Welcome In 2025, we were proud to celebrate the 125-year anniversary of our foundation. This was a major milestone for the club and a range of well supported golf and social events for were planned throughout the year.

The Club offers a compact, challenging nine-hole course for golfers of all standards. We are situated in a quiet and leafy part of Twickenham, less than a five minute walk from Strawberry Hill railway station and with excellent access to the motorway network (M3/M25).

Whilst Strawberry Hill Golf Club is a private members’ club, we offer a warm and inclusive welcome to members and visitors alike. Set in a peaceful part of Twickenham, our historic nine-hole course provides an enjoyable and memorable golfing experience for players of all standards. The Club was founded in 1900 the course laid out under the guidance of JH Taylor, one of the pioneers of the modern game of golf. Among his achievements, he won the Open Championship five times, formed the PGA, and designed Royal Birkdale, still a regular Open venue.

The course has remained largely unchanged and still bears Taylor’s familiar hallmarks, including the small humps and hollows on several holes which look harmless and yet seem to come into

play far too often. JH Taylor would be proud of the way his nine-hole gem has withstood the test of time and it remains a testimony to his skill as a great course designer. Strawberry Hill Golf Club has received ‘Respect in Golf’ accreditation from England Golf, our national governing body. We are proud to belong to a movement that is designed to inspire and promote diversity and inclusion in golf. The Club operates SafeGolf practices and procedures to meet the expected standards of safeguarding of young people and vulnerable adults.

History In 1900, with Chiswick Golf Club under threat of being sold for development (it eventually closed in 1907), six Strawberry Hill residents who often played at Chiswick were seeking an alternative place to play golf.

JH Taylor, a five-times winner of the Open Championship who was the first president of the Professional Golf Association, was engaged to advise on the course layout, with the earth works probably being started in 1901. Taylor was the professional at the Royal MidSurrey Golf Club in Richmond from 1899 until his retirement in 1946. We don’t know what fee Taylor charged the Club but it is likely to have been modest. Taylor charged Hindhead Golf Club £4 10s in 1904 for similar advice (equivalent

One of them, Henry Robert Fargus, lived at Milton House in Wellesley Road (site of the current Milton Court). Behind this house lay 27 acres of grassland with a brook, trees and stables with grooms’ quarters. The land had been scheduled for development and had partly constructed roads and main drainage. They approached the landowners, the Freake Estate Company, who gave permission to play golf there until building was started. Although there were some natural hazards, with no bunkers they improvised with sheep hurdles stretched across the ‘fairways’ and made holes in the ground as there were no greens.

The stables were turned into a kitchen and bar and the grooms’ quarters had become a locker room. In the entry for the 1902-03 edition of the Golf Annual the Club is listed with 180 members (115 men and 65 ladies,) and the first Professional, Ernest Newbery, had been appointed. Entrance fees were three guineas for gentlemen and two guineas for ladies and annual subscriptions were two guineas and one guinea, respectively. Visitors could play for 1s. per day. This suggests that the Club was well established by 1902, which is corroborated by the first report in the Surrey Comet showing competition results (a men’s monthly medal) which appeared in August 1902. Such was the success of the Club, that a proposal to the Freake Estate Company that the ground be leased as a golf club was accepted and on 16 November 1902 an annual lease was agreed.

In 1910 consent was obtained from the Trustees of the Freake Estate and the District Council for the construction of a temporary wood and corrugated iron club room in front of the Clubhouse and later that year the building work was completed at a total cost of around £260. In 1911 caddies charged up to a shilling per round and the professional charged two shillings per hour for lessons. By this time the annual subscription for gentlemen had risen to three guineas. The Club enjoyed a healthy social life, with whist and bridge playing and social evenings. The men’s annual smoking concert was also a great success. The Club’s lease was renewed annually until 1927 when the Freake Estate sold the land to the Metropolitan Police. From then until March 1936, when the course was purchased jointly by

Middlesex County Council, Twickenham Borough and Teddington Urban District Council, the Club had little security of tenure and was under constant threat of eviction. During the Second World War, the Club was fortunate to have enough members to ensure its continued existence but economies were essential. The professional was asked to look for other work and his stock was sold. The stewardess was put onto a part-time basis and members helped with course maintenance to save the cost of casual labour. However, competitions continued and matches were played against Teddington Police, US forces (who were stationed in Bushy Park, Teddington), the ARP and local clubs. The use of the course was not restricted to golf and the Home Guard used it for training. The possibility of allowing sheep to graze on the course was investigated and was only abandoned due to insecure perimeter fencing!

History In 1946 the Club was affiliated to the Middlesex County Golf Union. Our 50th Anniversary was celebrated in style on 24 July 1950. As well as the triumphal entry of the Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ Captains standing in the back of an old car which was used for drawing the mowers, games of mixed three-legged races and wool ball putting competitions were enjoyed, followed by a supper and dancing in the evening. The fifties were a quiet period, but the Club saw a revival in the sixties when the first men’s invitational days were held. By 1969 the number of competitors had to be restricted to 72 due to the high demand! The decade also saw the accommodation improved for the professional and greenkeeper and two new flats and

garages secured in the adjacent Milton Court development. May 1968 was a milestone in the Club’s history when it hosted a 36-hole professional tournament.

professional visited Strawberry Hill in that year for a golf demonstration and lunch. Sanders is principally remembered for missing a threefoot putt on the 18th green to win The Open at St Andrews in 1970, and then went on to lose to Jack Nicklaus in a play-off. The wedge he presented to the Club is still on display in the Clubhouse. The new Clubhouse opened in 1983 with improvements made to the bar, kitchen and changing rooms. The cost of the project was raised almost entirely by the membership.

Six GB & Ireland Ryder Cup players participated, who between them had a total of 25 appearances. The total prize fund was a princely £550! During the competition Ken Bousfield, Coombe Hill, equalled the Professional course record of 59. The record still survives to this day and is held jointly with JE (‘Spon’) Fullicks, the Club’s professional, who retired in 1969 after loyally servicing the Club for over 50 years. In April 1971 the Title of the course was transferred from Middlesex County Council to the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, our current landlords. The Club’s 75th Anniversary was celebrated in 1975. Doug Sanders, the American golf

History A new constitution was agreed in 1998 confirming equal rights at Strawberry Hill for male and female members. An eventful first 100 years was celebrated over a week in the summer of 2000, culminating in the planting of the centenary oak tree by the Mayor between the 1st and 9th fairway. Since 2010, all members have played from the same friendly and competition tees. The par for the course, Course Rating and Slope Rating are different for men and women but there is one course for everyone. In 2023, we celebrated Peter Buchan’s 40th year as Club Professional, the longest serving in the Club’s history and only our ninth professional. Peter Buchan Club pro 1983 to date.

About The Course The course may be one of the shortest in the Home Counties but don’t be deceived, it is still a challenge. Low scoring requires accuracy and good iron play, as when you veer offline invariably problems await. Approaching the greens, the course provides a good test of short game skills.

The three consecutive holes 2/10, 3/11 and 4/12 - all par 3s for men - are some of the toughest anywhere and have been known to spoil many a scorecard. Pars, or better, on these holes are always highly prized.

For many golfers it comes into play on a number of holes, depending on choice of club and shot selection. Consequently, a ball retriever is always a useful accessory to carry in your golf bag!

The stream which crosses eight of the nine holes emanates from the Longford River in Hampton and runs mainly underground from the golf course to the River Thames near Radnor Gardens, Twickenham.

With its picturesque, parkland setting and mature tree-lined fairways there can be no better place to enjoy a relaxing round followed by a refreshing drink, particularly on a long summer evening!

This hole is the longest on the course and the most obvious danger from the tee is the railway line which borders the left-hand side of the fairway for its entire length. The stream will catch any short drives. With two bunkers on one side and trees on the other side of the gentle right curve of the fairway, it is a very testing start to the course. The 10th tee provides a slightly different angle for the tee shot. In common with all the greens on the course, there is no room behind the 1st green, that is guarded by a bunker at the front left, which catches many errant shots. Hole 2/11

There is a path to the left of the 1st green which runs behind the 4th tee and 3rd green to the 2nd/11th tees. The 2nd tee is elevated and gives an excellent view, over the stream and the small trees beside it, to the green in the distance, with a single greenside bunker on the left. This is the first of three very testing par 3’s for men, (the 3rd/12th & 4th/13th are par 4’s for women), and the green is arguably the most difficult

on the course. The 11th tee is located further along the same path and the view to the green from this tee is very different to that from the 2nd. The trees on both sides of the tee and the willow leaning out across the stream present a narrow avenue to the green. Many tee shots played cautiously to the right to avoid the tall tree to the left of the stream end up in a grass bunker to the right of the fairway. Hole 3/12

The 3th hole is probably the narrowest on the course. The exit from the tee is protected by trees on both sides, and the stream crosses the hole at half way. An accurate tee shot is required to land on the fairway beyond the stream. On the right of the fairway are tall trees and to the left a row of humps in the rough which give very unpredictable lies. Errant tee shots to the right of the tall trees land in the so called ‘paddock’ area from where it can be difficult to make a recovery shot. There is one green-side bunker on the left to add to the general difficulty of the challenge posed by this hole. The 12th plays on the same line as the 3rd hole.

Hole 4/13

The 4th hole is the longest of the par 3’s. The same accuracy is required here from the tee with the better drives favouring the left of the fairway. This relatively large green is protected on either side by grass bunkers and by rough to the rear. A very testing hole to make par. The stream is only 100 yards from the middle of the green, so care should be taken not to over club any approach shots from short of the green. The 13th hole plays along the same line as the 4th hole. Hole 5/14

The 5th hole is only slightly longer than the 4th but has more character. It is very tempting to try to drive the green but the narrow entrance presented by high trees on either side and the stream faced by a high bank on a good driving length make this a high risk and reward par 4. There is a bunker on the left of the green to further dissuade all but the bravest and most accurate longer hitters from taking this hole on. The alternative is a mid-iron up the middle of the fairway which allows a straightforward pitch to the green. The 14th is played from a similar tee. Hole 6/15

The 6th/15th hole is the shortest hole on the course over the brook and over a bunker in front of the green. This hole is a simple par 3 offering some respite from the difficulty of those preceding it. The teeing grounds vary by

a few yards and the challenge is made harder when it is played further back. The front bunker appears large and, particularly against the wind, this hole suddenly seems much longer and testing. The green is small and bordered at the back by a grass mound. It can be difficult to reach and stay on the putting surface from the longer tee position. Hole 7/16

This is the only hole without any interference from the stream. However, the 7th hole is a troublesome par 4, with an internal out of bounds along the left side of the fairway which encourages a drive to the right side. For the second shot, the entrance to the green is narrow with bunkers on either side. A sloping green which seems to defy any attempt to read the route to the hole is further protection. The 16th hole is identical to the 7th from a small teeing area. Hole 8/17

The 8th hole is another testing par 3 into the prevailing wind. The brook, absent from the previous hole, really comes into its own on the 8th as it slopes from left to right in front of the green catching any slice however well hit. A two-tier green, challenging the 2nd hole for the title of most difficult, and with bunkers on either side of the green makes this a really challenging tee shot, particularly when

Hole 8/17 the flagstick is on the upper tier of the green. The 17th is a comparatively simple and much shorter par 3 from an alternative angle which gives a very different view to the green. Hole 9/18

The 9th tee is tucked away in a little avenue of trees which provides an intimidating vista when driving. The brook is again diagonally across at an awkward distance but runs under the middle of the narrow fairway. Golfers should take care lining up their drive because the tee tends to take them to the right whereas the ideal approach to the green is from the left, away from the large trees on the other side of the fairway. There are two large bunkers immediately in front of the green and another large shallow bunker on the left-hand side. Also beware the out of bounds behind the green. The green looks relatively flat, however, it is anything but, with a number of gentle slopes making it another one difficult to read. The 18th hole is similar to the 9th and just slightly longer and more testing from the tee.

It is the perfect stepping stone to full membership. Junior Membership For golfers under 18, junior membership is a great way to learn the game, meet other young people and have fun. Members’ Golf Men’s Golf

This section encompasses a wide range of playing abilities, from beginners to single figure handicappers. Weekend competitions are open to full members and there is a busy calendar of events throughout the year. We also have annual Club matches against other local golf clubs.

We run a number of competitions at weekends where partners and 4’s are drawn in order that members get games with as many others as possible. Our whole approach at Strawberry Hill is to ensure everyone is involved and that it is always easy to find a playing partner. One aspect of golf on Sunday mornings which our full members enjoy is the half-way break for breakfast. This makes for a more leisurely and friendly game, adding to the general camaraderie and good-natured banter of time spent on the golf course!

There is active weekday section within the Club with a dedicated weekday captain, where new members are integrated and made very welcome. There are weekday competitions throughout the year as well as regular friendly roll-ups. We have an extensive list of seniors’ matches against other clubs and, in recent years, teams of our seniors have also entered county and national competitions.

Women’s Golf

Strawberry Hill boasts a very strong and active women’s section, constituting more than a third of the total membership of the Club. The women’s section is run by the Women’s Captain and her committee. We run a mentoring programme for new members to quickly get involved in all the activities at the Club. This is particularly helpful to women who are new to golf as there is always someone on hand to advise and help with obtaining a handicap and getting to know the basic rules of golf and course etiquette. for members to enjoy. In addition to the more serious competitions throughout the year, there are roll-ups and partners-drawn fun competitions to ensure that all members find it easy to get games. Competitions take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends enabling everyone to enter, however limited their free time. We enter a team each year to play in the prestigious Pearson Cup. Strawberry Hill Golf Club is a signatory of the R&A Women in Golf charter designed to make a positive change that encourages more women and girls to choose the game.

Mixed Golf

We have a number of events throughout the year for all members - adults and juniors - from the regular friendly roll-ups on Friday evenings throughout the summer (families are welcome) and the slightly eccentric night golf events, to the more serious Club competitions for all - the JH Taylor Cup and the Club Championship. There are also a number of mixed events in the summer months, and the annual knock-out mixed foursomes challenge, a hotly-contested competition where ‘sorry partner’ appears to be the most often spoken phrase!

Adult Group Coaching – ‘Get into golf’ ‘Get into golf’ is a national campaign for adult beginners, supported by England Golf, to inspire people to take up the game.

Our ‘Get into golf’ courses offer group coaching of one hour per week over four consecutive weeks. We cover the basics of golf (hold, alignment, posture, swing – pitching, chipping, putting etc.).

We work on between six and eight participants on each course. This group coaching is offered at a special rate of £12.50 per session of one hour. Payment for the four sessions (£50) is made on confirmation of booking.

Adult Academy Membership Adult Academy Membership

roll-up competitions, instruction in the rules of golf and individual coaching with our PGA Professional, Peter Buchan. Academy membership is issued in the name of an individual. It runs for a period of 12 months from the date of joining and is non-renewable.

The Academy offers a tuition-based package which allows new or novice adult golfers to learn golf and enjoy the benefits of being a golf club member. It is a perfect follow-up to ‘Get into golf’/intermediate coaching.

The package includes: • 1 x half hour introduction session, to activate. • 10 x half hour golf lessons with Peter Buchan, which can be taken individually and/or in small groups and will cover all aspects of the game.

The Academy is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the game with the aim of getting golfers to a level of oncourse competency, which will allow them to progress to full membership.

Junior Coaching The Club offers an extensive programme of group coaching for juniors run by our PGA professional Peter Buchan.

We run seven group coaching sessions of one hour each weekend during term time for three terms of ten weeks. At the end of each term, we present all the juniors with a certificate. Typically, there is a high demand for coaching places and we often have to operate a waiting list. In addition, we usually run ‘taster sessions’ during half terms. Junior Membership The Club has one of the most active junior sections in the County.

The aim of our junior section is:• To help our juniors to enjoy their golf to whatever level they may aspire. • To make their golfing experience one of fun in a friendly and safe environment, where great friendships can be made. A junior member must be under the age of 18 at the time of subscription renewal on 1st June. Our thriving junior section has two categories, under 14 and 14-18 years old. We have a Junior Captain and a junior committee and they meet regularly to plan the events. We organise a full programme of competitions for juniors including monthly medals, and Stablefords and knockout competitions and we hold lots of fun team competitions in the holidays. We also hold a number of family events (Family Foursomes and Junior Family Competition and barbeque). We play friendly junior matches against the other sections of the Club and also take part in events arranged by the County golf organisations.
