Founded in 1892 South Staffordshire Golf Club or South Staffs,
ORIGINALLY LOCATED IN PENN, IN 1908 THE CLUB MOVED TO OUR CURRENT HOME IN TETTENHALL WHERE HARRY VARDON - SIX TIME WINNER OF THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP - DESIGNED THE ORIGINAL LAYOUT.
Though, in subsequent years, the course has been updated by such luminaries as Harry Colt, James Braid and more recently Donald Steele, Vardon’s original design
remains. Recognised as a challenge requiring both skill and imagination, over the last one hundred years the golf course has witnessed the play of many top professionals including, in the early days Harry ardon and George Duncan,Ted Ray and Sandy Herd.
In the aftermath of World War Two Peter Alliss and Dai Rees played a series of Charity Exhibition Matches before in 1971 the Club hosted the inaugural Double Diamond Home International Tournament. Played between teams from England,
Ireland, Scotland and Wales it featured the likes of Tommy Horton, Christy O’Connor, Bernhard Gallagher and Brian Huggett.
THE CARLSBERG EUROPEAN WOMENS’ CHAMPIONSHIP AND A SKINS CHALLENGE BETWEEN RYDER CUP STARS PETER BAKER, PAUL BROADHURST, DAVID GILFORD AND IAN WOOSNAM ADD TO THE LIST OF NOTABLE PROFESSIONAL EVENTS.
South Staffs has hosted amateur golf at the highest level including many County
events as well as the EGU Champion Club Tournament in 1992, the Senior British Ladies’ Open in both 2003 and 2017, the England v Scotland Boys International in 2008 and the Midland Open Amateur in 2010.
In 1992 the Club celebrated its Centenary and in 2008 the club marked 100 years of golf on its course at Danescourt by launching its Men’s Open Tournament, The Vardon Bowl.

Located in gently rolling countryside with fine views to the north, the 6561 yard par 72 course is noted for its tree lined fairways and fast true greens. Most of the holes remain as they were when the golf course was first laid out in 1908, but a programme of gentle improvement has ensured that it remains an outstanding course. PAR 5, YARDS 530, STROKE INDEX 11
Peter Baker’s
Course Guide
The green is reachable in two, but two long and accurate shots are needed to be on the green. The prevailing wind will take the ball left to right but if it’s behind you and there’s some run on the fairway – go for it. With the Out of Bounds on the right, the ideal tee shot is to the left side of the fairway with a little bit of fade to set up for a good second shot into the green. It’s important not to go short because it’s a long narrow green 34 yards deep.

PAR 3, YARDS 164, STROKE INDEX 15
Your approach to this hole depends on the pin placement, unless the flag is behind the left-hand bunker, attack the pin. If you’re off the green it can be a tough chip back from either side. The green slopes to the front so aim to keep below the hole.

PAR 4, YARDS 362, STROKE INDEX 5
Do you take on the fairway bunker and bring the Out of Bounds into play? An ideal drive aims for the bunker with a slight draw to bring it left. This gives the bonus of a short iron into a difficult green. Laying up short of the bunker gives you a straight shot into the green with a longer iron. This is a really difficult green – the two bunkers will punish a shot that goes left and the slope on the green means that you should aim to putt from below the pin.

PAR 4, YARDS 356, STROKE INDEX 13
If downwind, the big hitters have a real chance of hitting the green with their drive but the bunkers on this hole make it a risky option unless you’re on top of your game. The safe and sensible route to the green is to lay up short of the first bunker and then take a pitching wedge into the green.

PAR 5, YARDS 479, STROKE INDEX 1
A short par 5 with a real birdie opportunity but your drive needs to be down the right to have any chance of a second shot to the green. Your second shot is slightly uphill to a raised green and its worth taking an extra club to make sure you get up the slope.

PAR 3, YARDS 141, STROKE INDEX 17
Don’t be too aggressive on this hole. It’s a small tight green and if you’re long you will struggle to get up and down. Take a short iron and swing free and straight. The percentage shot is to stay right even if the flag is on the left of the green.
HOLE SEVEN
PAR 4, YARDS 424, STROKE INDEX 7
Your drive should be over the marker post or slightly right. Too far left and you’re blocked out by the trees. It will need a good second shot into a narrow green but there is no danger in front of the green. Watch out for the slight ridge that runs front to back, it will make your putt move off line. The bunker on the right is one of the deepest on the course and difficult to get up and down.

PAR 4, YARDS 399, STROKE INDEX 9
This is probably the narrowest green on the course guarded by some difficult bunkers. Its decision time – do you take the fairway traps on and have a short club into the green or lay back and have a longer second shot and risk missing the green.

PAR 4, YARDS 459, STROKE INDEX 3
A very tough hole requiring two long straight shots. The fairway slopes left to right. Keep to the left of centre otherwise the ball may run off into the rough and the trees. The hole plays longer than it looks and the front of the hole is well guarded by the three bunkers and dead ground on the right. On this hole 4 is a good score.

PAR 4, YARDS 421, STROKE INDEX 8
If your drive is too straight or too long then you’re going to be out of bounds. Take a 3 wood off the tee if the wind is behind you. The line here is the right edge of the trees on the left. For your second shot, avoid the left-hand bunker – it can be deadly. The green itself runs left to right.

If the pin is at the back of the green don’t get too greedy – go for the centre. If you miss the green it’s a tough up and down from anywhere but especially from the back with not much room to stop the ball.

A left to right tee shot is needed if you’re not going to run through the trees. The second shot is blind towards the marker post behind the green. Aim to land short of the green, the fairway runs away and down. Don’t go long.

PAR 4, YARDS 409, STROKE INDEX 10
A tight drive over the marker post – you can possibly take a 3 wood if you’re driving downwind. With your second shot, don’t be short – the slope runs back. On the other hand, if there is some run on the ball it may bounce through and there is out of bounds at the back of the green. Try to keep it on the green.

This is a strong hole and the marker post gives a good line for a tight straight drive. For your second shot everything is left to right so if you miss on the left or land in the left bunkers everything is running away from you.

An inviting shot downhill to the green but be careful. Out of Bounds is only 6 yards off the green and the prevailing wind is left to right.

A reachable Par 5. Your drive should be a slight left to right fade to keep you away from the bunkers and to open up the second shot to the green.

A tough short Par 4. A straight tee shot is required towards the right side of the fairway to open up the green. For longer hitters perhaps even take a 3 iron off the tee. Aim for the right side of the green below the flag.

From the back tee this can appear a very tight hole. A straight drive is at a premium with Out of Bounds on the right though for much of the time a prevailing right to left wind will be in your favour. The second shot is into a well bunkered green with Out of Bounds both to the right and behind the green. Stay short of the hole – the green slopes away from the clubhouse.

• From 1997 until 2020 he was Head Professional at Patshull Park Golf and Country Club, gaining a great reputation in retail, golf management and coaching.
• He is a past captain of Shropshire and Herefordshire PGA and has sat on the PGA Midland Region Committee.

One of the highlights of the Danescourt Bistro is our popular à la carte dining nights, where guests can enjoy thoughtfully designed menus that change regularly and reflect classic favourites alongside modern dishes. We also host pop-up restaurant nights, which bring something a little different to the table. These themed evenings allow our chefs to be creative, offering exciting menus inspired by cuisines from around the world or special dining concepts.
