History

Prior to the opening of Low Laithes Golf Club in 1925, the land and buildings on the site passed through several hands, being used for general farming and agricultural purposes until December 1924.

It was at this time that Mr. James Walter Watson purchased it from Mr. G.L.T. Brudenell, a local mill owner and owner of most of the land in the Flushdyke and Alverthorpe areas.

It is suggested that Mr. Watson had surveyed the area for some time, with the idea of using the land and buildings for the construction of a golf course and a clubhouse. The plans were drawn up and execution of the work was entrusted to the British

Golf Course Construction Company under the supervision of Dr. Alister MacKenzie as Chief Advisor.

By May 1925 nine holes were ready for play and this led to the founding of Low Laithes Golf Club. Jesse Archer took on the role of Founder President, with Julian Thornton as Founder Captain and Arthur Stone as the club’s Professional.

The full, 18-hole course was played for the first time in September 1926 and, by this time, the club had already established a number of major trophies including the Archer Cup, Jessop Cup, Rose Bowl, Kaye Cup and the Low Laithes Cup.

Brochure SponSor

Following the opening of the club, Mr. Watson converted part of Flanshaw Hall into living quarters for Arthur Stone, the club’s professional, with there being no suitable accommodation at Low Laithes at that time.

By the 1930s times were tough for Low Laithes. According to the secretary at that time, John Haller, the running of the club depended largely on the generosity of some of its members, both in their work and cash injection. With funding tight, the minute book for this period includes an instruction that, “no more than three lights be turned on in the building at any one time.”

This tough period for the club continued into the 1940s, as it lost many of its members and staff to the efforts of World War II. During this time the Ministry of Agriculture insisted on sheep being allowed to graze on the course, causing some obvious problems for John Haller, who remained throughout the war to keep the club alive.

Once the hostilities were over, the club’s fortunes began to turn around. Despite not paying any rent throughout the five years of the war, the owner replied “forget the arrears, just start paying the rent,” in one of many acts of generosity towards the club at this time.

Brochure SponSor

Members were always ready to contribute towards improvements and in one of many forward steps, it was at this time the club purchased their first Overgreen Cutter. Low Laithes continued to flourish and in 1963 were in a stable enough position to purchase the whole of the land and buildings for a fee of £6,500.

This saw further developments to the land and buildings throughout the 60s, with improvements during this time to the Ladies facilities, the car park, inside and outside of the clubhouse and drainage work on the course.

These developments have continued until this day and despite numerous disasters at the club since its inception, thanks to its tireless staff and passionate members, Low Laithes has survived and is as strong as ever.

Today, the club is a fine example of how to run a golf club successfully and, while many things have changed since our inception, our dedication to offering the best course in the region is still as strong today as it was in those pioneering days at the beginning of the 20th century.

About the Course

Low Laithes is an 18-hole, Par 72 parkland course which was designed by the legendary golf course architect Dr Alister MacKenzie, famous for designing world renowned courses including Augusta National, Cypress Point & Royal Melbourne. Golf was first played on the course in 1925 and it has developed over the years into a challenging test for golfers of all abilities.

The course is undulating without being hilly and has a variety of outstanding features which make every hole different.

The par 3 holes, though not excessively long, are demanding as is the final par 5 hole, a test for the most accomplished golfer.

Our course is characterized by tree-lined fairways, strategic bunkers, challenging greens, and natural obstacles, offering a scenic and demanding experience for golfers of all abilities.

Course Tour

If you have never played at Low Laithes Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour.

Hole 1 - Par 4 - 343 Yards We all pray for a good first tee shot on any course and the church tower is the perfect line off this elevated tee to set this up. A wide fairway awaits but watch out for the boundary which is present on the left side of the first eight holes. The opening tee shot, which should only leave a short iron to a relatively flat green, is a pleasant start.

Hole 2 - Par 4 - 398 Yards Here a drive left of centre gives a better approach to the green, which is defended by bunkers to the right but, beware of the out-of-bounds on the left. The cross ditch and ponds on the right are always a problem for a weak approach or a long drive.

Hole 3 - Par 4 - 389 Yards A straight tee shot at this hole will set you up for a good approach to the green, defended by a bunker some 25 yards (23 metres) short of the green. This is one of the few flat greens that you will encounter here. The long hitter should be aware of the cross ditch and it may be sensible not to use a driver from the tee.

Brochure SponSor

Hole 4 - Par 3 - 163 Yards The first par 3 sees you having to play over the water hazard for the perfect line to the green. For those who keep too far right there are three bunkers blocking your way to the green.

Hole 5 - Par 4 - 303 Yards The choice is yours: play down the middle of this short par 4 or try to fly over the trees on the right to reach the green in one. Whatever you decide the difficult part of this hole is the first two-tier MacKenzie green. Many a player has had to concentrate on their fourth putt.

Hole 6 - Par 4 - 344 Yards Keep your tee shot to the high left side of this fairway and you will have an easier approach to the green. For those who stray to the right, an uphill approach to a long elevated green provides a sterner test.

Hole 7 - Par 4 - 428 Yards The longest par 4 on the course provides a test of power and accuracy, often into the prevailing wind! Even after a big drive up the left hand side, a long second is required to get home in two. If that is not enough there are also three greenside bunkers waiting to catch anything drifting to the right side of the green.

Brochure SponSor

Course Tour

Hole 8 - Par 3 - 154 Yards Although this is the shortest of the par 3s it often plays longer than the other two when into the prevailing wind. Make sure you carry the front bunker defending this long narrow green.

Hole 9 - Par 4 - 402 Yards The long and brave may go for the gap in the hedge in an effort to get close to this green from the tee. The less adventurous can play short of the road down this fastrunning fairway. Good judgement is required to get the correct length to this large green with no surrounding bunkers.

Hole 10 - Par 4 - 284 Yards Although this is the shortest par 4 on the course, and very short compared to today’s modern designs, this hole is fraught with danger. The uphill tee shot needs to be kept well left for the best view of the green and away from the clubhouse boundary to the right. A short tee shot will result in a blind approach, over the out of bounds and high trees, to this green. Long hitters may choose to cut the corner from the tee and hope to reach the green, but whichever way you go a treacherous green awaits.

Brochure SponSor

Course Tour

Hole 11 - Par 4 - 284 Yards Classic MacKenzie – wide open fairway, although inclined, leading to a two-tier sloping green, which is well protected by two deep bunkers. To make things even more interesting, only a small part of the upper green level, and nothing of the lower level, is visible from the fairway.

Hole 12 - Par 3 - 176 Yards Only the very confident player will try to land their tee shot on this green. The wise one will use the contours to run the ball in from the right hand side. Shots long and or left are to be avoided during the play of this scenic hole.

Hole 13 - Par 5 - 558 Yards The longest hole on the course is the start of what must rank as one of the best “last six” in the county. Distant views of Wakefield Cathedral, City Hall and St John’s Church form a backdrop to this far away green. Keep your tee shot to the right hand side of the fairway and most should be able to be home in three on this bunker-less hole.

Hole 14 - Par 4 - 393 Yards Now safely in the middle of the course not even the most wayward of drives could reach the almost ever-present boundary. Full throttle here then a choice between a lofted iron or a punched shot will get you home.

Brochure SponSor

Hole 15 - Par 4 - 390 Yards The first of two consecutive tough par 4s. Trees frame the hole from the tee but there is ample fairway to hit. Anything leaking right will spell trouble. Stay left off the tee for the best line into this long, narrow green which falls away to all four sides.

Hole 16 - Par 4 - 415 Yards Tree lined from tee to green, a right to left shape from the tee will help to hold the sloping fairway. Still much to do into the prevailing wind after a good tee shot as the small, undulating green is protected by ditches to the left and right.

Hole 17 - Par 5 - 471 Yards The final two par 5s couldn’t be more different. On the penultimate hole, once you’ve carried the pond and ditch from the tee and avoided the boundary on the right, reaching the green in two is within reach. Eagles and birdies are common here—but so too is the potential for a costly mistake.

Hole 18 - Par 5 - 544 Yards The gentle welcome of the opening hole feels a distant memory as you stand on the final tee. This closing hole is a true test—long, uphill, and unrelenting, with ditches and bunkers lying in wait for any stray shot. And just when you think the battle is won, the green reveals itself: a magnificent MacKenzie two-tier masterpiece, fiercely guarded by deep bunkers on either side. It’s a grand, uncompromising finale.
