Originally established in 1911 and redesigned by the renowned golf course architect James Braid, our club offers a unique blend of tradition, challenge, and community. Set within an undulating parkland and heathland landscape, the course provides an enjoyable yet rewarding test for golfers of all abilities.
The 18-hole layout is both strategic and memorable, combining natural beauty with classic design principles. Measuring 6,042 yards from the white tees and 5,479 yards from the red tees, the course is a par 69 for men and par 72 for ladies.
Beyond the fairways, St Austell Golf Club is home to thriving men’s, ladies’, mixed, seniors’, and junior sections, all contributing to the friendly and inclusive atmosphere that defines the club.

OUR HISTORY
StAustell Golf Club traces its origins back to 1911, when a small group of passionate golfing enthusiasts, led by Mr J. Baragwanath King and Mr F.L. Clunes, laid out a handful of holes at Rocky Park on the western edge of St Austell.
As interest in the game continued to grow, the club’s expanding membership sought a more permanent home. In 1913, discussions with the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe led to the leasing of land at Tregongeeves and Mulvra Farms for the development of a full 18-hole course.
By the middle of that year, 14 holes were already in play, and following the release of further land in 1914, a complete 18-hole course measuring approximately 4,300 yards was established.
Set against the dramatic landscape surrounding Taylors Shaft and the historic engine house of the Great Polgooth Tin Mine, the course occupied naturally undulating terrain that would shape its distinctive character for generations to come.
The aftermath of the First World War brought challenges, and progress slowed as the club faced uncertainty over its future direction. However, a pivotal meeting in July 1925 marked a new era for St Austell Golf Club.
At this meeting, members embraced ambitious proposals that would redefine the club — including the introduction of a bar, Sunday opening, and most significantly, the pursuit of ownership through the purchase of the freehold from the Mount Edgcumbe Estate.
Later that year, the club sought the expertise of five-time Open Champion and celebrated golf course architect James Braid.
Braid designed several new holes across rough mining land to the south of the existing course — now recognised as holes 13 through 16 — while also recommending strategic improvements across the wider layout. His design philosophy carefully considered the natural contours of the land, its features, and even the prevailing winds.
It was not until 1936, during the club’s Silver Jubilee year, that Braid’s vision was fully realised. The reconstructed and lengthened course was officially opened on 25 September 1937 by President Colonel Cobbold-Sawle, with the ceremonial first drive played by Captain Mr H.I. Saunders.
Today, St Austell Golf Club remains proud of its heritage — a course shaped by history, strengthened by community, and enriched by the legacy of James Braid.
By 1960, St Austell Golf Club remained a modest but determined club, with just 113 members, no resident professional, and limited weekday catering. In those years, Steward Reg Pryor played a vital role in club life, managing the professional’s shop while also serving as part-time greenkeeper.
The decades that followed brought important growth and transformation.
OUR HISTORY
In 1974, Mr A. Roberts offered the club an additional 16.5 acres of land adjoining the 16th and 18th fairways. This generous opportunity enabled a significant redevelopment project, completed in 1982, which saw the creation of five new holes — now holes 8 through 12.
This ambitious expansion involved the construction of four new greens and five new tee complexes, increasing the overall course length from 5,600 yards to just over 6,000 yards and enhancing both the challenge and quality of the layout.
The early 1990s marked another major step forward with the installation of an automatic irrigation system across all greens and tees — a substantial investment in course conditioning and year-round playability.
Over many years, the dedicated greens team has continued to work tirelessly to enhance the quality of the playing surfaces, ensuring the course remains enjoyable, competitive, and true to its heritage.
A defining moment in the club’s modern history came in 2011, during its Centenary Year, when St Austell Golf Club hosted the Cornwall Golf Union’s Cornwall Amateur Championship for the very first time.

THE PRO TEAM
Tony Pitts – Head PGA Professional
Tony Pitts has been the resident fully qualified PGA Professional at St Austell Golf Club for over 27 years, providing exceptional service to both members and visitors alike.
Tony began his golfing journey as a junior at Peacehaven Golf Club and Seaford Golf Club in Sussex. At the age of 16, he became Assistant Professional to Nigel Blenkarne at Salisbury & South Wilts Golf Club.
Following qualification, Tony spent six years in teaching roles at golf clubs across Germany, London, and Australia before returning to England. He later held Professional positions at St Enodoc Golf Club and St Kew Golf Club in Cornwall before joining St Austell.
As a professional golfer, Tony has achieved numerous victories within the West Region and has served as both Captain of the West Region PGA and Captain of the Cornwall Alliance.
Tony’s expertise extends beyond competition into coaching and retail.
He remains committed to modern teaching practices, regularly attending professional development seminars, including those led by world-renowned coach Butch Harmon.
Tuition is available for golfers of all levels, with both individual and group coaching sessions offered.
The Pro Shop provides a comprehensive range of golf equipment and apparel from leading manufacturers, supported by expert advice, club fitting services, and trolley servicing for brands such as Powakaddy and Motocaddy.
Ben Pill –
PGA Professional & Golf Coach
Ben Pill is a PGA Professional and Golf
Coach with strong ties to St Austell Golf Club, where he spent his junior years developing his game.
During his time at the club, Ben represented St Austell at both junior and men’s level, later becoming Junior Captain. He also had the honour of representing Cornwall at Under-16 and Under-18 level.
In 2016, Ben joined Truro Golf Club, working under Scott Richards while completing his PGA training. Throughout his career, Ben has developed a passion for helping golfers improve their game, combining technical knowledge with an approachable coaching style.
As part of the St Austell Pro Team, Ben is dedicated to supporting players of all abilities and helping them achieve their golfing goals.

THE CLUBHOUSE
The clubhouse at St Austell Golf Club provides a warm and welcoming environment for members, visitors, and guests to relax and enjoy their time at the club.
Recently refurbished, the clubhouse combines comfort and style, offering an ideal setting to unwind after a round of golf or to enjoy social occasions throughout the year.
Overlooking the 9th and 18th greens of our historic James Braid-designed course,
it provides one of the finest vantage points in the club.
THE BAR
Our spacious, modern bar offers a wide selection of beers, wines, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages. Members benefit from a 10% discount on both food and drink purchases, making it the perfect place to relax before or after golf.
With views across the course and a comfortable, contemporary setting, the bar is the social heart of the club.
DINING & FUNCTIONS
ADJACENT TO THE MAIN bar is our restaurant and function space, offering seating for up to 60 guests indoors, with additional marquee capacity for up to 110 guests. This versatile space allows us to host a wide range of events including:
