In the blink of an eye Summer 2016 has officially ended. We might get an Indian Summer yet, but don’t hold your breath. Green Flag award for Ardgillan Demesne

Ardgillan Demesne was one of the 22 parks nationally that recently celebrated winning an award for excellence. Ardgillan was awarded ‘Green Flag’ status in the An Taisce Green Flag awards. The demesne is situated in North County Dublin on an elevated coastline between Balbriggan and Skerries, 32 kilometres north of Dublin City. The park consists of 194 acres of rolling open grassland, mixed woodland and gardens, overlooking the Irish Sea with views of the Mourne Mountains in County Down. The awards are given to public parks and green spaces that exemplify excellence in standards such as management, sustainability and conservation as well as visitor facilities. They promote high horticultural and environmental standards and a benchmark for excellence in park management based on acknowledged international best practice. Ardgillan was one of 11 parks in the Dublin area to be awarded this status. The Demesne is managed and operated by Fingal County Council with Dominica McKevitt as the Head Gardener overseeing the day-to-day running of the park. Dominica has been in this position since Ardgillan opened as a public park in 1985 and has relished seeing the gardens grow. Ardgillan was complimented on its standards in the gardens, with the herbaceous border noted as being the ‘highlight of the visit’. It was recognised as being ‘a very fine park, well maintained park in a wonderful setting with an excellent standard of horticulture’. Dominica was delighted to accept the award on behalf of Fingal County Council and her team at Ardgillan. Gemma Carr, Senior Executive Parks Superintendent (Fingal), said: 4

“Our parklands are a wonderful amenity for visitors and citizens alike, and a highlight of our tourism offering in Fingal. “We are delighted to receive these awards, which give recognition to the ongoing work we do to ensure that Fingal remains a place that people want to visit and enjoy.” Minister of State for the Office of Public Works (OPW), Sean Canney, said: “The awards provide an important benchmark for parks to uphold standards of excellence. “Ireland’s wealth of stunning parks is a testament to the hard work and dedication of staff who work there.” The award scheme which is already established in more than 50 countries was trialled in a limited number of parks in 2015. New plan aims to boost Balbriggan economy

Fingal County Council, in conjunction with Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce and local councillors, has launched a plan aimed at boosting the local economy. ‘Stimulating the Balbriggan Economy’ will comprise short-term initiatives and medium term proposals aimed at reinvigorating the town centre, promoting tourism and fostering long-term prosperity. The first element of the plan is a pilot initiative, the Balbriggan Town

Shop Front Enhancement Grant Scheme 2016. This will involve providing advice and financial assistance to business owners to improve shop fronts and commercial properties on Balbriggan Main Street. Grant funding of up to 75 per cent of eligible costs is available to replace and renovate shop fronts or to paint shop fronts in the town centre. Over the past few weeks, the council sought expressions of interest from owners, leaseholders or tenants of commercial properties in designated locations in Balbriggan Town Centre who wish to avail of the scheme. Those interested in participating had to apply before August 26. Local councillors Cllr Tony Murphy (Ind), Grainne Maguire (Ind) and Malachy Quinn (SF) in a joint statement, said: “We welcome this Shop Front Enhancement Grant Scheme which has the scope to greatly improve the streetscape in Balbriggan and we will be promoting this among local businesses to maximise the positive potential of the scheme. “We look forward to working with Fingal County Council, Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce and local community groups in relation to the longer term aims of the action plan, with a view to delivering Balbriggan’s economic potential.” Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid welcomed the plan. Mr Reid said the actions are designed to give a short-term boost to local economic prospects in Balbriggan and establish the conditions for longerterm growth. “Balbriggan has the potential to be a vibrant and dynamic commercial hub and this plan, with the enthusiastic help of Balbriggan Chamber and councillors, aims to maximise this potential,” he said. Ed Hearne, Director of Economic Enterprise and Tourism Development with Fingal County Council, said: “The expression of interest will provide us with the information that will help us match the level of interest in this pilot initiative with the level of financial resources the council is making available.”

cemented with a draw between the clubs. Men and women both young and old togged out to take on their rivals, with both teams playing some of their junior members. International players on both sides offered spectators a chance to see players at the top of their game. Max Sorenson and Ciara Metcalfe from The Hills CC took on Muhammad Furrukh from Balbriggan CC. Visitors to the demesne were given a chance to experience cricket in a historical setting with all members wearing their whites for the occasion. Mayor of Fingal Cllr Darragh Butler started the festivities by bowling the first ball. Paul Smyth, chairperson of The Hills CC, who captained his side on the day, thanked the castle for organising the event which helped to promote cricket in the north county. Albert Harper, captain of the Balbriggan team, welcomed the event and called on the castle and council to promote cricket more in the area, with the hopes that the clubs can return next year to ‘Battle for the Castle’ once again. THERE’S nothing like mixing sport with a bit of history. That was certainly the case recently in North County Dublin when an event was held at Ardgillan Castle to commemorate a cricket match that took place at the demesne in the 19th century. On August 14, Ardgillan Castle hosted a cricket match between two local clubs, Balbriggan and The Hills. This event was organised to commemorate a cricket match that was held at Ardgillan in August 1829, between Ardgillan Castle and Kenure House. This historical match was the first reference to cricket being played in the north county and one of the first references to the sport being played in Ireland. In honour of the 1829 match, the two clubs held a ‘friendly’ on the lawn in the demesne overlooking the castle and the sea beyond. The weather was on their side and offered spectacular views for those in attendance. Both teams played a great game, with the spirit of the event being 6

Guide dog enhances Andrew’s independence Jade McCormack and Andrew Green with their guide dogs Nico and Yanni.

Andrew Green was born in September 1984 and grew up in Malahide with his parents and sister before moving to Balbriggan in 2015. Despite being blind he enjoyed a happy and peaceful childhood. He attended St Joseph’s School for the Blind, Drumcondra, and later attended Rosmini Community School where he completed his Leaving Certificate. Andrew went on to study music at Maynooth University and now sings and play the whistle full time. Passionate about music, he is a member of Fuaimlaoi, a choir based in Dublin’s Clarendon Street. At 18, while still in school Andrew decided to apply for a guide dog. However, after being assessed he decided along with the guide dog mobility instructor (GDMI) who assessed him, that it was not practical for him at that time to take responsibility for a dog. He continued using the long cane (white stick) which was his mobility aid from birth as he never was able to see. In 2012 Andrew met his now fiancee Jade who is also a guide dog owner. She has a black Labrador called Yanni. Getting to know Jade and Yanni he quickly realised that having a guide dog would enhance his independence greatly. “When we decided to find a place of our own I felt the time had come for me to take my application out of abeyance and finally get re-

assessed for a guide dog,” says Andrew. Finally in November 2014 he trained with his first guide dog Nico, a black lab-retriever cross. Then he moved to a house in Balbriggan and linked in with the local Balbriggan/North County Dublin fundraising and awareness branch of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. Over the year in Balbriggan, Andrew has become very active with the local branch of guide dogs, doing school talks, and saying those very important words “thank you” to people who have done fundraisers and supported those fundraisers. Andrew says he has three loves in his life: singing-music, his partner Jade and his guide dog Nico. In which order we can’t say but ask him if you meet him around the town. Also go to Balbriggan Parish Church any Sunday to hear Andrew sing as part of the senior choir at the 9.30am mass. The highlight of Andrew’s singing career in Balbriggan came when he was described as the fourth Tenor on the night the Celtic Tenors sang at St Peter and Paul Church. Andrew always has an accompanist with him when he sings at funerals and weddings and is open to requests for his singing abilities. Phoenix take international stage by storm

Showing guts and determination local athletes Edel Cooke and Nicole McHugh, from Phoenix Baton Twirlers packed their bags recently to represent Ireland at the European Club Championships in France. After months of meticulous intensive training and years of hard work the girls were ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in Europe. With beating hearts and batons in hand, Ireland took to the floor, the silence in the crowd adding to the tension of the moment, For the next three minutes and 30 seconds Ireland would take the crowd on an emotional rollercoaster bringing them on a journey of highs and lows, pulling on their heart strings with beautifully timed catches, tricks and formations, culminating in a mix of walk overs and juggles

till they had the crowd standing on their feet, clapping in unison for our athletes. It was a tight battle with Ireland lying fifth after the semis ahead of Germany but behind our nemesis England, could we beat them in the final? Then the whisper from judge’s review suggested there was a change about to be announced. Ireland would move to fourth ahead of the England. The Irish camp went wild. So finals fast approached and the nerves began to show, batons slipped from once secure hands and tempers began to flare. But as heads began to bow and self-doubt began to creep in, team spirit grew. The squad pulled together, the glances of reassurance to each other, the nod of confidence in warm up, “we are in this together, and nothing is going to stop us”. The heads came up, the shoulders brought back, Ireland stood tall to show

itself on the international stage. Thirty-eight athletes started this journey, five clubs from across Ireland shared this vision. Twenty-eight athletes made it to the European Cup. The biggest squad Ireland has ever sent and boy did they do us proud. There were 16 finalists, four semi-finalists and a show of strength from the remainder of the squad which made the Twirling world sit up and take note. Ardgillan Castle held a very successful Victorian Style Afternoon recently. The event included a costume workshop, where participants learned about the change in fashion from the 1800s up until the time of the Rising in Ireland. They were also invited to try on period costumes and experience what is was like to dress like women at the time. Laura Thorp, a professional costumer, delivered this fascinating talk, all while dressed in early bustle outfit dating from the 1870s. Laura enthralled the group with tales of how ladies’ fashion had dramatically changed over time, from the simple regency dress right up to the bustle, which may well be the inspiration for the large derriere look so often modelled on social media these days. The workshop was followed by afternoon tea in the exquisite drawing room at Ardgillan Castle. This beautiful room harks back to a time when Ardgillan was a social hub, with the Taylors entertaining in the very same room in the Victorian era. To round off an enjoyable day participants were brought on a guided tour of the castle where they were enthralled with stories of life in a ‘Big House’. This was one of the many engaging events in Ardgillan’s 2016 event calendar. Coming up over the next few months are a Storytelling Afternoon and Living History Day for Heritage Week. Lights, cameras, action for Remember Us

A Balbriggan-based social group for young people and adults with special needs is set to appear on RTE’s Nationwide. There was great excitement in the area when the cameras rolled into town. Members of the group became film stars for the day, while Nora and Jean and their families were interviewed for the programme. Separately, Remember Us have launched a campaign to get their new space at Balbriggan Retail Park fitted out. Their members’ slogan is: ‘PLEASE HELP US TO MAKE THIS SPACE OUR HOME. WE NEED YOUR CASH TO MAKE THIS DREAM REAL’ As the building is shell and core Remember Us have to start from scratch with work including plumbing, heating and extending the mezzanine. The group have a mammoth task ahead but with the sheer passion, determination and drive of the members and the support of everyone in the community, this dream will happen. Balbriggan group attends World Youth Day in Krakow

A group of 19 young people and leaders from Balbriggan and Skerries Parishes recently attended World Youth Day (WYD) in Krakow, Poland. It was the first time ever that youths from the parish took part in the international Catholic event which is focused on faith and youth. Every day was jam-packed with activities such as Catechesis/teaching with other young people from Ireland; visiting some of the historic sites of Krakow; an opening Mass and the Stations of the Cross in Blonia Park; a pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Divine Mercy; and of course, getting to see Pope Francis. The group was also given the opportunity to pay a solemn visit to Auschwitz. The highlight of the week was a hike to Camp Misericordia, some 18km from Krakow, (along with 1.5 million other

people!) where there was an Evening Vigil with Pope Francis followed by a night of sleeping out under the stars. The pilgrimage was hugely enjoyed by the whole group. It was fabulous to meet other young people from all over the world and to experience a young and vibrant Church. Prayer and formal ceremonies were complemented by plenty of fun and time to relax and explore the city. The young people represented their parishes brilliantly, and their joy and enthusiasm was infectious. A good measure of the week is that they all want to go to the next World Youth Day in Panama 2019. Those involved in organising the trip would like to thank all those who sponsored and supported them, and made it possible for them to go to World Youth Day, which was the third WYD held in Central Europe. A big fundaising drive took place locally in order to fund the trip. The events included a Celtic Tenors concert at St Peter and Paul Church, Balbriggan in April. The first World Youth Day took place in Rome in 1984. Over 300,000 people from around the world responded to an invitation from the late John Paul 11 to attend an international Jubilee of youth on Palm Sunday in St Peterâ€™s Square. Since that inaugural event, World Youth Day has been celebrated by over 26 million young people.

Tesco, M&S, Heatons and Mothercare all have great ones. Make sure to buy it a little big, so your child gets the whole year out of it. Schoolbags – Pulse and Dealz have schoolbags from €5-15. The ones in Pulse are colourful and ideal for girls and Dealz has character ones from €5. Make sure the bag is big enough to fit the lunchbox and books your child needs and also, make sure the straps are sturdy and not likely to break or open easily. Give it a good tug before you buy, to be sure! Headlice - is a big problem for all schools and usually, within a week or two of school starting back, there is an outbreak. Boots has a brilliant product called ‘Nitty Gritty’ that you spray on your child’s head each morning before school and it repels headlice. Since we started using it 2 years ago, we have had no outbreaks at all. One bottle will last most of the school year and this is definitely one item we would highly highly recommend! Lunchboxes – These can be expensive but if you shop around, you can get good ones for around €10. It’s important to make sure your child can open their lunchbox because if it is too hard to open, the teacher may need to help them and that’s not very nice for the child or teacher. A good tip is to bring your child when buying it to make sure its big enough and that they can open it.

New wastewater pumping station to be built There was some good news locally when Irish Water announced that it is to build a new wastewater pumping station in Skerries. The station, which will cost €5.1 million, will aim to replace the old water treatment plant in Loughshinny. The project involves the decommissioning and removal of the existing foul and storm water pumping stations and construction of the new Rush Road Pumping Station and gravity sewers. The pumping station will be located at Holmpatrick on the Rush Road in Skerries, and the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) to acquire the necessary land has been confirmed. Construction is expected to commence in March 2017 and take 18 months to complete. Dublin Fingal Senator Dr James Reilly (FG) is among the public represenatives who have welcomed

the announcement. “This is great news for Skerries, Loughshinny and all the surrounding areas,” he said. “It will make our beaches cleaner and safer as well as support future development. “The new pumping station and sewers will greatly increase the capacity of the waste network and will reduce overflows into the sea after heavy rain. “It is also future-proofed, meaning that it is designed to cope with a growing population.’ “Having worked hard to secure funding to upgrade the wastewater infrastructure in Rush, I’m delighted to see that there is funding amounting to €9.7 million to address the issue.” Senator Reilly added: “These works will permanently stop the discharge of all untreated sewage in the Rush area that has been ongoing for decades.”

Guide Dogs’ annual Church Gate Collection

The annual Balbriggan/North County Dublin church gate and public places collection for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind will take place on the weekend of Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 16, 17 and 18, The collection will take place outside all churches and other public places throughout North County Dublin including, Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush, Lusk, Balscadden, Oldtown-Rolestown, Garristown-Ballamadun, Naul, Damastown, Ballyboughal and the Bingo in Balbriggan. The Garda permit covers 8pm Friday night to 12 o’clock Sunday. Heritage Week a big success in Balbriggan

On Sunday, August 21 at 7.30pm, despite the steely skies and persistent drizzle, a crowd of more than 60 people gathered for the Real Balbriggan Heritage Walk organised by Balbriggan Tourism as part of National Heritage Week 2016. The guided walk, led by the very knowledgeable local historian Dr David Sorensen, was organised in conjunction with a permanent heritage trail which is currently in preparation and will consist of six large display boards placed at key locations in Balbriggan to illustrate the town’s rich history. Two large-scale story-board banners, specially commissioned by Balbriggan Tourism for Heritage Week 2016, have been placed on the railing of St Peter & Paul’s Church in Balbriggan in celebration of the renowned Irish artist Harry Clarke whose stained glass adorns the Church. Balbriggan is very fortunate to be the location of such magnificent artwork executed by Clarke at the height of his career. New Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé on route Proof of Mercedes-Benz’s determination to overtake its rivals and increase its global presence is seen in the launch of yet another new model – this time a coupé-styled version of their all-new GLC, the mid-size SUV that launched in Ireland last December. Not due here until early September, the new GLC Coupé (pictured) opens up more new ground for Mercedes-Benz, taking its place alongside the GLC – their first ever mid-range SUV in right-hand drive– whilst expanding the portfolio of models built on the C-Class platform - namely the C-Class saloon, estate, coupé and cabriolet. Following a route already taken by the GLE Coupé – introduced as a sporty edition of the new GLE, the new CLC Coupé is said by Ciaran Allen, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars in Ireland, to be a “niche model that will appeal to those seeking an even more sporty version of the GLC itself ”. From reaction received from dealers, Allen expects it to capture the interest “of those who rate style just as highly as substance”. Just a few short centimetres longer and lower than the GLC, the new Coupé is strikingly similar to it in terms of its outer appearance, save for its sloping roofline, short rear overhang and

single-louvre grille with star inset and sparkling diamond-finished backing panel. A discreetlypositioned rear underguard reflects its SUV heritage. Aerodynamically, the new Coupé leads its segment with a 0.31 Cd value. Putting it amongst the best-in-class also - whilst helping to restrict fuel consumption - is a body weight of just 1,710kgs, made possible through an intelligent use of aluminium and a mix of high to ultra-high strength steels. Inside, passenger space is on a par with the GLC with entrance height, shoulder, elbow

and legroom all identical. Another segmentleading feature is its load compartment which is extendable from 491 to 1400 litres. Though price, range and specifications relating to models sold in Ireland have yet to be ‘locked and loaded’, it is likely that the new Coupe will launch with a price tag circa €60,000. The new Coupé will be manufactured by Mercedes-Benz in eight engine variants - 4 petrol and 4 diesels - all EU6 emissions standards compliant. Of these, the GLC 200d Coupe and GLC 220d Coupe will be most suited to the Irish market.

4 tablespoons Oats 4 tablespoons Milk (Dairy/Coconut/Almond/ Hazelnut Milk etc!) 4 tablespoons Natural Yogurt (Could use Strained/Greek style yogurt for more protein!) -1 tablespoon milled Chia Seeds (For Omega 3, Fibre, Protein!)

1.Layer the Basic Ingredients in a container with Oats and Chia Seeds first, followed by milk, then yogurt. 2.Continue with these layers and mix in your favourite ingredients to make it “OOOAT” SO GOOD!!! (For OATALICIOUS IDEAS see the blog on: www.biabites.net) 3.Leave overnight or for at least 3 hours to allow the oats to soften. If you DO NOT want the Fruit/Other Crunchy Toppings to go soggy, then DON’T soak them overnight and just have them ready to add in right before YOU DIVE IN!! Here is just some nutritional info about a versatile, inexpensive and staple food like oats: Oats are a basic kitchen staple BUT NOWHERE near basic when it comes to their Nutritional Value and the “Oatalicious” things you can make with them! Oats contain OODLES of a special fibre called Beta-Glucan. They also contain low GI wholegrain Carbohydrates for healthy hearts, digestion, weight management and energy levels. Some research suggests that 3g or more of Beta-Glucan per day can lower LDL and total cholesterol and this can be achieved by having 2-4 portions of oat based products e.g. breakfast cereals, breads and crackers every day. In clinical trials a 5% total and LDL cholesterol lowering effect was seen within 4 weeks in those who consumed more oat based foods. Overnight Oats are a quick, easy and versatile way to include oats in your diet. Soaking the oats in liquid overnight softens them which means NO cooking and NO hassle early in the morning!
