but as yet I don’t have enough money raised. “I have been in contact with Tesco Food cloud

and I will start receiving regular amounts of food so I can go into the city and feed the people that are hungry. “I will be doing further raffles and have registered myself with the Charities Regulatory Authority. “This is not easy as I am working full-time as a priest in Balbriggan. I hope to support those who need the help most once I start acquiring property.” Meanwhile, Father Chris has hit out at the current rent situation that is exacerbating the homeless crisis. “Rent is a complete rip-off in this country,” he states. “I feel it’s about time we start charging a fair amount for people, not just so they can survive but so they can live and afford to better their lives and those of others. “It’s important we help our homeless keep warm and safe. I am accepting hats, scarves, gloves, sleeping bags and mats and basic hygiene products to help people on the streets.” If you’re interested in helping with ‘Homes for Homeless’, please contact Fr Chris Derwin on 087-3572411. All donations will be gratefully accepted for this is not-for-profit appeal. The parish of St Peter and Paul’s is running a concert, ‘The Celtic Tenors and Special Guests’, on April 7 at 8pm in the church. Tickets, which cost €25, are available from the parish office and after masses at the weekends.

New Year full of promise for Remember Us

Members of Remember Us enjoyed a wide range of activities in 2015. A Balbriggan-based social group for young people and adults with special needs, their families and friends, has every reason to look forward to 2016. Remember Us had a busy and exciting 2015, which saw it move a big step closer to achieving its dream of acquring a new premises; organising a number of trips and events for its large membership; and also being nominated for awards in the community it serves. Remember Us’s membership grew to 230 families, impacting on approximately 700 people. Nora Roban, founder/coordinator or Remember Us, told Balbriggan Local: “As we are up and running just over 17 years, I always have the vision that we would need our own base, somewhere our members could call their own and house all our activities under one roof and also develop new services. In 2014 the time was then. “We embarked on a fundraising/marketing campaign, and over the past 18 months we have raised €336,000 to date. “This came about through sheer passion, determination and drive and seeing the benefits the organisation has brought to so many members and their families and what more it can bring when we have our own base. “This is enough to buy the property we have indentified which is in Balbriggan Retail Park and pay all fees associated with it and a portion to start the fit-out of same, which will cost circa €240,000.” Ms Roban said the new base, which is more than 7,000 sq ft in size, will have to be fitted out from scratch. When completed, the premises will comprise a sports hall’ a sensory room, which is vitally important for members who have autism, a games room, which will be developed into a youth café for teen and adult members; activity rooms, to run various programmes and set up a support group

Remember Us continues to grow its membership. for parents of newly diagnosed children with special needs and a parent/toddler group; and an office, storage and kitchen. “We will be looking for companies/business and the community in general to come on board and be part of this vital building for our very special members in the community,” said Ms Roban. You can help by becoming a patron, sponor a room, supply materials/services, make a donation or support fundraising events. “Remember us would love to hear from you,” said Ms Roban. “It would be a real feel-good factor each time you pass the building knowing that you helped us achieve it. “We currently have a two-pronged fundraising campaign going on, one for our new base and one for the day-to-day running of programmes.

“We get a small grant from the HSE towards the programmes and family respite and a small grant from Fingal County Council towards our summer programme. “While we get these small grants they only cover approximately half of the cost to run the programmes. We have one paid position. which is job shared, and the money for this position comes from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs. Some of that money also goes towards programmes. “None of the money we get from fundraising / donations goes towards paying the one member of staff; it goes directly towards putting on the programmes for our special members and towards our new base.”

Events provided in 2015 included: • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday evenings each week, every Saturday and two Fridays of the month for four different age groups. Each age group was eligible to attend the clubs twice to three times per week. Activities included cookery, art & crafts, drama sports, dance outings and lots more. • An Easter camp • A six-week summer programme (four days and one night per week) • Four family respite breakaways where we offered the families a 2/3/4-night break. Families dined together each evening, kids’ clubs were organised and supervised by some of our CE/TUS placements, family disco evenings, family bingo evenings and themed evenings were also organised, Kids’ clubs in the mornings and some outings during the days were also available. Between 130 and 170 people accessed each break. • A parents’/Carers’ Respite Break also took place in September to the Limerick Strand Hotel. • Volunteer recruitment drive • Support and informational to families

Aidan beats a path to Ardgillan for book launch

‘To the Beat of a Savage Drum’ tells the story of James Burns, a drummer in the 27th Inniskilling Regiment of Foot as he begins his epic journey to the Battle of Waterloo. The book’s tagline ‘The drum brings out the

Ardgillan Castle hosted a book launch recently for Aidan J. Herron’s novel titled ‘To the Beat of a Savage Drum’. The launch, which was held in the castle at night, attracted an enthusiastic crowd with the castle Drawing Room filled to capacity for speeches. Invited guests which included Mayor of Fingal Cllr David O’Connor, chief executive of Fingal County Council Paul Reid, Cllr Grainne Maguire and Cllr Tony Murphy, were treated to a festive evening with the castle lit up for Christmas. Grahame Pickett, chairman of the Ardgillan Castle Board gave a rousing and heartfelt

introduction to both Aidan and his novel. Aidan then enthralled the crowd with a reading from his novel, leaving everyone in the room eager to find out the fate of the protagonist. Aidan is the former principal of St Teresa’s National School in Balbriggan and since retiring has devoted much of his time to exploring his passion for history and in particular military history. His keen interest in the Battle of Waterloo and 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment of Foot is tied back to his family connections in Fermanagh, with his mother being from Enniskillen. Aidan has previously published educational works and in 2015 he was a winner of the Irish Writers’ Centre Novel Fair. ‘To the Beat of a Savage Drum’ is his first foray into the world of fiction and has already been critically acclaimed. Aidan is a member of the Ardgillan Castle board and also a volunteer tour guide at the castle. His interest in history led him to the discovery of the castle’s weapons’ collection, which held the Napoleonic drum which is now the cover star of his novel.

Beef steak pot roast Sunday dinner, all in one style, with just one pot to wash! This easy slow cooker dish means your afternoon’s free for some well deserved R&R.

Ingredients • 4 x 250g thick lean beef steaks, all visible fat removed • 200g baby new potatoes • 200g baby carrots • 1 garlic bulb, cloves separated and peeled • 1 tbsp black peppercorns • 2 tbsp white wine vinegar • 200ml boiling beef stock • 2 tbsp dried dill • Salt • Fresh chopped dill, to garnish

Method 1. Place the steaks, vegetables, garlic cloves, peppercorns, vinegar, stock and dill into the slow cooker and stir well. 2. Add salt to taste, cover and cook on LOW for 7-8 hours or until the meat is tender. 3. Serve sprinkled with chopped dill.

Fingal hosts older persons’ convention

The Fingal Senior Citizens’ Forum (Older People Council), in association with the Fingal Age Friendly Alliance and Fingal County Council, recently hosted the National Convention of Older Persons’ Councils, in the Clayton Hotel Dublin Airport. Delegates came from across Ireland and included representatives of Older People Councils, Local Authority Age Friendly County Programme Managers, Older People Council Support Workers and Age Friendly Ireland. Chair of the Fingal Senior Citizen’s Forum, Bob McAlpine, was delighted that the event was hosted in Fingal. “The event was not only an opportunity for members of Older People Councils to network but is also a chance for us to showcase initiatives that we have been involved in and exchange ideas and best practice,” said Mr McAlpine. Chair of the Fingal Age Friendly County

Alliance, Nora Owen, also expressed her pleasure at being able to support the convention. Ms Owen said her role as Chair of the Alliance is to ensure that the voice of older people is heard at local and national level. “The key to an Age Friendly County is collaboration,” she said. “My job is to facilitate conversations and develop partnerships between agencies and organisations who provide services for older people and older people themselves which allows actual implementation and real change to take place. Today was just another way of facilitating this process.” Mayor of Fingal Cllr David O’Connor said he was delighted to have been asked to open the event. “It is great to see so many delegates from across the country representing the voice of older people,” he said. “As First Citizen of Fingal I am delighted we are

hosting this event in Fingal.” Chief executive of Fingal County Council Paul Reid said: “I am delighted as chief executive of Fingal County Council to be part of this event to support our Senior Citizens’ Forum in bringing forward their issues and recognising the challenges ahead. “I am also delighted that Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton, could take time of our his busy schedule to be part of this event with us.” Speakers on the day included representatives from the Active Ageing Partnership, An Garda Síochána, the Netwell Centre (DKIT), Health Service Executive, Age Friendly Ireland and Fingal County Council. Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Richard Bruton and Mayor of Fingal Cllr David O’Connor officially launched the event.

Balbriggan Youth Service to receive funding

MInister James Reilly BALBRIGGAN Youth Service can look forward to the new year after learning that it is to receive €15,000 in funding. Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Dr James Reilly recently announced the allocation of capital grants to 121 youth projects and organisations throughout the country for small to medium scale equipment and upgrade projects. The aim of this capital funding scheme is to provide much needed assistance to youth

projects to improve the facilities and equipment available for their work with young people in their communities. The grants awarded will provide for the upgrade or replacement of equipment or for the purchase of essential equipment to support the running of the project/ organisation. Examples of the projects funded include purchase of mini-buses, IT and multi-media equipment, sport and outdoor pursuit equipment and other essential pieces such as furniture and kitchen upgrades. Minister Reilly said: “I am very pleased to be in a position to announce the allocation of these grants to the 121 successful applicants. “These youth services do vital work in some of the more disadvantaged communities in our society. “I am confident this grant will

assist in improving the quality of the services and their facilities to the benefit of young people involved. “The provision of the funding underscores the Government’s commitment to enhance the quality of services which add such value to our communities.” Minister Reilly thanked youth officers in local Education and Training Boards for their work in supporting local youth projects and their assistance to his Department in the operation of this scheme. The Capital funding scheme for small to medium capital grants is open to applications from Department of Children and Youth Affairs funded projects under the Special Projects for Youth Scheme (SPY), Youth Information Centres (YIC), Young People’s Facilities and Services Fund (YPFSF) and Local Drugs Task Force (LDTF).

Water Charges alert for homeowners A new statutory obligation to retain and pay unpaid water charges from proceeds of sale will commence when Section 48 of the Environment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2015 comes into force in January 2016. The definition of ‘sale’ includes a voluntary transfer or a transfer for less than market value. The section provides that the owner of a dwelling proposing to sell that dwelling shall pay to Irish Water any charge in respect of the dwelling payable by the owner to Irish Water, including any such charge payable by the owner by virtue of Section 23A(4) of the 2013 Act (where the owner has failed to notify Irish Water of the name of the occupier of the dwelling). ALMOST 100 female entrepreneurs attended a Fingal Enterprising Women Network business lunch last week at the Clayton Hotel, Dublin Airport. The attendees were keen to learn from the life and career experiences of Dearbhail McDonald, Legal editor with the Irish Independent. In the course of her address, Dearbhail drew real parallels between the networking she does as a journalist and the networking needs of the business community. “Building relationships is crucial to my professional success,” she told those present. “But more importantly, maintaining those relationships and ensuring that they are mutually beneficial is what makes them invaluable. “My top tip to anyone in business in building your network is to follow up fast. Follow up with new contacts within 24 hours. Make yourself memorable.

“Find an opportunity to meet soon after your initial meeting and build that contact into a real connection.” Oisin Geoghegan, Head of Enterprise in Fingal, committed to providing more business networking opportunities for small business owner/managers. “It is fantastic to see so many female business leaders and entrepreneurs using an opportunity like this to build their business network,” he said. “We are very pleased to kick-start this business support network. I want to ensure that the members collectively take ownership of this network and use it to their benefit – it is after all their network. “We will shortly be surveying members themselves to see what themes they would like to have addressed at network meetings. “Based on this feedback we will organise an exciting schedule of quarterly Fingal Enterprising

Women Network events in 2016, with high quality facilitators and speakers.” The Fingal Enterprising Women Network events are designed to allow attendees to mingle and connect with many new people from a variety of business backgrounds in an open and supportive way. Participants may find opportunities to build relationships with useful suppliers, potential customers and possible partners. Women from many different business sectors, as well as aspiring female entrepreneurs who want to network with and learn from more experienced women in business were in attendance. All came together with a shared goal to build valuable connections for driving their business forward. Ticks and fleas are not just a summer problem

Does your dog or cat go outside, either out the back garden or on a walk around the corner? Ticks and fleas don’t disappear in the winter months. They do decrease in population but your cat and dog still need to be protected against these microscopic parasites. What are ticks and fleas? They are what are known as Ectoparasites (parasites that live on the outside of a living host). There are specific ones for different animals. Both a cat and a god have their own species of tick. But the flea can live and survive on both your cat and dog. Both survive on the blood of your pet, and the tick can also give your pet certain diseases like Lyme disease. How do my pets get them? Ticks are contracted from bushes, trees, overgrown grass ecetera. Any green or hedging that your pet can fit under can be containing ticks and so if your pet goes near these they are at risk of getting a tick. Fleas are contracted by contact with other animals that have fleas or with bedding that have been used by an animal with fleas. Even just meeting another dog with fleas on a walk, your dog can get fleas from him. How can I prevent my pet from getting them? Prevention is better than treatment. From 6-8-weeks-old your dog and cat should start their preventative treatment. This consists of visiting your veterinarian 2-3 times a year and purchasing the tick and flea medication. Once you pet is treated with this medication at least twice a year then they are safe if a flea or tick comes in contact with them. If you think your pet might have either of these parasites or have not treated them in a long time then please contact your local veterinary clinic and speak to the nurse or vet about flea and tick preventatives.

By Patrick Martin It’s a rainy Monday evening as I make my way to Bracken Boxing Club, located beside Balbriggan Train Station. The first thing that greets you is what looks like a bit of graffiti on the exterior of the club’s premises. It’s as far from graffiti as you could get though. The quote is from that great boxing legend of the last century, Jack Dempsey: ‘A champion is someone who gets up when he can’t’. It certainly leaves an impression on someone who likes to dabble in words and is a taster of what to expect inside. Poking my head inside the door I have to duck, bob and weave to get out of harm’s way. The word that immediately springs to mind is 16 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-JANUARY

‘intensity’. The kids, both boys and girls, are going hard at it in their training while Kieran O’Neill and his fellow coaches put them through their paces. Boxing in Ireland has never enjoyed a higher profile, especially since the exploits of one Katie Taylor in the London Olympics, and the successes of the likes of Andy Lee, Michael Conlon and Paddy Barnes, and before them household names such as Michael Carruth, Wayne McCullough and Kenny Egan. At Bracken Boxing Club, which has approximately 50 boxers and 10 coaches on its books, they have their talents too. In December, Kieran O’Neill brought six of his top boxers - Denis Gifford, Christy O’Reilly, Chloe Gray, Niamh Fay, Ben Teeling and Cameron Bennett - to Paris to compete in a tournament just a month after the terrorist attacks

claimed 130 lives in the city. Gifford is the reigning All-Ireland Under 18 Super Heavyweight champion; O’Reilly is a six-times All-Ireland champion; Gray (age 17) and Fay (age 13) also have All-Ireland titles to their name; and both Teeling and Bennett have won Leinster Championships in their respective categories. Three of the aforementioned are also current Ireland internationals – Gifford, O’Reilly and Gray. There are a number of other talents coming through as well at a club, which in its 30 years in existence, has produced 12 All-Ireland Champions and worn 16 international vests. Kieran, who has been with the club from the very start in 1985, attributes these successes to the dedication of the volunteer coaches who give their time freely to nurture these young talents and also to the attitude of the boxers who are eager to learn their craft. “Our coaches do excellent work in preparing our boxers for tournaments,” says O’Neill. “We’ve also received great backing from the Balbriggan community and businesses, who have helped to fund us when we are travelling to tournaments in other countries or when we are hosting teams here.” To mark its 30th anniversary, Bracken Boxing Club invited a team over from Germany last September. The locals won 5-3 at the event held in the City North Hotel. “Our club has never been in a stronger position and we’re looking forward to more success in 2016,” says Kieran. While the youngsters continue to spar with their opponents, and the coaches give them an earful of sound advice, I try to imagine some of our greatest boxers taking their first tentative steps into the ring and putting on the gloves for the first time. So can Bracken Boxing Club, still heaving with sweat and intensity from a lively training session – produce a future Olympian. “Absolutely we can,” says Kieran. You can tell by the manner of his response that this is not just fighting talk. “All the clubs want to produce an Olympian,” he says. “It’s the Holy Grail. Francie Barrett represented Ireland in the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996, and he was training in the back of a 40-foot container. Anything is possible if you work hard enough. “I have no doubt that an Olympian can come out of this club and that’s what we will be striving for in the years ahead.” *Bracken Boxing Club members train on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights from 6.45pm to 8.30pm.

Balbriggan teams compete in Futsal League THE weather is usually bad at the start of the new year. For football lovers, getting a game in can be extremely difficult, and is particularly frustrating if you received some new gear as a Christmas present and are chomping at the bit. But despair not. The popular Indoor Futsal league returns to Gormanston College in January for three weeks after a well-deserved Christmas break. This joint venture between the FAI, North Dublin Schoolboys/girls League (NDSL) and Fingal County Council is well represented by Fingal teams. Both the Balbriggan and Lusk areas will be contributing hugely to this Under 8 participation event. There are seven teams from Lusk Utd and four from Balbriggan FC who are getting an insight into the programme that countries such as Spain and Brazil have embraced. Not only that, but they also get to play football while the bad weather ensures the postponement of fixtures around the county. World stars such as Messi, Ronaldo and Xavi have all played and Futsal and credit the concept as being a major tool that assisted their development. The FAI view Futsal as a key programme for development of young footballers and are delighted to assist the North Dublin Schoolboys/girls League (NDSL).
