e spent a few days exploring Kalamazoo, and it turned out to be one of those trips that’s just easy — easy to get around, easy to enjoy, and although we did quite a bit, it was also relaxing. The weather was warm and sunny the whole time, and downtown had a calm, welcoming feel.

Accessibility Around Town

What We Did

We started the morning grabbing coffee downtown at Factory Coffee. If you love coffee, this is a great spot. The drinks were excellent, the space was accessible, and it had that nice local vibe that makes you want to stay for another cup. Most of our time was spent exploring Kalamazoo’s museums, which turned out to be some of the most accessible and interesting we’ve seen. The Kalamazoo Valley Museum was full of interactive exhibits about the city’s history and science. Everything had wide paths, ramps, and automatic doors, so it was easy to roll through.

Our Accessible Hotel

We stayed at the Radisson Plaza Hotel & Suites right in the center of the city. The location couldn’t have been better — everything we wanted to do was within rolling distance, from museums to restaurants. The room itself was one of the most accessible we’ve stayed in. There was plenty of space to move around, a roll-in shower with a bench, and even an automatic door that opened when you scanned your key. It’s one of those little things that makes a big difference when you travel. The hotel had a restaurant and sports bar attached, so grabbing a bite or watching a game was super convenient. It made the whole trip feel a little easier — no need to go far if we wanted to relax.

We also spent some time outdoors at the Kalamazoo Nature Center. The Arboretum Trail winds through the woods and gives you a chance to see some local wildlife. It’s manageable for most wheelchairs, though it’s best to avoid visiting after heavy rain when the trail can get muddy. (Please note: Renovations for an accessible, paved path on the Habitat Haven Trail are anticipated to be completed in summer 2026). Downtown Kalamazoo itself was easy to explore. The sidewalks were wide and smooth, and most storefronts had step-free entrances. There’s also a great outdoor mall area with shops, treats, and small restaurants — perfect for a slow afternoon.

Food in Kalamazoo is casual, local, and really good. We had dinner at ROCA, which had great flavors and a relaxed atmosphere. One night we went to Burdick’s Bar & Grill, attached to the hotel, and it was the perfect place to unwind and watch a game. We also stopped by One Well Brewing Company and Bell’s Eccentric Café — both known for their craft beer and fun, friendly vibe. The patios were spacious and easy to navigate, though a little sunny in the afternoon, so shade seekers might want to visit later in the day. “The food in Kalamazoo was always really good, and the atmosphere at all of the restaurants that we went to was always really friendly and welcoming and just had a great atmosphere to be in.” - Stefanie

Getting Around

We used an accessible rental van for the trip, which made things simple. We could stay in our chairs and roll right up the ramp. Parking was easy at every stop — plenty of space and good access. Downtown is compact, so we barely needed the van most of the time. Everything from the hotel to the coffee shop to the museums was within a few blocks, which made the trip feel even more relaxed.

Kalamazoo felt like a city that just works for everyone. The pace is slow, people are friendly, and accessibility seems built into the experience rather than added on. From smooth sidewalks to step-free entrances, nothing felt out of reach. It's a place where you'll always find something — museums, nature, great food, and that welcoming Midwest charm. We left feeling recharged, comfortable, and already talking about when we might come back. 14

Bird Watching in Kalamazoo County

irding is a popular pastime for residents and visitors alike. According to the Michigan Audubon Society, one can find more than 450 bird species on Michigan’s many birding trails, state parks and recreation areas, and more. One of the best attributes of being in a Great Lakes State is that Kalamazoo offers spectacular and unique birding experiences for all four seasons. Kalamazoo’s two great outdoor attractions are also some of the best birding spots! The W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary and the Kalamazoo Nature Center are open to the public with cost of admission for entry. A bonus to visiting these attractions is that they often offer guided nature walks, introductory birding sessions, etc. For more bird-watching events and programming, check out the Audubon Society of Kalamazoo. They have been a part of the Kalamazoo community since 1945 and offer bird and nature programs as well as birding field trips to local and regional natural areas.

W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary The W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary is a unique wildlife center offering conservation-focused public programs, interpretive tours, and accessible trails that allow close views of captive and wild birds. Journey a paved, ¾-mile accessible trail to Wintergreen Lake to see hundreds of waterfowl in their natural habitat, including Trumpeter Swans, Canada Geese, and a variety of duck species. • Birds of Prey enclosures feature both rare and common raptors, including Bald Eagles, Redtailed Hawks, Eastern Screech Owls, and others • The Leslie E. Tassel upland game bird display houses threatened and endangered species from Michigan and from around the world • A Pollinator Garden uses native plants to attract hummingbirds and butterflies Kleinstuck Nature Preserve The Kalamazoo Audubon Society recommends Kleinstuck Nature Preserve for spring birding, with the peak time being late April and early May, before the trees leaf out. In 31 spring surveys, they have recorded 205 species of birds, including 38 warbler species. Bow in the Clouds Preserve Another excellent birding location in Kalamazoo that’s less well-known is Bow in the Clouds Preserve. Bow in the Clouds is a Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy preserve. This nature preserve is just outside the downtown city limits and is about 60 acres.

The highlight of this preserve is the extensive spring-fed wetlands that help protect the water quality of the City of Kalamazoo’s well fields just downstream. The wetlands are a diverse mix of sedge meadow, cattail marsh, wet meadow, shrubcarr, and swamp forest. A packed gravel loop trail leads from the parking area to a viewing platform with breathtaking views of the marsh below. A narrow dirt trail leads visitors down a slope and over a wooden bridge to a boardwalk through a large wetland from that loop. A short out-and-back trail leads from the path to a small pond attractive to waterfowl.

Kalamazoo Nature Center The Kalamazoo Nature Center includes over 1,100 acres of forest, wetland, and prairie with miles of trails. The Visitor Center is home to award-winning exhibits, with a wide variety of programs for all ages and interests. Wander these trails for various birding opportunities: • Prairie Pathway Loops Look for bluebirds and swallows at the nest boxes • Arboretum Loop Enjoy accessible pathways that lead to the Hummingbird-Butterfly Garden • Beech Maple Hike through an old-growth beechmaple forest along a stream. Markin Glen Park Located just five minutes north of Downtown Kalamazoo, Markin Glen Park has a picturesque beach perfect for families looking for a day of shallow wading. alamazoo is full of charm with its historic streets, local eats, artsy spots, and plenty of green spaces to explore. In just a weekend, you can stroll through downtown, enjoy the outdoors, and stumble upon little surprises around every corner. Here is how we spent our weekend in Kalamazoo.

Where to Stay

We stayed at The Kalamazoo House Downtown Hotel & Suites, a historic downtown building beautifully updated into a modern boutique hotel. From the moment we stepped inside, it felt cozy, welcoming, and full of positive energy, with thoughtful touches everywhere that made it feel instantly like home. Each morning, we looked forward to a fresh breakfast served by the kindest staff, making the start of our day feel extra special. Honestly, it was the most luxurious bed and breakfast experience we have ever had. The location couldn’t have been better. Right in the heart of downtown, we could easily wander through the Kalamazoo Mall, pop into local restaurants and coffee shops, or simply soak up everything the area had to offer. The perfect mix of convenience and historic charm made our stay feel truly memorable and absolutely irresistible. 42

Activities and Attractions

Downtown Kalamazoo was much bigger than we expected, and wandering through the Kalamazoo Mall was definitely a highlight. It holds a special place in history as the very first outdoor pedestrian mall in the United States and is the largest of its kind, making exploring all the shops so much fun. You can pop into Spirit of Kalamazoo for Kalamazoo merch and local souvenirs, Terrapin Worldwide Imports for unique handcrafted pieces, or the Mason Jar Plant Shop for adorable greenery, just to name a few. There are also plenty of food and drink spots nearby, making your outing on the mall relaxing and easy to enjoy. Just a short walk away, the Kalamazoo Valley Museum is free and perfect for both families and curious adults. Its interactive exhibits make it easy to feel like a kid again, learning a little while having fun. Another gem is the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, founded in 1924 and located right next to The Kalamazoo House. Even a quick visit leaves you in awe of the wide range of art, from classic masterpieces to contemporary pieces that are a joy to explore. For a little extra adventure, take a short drive to the Air Zoo Aerospace and Science Museum. This museum is full of historic aircraft, space exhibits, and interactive activities that make learning fun for all ages. We loved seeing the world's only remaining B-Model Trainer, the Lockheed SR-71 B 'Blackbird,' and experiencing the thrill of the flight simulator.

Food and Drinks We Loved

Cherri’s Chocol’Art Treat yourself to handcrafted chocolates and the famous Monster Milkshakes, which are pure indulgence and so fun to share. We also loved the affogato flight, which was an absolute delight. Matcharia Creative vegan, gluten-free, and dairyfree drinks and snacks that are delicious and full of personality. This little spot is a heaven for matcha lovers.

Nature and Outdoor Experiences

Kalamazoo is full of green spaces and trails that are perfect for stretching your legs and soaking up nature. The Kalamazoo Nature Center hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including guided butterfly walks at the Emma Pitcher Prairie. On this walk, you can get a close-up look at butterflies while learning fun facts about different species. Even outside of special events, the Nature Center offers over 15 miles of hiking trails, open fields, and a learning center to explore at your own pace, making it easy to spend a whole afternoon wandering and discovering. Another peaceful escape is the W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, which has over three miles of trails winding around Wintergreen Lake. You can stroll through a variety of habitats and spot waterfowl, raptors, and other majestic birds while enjoying the calm and quiet of the outdoors. It’s a wonderful place to slow down, take a deep breath, and feel truly connected to nature.

Events and Local Experiences

Visiting Gull Meadow Farms during the Kalamazoo Balloon Fest can be an unforgettable, fair-like experience. You can enjoy giant, colorful hot air balloons, explore family-friendly farm activities, play games, meet the animals, and sample local food. The real showstopper is the Balloon Glow at night, when the balloons light up the sky, creating a magical moment you won’t forget.

Zooroona Mediterranean Grill Taste flavors from Greece, Morocco, Egypt, and beyond for a mini culinary trip around the Mediterranean without leaving Kalamazoo. The ambience here is on another level and makes the experience extra special. Water Street Coffee Joint Pop in for a cozy coffee break or a light snack and soak up the welcoming, relaxed vibes. The greenery and homey touches make it feel like a little local hideaway. Latitude 42 Brewing Company Unwind with local craft beers in a casual, friendly space. The food and staff are amazing, making it the perfect spot to relax after a day of exploring. Bell’s Eccentric Café A world-renowned brewery and classic Kalamazoo spot for craft beer lovers. The lively atmosphere makes it a fun place for an evening out.

Kalamazoo Balloon Fest

For a musical treat, you could stop by Concerts in the Park at Bronson Park. This free seasonal series, offered from May through mid-October and presented by the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, is full of lively performances. A multitude of bands and genres take the stage, from jazz to rock to tribute acts like the Andrew Fisher Quartet’s Stevie Wonder tribute, filling the park with happy, soulful vibes and providing a perfect way to wrap up a day of exploring.

BLACK COWBOYS: AN AMERICAN STORY This traveling exhibition invites visitors to explore the lives and work of the numerous Black men, women and children — enslaved and free — who labored on ranches and participated in cattle drives from before the Civil War through the turn of the 20th century. Black Cowboys: An American Story was developed by the Witte Museum, San Antonio (WitteMuseum.org). The exhibition is presented by Bank of America and generously supported by the John L. Santikos Charitable Fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation, H-E-B and Ed Rachal Foundation.

The W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, open throughout the year, features scenic trails encircling Wintergreen Lake. The Kalamazoo Nature Center offers an array of trails that meander through diverse landscapes, including forests, wetlands, and prairies. Bow in the Clouds Preserve is home to vast, springfed wetlands. These wetlands are a vibrant tapestry of ecosystems, including sedge meadows, cattail marshes, wet meadows, shrub-carrs, and swamp forests. Towering above, the uplands feature steep slopes adorned with magnificent red, white, and black oaks. Conveniently, Bow in the Clouds Preserve is just a short drive from Downtown Kalamazoo! While visiting, consider a detour to the nearby Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery. This facility offers educational opportunities for all ages, allowing visitors to learn about various fish species, their life cycles and habitats, and the efforts undertaken to preserve Michigan's aquatic ecosystems.

Dinner (and dessert) at D’Nicio’s Parlour D’Nicio’s Parlour is a Kalamazoo staple known for its nostalgic 1950s vibe, Greek- and American-style menu, and, of course, its hand-dipped ice cream. We stopped in for dinner with some extended family so collectively, we tried quite a bit of their extensive menu. Some of the standouts included the Gyro sandwich, bacon cheeseburger, and their Detroit-style Koneys. Dessert is a must at D’Nicio’s. It’s also a big reason why this place is such a hidden gem in Kalamazoo. They have over 30 flavors of ice cream to choose from that can be served in a cone or a dish, blended into a malt or shake, or piled high with toppings in a parfait or sundae. FAMILY FAVORITE Try “The Old Fashioned Parfait” from

D’Nicio’s. Its layers of strawberries between strawberry and vanilla ice cream and topped with whipped cream and a cherry. You can’t go wrong with this one. It’s huge and absolutely shareable, but I don’t blame you if you don’t want to share.

Experience history in motion at the Gilmore Car Museum Step back in time at the Gilmore Car Museum and experience the rich history of the automobile. It is the largest auto museum in North America and displays over 400 vehicles. From the earliest horseless carriages to vintage muscle cars to some of the most stylish cars of the 21st century, you can find them all at the Gilmore Car Museum. 50

One of my favorite parts of the museum is that each display notes the cars’ original factory price. It was so much fun to talk about how much these prices have changed over the years. We also discovered cars with unique histories, including the Gnome-Mobile from the 1967 Disney movie, and a muscle car that was found in a scrap yard and restored back to its original glory. The Gilmore Car Museum hosts a number of events throughout the year including Cruise-Ins, car shows, and their popular Winter Wonderland Holiday Experience, so you can enjoy it during any season. TIP Plan at least 2-3 hours for your visit to the Gilmore Car Museum. Grab a quick lunch at the museum’s authentic 1941 Blue Moon Diner for a needed break between exploring (open seasonally) or the Pedal Car Cafe (open year-round).

Fun and games at One Well Brewing After a busy day exploring, One Well Brewing is the perfect pit stop for dinner and fun. Explore the Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery One of our favorite places to go with kids in Kalamazoo is the Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery. There are so many things to do, both indoors and outside, making it one of the best stops for family fun in Kalamazoo. Spend time in the visitor center learning about how fish hatcheries evolved in Michigan. There is a 15-minute video to watch, showing what it’s like to spend a year as a steelhead trout at the fish hatchery, a live underwater video feed of the show pond, and also several viewing aquariums. Make sure to stop by the fish hatchery’s show pond located just outside the visitor center. You can feed the fish for free and see them all up close. Fish species include chinook salmon, steelhead trout, northern pike, northern muskellunge, walleye, largemouth bass, sunfish and lake sturgeon. If you look closely, you might spot one of their two 6-foot sturgeons below - we were able to find one. If you have more time to spend, explore the nature trails and other ponds around the Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery. There are over five miles of flat trails and these are also dog (on-leash) friendly. hether you’re a die-hard winter fan or prefer to stay warm and dry, Kalamazoo has something special for you. In fact, my family and I discovered everything from exhilarating snow tubing and ice-skating adventures to peaceful nature walks and delightful, cozy dining experiences. Let me share with you some of my favorite finds for making the most of your own Kalamazoo winter adventure.

Where to Ski and Snow Tube

Embracing the Thrill When it comes to winter sports, Kalamazoo delivers. Timber Ridge and Echo Valley offer fantastic options for people who know how to ski and those who don’t - but still are up for a thrill!

Timber Ridge

Family Fun and Starry Nights Timber Ridge is a fantastic winter destination nestled in southwestern Michigan, boasting nearly 400 acres of snowy fun! Offering 15 ski runs, a tubing hill, and all the necessary rentals and shops, this place has it all. My family and I had an absolute blast snow tubing at Timber Ridge. Since they’re open late, we enjoyed tubing under the stars! What sets Timber Ridge apart are the separated tubing lanes, the handy moving sidewalk that takes you and your tube to the top of the hill (no trudging uphill!), and the cozy warming hut and fire pits where you can warm up between runs.

A Winter Wonderland Another fun spot to visit during a winter weekend getaway to Kalamazoo is Millennium Park. This park is located just a short drive from Kalamazoo in Portage. My family and I had a delightful time ice skating at Millennium Park. The atmosphere is charming, with twinkle lights, picnic tables, and a fire pit to warm up by—it’s picture-perfect for a winter evening. It’s a great place for both experienced skaters and beginners, and it definitely added a special touch to our winter adventure in Kalamazoo.

Ways to Embrace Nature During Winter

Serene Escapes Beyond the thrills, Kalamazoo offers peaceful ways to enjoy the winter landscape. The W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary and the Kalamazoo Nature Center provide beautiful settings for nature lovers.

Echo Valley

W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary

The toboggan runs at Echo Valley are a thrill, featuring an all-season sledding surface called Everslide, which ensures a fast ride even without much natural snow. You can reach speeds of up to 60 mph on the quarter-mile runs. Getting back up the hill is made easy with a tow rope and a heated walking surface.

Seeing the waterfowl, especially the Trumpeter Swans, up close was incredible. The Birds of Prey enclosure was also a highlight, and it’s clear the sanctuary staff really care about these animals. I highly recommend a visit, especially if you’re looking for a unique and educational winter activity.

A Historic Winter Park Echo Valley is another charming, historic winter park in Kalamazoo, offering a mix of tobogganing and snow tubing. It’s a fantastic spot for families and groups, with a warm and inviting atmosphere.

A Haven for Wildlife While I absolutely adore the W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary any time of year, in the winter it is a true sanctuary for both the birds and human visitors since many other animal attractions are closed throughout Michigan.

Timber Ridge

Dave’s BAR Dave’s BAR is an ideal spot for après-ski after a day at Timber Ridge, as it’s conveniently located on the way to the highway. The owners have created a welcoming atmosphere where both visitors and locals can feel at home. With a variety of drink options, Dave’s Bar ensures that everyone feels welcome and can enjoy their time. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking for a fun and laid-back experience in the Kalamazoo area. Tavern 32 Tavern 32 in Richland is a fantastic dining option that truly offers something for everyone in the family. With a diverse menu featuring classic American cuisine, a fullservice bar, and a contemporary, upscale design, it’s the perfect spot for a relaxed yet refined meal. We visited after an afternoon at Echo Valley and were delighted to find a menu with a variety of choices, from delicious wings and satisfying handhelds to fresh fish entrees.

Exploring the Trails Another peaceful place to visit is the Kalamazoo Nature Center (KNC), which has over 14 miles of trails that are open year-round. In winter, those trails transform into a haven for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. During our winter getaway to Kalamazoo, my family and I tried snowshoeing at KNC. There are trails for all levels, which is great because we were all beginners trying out our snowshoes! We chose the Arboretum Trail, which was perfect—it’s a half-mile loop near the parking lot, mostly flat, and features cool sculptures along the way. It was a good workout, and the winter scenery was beautiful.

Cozy Culinary Delights All that winter activity works up an appetite! Luckily, Kalamazoo boasts a diverse dining scene with something for everyone. Here are three recommendations of some of our favorites.

Family-Friendly Fun The Backyard of Kalamazoo is a gem for families seeking year-round entertainment and quality dining. During our winter visit, we particularly loved how family-friendly this restaurant is. The indoor playroom kept our son entertained while we enjoyed “bougie brunch” offerings and a mimosa flight. It’s a place where parents don’t have to compromise on enjoying great food and drinks just because they have kids in tow. The Backyard of Kalamazoo makes it easy to create lasting memories with the whole family in a fun, inclusive, and welcoming setting. 58
