Wimbledon Common Golf Club was founded in 1908, and we are privileged to play on a 18-hole challenging woodland course set in the heart of Wimbledon Common. The club offers a warm and friendly welcome to members and visitors.

Meet the Captains’

Men’s Captain - Andrew Copeman

As men’s captain of WCGC, I am privileged to play on a beautiful course with interestingly varied holes. The trees provide a stunning backdrop to a course that is not long, but challenging for good golfers as well as excellent for those new to the game. Three new tees have been provided to overcome the problems experienced by those who do not have the length to carry the ravines.

The course is remarkably resilient, remaining open when many are closed and this is due in no small measure to our greenkeepers who go above and beyond to keep the course playable in bad weather.

Competitive matches are held most weekends and the club enters local and national competitions.

Social rollup groups play during the week and you are sure to find partners and opponents which suit your ability.

I joined the Club in 2023 having relatively recently started playing golf in 2019 while working abroad. Living in London, I was attracted to Wimbledon Common golf club because of its beautiful Woodland course and its easy accessibility. I love that our course changes with the season and always provides a fun challenge with some narrow fairways and a couple of ravines.

I would describe our club as very friendly and inclusive. Women are made to feel very welcome and indeed make up 30% of the club’s membership. Our Ladies section is vibrant with internal, regional (Surrey) and national Ladies competitions, friendly matches (some of which combine bridge and golf) and an annual Ladies golf tour. We also have mixed golf competitions and plenty of social events. The club provides an Academy programme for players

The seniors have a vibrant membership and during the year there are many weekday internal competitions and matches against other clubs.

The clubhouse often enjoys a convivial atmosphere but, equally often, provides a haven for a quiet drink.

An important focus for our club is also the fundraising we do for charity and this year the Men’s Captain and I have chosen to support Alzheimer’s Research UK, whose vision is a world free from the fear, harm and heartbreak of dementia.

As the Lady Captain, I’m delighted to be supported by my Ladies committee and by my Lady Vice Captain, Judy Horsford. We are always available should anyone have questions or feedback.

History

The club was founded in 1908 and was initially called Wimbledon Town Golf Club. Membership was limited to 100 residents of Wimbledon, and the entrance fee and annual subscription was set at one guinea each. In 1919 Wimbledon Town Golf Club amalgamated with South London Golf Club. The name became “Wimbledon Common and South London Golf Club” and was simplified to Wimbledon Common Golf Club in 1928.

World War II was a time of great difficulty for the club. Many members left for military service, and the course was taken over by the military, making it largely unplayable. But after the war, the pre-war greenkeeper returned to his post and made repairs of wartime damage, and the clubs fortunes gradually improved.

In the 1970s, significant improvements were made to the clubhouse, which paved the way for many years of enjoyment for members both on and off the course. Lady members were admitted for the first time in 2004, just in time to help the club celebrate its centenary with a year long calendar of activities and events in 2008.

More recently, the clock tower was added to the clubhouse in 2018 at the bequest of founding lady member and four-year Captain, Karen Owen, and in 2019 we opened a new golf shop in honour of Edward Harris, recognising the life of our remarkable former Captain and three-time Chairman.

Investment has also been made with the construction of our indoor swing studio, which is home to Alex Williams our PGA Professional.

About Our Club

Our friendly and welcoming clubhouse features a comfortable bar and lounge area serving a large selection of drinks, snacks, and delicious hot dishes daily. There is also a pleasant outside eating and drinking area available in the summer months.

Putting green and practice areas

Our putting green and practice areas are located near the clubhouse. A net is available for warming up your swing; with a further practice area to the left of the second fairway.

Modern changing rooms

The clubhouse features separate men’s and women’s facilities with showers and lockers available for hire.

Golf shop

Our golf shop is stocked with soft drinks, snacks and a wide range of golf clothing, shoes and accessories.

Swing studio

The swing studio is home to Alex Williams, our PGA Professional who can tailor golf lessons for members and non members both indoors and outdoors.

Available Memberships’

Mens

We have memberships available for those who are interested in competition play and also for those who prefer to play social golf. Our Men’s section participates in monthly competitions, pairs and singles knockout events, friendly fixtures against other local clubs, mixed pairs events, regional tournaments and national competitions.

If you’re a novice without a handicap or an experienced golfer looking for a friendly club, we welcome members all year round.

Ladies

Our Ladies’ section enjoys playing golf on weekdays or weekends. We host monthly medals, pairs, and singles competitions, as well as friendlies against other local clubs. Mixed matches are also organised, along with regional and national competitions.

We have a varied social calendar that includes bridge afternoons and an annual summer tour. The latter is always popular with members who enjoy meeting new people through the game of golf.

Seniors

The WAGGS (Wimbledon Aged Gentlemen Golfers’ Society) are friendly, relaxed, and very social golfers aged 55 years plus who enjoy a game of midweek golf. There is a wide range of golf available, with informal groups playing regularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and plenty of competitive matches against other nearby clubs for those that want it.

Available Memberships’

Intermediate

Reduced rates are available for 18 to 25-year-olds and 26 to 30-year-olds who are looking to enjoy 7-day membership.

Students

We offer a discounted membership to full-time College and University students aged 25 years and under who wish to play whilst studying.

Family

Family membership includes 2 adults on a 7-day membership with 2 children aged 18 years and under included free of charge.

Juniors

Membership is available to competent Junior players aged under 18 who are looking to experience more time on the golf course. Juniors typically play with a responsible adult or with other Junior members.

Academy

The academy is aimed at those relatively new to golf and is open to both men and women.

Our PGA Professional, Alex Williams, provides academy members with both individual and group lessons over the course of 12 months within a programme that includes on-course play, as well as making use of our indoor swing studio and putting green.

About Alex Williams

Alex qualified as a PGA Professional in 2016 and joined Wimbledon Common Golf Club in March 2022.

He manages our golf shop, which is well stocked with a wide range of equipment, clothing, shoes and refreshments. He also provides a club regripping and repair service, as well as lessons to members and non-members.

Lessons

Alex has coached thousands of golfers ranging from complete beginners to Euro Pro Tour members. His passion and enthusiasm for the game make beginners and improvers feel relaxed whilst also being intense enough for lower-handicap and scratch players.

Lessons can take place on the course, putting green, or in the club’s purpose built indoor swing studio.

Paying for green fees

Book your round at your ease and convenience through our handy online booking portal, or over the phone, and pay for it in our golf shop by cash, card or contactless prior to your round.

Red tops on the course

All golfers must wear plain pillar-box red coloured tops, to make them more visible to other users of the common. We provide these for sale, or for hire in our golf shop.

We also have golf trolleys and clubs for hire.

1. Plateau

White Tees: Par 3 / 223 Yards / SI 7

Red Tees: Par 3 / 192 Yards / SI 6

A tricky opening hole that requires an accurate tee shot to find the green. Out of bounds on the left and gorse and bushes on the right.

Pro’s Tip: Anything long of the green is in serious danger, so it’s best to stay short.

2. Hope Grant

White Tees: Par 4 / 437 Yards / SI 1

Red Tees: Par 5 / 433 Yards / SI 4

A long, straight fairway with trouble on either side. The undulating green slopes from front to back.

Pro’s Tip: Aim for the middle of the green with your approach; it’s better to finish with a small number than risk making a big number.

3. Nest

White Tees: Par 4 / 282 Yards / SI 14

Red Tees: Par 4 / 250 Yards / SI 9

A medium length drive will leave you with just a short pitch to a flat green. Avoid going too long because of the trouble directly behind the green.

4. Spinney

Pro’s Tip: Right side of the fairway is favourable off the tee, as there is a tree blocking approach shots from the left.

White Tees: Par 3 /167 Yards / SI 11

Red Tees: Par 3 / 136 Yards / SI 10

A classic length Par 3 with a bowl-shaped green that can’t be seen from the tee.

Pro’s Tip: There’s more room to the left than you might think. Golfers who aim too far right risk a bogey.

5. Blockade

White Tees: Par 4 / 277 Yards / SI 18

Red Tees: Par 4 / 266 Yards / SI 15

A short Par 4, where longer hitters can reach the green from the tee.

Pro’s Tip: The lay up off the tee leaves an easy wedge shot. This green is bowl-shaped, so any approach into the heart of it leaves an uphill putt.

6. Heather

White Tees: Par 4 / 392 Yards / SI 6

Red Tees: Par 4 / 386 Yards / SI 2

This hole offers a generous fairway and a tempting approach shot. However, long, left and right of the green are trouble spots and watch out for the downslope at the front of the green.

Pro’s Tip: In summer, land your approach short of the green. In winter, land in the heart of the green.

Red Tees: Par 4 / 303 Yards / SI 8

A sharp dogleg left with a 130 yard carry over a ravine from the tee. A nice inviting green.

Pro’s Tip: There are trees on both sides, so concentrate on getting your tee shot over the ravine.

8. Elcho

White Tees: Par 3 / 219 Yards / SI 5

Red Tees: Par 4 / 219 Yards / SI 17

A long Par 3 for men, a short Par 4 for women with a tricky green that slopes from front left to back right.

Pro’s Tip: There’s plenty of space left of the green but not much to the right, so that’s definitely the side to miss it on.

9. Big Ravine

White Tees: Par 4 / 259 Yards / SI 16

Red Tees: Par 4 / 240 Yards / SI 14

A 140 yard carry over the ravine leaves a short iron for your approach, although longer hitters can go straight for the green.

Pro’s Tip: A good birdie chance. The green is bowl-shaped so anything in the heart of it should leave you with a nice uphill putt.

10. Long Butt

White Tees: Par 4 / 311 Yards / SI 12

Red Tees: Par 4 / 281 Yards / SI 11

This hole is a short Par 4, with a tree on the left to avoid off the tee.

Pro’s Tip: Keep an eye out for the rough just short of the green. Go in there, and it’s a tough up-and-down pitching out onto a down-slope.

11. Running Deer

White Tees: Par 4 / 380 Yards / SI 4

Red Tees: Par 4 / 364 Yards / SI 3

There is a large oak tree in the middle of the fairway about 200 yards from the tee. Navigate your way around this, and you’ll have a medium iron to the green.

Pro’s Tip: There is more room to the left of the oak tree than the right.

12. Queensmere

White Tees: Par 3 / 239 Yards / SI 3

Red Tees: Par 4 / 230 Yards / SI 16

The most testing Par 3 from the white tees, a Par 4 from the red tees. A long and accurate tee shot is required to keep out of trouble.

Pro’s Tip: Be careful, everything feeds from left to right as you approach the green.

13. Sand Pit

White Tees: Par 4 / 282 Yards / SI 13

Red Tees: Par 4 / 249 Yards / SI 12

A short, straight Par 4, which needs an elevated tee shot to clear the silver birches in front of the tee.

Pro’s Tip: Land your approach shot left of the flag, as the green slopes gently from left to right.

14. Paradise

White Tees: Par 4 / 385 Yards / SI 2

Red Tees: Par 4 / 384 Yards / SI 1

Our signature hole. A good tee shot leaves a medium to long iron to a green surrounded by Scots pines. A Par here is a great score.

Pro’s Tip: The hole doglegs slightly to the right, so keep your tee shot left of centre, or you’ll end up blocked out by the trees.

15. Birches

White Tees: Par 4 / 285 Yards / SI 15

Red Tees: Par 4 / 278 Yards / SI 13

A relatively short, slightly downhill Par 4, with a deceptively steep slope onto the front of a tricky green.

Pro’s Tip: Either land your approach shot short of the green and let it roll down the hill or pitch into the middle of the green to use the upslope at the back.

16. Caesar’s Well

White Tees: Par 3 / 126 Yards / SI 17

Red Tees: Par 3 / 116 Yards / SI 18

The shortest hole on the course features an interesting undulating green with a variety of difficult pin positions.

Pro’s Tip: Think twice before aiming straight at the flag, you might be better to play safe and aim for the middle of the green!

17. Caesar’s Camp

White Tees: Par 4 / 327 Yards / SI 9

Red Tees: Par 4 / 304 Yards / SI 7

A short Par 4 up the hill. A good drive will leave a comfortable iron into a flat looking green with subtle slopes.

Pro’s Tip: Most approaches are hit off the upslope, so take an extra club.

18. Long Hole

White Tees: Par 5 / 475 Yards / SI 8

Red Tees: Par 5 / 463 Yards / SI 5

The only Par 5 on the course for men. There is a road and ditch 230 yards from the tee and a steep grass bank to an elevated fairway 150 yards short of the green.

Pro’s Tip: The safest way to play the hole is to lay up short of the road and take 3 shots to the green. Bigger hitters can hit over the road to try to reach in two, but this brings lots more trouble into play and leaves a blind 2nd shot to the green.

Red top on the course

Wimbledon Common Conservators require that all players wear a plain pillarbox red outer garment when playing golf.

Trainers, t-shirts, denim jeans, and tracksuits are not acceptable when playing on the course.

Golf on the Common

During play, walkers, cyclists, and horseback riders have right-of-way over those playing golf.

Please note that Wimbledon Common Conservators require that golf ceases at 2pm on Sundays.

Nineteenth hole

Visitors are welcome to enjoy our comfortable bar and catering facilities before or after their round of golf.

In the clubhouse, you may wear smart casual clothing, or golf attire so long as it is clean and dry.

Societies

We welcome society bookings from Monday to Friday, and we can occasionally accommodate groups on Saturday afternoons as well.

We offer packages including green fees, drinks and food in our clubhouse.

Swindles

On Thursday evenings during summer, and Friday lunchtimes during winter, we hold informal roll ups open to green fee players and members.

This a great way to play 10 holes, enjoy golf on the Common, and meet other friendly, like-minded golfers.

The Lenton Room

Our clubhouse has an upstairs function room with lovely views of the Common. This is where we hold all our club lunches, dinners, and events. It seats 40 guests or holds 65 standing.

This spacious and contemporary room is available for private hire during the daytime or evening. It can be used for a variety of business meetings or social gatherings, as well as for birthdays, anniversaries and celebrations of life events.

Functions can be self-catered or catered by our kitchen team at an additional cost.
