Murphy launches bid for Dáil seat Independent Councillor Tony Murphy, who represents the Balbriggan Local Electoral Area (LEA) on Fingal County Council, formally announced his bid for a Dáil seat in the general election at a packed function in the Bracken Court Hotel. Cllr Murphy was supported at the launch by Senator Feargal Quinn, Deputy Shane Ross TD, leader of the Independent Alliance (IA), Deputy Finian McGrath TD (Ind) and fellow Fingal County Councillors. Addressing his enthusiastic supporters, Cllr Murphy stated that one of his primary goals when elected will be to ensure that Balbriggan and North Fingal gets the supports and infrastructure that it deserves but which have “not been made available by successive Governments”. Cllr Murphy believes that jobs are the key to addressing many of the shortcomings in the area. “Balbriggan and North Fingal suffers from excessively high levels of unemployment, questionable housing developments and social housing allocations and dilapidated town centres,” he said. “I am committed to achieving more employment, better housing and better town centres.” Cllr Murphy was elected to Fingal County Council in 2014 for the first time, finishing second in a field comprising 23 candidates. He said that since his election to the council he

Balbriggan Community Council makes progress

Balbriggan Community Council is making progress since it was formed. PHOTO: TONY HEALY PHOTOGRAPHY A couple of years ago ‘people power’ won the day in Balbriggan when a decision to move the Carnegie Library from George’s Square to Gallen Mills was overturned. The beautiful library has been in its current location for more than a 100 years, and a proposal to move an Intreo office into the building brought protestors out onto the streets in their droves. Balbriggan Community Council was born out of the successful campaign to keep the library in its rightful place. Alice Davis, a spokesperson for Balbriggan Community Council, recalls the campaign. “Everyone was full of ideas as to what we needed to do to bring the town back to its full potential and we all wanted to run before we could walk,” she says. “That was not really feasible and we realised that we needed to find out what funding, plans, etc were already in place for the town and make connections with the various Fingal County Council officials and other bodies who would

be in a position to listen and help us achieve our aims. “As a committee we started off with a membership of 18. However, as time went on, some people were not able to continue on the committee for various reasons.” The committee meets up on a regular basis and puts the building blocks in place to ensure that it is working to the correct governance. “We are setting up as a limited company, which down the line will enable us to apply for bigger funding should we need to,” says Alice. “We have fundraised to raise funds for our insurance and the website. We held a cake sale, street bucket collection, and bag packing.” During the course of the year meetings were held with newly elected representatives and Fingal County Council officials. “We felt it was important that we continue a dialogue with people and build confidence in the work we wished to undertake,” explains Alice. “We had a very successful Open Day again this

Balbriggan Library to host One Race Exhibition The One Race Exhibition - part of the Show Racism the Red Card Campaign – will have a second run at Balbriggan Library from Saturday, January 16 to Saturday, January 30. The exhibition was launched last month at Blanchardstown Library. The annual competition, now in its seventh year, calls for young people to develop creative messages about racism and integration, through written, visual and audiovisual means. Fingal Schools are well represented in the competition again this term. Chief executive of Fingal County Council Paul Reid said: “I am delighted

year. We have sub committees, the Planning Committee, the Sports and Recreation Committee and Age Friendly. “Through these committees we are hoping to be successful in having a Skate Board Park and two new playgrounds. There is a lot to do and it will take some time. “We are currently waiting on the return to the town of the clock and bell belonging to the library, and also the records of the social history of the town.” Balbriggan Community Council’s agm will be held in April 2016 and it is hoping that more people will become involved in the work that is has started. “If you are interested, you can join any of the sub committees or get in touch with us through Facebook,” adds Alice. “We take this opportunity to wish everybody a happy and peaceful Christmas and a healthy New Year.

Corrigan takes on full-time Balbriggan Chamber role President of Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce and local businessman Luke Moriarty recently launched a groundbreaking new policy document for the town. Setting out its vision for the development of the town in the next five years, the strategy document, entitled ‘Shaping Balbriggan for Business’, envisages Seán Corrigan Balbriggan becoming a sought-after location in which to live, work, and do business. It also outlines key objectives the Chamber will pursue in order to enhance the town’s appeal for residents, visitors, business, and investors. A key element underpinning the Chamber’s vision for Balbriggan is the appointment of a fulltime chief executive officer (CEO), to develop and drive the business organisation’s plans. Seán Corrigan, a former manager of Bank of Ireland in Balbriggan, was recently confirmed as the Chamber’s new CEO. Mr Moriarty strongly welcomed the appointment that was made following a public recruitment campaign which attracted a substantial number of

applicants. “Seán Corrigan brings to this role a wealth of local knowledge, and business and community development experience,” said Mr Moriarty. “The appointment of a full-time executive has long been considered central to the Chamber’s work in developing our town, and realising its potential for everyone.” A graduate of Dublin City University and the Irish Management Institute, Mr Corrigan has been actively involved in the Balbriggan business and social community for over 20 years. He was instrumental in establishing Balbriggan’s successful Fumbally Exchange co-working hub in 2012, as well as, most recently, the Balbriggan Men’s Shed in 2015. Speaking following his appointment, Mr Corrigan said Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce has the potential to drive growth and prosperity for everyone, and to improve quality of life in Balbriggan. He said it was an honour and a privilege to be asked to work on the strategic plan. “The key areas of economic development, tourism, planning, and infrastructure, as well as education, sports and recreation are earmarked as drivers of Balbriggan’s future prosperity and development,” Mr Corrigan told Balbriggan Local. “Working together, and in conjunction with the State bodies, we can change Balbriggan for the better, and I am delighted to take on this steering

role, alongside my colleagues within Balbriggan Chamber.” Mr Moriarty outlined key achievements of Balbriggan Chamber that will be built on in the coming five-year plan. These included regular liaison with the local authority and the IDA, and marketing the town’s new Creative Quarter, as well as the area’s infrastructure, connectivity, and land availability, with a view to attracting inward investment. There will be continued support from the business community for the excellent local educational establishments, as well as ongoing development of sports and recreation facilities for young and old. Actively promoting and developing the area’s tourism potential such as Bremore Castle and Ardgillan Demesne, and ensuring local planning and development is in keeping with the town’s social and commercial needs will also be a focus of the strategy. Mr Moriarty said that the strength of the Chamber is its ability to lobby locally and nationally, with a unified voice, and that the time is now right to push forward with co-ordinated plans. “Coming out of recession, there is a renewed vigour to work towards the Chamber’s vision of Balbriggan 2020, as a town full of opportunity and diversity, where citizens and businesses thrive, and visitors are welcomed,” he added.

Free parking boost for Christmas

Fingal County Council is once again getting

into the festive spirit by offering free parking in Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush, Malahide and Swords on three consecutive Saturdays in the lead up to Christmas.

Shoppers and residents will be permitted to park in the council’s Pay & Display areas on December 5, 12 and 19 free of charge. The council introduced the initiative a few years ago to support local retailers.

Mince Pies

Method

1. Whisk the egg whites with the artificial sweetener in a clean, dry bowl until they stand in stiff peaks. 2. Beat the egg yolks with the nutmeg, orange zest and juice. Chop up the Christmas pudding and stir into the yolks with the fromage frais. 3. Carefully fold the beaten egg whites into the fromage frais mixture and spoon into a freezerproof container. 4. Freeze until nearly firm and frozen, then remove from the freezer and stir well. Replace in the freezer until frozen and firm. 5. Remove the ice cream from the freezer about 10-15 minutes before serving to allow it to soften slightly. Tip: Because of a very slight risk of salmonella, vulnerable people such as the elderly, babies and pregnant women should not eat raw eggs.

225g plain flour pinch of salt 110g margarine or butter Cold water, for mixing

For the filling:

• 16 level tbsp mincemeat • 1 level tbsp icing sugar for dusting

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C Fan/Gas Mark 5. Lightly spray some bun trays with low calorie cooking spray. 2. Make the pastry. Sift the flour and salt into a mixing bowl. Add the fat, cut up into little pieces. Gently rub it in with your fingertips. Add sufficient cold water to mix to a ball that leaves the sides of the bowl clean. Rest in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. 3. Roll out the pastry thinly on a lightly floured surface. Cut out 32 rounds with a 7½cm fluted cutter. Use to line the prepared bun tins. 4. Divide the mincemeat between the pastry cases. Roll out the remaining pastry trimmings and make some little stars with a small star cutter. Use to decorate the tops of the tarts. 5. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, until the pastry is crisp and lightly coloured. Cool on a wire rack and dust lightly with sifted icing sugar.

8 sheets of leaf gelatine 11.5g sachet of sugar-free raspberry jelly crystals 1cm piece of root ginger, peeled and grated 1 cinnamon stick 1 star anise 2 cloves 6 cardamom pods 100ml red wine 1 tsp sweetener Grated zest of 1 orange 400g mixed berries, thawed if frozen 400g low fat custard from a can or carton 500g fat free natural fromage frais 1 tsp vanilla bean extract 1 level tsp edible gold and silver decorations

Method

1. Put the gelatine sheets into a bowl of cold water and leave for 10-12 minutes or until softened. 2. Meanwhile, stir the jelly crystals into 400ml of boiling water and set aside. 3. Place a saucepan over a low heat and add the ginger, cinnamon stick, star anise, cloves, cardamom pods, red wine, sweetener and orange zest. Heat until hot but not boiling. 4. Squeeze the excess water out of the gelatine sheets and put the sheets into a large bowl. 5. Strain the wine mixture through a sieve on to the gelatine sheets then add the jelly mixture, stir well and leave to cool. 6. Put the fruit into a large glass serving bowl and pour in enough of the cooled jelly mixture to come about two-thirds of the way up the side, leaving room for the custard and fromage frais (you can use any leftover jelly mixture to make individual jellies). Chill overnight. 7. Spoon the custard over the jelly, then whisk together the fromage frais and Vanilla and spoon on top. Scatter over the edible decorations to serve.

You may have noticed increased activity around the old AIB bank premises on St George’s Square, Balbriggan, over the past number of months. Jigsaw North Fingal moved into the building in October, having outgrown its previous premises on Dublin Street. Jigsaw is part of a national network of projects supported by Headstrong, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health. Jigsaw offers a free and confidential one-to-one mental health support service to young people aged between 12 and 25 who are living, working or studying in the North Fingal area. In order to ensure the service adequately

meets the needs of young people in the community, Jigsaw North Fingal actively recruits young people aged 16-23 years to become part of the Jigsaw North Fingal Youth Advisory Panel (YAP). This panel of young people offers advice on the development of Jigsaw support services for young people and members took an active part in the selection of the new Jigsaw premises on George’s Square. They are currently advising on how the interior design of the building can promote a welcoming and friendly space for young people. All YAP members take an active role on the interview panels for Jigsaw staff recruitment. YAP engages the community by promoting the Jigsaw service at a local level and representatives attended this year’s Balbriggan Summerfest and Rush Harbour Festival, providing information and sweet treats to attendees. Youth participation in decision-making is central to the Jigsaw North Fingal Project. If you are aged between 16 and 23 and have an interest in promoting positive mental health as part of Jigsaw’s Youth Advisory Panel, they invite you to get involved to: •Represent the views of young people in North Fingal •Represent Jigsaw in the community •Support the running of the Jigsaw Service Jigsaw’s youth and community engagement worker Jenny Hayes works closely with YAP members. “Jigsaw North Fingal aims to support young people’s mental health in a particular way,” she

said. “Listening to views and ideas from our YAP members on how we run our service for young people is how we do it. “The North Fingal area has a vibrant youth population with over 8,000 young people living in the Balbriggan area alone (Census 2011). “Our young people have a lot to offer and becoming a YAP member is one way young people can develop their skills and give back to their community.” YAP member Alex Haidurov (18) said: YAP members Alex Haidurovs and Kestusis Gelazis.

“Volunteer work makes me feel good about myself, and it is a perfect reason to go outside, do something; be active in community. “It’s safe to say that participating in the YAP significantly helps my own mental health and self-confidence.” There is no problem too small to access the service. Local author launches new book A LOCAL author launched his new book recently at the Irish Writers’ Centre in Dublin. ‘To the Beat of a Savage Drum’, written by Skerries resident Aidan J Herron, joins the very short list of fiction set around the Battle of Waterloo and commemorates the 27th Inniskillings, the only Irish Regiment of Foot to take part in that epic encounter. Enlisting as a drummer in the 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment of Foot, James Burns discovers brotherhood and brutality in equal measure until his depot life is interrupted by the call to join Wellington’s Allied Army. But nothing could prepare him for the journey to Waterloo or for the terror of drumming men towards the slaughter at La Haye Sainte. And, in a chance encounter, James Burns finally discovers the savage within himself. Mr Herron, a former Principal at St Teresa’s Primary School Balbriggan, was a winner of the Irish Writers’ Centre 2015 Novel Fair. Since retiring Aidan is fortunate to have more time to devote to writing fiction. All of his previous publications were in the field of education. He combines his passion for history and military research with voluntary tour guiding in Ardgillan Castle.

Winter Wonderland with Sparkly Silver and Gold Thereâ€™s something magical about a winter wonderland image so why not recreate it on your dining table. Cover your table with a white tablecloth. Layer each place setting with a place mat/platter, then a plate and a bowl. Wrap the cutlery in napkins, and add champagne and wine glasses along with a personalised place card. Church candles or white tapered candles, sparkly t-light holders, silver and gold baubles in a hurricane lamp placed on a circular mirrored table platter will all add to the magic.

Don’t forget your pets at Christmas time Safety tips Try to place your Christmas tree in a corner where it can’t be easily knocked over and is kept secure. Don’t have ornaments, lights or tinsel hanging from the last few branches of the tree, so when your cat or dog walks near or under the tree, it’s the branches they are touching and not the expensive ornaments or dangerous lights and tinsel. If you have purchased, or are planning on purchasing a live Christmas tree, please be aware that the pine needles can be dangerous to our pets if ingested so keep them tidied up over the holidays. Holly, mistletoe and poinsettia plants are all poisonous to both cats and dogs, so if you are buying any of these to decorate your home with this year please keep out of reach to all four-legged family members. Routine is important for our pets to stay happy and healthy so just because the house is decorated and there are more family members around or shorter days, try to keep your pets’ routine the same. So feed at the normal time, go on walks at the normal time, same area and same amount of time and general day-to-day things that they are used to. Keep doing them.

Late Night Soccer Leagues up and running The onset of winter doesn’t mean your social activities have to come to an end, especially if you’re an enthusiast of the beautiful game. Balbriggan locals were delighted to begin the latest instalment of the Garda/FAI Late Night Soccer League in the town last month. On Friday, November 13, the youngsters showed off their football skills under the floodlights on the all-weather pitch at St Mologa’s School. The leagues, which run for four weeks, caters for people aged 13-15 and 16-21. The action starts at 9.30pm and continues to 11pm, and the great thing is that it’s free to enter. There is structure to the leagues too, with regional finals taking place after the local league ends, giving the youngsters a chance to compete against teens from other areas who have won through from their respective Friday Night leagues. On the opening night in Balbriggan, there was a great turnout despite the inclement weather. The teens had an extra spring in their step when they heard that Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane’s charges had secured a 1-1 draw in Bosnia on the road to qualification for the European Championships next summer. The Late Night League (LNL) has been a huge success all over the country since its inception in 2008. The leagues are aimed at encouraging young people to participate in meaningful activities, thus reducing the potential for anti-social behaviour in their communities. The hugely successful initiative is based around the concept of using football as a tool for social inclusion and learning. The leagues are run by the FAI’s co-funded Development Officers in conjunction with Dublin City Council, Fingal County Council, South Dublin County Council, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, the Department for Children & Youth Affairs, Gardaí from all six Divisions in the Dublin Metropolitan Region, while Dublin Bus provide transport to and from the Regional Finals.

Ardgillan Parkrun’s success continues The current running craze in Ireland shows no sign of abating – which is a good thing - with more and more people getting bitten by the athletics bug. One of the most successful initiatives in recent years has been the introduction of parkruns. These 5k (3.1 miles) events take place every Saturday morning in local parks including Ardgillan Castle and Demesne, Newbridge House and Malahide Castle and Demesne. At Ardgillan, the course is run on a mixture of trail paths and grass. It is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. The beauty of this initiative is that it is accessible to all levels of runners, joggers and walkers, and children are allowed to take part (those under the age of 11 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This month, the Parkrun at Ardgillan will take place on December 5, 12 and 19. All are welcome to take part and get fit in the run up (no pun intended) to Christmas!

Father Chris’s homeless appeal

Father Chris Derwin, a priest at St Peter and Paul’s Church, Balbriggan, recently launched a ‘Home for Homeless’ appeal and so far has raised over €3,500. All donations will be gratefully accepted for this not-for-profit appeal. Not one person will ever be paid from any funds raised; every cent raised is for homeless only. On Saturday, December 5, Fr Chris is holding a Sale of Work at the Three Patrons in Rathgar Church Hall from 10am to 4pm, and will

be organising further events in the future, including a number of raffles. Fr Chris has registered with the Charities Regulatory Authority and is in the process of sorting paperwork for Revenue to gain a charity status number. CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTS:

The switching on of the Christmas Tree Lights in Balbriggan will take place at George’s Square on the evening of Friday, December 4.

SANTA’S VISIT:

Santa will arrive at Convent Lane, Rush on Tuesday, December 1 and will be staying until December 23. Children can visit Santa and Mrs Claus and will receive hot chocolate and a gift. Also, market stalls for Christmas shopping. Admission is €10 per child and €2 per adult.
