Much-needed jobs boost for Balbriggan

Balbriggan received a much-needed jobs boost recently when Alter Pharma officially inaugurated its new headquarters for its worldwide operations

in the town. The company also announced plans to add 80 new jobs bringing total employment onsite to 120 by 2018. Alter Pharma chief executive Pieter Van Rompay joined Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Mary Mitchell O’Connor and staff from its sister site in Belgium to officiate at the opening ceremony. Minister Mitchell O’Connor said the pharma industry makes a huge contribution to the Irish economy in terms of jobs and manufacturing exports, and is one of the fastest growing sectors. “I welcome Alter Pharma’s continued commitment to Ireland and its decision to base its HQ here is great news for both Balbriggan and Ireland,” she said. “This is a continued testament to Ireland’s skilled workforce and I’m delighted that this investment will bring a further 80 jobs to Ireland.” Mr Van Rompay said: “Opening our new €5 million facility underlines our commitment to Ireland and will allow for our rapid expansion plans. “We look forward to continuing to grow our excellent team here to complement our product portfolio.” Fingal Senator Dr James Reilly was among the local public representatives to welcome the news. “This is a major boost to Balbriggan and signals

a bright future for the town,” he said. “Balbriggan has often felt left behind by the rest of Dublin but this is certainly a step in the right direction. “It’s especially good to see hi-tech companies like Alter Pharma move here because that’s where the future is. I know that there are also other global hi-tech companies currently looking to set-up in the area.” Senator Reilly said it’s great to see big companies in flagship industries realising the potential of north county Dublin and coming here to create jobs. “We have the infrastructure, the location and the skilled workforce that hi-tech companies like Alter Pharma need,” he said. “You can see that with Diana and Mari Louise from Loreto Secondary School who came third at the EU Contests for Young Scientists this year. We’re close to the airport, the motorway network and to Northern Ireland, which is ideal. “We need to push on and keep marketing ourselves as a great place to come and set up business. “As Seanad Spokesperson on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation that’s just what I’m going to do.” Senator Reilly added: “We are being successful so far which is demonstrated by the unemployment figures in Balbriggan which are down by 11.5 per cent in the last year.’’

Balbriggan Guide Dogs’ branch to hold fundraiser at Ardgillan The Balbriggan/North County Dublin branch of Irish Guide Dogs is holding a Coffee Morning and Dog Walk at Ardgillan Castle on Friday, October 14. The meeting point is at the Upper Car Park at Ardgillan Castle where there will be free parking. The registration time is 10am. The registration fee is €5 per person and €10 for a family. The walk will commence at 10.30am and the coffee and chat will take place at PAWS café at 11.30am. Fees collected on the day will go directly to the Balbriggan/North County Dublin branch. All those involved in the walk are total volunteers and all money made goes to the training of more guide dogs for blind people and more assistance dogs for families who have a child with autism. All doggies are welcme and please tell your friends. Meanwhile, the branch’s 2017 Guide Dogs calendar, a must for all dog lovers, is now available and also its 2016 Christmas cards. TGI Fridays provides food for children’s day out TGI Fridays Swords provided food, including dessert, for around 1,500 children who attended this year’s Dublin Taxidrivers’ Special Children’s Day Out on September 13. The taxi drivers took the children with special needs out for a big day of fun in the capital. Children with special needs from over 35 hospitals and centres from across the city met at Parnell Square where the parade was officially launched by the Lord Mayor of Dublin Brendan Carr. The event kicked off with a live DJ, street theatre, balloon modelling and plenty of goodies for all. Then the cavalcade of taxis along with their Garda escort paraded down O’Connell Street en route to the Tote Hall at Leopardstown Racecourse. Entertainment for the afternoon included boy bands, face painters, magicians, clowns and a laser show. NRC Taxis proudly sponsored this very worthwhile event.

Plenty of treats in store for Halloween

Children love to dress up at Halloween.

By Patrick Martin The evenings are getting shorter, the mornings are getting cooler and those long bright evenings are but a distance memory as another inconsistent summer has slipped through our grasp. However, while the changing of the seasons can bring with it an air of gloom, despair not. Halloween, and all the excitement it entails, is almost upon us once more, and is the last fun festival we have to enjoy before the countdown to Christmas begins. Local children (as well as the adults) will already be entertaining thoughts of what they’ll be dressing up as with October 31 fast approaching. Every year the costumes get more and more adventurous with plenty of creativity on show for us to admire. Children are becoming more imaginative with their choice of outfit and there is always the added incentive of competitions for the Best Costume to send them into creative mode. Of course, Trick or Treat will never go out of fashion, and especially for the younger ones, it’s probably the most magical part of the whole Halloween experience. However, there are usually lots of other things to do locally so keep an eye out for events, including Halloween camps and Ghostbus tours that may be taking place in the community. There will also be a mid-term break for the children to enjoy (and their teachers!), and the last bank holiday of the year to look forward to. This year it actually falls on Monday, October 31. Although Halloween is always a magical time for the youngsters, there are safety issues that can’t be ignored, especially if the children are attending bonfires. Because, the clock will have gone back an hour the previous weekend, it will be darker earlier, and it’s probably a good idea to have your children dressed in bright colours if they are going around the doors Trick or Treating. Also, it’s vital that adults supervise the children at all times. For many years, bonfires on green spaces in residential areas were a main feature of Halloween, and continue to be a huge attraction for people of all ages.

However, while the sight of a blazing fire illuminating the night sky can add more than a frisson of excitement to the Halloween experience, bonfires come with a major health warning. Horror stories emerging from the Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments in our hospitals over the Halloween period are becoming all too common with some unfortunate people sadly ending up with life-altering injuries that could so easily have been prevented with safety precautions. The fact of the matter is: illegal bonfires can be highly dangerous and can cause a serious amount of damage to people and the environment. Indeed, local authorities, including Fingal County Council, are left counting the cost financially long after the last bonfire has fizzled out. Of course, this is money that if it were redirected towards providing local amenities, would benefit the entire community all year round. At this time of year, spare a thought too for the excellent work carried out by our emergency services that are on standby to deal with every eventuality on their busiest night of the year. Despite these warnings, don’t lose sight of the fact that Halloween is meant to be a special time in which to have fun. Stay safe and enjoy all the events that are happening in the community. Let’s hope the locals in Balbriggan have a great time and provide the wow factor with their range of costumes! At Wooly Ward’s Farm, they’re getting ready for the 2016 Halloween Experience.

Recipe for Halloween Bat Wings Parents might think it a bit disgusting because of the colour but it’s healthy and really appeals to kids! By: Minichefs Fifteen chicken wings; one large clove of garlic; three tablespoons of Muscovado Sugar; three tablespoons of light Soy Sauce or Worcester Sauce; three tablespoons of Tomato Puree; two tablespoons of Runny Honey; Black, Blue and Green Food Colouring    Instructions Preheat oven to 109C/375F/ Gas 5. Put wings in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil. Cook for about 20 minutes.  While waiting for the wings to cook prepare the sauce. Crush the clove of garlic then add sugar, soy sauce, tomato puree & honey and mix really well together. Add the food colouring about three drops at a time for each colour until the sauce looks black in colour. Pour into an oven proof dish (large enough for the wings). Drain the wings thoroughly then carefully add them to the sauce and coat evenly. Bake in the oven for a further 15 minutes or until the sauce has thickened and turn the wings over again. Big interest in Balbriggan shop front scheme At the September meeting of Fingal County Council, chief executive Paul Reid reported that over 50 retailers in Balbriggan have expressed an interest in the new shop front retail scheme which the council is running in collaboration with Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce. The scheme will be rolled out between September and December and follows the publishing by the council of a document setting out the range of economic stimulus initiatives underway and planned for the town. The council, in conjunction with Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce and local councillors, recently launched a plan aimed at boosting the local economy. â€˜Stimulating the Balbriggan Economyâ€™ will comprise shortterm initiatives and medium term proposals aimed at reinvigorating the town centre, promoting tourism and fostering long-term prosperity. The first element of the plan is a pilot initiative, the Balbriggan Town Shop Front Enhancement Grant

Linders Renault – A big company with a bigger heart

A local charity received a brand new van recently after its message of hope won over the heart of Linders Motors Fleet Manager Ciaran Curran. The Andy Morgan Foundation have been donating ‘Buddy Benches’ to schools with the aim of allowing children, who may be feeling under pressure, to take time out and sit quietly. The benches are built by local Men’s Sheds and prisoners in Wheatfield Prison. However, the Foundation found that it was unable to deliver the benches because it didn’t have the necessary transport. Joanne Fetherston, partner of the late Andy Morgan, said they just took it upon themselves to ask for a van as they had nothing to lose. They hoped they might get a van that had been traded in. However, their plight plucked the heartstrings of Mr Curran. Mr Curran took the story to the company’s bosses and they were only too delighted to help such a wonderful bunch of selfless people. Mr Curran called the Foundation’s Angie McEvoy in for a meeting to see what could be done to help. Linders’ bosses were blown away at the meeting by the Foundation’s work. Mr Curran said they knew they had to lend their support. “The concept of the Buddy Bench and the Foundation itself do so much great work and they are local to us here in North Dublin,” he said. Ms Fetherston said: “We have lots of schools waiting and now that we have the very generous gift of the van we can get things moving.” The Andy Morgan Foundation was set up in 2011. Its aim is to spread the message of HOPE to everyone who has lost someone to suicide and those suffering with depression, and to help children and teenagers.

Andy Morgan was a popular and outgoing local man who took his own life on New Year’s Eve 2010 to the utter devastation and shock of his partner Joanne, his three children and many friends. In the years since his death, Joanne and Andy’s friends have focused their efforts on ensuring others don’t have to go through what they’ve experienced. The Andy Morgan Foundation, set up in Andy’s memory, has since raised money for local suicide prevention and support services. The Foundation is now rolling out ‘Make A Bracelet Workshops’ in all primary schools with the help of secondary schoolchildren.

What the banks don’t want you to know By Dave Kavanagh Most people use banks for a variety of services and products for convenience. In many cases, people assume that their bank is giving them the most suitable products for the best value but is that really the case? Quite often, a bank is limited in the range of options it has to offer but won’t necessarily tell you this because they want you to buy their products and make them more profit. Some of the most common areas where we see this being the case, include mortgage protection, life & serious illness cover, home insurance, personal loans and current accounts. When people apply for mortgages (usually the biggest financial obligation you will probably have in your life) the associated products required can seem secondary in comparison and quite often, the bank arranges to put these other products in place for you. In many cases the bank is tied to just one company’s offering, for example with mortgage protection, so they are not in a position to offer you alternative mortgage protection that could be much cheaper. You are under no obligation to take out any

such products with the bank that provides your mortgage. Even if you did so some years back, you can still compare today and if you can get mortgage protection that is sufficient to cover your remaining balance and term and it is cheaper than what you are paying, you are quite entitled to replace it. This is usually more noticeable with personal life or serious illness cover, as the premium will usually be higher, leading to a larger saving. The same is often the case with home insurance where we see people who have their home insurance premium deducted with their mortgage payment so just leave it as it is, when in fact, they can be paying close to double what they could be insuring their home by shopping around each year. With competition in banking meaning that options constantly change, it is well worth researching alternatives to make sure you are getting the best value. The charges on current accounts can be quite excessive when closely examined and it may be that your particular pattern of use with your current account would incur much lower charges elsewhere. The same can be said when applying for personal loans or car loans. Check the interest rate

and the repayments. Are there any additional fees with the application? Is the interest rate fixed or variable? Are there penalties for early repayment? Does your credit union have a better option? Yes, there is a little bit of extra work involved but the savings can make it very worthwhile. A €20 per month saving on a mortgage protection plan with 20 years remaining, is €4,800 in total. People will often take the time to compare products in a supermarket to see if one option is a few cents cheaper than another but yet not take the time to compare things that are deducted by direct debit despite the potential of much larger savings. It really is worth taking a little time to make sure you are getting the best value for your hardearned money. Council selected for Housing Agency project Fingal County Council has been invited to work with the Housing Agency on a vacant properties project. The pilot research project will explore ways in which local authorities can precisely identify vacant properties and the reasons for the vacancies with the objective of acquiring properties for social housing. In his report to the September meeting of the council, chief executive Paul Reid said that the recent Preliminary Census of Population report revealed that the vacant dwellings rate fell from seven per cent in 2011, to 5.5 per cent in 2016 which was considerably lower than the national average of 12.8 per cent and the regional average of 6.9 per cent. Mr Reid also reported that there were 40 void social housing units at the end of August and explained to councillors that it was virtually impossible to return a lower figure of voids from a housing stock of over 5,000 homes. “That is the lowest percentage of voids of stock,” said Mr Reid. “We would all like it to be zero but it will never be. That is normal stock churn and we have less than one per cent of our stock in voids.” He added that the council places voids in two categories depending on the level of

repairs required and the turnaround times range from eight to 12 weeks for category one voids and eight to 16 weeks for category two. “We have pretty good processes,” he said. Mr Reid revealed that 60 per cent of applicants for Housing Support within Fingal have responded to letters sent out by the council’s housing department as part of the preparation of a Summary of Social Housing Need Assessment under the 2009 Housing Act. The preliminary closing date was August 19 and reminder letters have been issued to those applicants who have not yet responded. “The onus is on the resident to advise us if they have moved. We are doing everything in our power to make contact with people,” said Mr Reid. He also stated that the council is currently in the process of identifying suitable qualifying projects as part of the €200 million Local Infrastructure Housing Activation Fund which was recently established under Rebuilding Ireland, the Government’s Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness. The aim of this fund is to support the development of critical infrastructures, such as roads, which will facilitate and make viable the use of zoned lands for larger housing developments.

Let’s be honest: we Irish just love a party and will celebrate anything at the drop of a hat. So it might be better to steer clear of that piece of mistletoe which caught your eye as soon as you walked in the door. Remember at all times that your reputation is on the line and one wrong move could have diastrous consequences and ruin your career prospects. Red Kites programme a success

The successful fledging of young red kites in Fingal has been confirmed.

This summer the Golden Eagle Trust was overjoyed to announce the confirmed successful fledging of young red kites in Fingal. Two nests are now confirmed to have fledged a total of three chicks in 2016 in the county. The Golden Eagle Trust (GET), along with project partners National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Welsh Kite Trust, brought back red kites to Ireland between 2007 and 2011.

The Fingal Red Kite release programme was part of the final and fifth year of an ambitious project to re-establish Red Kites in Ireland. The GET managed the Fingal Red Kite project, which was funded by Fingal LEADER Partnership through the Rural Development Programme 2007- 2013 and NPWS. Fingal County Council and a private landowner hosted and facilitated the two separate release cages. In 2011 the final batch of 53 red kites were released and saw these graceful raptors released including at these strategic locations in Fingal. The Fingal sites were located half way between the initial red kite release locations in County Wicklow and County Down. Dr Marc Ruddock, Red Kite Project Manager for GET, said the project was aimed to maximise the final year of the reintroduction and to help establish a contiguous east coast All-Ireland red kite population. “We know this year that there are now Fingal kites known to be breeding in County Down and County Wicklow and both Northern Ireland and Wicklow kites are also recorded in Fingal so we are buoyant that the reintroduction can be considered a remarkable success in Ireland,” he said. Monitoring of the red kites has been undertaken since kites were released in July 2011 but unfortunately the project was beset with unexpected losses in the first 12 months with 10 kites confirmed dead during radio-tracking. These deaths were not considered in vain as it allowed the project team to identify a previously unknown threat to kites and other raptors in this area from second generation rodenticides and these deaths contributed to the formation of the national Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) to raise awareness and understanding of these important chemicals. Hans Visser, Biodiversity Officer for Fingal County Council, said: “The last time we had red kites breeding in North County Dublin would have been more than a century ago, so this is a pretty amazing result.”

GHOSTBUSTERS PEASY POTATO Cook and mash potatoes with a drop of milk. Cook peas. Keep a few for eyes aside and blitz the rest in a blender. Add a few drops of water to make a thick green paste. Melt in some cheddar cheese to make tasty cheezy peas. Spoon a puddle of the blended peas onto a plate. Assemble a tablespoon of potato into a mountain shape and place on top of the green pea slop! Add two peas as eyes onto the potato stacks.

SPOOKY ‘SANDWITCH’ SNAKE: Chop a cheese string into even sized round chunks. Place cherr y tomatoes in between cheese chunks. Chop top and tail off cucumber and use as the head and tail of snake. Place a pea on top of a piece of sweetcorn and use cream cheese/hummus to make them stick to each other and to the cucumber head as eyes. Chop a carrot into the shape of a tongue and place sticking out of the cucumber head.

It is an inclusive club and all the members are representative of the diversity of Balbriggan. There are runners from all parts of this community as well as surrounding communities. Balbriggan Roadrunners is registered as a club with the Fingal Sports Council. Runners range from beginners to very experienced, running various distances from 5km, 10km and upwards - many having also progressed to running marathons. Balbriggan Roadrunners also have a sister club called Balbriggan and District Athletics (Senior) which is registered with Athletics Ireland and takes the opportunity to enter national championships and progress runners interested in entering competitive events.

They meet four times a week and have over 800 members with over 100 who turn up for their scheduled runs. The scheduled runs take place every Monday and Friday at 7.30pm from the car park at St Peter and Paul’s Church. The ‘beginners’ or ‘Couch to Roadrunners’ group meet every Tuesday and Thursday, also at 7.30pm from the car park at St Peter and Paul’s Church. Members can also post to the club’s Facebook group page if they want to make their own running arrangement with other members.
