EVERYBODY IS WELCOME AT GRIM’S DYKE GOLF CLUB!
IN 1909, A GROUP OF LOCAL RESIDENTS MET AT A HOUSE IN THE AVENUE, HATCH END, PINNER, MIDDLESEX.
The meeting, chaired by William Moore, resolved to form a golf club for the benefit of local residents. It was felt the land they could acquire was well suited for golf because of its rolling nature and quality of turf which had lain undisturbed for generations. The club took its name from the English Heritage site, the Grim’s Dyke, of Anglo Saxon origin.
The grand opening of the new 9 hole course took place on 18th June 1910 by Sir William S Gilbert, of Gilbert and Sullivan fame. Sir William’s country house and estate occupied
land adjacent to the new course (now Grim’s Dyke hotel) and he became our first President.
In February 1921, plans were drawn up for extending the course to 18 holes, designed by 5 times Open Champion, James Braid, one of the era’s greatest and most prolific designers.
The present club house was built in 1936, and opened by the Marchioness of Carisbrooke. The club house has been modernised and extended since then, but retains the attractive features of a 1930’s building. In 2012,
a superb new men’s changing room and shower facilities was built and opened by the Mayor of Harrow.
In 1958, two former Captains, Dr. Mungo Park and his Brother, Dr Jack Park, presented the clubs used by their grand-father, Willie Park, 4 times Open Champion between 1860 and 1875.
Replicas of these clubs are displayed in the clubhouse bar! Willie’s brother, Mungo Park, won the Open Championship in 1874 and his
medal from that occasion was also presented to the club.
We are proud of our long and rich history, and look forward to continuing to offer challenging golf to members and visitors alike.

A tricky par 3 to open the round, the green is surrounded by 4 bunkers and two large oaks. The key to the tee shot is to hit it long enough and high enough to clear the bunkers and straight enough to miss the trees. The green may look flat at first glance, but take a second look as there are some deceptive lines. A par 3 is always a great start here.

This par 4 is a great shaped hole. Aim your drive on the left side to leave the best line to the green. Any wayward shots may be captured by the ditch on the right. The green is quick and slopes back to front, so try to leave an uphill putt.

A short but challenging par 3 with a blind tee shot so the marker post is your line. The green slopes from right to left and back to front. Missing the green can leave a real test of your short game to make par.
HOLE 4
This is a lovely par 4 and is one of the ‘signature’ holes of our course. You tee-off from the highest point on the course with panoramic views all around. Placement of your drive is all important here, so keep your drive to the right half of fairway. The second shot looks inviting and is all downhill so be careful with club selection as it’s easy to hit through the green.
HOLE 5
A good drive is needed to carry the two fairway bunkers and avoid the out of bounds on the right. The fairway is generous, but missing left or right can leave you with a challenging second. A short second shot to a sloping green from front to back. It is best to be below the pin.

Our shortest hole on the course but the wind can affect your tee shot so middle of the green is never a bad result. The green is very tricky and has a steep slope from left to right.
This is a tough par 4 and a challenge for players of all levels. Your tee shot should favour the left side because the fairway slopes from left to right. Trees and the pond punish wayward shots. The green is on top of a steep slope and is well protected by bunkers so take care with your approach shot. The green is large but has two levels so getting onto the right level makes your putt a little easier.
This hole offers good risk and reward. There is out of bounds all the way up the right side. Drive on the left side of fairway for the best approach to the green and an excellent chance of making par. The green can be reachable in two for big hitters by taking ‘the Tiger line’, so a great birdie chance here.

The tee shot offers you the opportunity to hit your ball into the next county, as the Hertfordshire/Middlesex boundary line cuts across the fairway. This par 5 is reachable in two with a long straight drive but beware the copse of trees on the left which catches many a wayward tee-shot. The green is large but don’t underestimate the slope!
HOLE 10
An interesting par 3 to start the back nine. The tee shot is slightly uphill so an extra club is needed. It’s easy to be short. Two bunkers guard the green.
HOLE 11
This tee offers fabulous views over Northwood, Rickmansworth and even to Windsor castle on a very clear day! A tricky hole where a par 4 is always a good result. The ideal tee shot is parallel to the fairway bunker. Achieving this gives you full-visibility for your second shot to the green. If you are short off the tee you will have a ‘blind’ second shot and there is every chance you will end up in one of the many fairway bunkers. The green slopes from front to back. You are strongly advised to be below the flag for your first putt!

HOLE 12
This is stroke index one. The hole is a good length and requires you to cross the ditch three times to reach the green. Aim for the left half of the fairway to avoid the trees. High handicappers need to navigate their way to the green. There are two ditches to clear with the second shot if playing for the green, so club selection important.
FOUR IS ALWAYS A GREAT SCORE HERE.
A narrow tee shot here challenges your mental game. There are large oaks on left and right of fairway so a straight drive is needed to leave an uphill second shot. A good birdie opportunity is your reward for making the green in two.

Newly designed downhill par 3. A small target surrounded by two large bunkers to the right of the green and large trees guarding the left hand side of the hole, a well struck shot is required to reach the green despite playing downhill, club selection is vital.

A long and challenging uphill par 3. A fairway wood or even driver is needed to reach the green. Staying below the hole is a must here, since the slope is severe from right to left. Miss the green right and you may be struggling to make par.
HOLE 16
The flagstick is visible in the distance from the tee, but this hole often plays longer than expected. A straight tee shot is needed here to avoid the fairway bunkers and ditches left and right at the bottom of the hill. Your second shot is uphill. The green is guarded by large bunkers left and right. The green is the flattest on the course so offers a good chance for those making it in two.

A fairway wood or iron off the tee is a must here. The left side of the fairway will give you an easier shot to a raised green. A copse on the left, trees on the right, out of bounds,

As you stand on the tee, you look towards the clubhouse. Aim to drive to the right side of fairway as it slopes from right to left. A good drive will leave a short pitch to the raised green.
There is plenty of protection for wayward shots and there are some tricky pin placements, but there is still the chance of a birdie and to finish your round in style.

VALUE FOR MONEY
Saturday and Sunday are peak playing times at all golf clubs. Playing once a weekend at Grim’s Dyke works out at about £26 per round – not bad for peak time golf!
Playing a few summer evenings and a few more weekends easily brings the cost down to under £20 a round.
One of the luxuries of being a Grim’s Dyke member is that you can play when (and if) you like, even if it’s only a few holes, and not worry about the cost.

Built in 1936, the present club house has been much extended and refurbished. Yet, it retains the charm and old world attractiveness of a 1930’s building.
