The Ireland team did us proud at the European Championships in France but now we’re deep into the GAA season and the big crowds are flocking to Croke Park to see who will lift the Sam Maguire Cup. And speaking of big numbers, we learned something recently that we suspected for a long time. According to the Census figures, Fingal is officially the fastest growing county in Ireland with a population of more than 296,000. In the latest issue of Balbriggan Local we will have reaction to that story, as well as keeping you up to date with what else is going on in your area, including articles and photos on local community events and success stories. Remember Us members enjoy summer camps

The Remember Us Special Needs charity summer camp is up and running and members are busy. The Balbriggan-based group is running a six-week camp (four days and one night per week). As you will see from the activities/outings they will be up and down the country and also local. Some of the trips organised include Clara Lara, Newbridge Farm, high jinks at Victorian Escapades in Mullingar, Sonartie Nature Day, Laytown, Activity Nation (wall climbing, archery, glass sledging, team games) in Ardgillan and Causeys Experience (outside Kells). Over 150 members are participating in the camp, some opting to participate every day for the six weeks and others choosing the days they are available. The summer months can be long for a young person with a disability and their families but Remember Us fills those long days for them. No matter what the disability, all are welcome to take part in the events in a safe and secure environment. Remember us provides a unique club for its members and their families across North County Dublin. Families say it is a “lifeline” for them as a family. Members aged 4 to 12 have their parent carer assist them on the camp, teenage and adult members are assisted by the group’s amazing volunteers. Remember Us would like to say a big thank you to the volunteers for giving up so much of their time to support its members; and also its CE and Tus Placements Matt, Eoghan, Martina and Igor. Without the volunteers and CE/TUS they would not be able to run the events. Remember us is very family orientated. Siblings are welcome to attend and the parents that have attended so far are really enjoying the days out. Guide Dogs’ branch meet the President President Higgins invited the Balbriggan/ North County Dublin Branch of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind to a Community Garden party in Aras an Uachtarain to mark 30 years’ local fundraising by branch members. The event was held at the same time Ireland were playing France in the Euros. Large screens were set up for everyone to enjoy the game which they did except for the result! However, the group was privileged to be in the presence of President Higgins and his wife Sabina as the Boys in Green tried so hard to beat the French. The branch members enjoyed beautiful food and wine throughout the match and afterwards. President Higgins was the first politician ever to attend a formal Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind function, at a conference organised in Galway in the late ‘70s so it was really special for Tom and Breege O’Neill to renew that link as they both had attended that conference. President Higgins has two beautiful Burmese

Exam, Scale, Polish & X-Rays Cooking up a treat! The vegetables being delivered to Balbriggan Meals on Wheels by the Parents’ Association at Balbriggan Educate Together National School.

The Parents’ Association at Balbriggan Educate Together National School facilitated a Vegetable Collection for Balbriggan Meals on Wheels recently. As part of the school’s Get Active Week, with a focus on the importance of healthy eating, each child brought in a vegetable or some vegetables. Members of the Parents’ Association collected the vegetables and took them to Meals on Wheels where they were prepped for meals that the organisation distributes on a daily basis in the local area. The vegetables collected contributed to a fantastic 260 meals. Balbriggan Meals on Wheels serves 6 BALBRIGGAN LOCAL-AUGUST

80 meals daily in an area covering Balbriggan, Man O’ War and Balscadden, together with a dinner club on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. They also cook the meals for the Balbriggan Alzheimer Day Care Centre. The first meals were delivered 40 years ago in January 1976. This excellent community service is for people who, for one reason or another, are unable to cook for themselves. The food is freshly prepared and cooked in the purpose built kitchen in the Parish Centre on Hampton Street.

Phoenix perform very well in Dublin Open

Phoenix Baton Twirlers recently attended the Dublin Open competition which was hosted by Northern Star Twirlers in association with the Baton Twirling Sports Association of Ireland (BTSAI). Phoenix entered 15 athletes into the competition, ranging in ages from four years to 34 years with all athletes returning home with silverware.  The competition consisted of eight Twirling Clubs including Phoenix

Baton Twirlers with the other seven clubs considerably larger in comparison.  The girls have worked very hard over the last number of months and did themselves, the coaches and the club extremely proud. Phoenix Baton Twirlers is a relatively new club, having only been established in 2014 and will be sending athletes to the European Championships in both individual and team events. This year France is hosting the Europeans, just as in football, and the atmosphere will be electric. France is fast becoming the epicentre of the twirling world with the 5,000 seater stadium already sold out. “It will be such a great experience for our athletes to compete in front of such a large audience,” said head coach, Auveen Lynch. There are 17 countries travelling to France, with Ireland sending 30 athletes from six different clubs. Phoenix is a member of the BTSAI Baton Twirling Sport Association of Ireland, the governing body of the sport, and sanctioned by the Irish Sports Council. All coaches are Garda vetted through the Irish Sports Council, and FETEC qualified. If you want to do something different and like a challenge, Phoenix Baton Twirlers train on Mondays from 5pm-7pm and Thursdays from 6pm-8pm in O’Raghallaighs, Drogheda, and Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5.30pm7pm, in Gormanston College. Kids’ activities for the summer holidays By Siobhan White With another There is plenty for the children month of summer to do in the summer. school holidays ahead, we thought you might like some ideas for activities to do with the little ones, especially free activities because summer time can get very expensive with days out and endless trips to the shops! Painting seashells: This may sound really simple but it’s actually brilliant. We take some paper cups to beach and get the kids to fill them up with shells. We then get the children to wash and dry the shells at home in the garden (unless it’s raining and then we come inside and lay down newspaper). And then comes the fun part of painting them. We encourage designs, like ladybird colours or Ireland flag colours etc. so it takes them ages to paint them. Once done, we put in a colourful glass and either pop in the bathroom for decoration or give to a relative as a gift. The Grannies love it! Garden games: We set them up in the garden with games like swingball, bowls, egg and spoon. This entertains them for a good while on a warm day. We love getting them to do Simon says and they each get a turn at being Simon. Baking/cooking: We sent our children on a kids’ cookery course at Jill’s Kitchen last summer and since then, they have much more interest in cooking so we let them help chop and peel veg for dinner. Kids love to be involved so let them help – it will give them skills for when they’re older as

well! On a rainy day, baking a batch of cupcakes is a great way to entertain them cheaply. They can all get involved in mixing and spooning the cakes. And then, give them icing and decorations and let them get creative with the toppings. Treasure hunt: We set up a treasure hunt in the back garden (or if it’s raining, in the house). Getting them to read clues and figuring them out is great fun. Movie night: We get the kids to help make popcorn and we do ‘family movie night’. We’ve been watching classics like ET, Goonies, Dumb & Dumber and the kids love that. Cleaning: Yep, I get my children to help clean the car and wash the windows and vacuum the house. This is how they earn pocket money and you’ll find, they don’t mind as much if they know they’re getting something from it! Vegetable patch: We get the kids to help us plant flowers in the garden. They love to have taken part in planting something when watching it grow. We are planning a veggie patch soon too – this should take up lots of time. Hairdressing: With three daughters, there is a lot of hairdressing in our house. The girls do each other’s hair and my hair and sometimes their Daddy’s hair! It’s good for rainy days. There are loads of days out that you need to pay for but we would say, watch out for competitions and special offers in the newspapers etc. Also, Tesco clubcard vouchers are great for getting discounts on days out with children. Rush hour at library for children’s author

SP McArdle, author of ‘The Red Letter Day’

An award-winning journalist and travel writer who has turned over a new leaf writing magic history adventures is coming to Rush Library on August 4 at 3pm. SP McArdle’s quirky book, ‘The Red-Letter Day’, which features a 1916 finale – is already getting lots of praise, including from the Sunday Independent’s literary editor, Madeleine Keane. ‘The Red-Letter Day’ will thoroughly entertain boys and girls aged eight to 12 as it races from 9th century Book of Kells times to a rousing GPO finale on Proclamation Day in April 1916. After stepping into a magic suitcase to kickstart her adventure, heroine Jenny must find two mysterious souvenirs – and touch a ‘freedom document’ from history in order to get home again. But how will she do it? During the quest there’s non-action across the centuries as Jenny and her witty wordsmith guide O’Flahertie get chased by a giant, spy on a crazy writers’ debate and land in a gaol, before finding themselves slap-gang in the Easter Rising. At Rush Library author SP McArdle will read from her new book and answer writing questions. She’ll also launch a book’s colouring competition with a unique prize. SP McArdle, who visited Balbriggan Library on July 13 for a reading of her book, was brought up in Northern Ireland and now lives in Dublin. She has over 20 years’ experience in newspapers (writing and production) and has been a travel writer for over a decade. She has reviewed books for national newspapers since 2001 and was Literary Editor of the Evening Herald from 2001-2005. She also pens short stories and poems, and currently has a play under consideration by RTE Radio Drama. Madeleine Keane, Literary Editor at the Sunday Independent, described the book as ‘An energetic, engaging romp through key events of Irish history in the company of some of our illustrious, fascinating forebears. Fingal is Ireland’s fastest growing county

If you live Fingal, you’re not alone. In fact, there are nearly 300,000 of us residing in this beautiful county of ours. The preliminary results from the 2016 Census, show that Fingal has a population of 296,214, an increase of 22,223 since 2011. Fingal is Ireland’s fastest growing county with a 94 per cent growth in the population in 25 years. The county has seen its population grow by 8.1 per cent in the last five years. It has almost doubled in the past 25 years, rising from 152,766 in 1991 to 296,214 in 2016. The population is made up of 145,209 males and 151,005 females. Fingal is the second largest of the four Dublin Local Authorities and Fingal County Council has the third biggest local authority catchment area in the country. Fingal also contains four of the fastest growing electoral divisions in the State (BlanchardstownBlakestown, The Ward, Balbriggan Rural and Blanchardstown-Abbotstown) with growth rates of up to 27.4 per cent. The Central Statistics Office (CSO) report also shows that Fingal has the second lowest vacancy rate in the State, with a 19 per cent reduction in the number of vacant dwellings since 2011. Reid said the figures present both a challenge and an opportunity to Fingal. “Fingal County Council has been planning on the basis of similar population projections and we are currently in the middle of the review of our County Development Plan 2017-2023 which will provide a framework for the development of the county and its population in the medium-term. “However, what the census figures do indicate is the need for sustained investment in our public services, such as transport, schools and other infrastructure to support a significant and rapid increase in our population.” Mr Reid said Fingal County Council is actively supporting economic development in the county. “There are three elements to our approach,” he said. “We support the county’s SMEs through our Local Enterprise Office. We’re working to support our indigenous companies, such as in the agri-food sector and we work with others to attract multi-national industries to the county. “With its young, well-educated and expanding population, Fingal has the potential to increase its share of such investment and to be further seen as an attractive location for business to invest.”

Mr Reid added: “We very much see the figures as a positive for the long-term economic wellbeing of the county.” Mayor of Fingal Cllr Darragh Butler said the increased population figures demonstrate the attractiveness of Fingal on many different levels and as a council. “We will be doing everything we can to ensure that it continues to be the best place to live, to raise a family, to work in, to do business in and to visit,” he said. “We will also be working to ensure the delivery of major infrastructure projects such as Metro North in order to cater for the needs of our growing population.” Fingal County Council will be further analysing the preliminary data from the CSO and its potential implications for future Council policies. It will also be working with all public service providers to ensure that the county’s infrastructure and provision of essential services meets the needs of such a population. Fingal has one of the youngest and most diverse populations in the State. There is a great mix of rural and urban communities, with 53 per cent of the county zoned for agricultural use. A Balbriggan company will be showcasing its products at this year’s National Ploughing Championships. Celtic Gent, based at Unit 3 Balbriggan Business Park, specialises in tailoring Irish Heritage tweed clothing. The company takes its inspiration from Ireland’s rich history and traditions, its poetry and legends. Celtic Gent provides contemporary new designs, while honouring Irish heritage, to bring new, unique products to the marketplace. Giftcentre of Swords with their Online Gift shop featuring Irish handcrafted products, and Periwinkle Design of Malahide with their hand crafted jewellery, are two other local businesses that will be showcsing their products at the event in Tullamore in September. They are being supported by the Fingal Local Enterprise Office (LEO). A total of €645,000 worth of sales was generated by small businesses at the ploughing championships last year, with the help of the Local Enterprise Offices including Fingal. Fingal LEO and Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’ Connor, recently unveiled plans for the ‘Local Enterprise Village’, which will be home to 84 small businesses from around the country for the three days of the National Ploughing Championships. Managed and funded by the Local Enterprise Offices, the Local Enterprise Village will open its doors from September 20 to 22 in the County Offaly town. The event will be offering Irish start-ups and small businesses, including Celtic Gent, a launch-pad for new products and services, giving them the chance to impress the 280,000 visitors expected at European’s largest outdoor event. Minister O’Connor unveiled the plans at the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation in Dublin with the help of LEOs, the National Ploughing Association, Local Authorities Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and some of the small businesses that will be re-locating to the Local Enterprise Village in September. Last year the National Ploughing Championships attracted 281,000 visitors and Minister O’Connor described it as a wonderful event. “It continues to grow in scale and importance, especially for small businesses looking to launch new products and services to a mass audience,” she said. “The Local Enterprise Village is another important initiative from the Local Enterprise Offices in partnership with local authorities, as it enables small businesses to grow sales and expand, creating more jobs across every county. “Creating jobs across the country is a key priority for me as only a strong economy supporting people at work can pay for the services needed to create a fair society.” Chief Executive of Fingal County Council Paul Reid said: “We want to welcome as many visitors as possible through the doors of the Local Enterprise Village, to support the local businesses that will be launching new products and services there. “With fashion, food, craft, homeware and gifts from all over the country under the one roof, we’re expecting record crowds this year.” More details are available through www.localenterprise and by searching #localenterprise on social media. Place crackers in a ziplock bag and crush to crumbs.

Shape approx 10-15 medium size burgers and cover on a plate in the fridge until ready to cook or shallow fry immediately at a high heat to seal on both sides for about 3-5min. Then continue to fry at a medium to low heat for a further 10min or until cooked through.

Perfect on a bun or place in an oven dish with gravy and onions, cover with tinfoil and bake in the oven for 20min at 200 degrees and serve with mash and peas for a tasty alternative. Tip: place remaining uncooked burgers in a ziplock freezer bag divided by baking or parchment paper and freeze for another night’s dinner. Just defrost the night before needed in the fridge.
