About Us
Sussex Polo Club is located on the hills of Sussex/Surrey borders in the picturesque village of Rowfant. Within easy reach of Gatwick, just 35 miles from Central London and a 10 minute drive from junction 10 of the M23. Founded in 2002 by Duane and Sallie Anne Lent, based on the warm and welcoming estancias of Argentina, Sussex Polo Club provides onsite livery spread over 200 acres and a dedicated Argentine groom service. Sussex Polo club is the best place to make learning and playing polo affordable, fun and inclusive. Now, with two top class sanded and well drained pitches the club has established itself as the home for low goal polo in the southern countries.
SPECTATORS WELCOME Spectators are welcome for all games and afternoon finals which run most Sundays from May to September. Admission is usually free although a small fee is sometimes charged for charity tournaments (max ÂŁ10 per car) in aid of the event charity. Please note that all dogs must be kept on a lead. The cosy clubhouse with a licensed bar provides the perfect setting for celebrating with family and friends. Catering is available on-site or guests may prefer to bring their own picnics. GUIDE TO POLO
A SPECTATOR’S SIMPLIFIED GUIDE TO POLO The Rules are geared first and foremost to protect the horses from injury and, secondly, the players. The rules are also supposed to be simple! So simple that anyone can understand and interpret them. Interpretations however can vary dramatically, which is why the umpires need to be able to agree on which rule has been broken and what penalty should be given. This is why it takes two mounted umpires with very thick skins to interpret the rules and dish out the appropriate penalty, which usually consists of a free hit at the ball. You will see the umpires conferring after each suspected infraction and if not in agreement they will appeal to a ‘Third Man’ on the sidelines.
HOW LONG D OES A GAME L AST? Each game is divided into periods called ‘chukkas’, lasting seven minutes. The players will then troop off to change ponies (re-do their lipstick or put on more aftershave etc). Players must be back within three minutes. However, at half time you get five minutes which gives you the chance to do both. After each goal, the players change ends. This is very confusing if you have not been paying attention or have been in the Champagne tent too long. When the umpire blows the whistle, the clock is stopped. He blows it when a player has fouled but will play advantage first.
Sandwich
The ‘Sandwich’ is when a player and his mount are rendered incapable of moving towards the ball because they have been used as filling in a very tough sandwich by the opposing team’s ponies. If an umpire sees this happening a penalty is awarded to the sandwich-filler’s team.
Crossing the Line
DASTARDLY DEEDS AND CUNNING PL ANS The most frequent foul in polo has to be ‘Crossing the Line’. When a ball is struck it creates an imaginary line along the path that it travels, this line is regarded as the right of way of the player who last struck the ball. (Think of the white line in the middle of the road). Look out for players who shout “My line, my line! ” as whilst it could very well be their line, it could also be just a cunning plan (big lie) designed to put you off your stroke. Therefore, it is very important to know where the line of the ball actually is!
Ride OFf
The ‘Ride Off ’ is when one player is seen battling to push his opponent off the line and away from the play. (Or they could, of course, just be getting to know each other a little better by sitting on their lap.) One way to tell the difference is if you hear the scream from a team-mate of “Take the man” – that is usually a genuine ride off move in progress. ‘Take the woman’ is definitely much more Jilly Cooper!

The Hook
‘The Hook’ Players are allowed to hook an opponent’s stick if they are riding on the same side of the opponent’s pony as the ball. In my experience, and most annoyingly, this tactic (dastardly deed) is often employed just as you try to score a goal.
Umpires and Penalties
Polo does have a ‘Yellow Card’, similar to football in a way but much more interesting. Any players in earshot of the umpire heard uttering such obscenities as “Are you blind?”, “Why don’t you learn the rules?”, “Don’t ride me off you big brute, I’m modelling in the morning” are liable to be sent off the field without pity.
Handicaps
Every player has a handicap. One of the great things about polo is that it enables the completely useless to play with the truly gifted. Even if you stink you can be a winner! All you have to do is pay for a very expensive professional to shout “Leave it! ” at you very loudly whenever you get near the ball, and he then scores all the goals for you and you get to keep The Trophy. Most patrons still think this is a super deal.
Patrons
Another great thing to look forward to in polo, is if you listen very carefully, you can occasionally hear a pro (only usually in practice matches and only of course if you are paying him) say quite politely “Your ball sir” whilst lining the shot up for you right in front of the goal. This is still music to most patrons’ ears, no matter how much it cost them.
Players
The best players in the world are rated 10 and are usually Argentine and handsome. Beginners start at minus two and are never Argentine. The handicaps of each team player are added together and the side with the deficit is given the goal difference as an advantage on the scoreboard at the start of the game. This value is worked out by a special formula which most of the players are very happy to leave to the umpires to work out.
Spectators and Divots A popular tradition for spectators at half time is to ‘tread in’ the divots kicked up by the ponies during play (think “Pretty Woman”). This is very helpful to the players and ponies and an easy task if one is wearing flat shoes. However, any townies wearing stilettos can still remain in the bar without feeling embarrassed.

These famous words, which sum up what is believed to be the oldest team sport in the world, were found written near a polo pitch in Pakistan but here in West Sussex that statement is not strictly true. Tucked away on the Sussex/Surrey border a new breed of polo club designed for us mere mortals is flourishing. So if you have ever fantasised about living the dream and learning to play this noble sport read on - polo is now within your grasp! Many of our members had never ridden before they discovered polo so you don’t need to be an experienced rider to give it a try. Whilst polo is widely regarded in the UK as an elitist pastime reserved for just the privileged few, in South America it’s a populist sport played by the locals on the farms straddling the Argentine pampas. The ambiance is warmer, more inclusive and relaxed with players, grooms, ponies, kids and dogs everywhere – a real family atmosphere. No pretence, no airs and graces just pure “farm polo” at its best. In Argentina it’s not just a game, it’s a lifestyle and fourteen years 10 | SUSSEX POLO 2016
ago we took a memorable family holiday to the country regarded as polo’s heartland.The impact was overwhelming and I was seduced into recreating this polo lifestyle back home in West Sussex. Polo is so addictive you only remember the highs and develop amnesia about the lows, a key point being that whilst Argentina is warm, the UK is wet for half the year. But somehow it all seems worth trudging around in
Dubarrys all winter in order to relive the dream again each summer when the sun decides to return to Old Blighty. So from May to September we are living the dream, playing polo in the sunshine and teaching beginners of all ages how to play this magnificent adrenalin sport. Lessons are affordable and it’s much easier than you think. The expert help of three qualified instructors and easy schoolmaster ponies allow the highs from the lessons to become intoxicating! The sport has become so popular that’s it’s now possible to play year round with the latest variations on snow, sand and purpose built arenas.
Once addicted to polo the thought of spending several months without playing is not a welcome option. The results speak for themselves; our son, Terence, was one of our youngest members when he started playing at nine years old and nine years later in 2015 he was part of the team that won the British Junior Championships at Cowdray. Our oldest playing member is retired but still plays every weekend and rather well I might add! We teach Worth and Woldingham schools, host Hen parties, corporate “learn to play polo days” and sponsored charity tournaments. If you prefer to spectate rather than participate, pick a sunny Sunday afternoon and come and
watch a few chukkas. Entry is free so bring a picnic and the family. You will be made to feel welcome in true “mi casa es su casa style”. Sussex polo is a like a large extended family. We share the love of the sport and horses and spend weekends with like-minded friends. I sleep well knowing that we have enabled so many people to join in and play this exhilarating sport on an achievable budget.

Polo Glossary Polo Pony Originally, no horse higher than thirteen hands and two inches (54”) was allowed to play in a polo game. In 1895 the height was raised from 14 hands to 14.2. The height restriction was
abolished in 1919. Ponies are selected carefully for quick bursts of speed, stamina, agility and manoeuvrability and although not a recognised breed, many are throughbreds.
HELMET The only piece of equipment that is mandatory by the rules. Some players will also use a faceguard

But did you know that over 60% of people who take up polo have never even sat on a horse before?! Here at Sussex Polo, we are able to coach all levels from complete beginners to experienced riders. Lessons are fun and safe with our skilled and experienced HPA* accredited polo instructors. We provide you with well schooled easy ponies and the support that you need to feel confident from the start. Your mission is to get your pony in line with the ball and either pass it ahead to a teammate or hit the ball down the field for an attempt at goal! Our Introduction to Polo Lesson is an excellent way to experience the fascination and exhilaration of one of the fastest ball games in the world! During your introduction, you will learn how to hold the stick to hit the four shots in polo, how to ride polo-style, learn the basic rules and objectives of the game of polo and then put all your new skills together with ‘stick and ball’

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
I’m delighted but also a little surprised to have received the Player of the Year award considering I’d only previously achieved the prestige of ‘Games Played on most Hangovers’. Clearly 2015 was a slightly more sensible and sober year - but certainly not dull! Last season was a great one but it wasn’t all smooth sailing. The year started with the heart breaking loss of dear Lobuno. He was the first horse I bought for

polo, with some naivety to be honest. This 16.2 hand gentle giant wasn’t your typical ‘pony’ and many suggested hunting him instead. But he loved playing, looked after me and I sorely miss him. Writing this provides me the opportunity to thank Mario and Duane for their support, calmness and compassion when Lobuno passed away. I couldn’t have wanted my old friend to be in better hands at the end.
NICK FARNHILL Horses will never cease to challenge us and that’s what makes them so exciting, magical and addictive to be around. Reading this sentence back is somewhat a revelation for me, for up until 15 years ago I’d made every possible excuse to avoid being around horses, let alone ride them. The bug slowly took hold though after a few lessons hacking around local woods, soon followed by taking a share in another gentle giant, the oddly named Kieran – a good natured and powerful Irish Hunter perfect for galloping around in a rather out of control manner.
At this stage I was only dabbling in the game, dipping in and out every so often, but my love of horse riding was accelerating rapidly. I became fascinated with traveling on horseback and discovering countries that are nomadic and revere the horse by tradition. This led to an ambitious world record-breaking attempt racing horses across Mongolia: On 22 August 2009, twenty-four foolhardy riders, including the jockey Richard Dunwoody, and myself mounted our steeds amidst the ruins of the Great Khan’s ancient capital Kharkhorin to face a gruelling 1000km race across the empty wilderness of Mongolia. This was less a test of the horse’s speed, but more of our endurance and the toughness of the skin between our legs. In order to complete the race, each rider had the use of 25 semi-wild horses and had to navigate solo whilst surviving alone on the wild steppes of Mongolia.

Without a discipline to pursue, these happy hacks soon became dull. A brief brush with dressage failed to tempt and an abortive show jumping experience didn’t help extend my passion for riding. By chance and typical I imagine for many, a polo lesson given as a present provided the hook. Not being active in many other sports, I could only compare it to one other past time – skiing. The feeling when you jump off your horse at the end of a game, a smile from ear to ear and the knowledge that you’d probably cheated a serious injury or two is similar to that moment at the end of a long and fast day on the slopes. Plus the après experiences in both sports have a lot in common!

I
was never a big horse lover however the day when my Dad took my sister, Daisy, and I down to a nearby polo club and decided to teach us to ride everything changed. Now six years later, many ponies on and some ensuing injuries I think it was both the worst and best decision he has ever made! I started when I was 10 years old when my Dad taught my sister and I to ride. I didn’t really warm to it, I would much rather stand on the side grooming and tacking up than trotting figures of eight around my Dad trying to keep my heels down. Watching the chukkas after we had finished made me want to try, my Dad had done a little bit before and wanted to get back into it. So he arranged some lessons for the both of us with the aim of us playing one beginners tournament together. However I knew the minute I held the mallet it would not just be one tournament. Although I probably only touched the ball once during the tournament, it was the most fun and exhilarating thing I had ever done and I was not going to stop anytime soon! At the end of that season my Dad decided he would buy himself a polo pony, ‘Flo’. One month after getting her she was no longer Dad’s... she was mine! I progressed so much in my first season on her, my confidence grew I was out bossing around and elbowing the men in chukkas when I was still just 11. The next year I joined Old Surrey and Burstow Pony Club where, with the support of Viv Goode and Ed Horswell, brought me many opportunities

to progress through Pony Club for which I am grateful. Two years later, we got three more horses so my Dad and I were able to play together in tournaments. Last year I decided I needed to move on to improve which led me to Sussex Polo: The atmosphere of the club made it easy for my family to want to come down and watch me. With the support of Sallie-Anne and Duane it was my best season yet and my playing improved with the help and encouragement of Ben Sim. So to round this off I would like to say a huge thanks to everyone at Sussex Polo who helped make this season the most amazing season yet, you have all encouraged me to keep going and I will not be stopping anytime soon. Thank you to all who believed I deserved this award I am very grateful and I hope I do you proud in the future. See you next season!

rom my perspective as cofounder of Sussex polo but more importantly a parent - polo is one of the only things that could tear my then nine year old son away from his XBOX and for this alone I am eternally grateful. The rewards that have followed over the last nine years have been invaluable. Technology can’t compete with the fun, excitement and sense of achievement that polo brings to children’s lives. The world of polo also introduces them to a network of like-minded friends who are established for life. Many of today’s top English polo players who are now travelling the world playing professional polo started through the Pony Club or Schools and University Polo (SUPA) and more recently Junior HPA (JHPA).

SCHOOLS AND PONY POLO CLUB As well as teaching privately at weekends Sussex Polo Club are pleased to teach some of the top private schools in the area, namely Worth, Woldingham and Hurstpierpoint College. Thanks to the foundations planted by the OS&B Pony Club at Sussex Polo, we have also helped to produce many young champions. In 2010, a record five OS&B teams qualified for the Pony Club Championships at Cowdray. In 2011 Terence Lent & Jack Hyde were selected by the HPA to play in the International Cup in Argentina. Later in the same year Terence Lent and Harry Hickmet were selected to play for JHPA Young England and won the Stagshead Trophy. Katy Bernard was invited to Hungary by SUPA to play for the British junior
team. Hector Worsley was invited to play in China as his school won the Seniors National Championships.

Care, Compassion and Understanding St Catherine’s Hospice are delighted to be supported by Square Peg at their annual Polo Challenge. St Catherine’s are committed to giving the best possible care to patients and their families and provides specialist end of life care to local people across Sussex and Surrey. During the last year, St Catherine’s supported over 2,000 patients with 80 per cent of care provided in the comfort and familiar surroundings of patients’ own homes.
As well as practical care, the hospice also offers emotional support, welfare advice, spiritual care, occupational and physiotherapy, complementary therapies and creative activities. As part of St Catherine’s individual care approach, these services are tailored to meet the needs of each individual and the hospice recognises that, at such a challenging time, emotional support is just as important as the physical care we provide.

Looking back at the last 14 years in which I have been involved with polo, I am relieved to suggest that polo pony welfare is evolving, albeit slowly. It should never be understated how incredibly important it is that we provide the ponies in our care with the quality of life that they deserve. The 5 freedoms are a set of guidelines adopted by several professional groups including vets, the RSPCA and the World Animal Health Organisation. Let us remind ourselves of the five freedoms

Freedom from hunger or thirst - by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour. At Sussex Polo we take nutrition very seriously, with regular meetings with nutritionists and sourcing the best forage and concentrate food to suit individual ponies’ needs. Tailoring a diet specifically for each pony allows them to get the right balance of protein, energy and nutrients that they need, as the older school pony has completely different requirements to the high goal star. We have access to fabulous grazing which helps keep the ponies chilled and in as natural an environment as possible. This lowers the chance of ponies in work developing stomach ulcers, which can often be seen in up to 60% of horses in work. We do not believe in ponies having substantial periods of time without forage or the use of muzzles. Freedom from discomfort - by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting place. At Sussex we have good sized paddocks for freedom of movement and provide as much shelter and shade as possible. There are numerous stabling options for those that are sick or injured and need extra attention. Freedom from pain, injury or disease - by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment. We are fortunate to have the support of a great team of vets, regular farrier visits and a group of grooms hand-picked for their caring nature for their ponies and their knowledge on pony health and welfare. This all results in quick response to any conditions or lamenesses that may arise during the year which limits suffering. We have programs in place for regular worming, vaccinations and dentistry. Freedom to express most normal behaviour - by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind. As mentioned before our horses have access to large paddocks and kept in manageable groups to provide them with as natural a lifestyle as possible. This ultimately reduces stress and results in a happy and more productive pony. Freedom from fear and distress - by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering. In addition to the aforementioned lifestyle that we provide our ponies with, we also promote fair play on the field to prevent any unnecessary suffering and stick to the HPA guidelines for pony welfare which can be found in the HPA handbook. In addition to championing pony welfare, my other passion in polo is in breeding and producing future stars. I am delighted to be joining the existing group which are developing the team of Sussex polo ponies. I hope that my experience in breeding (under the watchful eye of my stud vet wife!!) will be able to contribute to the future development of the Sussex Polo pony team. This year we will be hoping to use Embryo Transfer to produce offspring from our very best mare. I am very happy to be joining such a close knit and happy family feel that Sussex Polo Club represents and hope to see you all on the field very soon!
