On Kaw Point Park’s Riverfront Heritage Trail, stand at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. It’s the exact place where the 1804 Lewis and Clark Expedition camped for three days. Across the river, view the panoramic Kansas City skyline. Aromas of fresh-made tortillas permeate taquerias along lively Central Avenue. KCK boasts more than 60 authentic restaurants, many are immigrant-owned and staffed by primarily Spanish-speaking employees. Be sure to catch the annual “Flavors of Central Tour” in June.

Strawberry Hill has always been a place of arrival. Historically and today, it’s been a landing spot for immigrants and families building new lives. That history lives in its churches, homes, and gathering spaces-including my studio which was a former Russian Orthodox Church (reinvented as my home and circus training center). Cha Vang is an immigrant who works a regular second shift job as a machine operator. After having his third child in 2001, he started a business as a hobby and it turned into a small family business. The business was named after his first child, “Chenou Produce” as a floral vendor. Ever since then, when spring to mid-autumn came, the weekdays consist of tending to the garden and going to work right after. On the early morning weekends, he would vendor at local events with his family to set up the stalls and get ready for the day. Even while working a second shift job, Cha Vang was able to build something meaningful for his family through hard work and dedication.
